Toy lost both his younger brothers within a month of each other to car accidents. He was also a United States Marine Corps Vietnam War combat vet (WIA). That's him singing with incredible soul and thumbpicking that beautiful Gibson Les Paul. Thank you for everything brother. Rest easy.
Great song and life performance! If you get a chance, check out Toy Caldwell’s (lead singer of this song) history. He was awarded the Purple Heart for his service in Vietnam. He had a lot of tragedy in his life.
Toy Caldwell, Vietnam combat vet wounded in action but stayed to keep fighting to help his fellow Marines. War hero comes home and creates one of the most iconic southern rock songs in history. R.i.P. Toy
The vocal delivery you're talking about is called "Phrasing" and some singers are definitely better than others. It's one of the aspects that makes singers like Freddie Mercury legendary.
Classic southern rock and soulful! Why your heads aren’t jiving to this? Maybe you’re not feeling it? Awesome Marshall Tucker! And it’s live!!! With real musicians!!!
My favorite "country rock" band. They started out playing at clubs in and around Spartanburg, South Carolina. Try "Can't You See," "Heard It In a Love Song," "Fire on the Mountain," "Take the Highway," and "24 Hours at a Time." Great music!
This song means so much to me. I just left a 7 year relationship. It tore me up. The grandfather who showed me this song just passed. Im on a week off from work back in AA and i dont mean to make it a sob story. But it reminds me of my gramps pulling me out of a bar and relating to me about shit.
Great American southern band. Saw them the First time with Bob Seger,Bob. Dylan, Greatfull Dead and Neil Young. In 74. Out doors in Ann Arbor. Michigan. 🤠🇺🇸🇨🇦✌️
Legend has it that Toy wrote that song while serving in Vietnam. He watched the affect that Dear John letters had on his buddies and wrote this song about it.
Seen them live. While at the concert I witnessed a man in a wheel chair rag doll a fully capable man to the ground for standing in his way 🤣 better yet the "fully capable" man is now my brother in law. That's Life
So glad you two have started looking into this genre. There are soooo many great ones. Try Allman Brothers Band, "Whipping Post." Also, Humble Pie, "Black Coffee."
One of the three best southern rock bands ever! I’ve lived in South Carolina my whole life, my teenage yrs in the 70’s. Marshall Tucker was a mainstay at concerts. They never let us down!! Oh, the other two bands, The Allman Brothers and Lynyrd Skynyrd.
Tragic life led by the Caldwell brothers. The lead singer, Toy Caldwell was the older brother of co-founder and bass guitarist Tommy Caldwell, who was killed at age 30 in an automobile accident on April 28, 1980, and to Tim Caldwell, who on March 28, 1980, one month prior to Tommy's death, was killed at age 25 after a collision with a garbage truck. Toy Caldwell was found dead in bed by his wife, Abbie, on February 25, 1993, at his home in Moore, South Carolina. The cause of death was reported as cardio-respiratory failure due to viral myocarditis, by the Spartanburg County Coroner. However, a toxicologist's report found that the cause of Toy’s death was a cardiac arrest brought on by cocaine use. RIP brothers 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
This performance was recorded at the Grand Opera House in my hometown of Macon, Ga. So much good music has come out of Macon, including Little Richard, The Allman Brothers, Otis Redding, and many many others.
Toy Caldwell, lead singer, was a US Marine in the Vietnam War. He was wounded twice and received a Purple Heart. He literally went from fighting for his life in the Vietnam War to singing that song in the video .. RIP Hero
One of my top 5 favorite songs. Already on the list to be played at my funeral.Good road trip song or drinking song. And we're still trying to find out just what that woman did to him. He sings from deep in his heart like this is something that really happened to him. I love this song!
Love to get back to Canada. My family went to Nagra falls years ago.Absolute beautiful. Sorry can't resist. Rush is my favorite band since I was 9 years old. The 1st rock music I picked up on. I was still listening to the Muppet movie soundtrack the same time I heard moving pictures changed my life.
This is gold. There’s other performances of this on UA-cam.. but this is the best performance… I’d love to find a remastered version.. I remember back in the day when this was always on the radio …
Toy (the lead guitarist and vocalist) was sooooo good. So soulful. And a MONSTER naturally gifted guitarist. Dare I say a bit forgotten and underrated. But not by Tucker fans. The man could flat out play and was the star of the band. But the entire band were great and not to be denied. Toy always gave and gives me inspiration as a guitarist. I cant play guitar with a pick to save my life. So when I found out he didnt play with a pick either yet played so great it inspired me to continue and just be me on the guitar also. Long Live MTB!
Nice job y'all, for a totally satisfying eargasm need to cheak out Otis Taylor- Hey Joe, love Jimi Hendrix but this is best version ever, live at Philadelphia folk festival Aug. 16 2013 Anne Harris on the violin is beyond comprehension
Toy Caldwell one of the greatest singing and playing like he meant it! another South Carolina boy closer to your age you guys might like is Marcus King. if you wanna see young talent check out the Marcus King Band "Side Door" jam in the van. that young dude is like the second coming! Cheers
red you gonna love this This song is the only song that has 1billion streams on Spotify . It’s so good you won’t regret too best rapper for this gen It’s something new and give it a good it’s amazing reckless
Southern rock is based on the mixture of blues, rock and gospel. The secret to blues and gospel is you REALLY mean what you are singing about. Southern rock uses that, too. Like the Allman Brothers Band and Lynyrd Skynyrd.
I think you can add Jazz, Country, Western, and Bluegrass into the mix as well. Not all at once on a single song, of course, but those genres are certainly involved in “Southern Rock”.
Bad ass song off the jump. Before my time, but my parents listened to this. Childhood vibes for me. But, great song. I will play this at 11 with the windows down or in a drop top.
This is a legendary band, so much great music! I don't know if you've delved into the Allman Brothers Band yet, but they also kill the southern rock sound. Whipping Post is a fantastic song, as is Midnight Rider and Ramblin' Man. The Outlaws are another group worthy of reactions.
Listen to the recorded studio long version it will definitely get even deeper into your soul which is rare that a recorded version will do this over a live version.
This is cool. I’ve heard this song but never knew there was a live version. Usually I don’t like live versions, but this is close to the album version. It’s a good recording, too.
The Marshall Tucker Band has a bunch of great songs. Another song that might make a great reaction would be The Gourds cover of Gin and Juice. Even though it's a cover it's still very unique.

