Marshall Tucker is criminally underrated. They are definitely right up there with The Allman Brothers, Lynard Skynard, and CCR for being one of the best that Southern Rock had to offer.
100% right! WE wore them out in the late 70s/80s ----- With our cheap Beer beer, bandanas, and rowdy softball game attempts...beer runs and vibin' to the tunes always seemed to distract us Lol
Toy Caldwell, lead singer and lead guitar, was only in his mid twenties when this became a hit. He was a two tour Marine Corps vet of the Vietnam conflict. Two Purple Hearts. Looked like a baby face but had that voice built in the jungles. He suffered from war related mental health issues and died pretty young of drug and alcoholism addictions. Watch this live. You’ll see the age in his eyes and playing style belying his kid looks
Toy lost both his younger brothers within a month of each other to car accidents and as PT L said he was also a United States Marine Corps Vietnam War combat vet (WIA). That's him singing with incredible soul and thumbpicking that beautiful Gibson Les Paul of his. Thank you for everything brother. Rest easy.
A little over a decade ago I was in the back room of a bar in Oregon, playing poker with a few dozen other folks. This song came on the jukebox, and a large man in a camouflage vest and a red Budweiser hat exclaimed in a loud voice, "Man, if you don't like Marshall Tucker, you can get the fuck out of here!" And we all silently nodded, because yeah, if you don't like Marshall Tucker, you CAN get the fuck out of here.
This is southern rock at it's finest. The flute solo at the beginning & end is great especially in the live version. Love their music from the 70's. Some of their other big hits were "Fire on the Mountain" & "Heard It in a Love Song". Southern rock fiddler Charlie Daniels did quite a few collaborations with them.
Wife here..We had a festival in the middle 2000's in my area (which is considered small town) ..hosted these guys as the main act one year...So Baddass they have a flutist!!..Thank you for reviewing this Jem...
Saw them warm up for The Allman Brothers Band MANY MANY years ago in Saratoga, New York for an outdoor concert. Jumped on a bus in Manhattan to get there with two friends and rained all the way - until we pull into town and the sun comes out. Never forget that day.
The live version has an extra verse and a beautiful guitar rift from Toy Caldwell. It was the first appearance on the Grand Old Opry by a southern rock group. It's my favorite version to listen to even though, because it's an old black and white recording with a 1 second miss in it, it is absolutely beautiful. Even if you don't react to, you owe it to yourself to view it.
This is the Grand Opera House in Macon, Ga, not the Grand Old Opry. The night the version you refer to, Wet Willie and the Allman Brothers played as well. The individual appearing at the beginning and clapping is Wet Willie's lead singer, Jimmy Hall.
The MTB is from Spartenburg SC, a short jaunt down I85 from my hometown, so as a kid growing up in the 70's I grew up on their music. Saw them live in late 80's and had backstage passes to meet the band after the show. Typical rural S.C. boys, down to earth, friendly and humble.
Hi guys. I don't care what kind of music someone likes. Rock, Folk, Blues, Country, Jazz, R&B, Soul, Rockabilly, Great guitar. If you like any or all of those, you are going to find something to love about Southern Rock. It truly is as American as anything else. For another great tune, check out little Feat's Dixie Chicken. There are a lot of video versions of it on YT, and they range from about 5 minutes up to about 12 minutes or more.
Saw these guys in concert a couple times...once opening for Lynyrd Skynyrd, another time opening for The Allman Brothers. Favorite song though is "Fire on the Mountain". Check that one out sometime!
Absolutely. Andy my husband just pointed out his unique thumb method of playing. And don’t forget that voice. He sounds like he’s 45 and had a hell of a life. And he looks fricking 19. Beautiful guitar.Beautiful voice. And beautiful lyrics.
You guys crack me up😂 I love it❤ I love you both❤ To be honest I've never heard of this band or this song, but after listening to it now...I have to say, I'm kinda hooked on this southern rock vibe. Thankyou for sharing with us Asia & Bj💖💖💖 FOE
I love how much you both understand and appreciate Southern Rock. It’s got so much soul woven into it. Songs like this are timeless. They will never go out of style..
My first concert I ever went to at the tender age of 13 it was absolutely incredible!! Their music live in concert was even better than any recording I have ever heard!!
My second favorite Southern Rock band after The Allman Brothers Band. Where as The Allman Brothers Band were more blues influenced, The Marshall Tucker Band were more on the country side, but like all Southern Rock bands, they could cover all genres, and mash them into one. "Can't You See" is a true classic, and it's writer, vocalist and lead guitarist Toy Caldwell is a true legend - and his unique style of playing guitar was always phenomenal to watch as his thumb picking style was incredibly fast,he was known as the best. Another great Marshall Tucker Band track to listen to,and one that highlights regular vocalist Doug Greys unreal style, and Toy Caldwells great guitar picking is "Asking Too Much Of You" it's worth a look and listen.
The more genres in a song the more I like it. This song means everything to me.I went through the worst time of my life. Separation. Divorce. Smear campaign. Mostly missing my kids half the week. Destroyed me I say now God had to build me up from scratch. I was a shell. So I’d given up everything that reminded me of my life prior. Music was the last thing to go. And the first thing I brought back. I was finally ready after 5-6 months to go out again socially. Went out with my best friend since high school who was the only one there for me and her husband. I automatically went to the jukebox though I hadn’t listened to music for months. Played this song. A table next to us started singing along (way younger than us). We started singing along. Something in my soul changed that day. I was out of the darkness and into the light. Don’t know how to describe it. God smiling down on me I guess. God showing me it was gonna be okay. And I was.
I love how much music can move my soul. When you feel it in every crevice of your body, in every cell, how can you not be totally taken away. It’s a beautiful feeling
One you will love is Queensryche, live in Japan, singing “Take hold of the flame”. Incredible voice. You will be blown away if I feel you all correctly.
Derby Eve Jam in Louisville, Ky in the mid 70s with Marshall Tucker, Charlie Daniels and Wet Willie. All three bands ended up on stage playing and three huge circles of people holding hands and dancing formed on the floor going around and around. What a concert that was! The best in my books.
My dad was a big music guy. When he was in hospice me and my brothers sat around his bed and held his hand listening to music. This song was playing . Now everytime i hear it I think of him.
I used to sit on deck of our cabin looking out over the lake and turn the volume up!!!! Marshall Tucker Band, one of the best!!! Nothing like Southern Rock!
I have seen them in concert a number of times. An old buddy of mine went to school with one of them. When he got married Marshall Tucker was the band that played his reception. Was kinda cool !!! They were really cool dudes.
Love listening to music with y'all. It always brightens my day. That song nearly always astonishes people the first time they hear it. MTB has a ton of great music.
I was 15 years old when I first heard this, a friend of mine brought this record over to the house and said you gotta hear this, I went out and bought my own afterwards and about wore that vinyl out it’s still as good as the first day I heard it!
I saw them several times in the 70’s . Best of times with my friends. This song is still my favorite still blasting it when riding around when it comes on. ❤️🤘✌️
Awesome choice. So many epic songs. I saw them many times and they were always incredible. A huge favorite in my peer group too. RIP Toy Caldwell. Gone but never forgotten.
I remember reading an article explaining why this is the greatest song ever made. After reading it, I was like, you know, I can't argue with that. I don't have a single issue with people considering this the best song ever.
I grew up in the late sixties through the 70s. My generation had hundreds of Super Talented Musicians and artists. I'm 65, very much alive and still ROCKN****
Marshall Tucker, Molly Hatchet, Charlie Daniels Band, Lynyrd Skynyrd…all were considered rock back in the day. Every rock station played them. I think it’s now mostly heard on either country or classic rock stations.
Heard it in a love song is my favorite of theirs. I think of my uncle who has passed every time I hear them, Queen, and Pink Floyd. My mother and him really exposed me to a wide array of music.
Nobody in the band was named Marshall Tucker! Marshall Tucker was the name on the label attached to the key chain on the key to their rehearsal studio!
MY favorite Southern Rock band along with Skynyrd and the Allman Brothers is Drive by Truckers. Zip City, Decoration Day, or Puttin People On the Moon.
They were formed in Spartanburg, SC. And their friends from Skynard, Allmans, and others tried to get them to move to LA in the 70's, but they said they were Spartanburg boys, and would stay there, even to this day. So they did not make those LA connections. Probably why they are not on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. But their roots were more important to them than fame.
ABB is next level to the rest, but point is well taken...
@@thatmanstumototours2270 Totally agree with that assessment, but these guys are great. The ABB is absurdly great.
True story Craig!!
CCR is from California