Toy did 2 tours in Vietnam and got 2 Purple Hearts. After he got the 1st one he went right back in and did another tour. RIP Toy Caldwell.
Marshall Tucker band from South Carolina, true southern rock . I Saw them perform many times back in the 70s, unforgettable experience 🔥❤️👍👍
I’ve always thought the line about taking a train all the way to Georgia (from SC) was kind of funny.
Me too. I miss them still. Take The Highway. 🤘🏼
@@a.n.7863 Ikr👍😂
I saw them in 1979, they were incredible!! And the ladies at the concert, off the charts!!
South Carolina girl here who grew up on Southern rock.
Absolute gold standard of southern rock n roll
Toy, will always be at the top of southern rock.
We miss you Toy
Love Marshall Tucker Band!!!!
"Fire on the Mountain" and " Heard it in a Love Song" are 2 great tunes by Marshall Tucker
Can’t forget “losing you” too..
He is feeling it.
I loved this group in 1973 as an eleventh grader & still love it as a senior citizen in 2023. The music is ageless.
Great song and life performance! If you get a chance, check out Toy Caldwell’s (lead singer of this song) history. He was awarded the Purple Heart for his service in Vietnam. He had a lot of tragedy in his life.

Alot of soul in that voice.. Soul requires experience.

Definitely.
I live just south of Macon.
We all have Phil Walden to thank for the great music.
Yep that's true passion in those vocals. Top tier band and tune for sure.
Badass tune...tune, filled with emotion and soul
Toy Caldwell, lead singer, was a US Marine in the Vietnam War. He was wounded twice and received a Purple Heart. He literally went from fighting for his life in the Vietnam War to singing that song in the video .. RIP Hero

One of my all time favorite Bands, been listening to them my whole life, they are right up there with the Stones.

This is one of my biographical songs that I can more than relate to. It's impossible to not feel the pure emotion in Toy Caldwell's voice.

Great song!! Marshall Tucker Band....just one of the MANY GREATS from 60's & 70's!! ❤❤
Sometimes you have to rue the quality of the records we retain.
Then, you gotta be thankful for what's left.

Searchin for a Rainbow is a great one by them.
Love.. "Heard It In A Love Song" is another great song of theirs.
This band is made up of a group of good ole South Carolina boys!!!❤️🤗
"Virginia", is the best southern rock love ballad you will ever hear. Give that one a shot. Doug Gray's vocals are exemplified!

Its called singing from the soul
The lead singer Toy Caldwell was a Purple Heart recipient from the Vietnam war!
This is cool. I’ve heard this song but never knew there was a live version. Usually I don’t like live versions, but this is close to the album version. It’s a good recording, too.