I can see. Thank you for the Bio. I had no idea.
Yes, thank you for recommending the live version. Beat me to it. When I saw it, it was like I was hearing the song for the first time, again.
Thank you for posting that about him.
Toy lost both his younger brothers within a month of each other to car accidents and as PT L said he was also a United States Marine Corps Vietnam War combat vet (WIA). Hahaha. This is epic.
That's one of my favorite goddamn things I've ever heard. God bless that man.
I'm from Portland and I can see that !!!
Damn straight and right on!
A few dozen? How many cards in that deck?
One of my all time favorite pieces of Southern Rock.
Yes David!
This is a good version studio version you need to check out the black and white live version I think 1972 freaking phenomenal
i agree 100% this live version is a must see
No doubt. It was recorded in the Ryman Theater in Nashville. Great venue. Great performance.
The best version is off of "Searchin' For a Rainbow". Period. End of debate.
It makes me happy to see both of you loving this song so much.
Love some Marshall Tucker Band! “Heard It In A Love Song” is my favorite!
There's no art better than the blend of Rock, Blues and Country that speaks to damn near everybody in an empathetic and compassionate way.
I've seen Marshall Tucker in concert several times. It's the best way to experience their music. Amazing band in every way!
I saw these guys in 1974 and it is the best concert I ever attended. Awesome band with so many good songs.
Wife here..We had a festival in the middle 2000's in my area (which is considered small town) ..hosted these guys as the main act one year...So Baddass they have a flutist!!..Thank you for reviewing this Jem...

You guys need to tap into "Fire on the Mountain" and "Seraching for a Rainbow" for sure.
throw in 24 hours at a time
The Marshall Tucker Band "Heard It In A Love Song",, "Take The Highway" & "Fire On The Mountain"

Favorite song though is "Fire on the Mountain". Check that one out sometime!
Check out the live version! Great song!
Humanity is not lost humans. You two are adorable!!! Loved everything about watching you two enjoy wonderful music.
Toy is probably the most underrated forgotten guitarists!
Absolutely. Andy my husband just pointed out his unique thumb method of playing. And don’t forget that voice. He sounds like he’s 45 and had a hell of a life. And he looks fricking 19. Beautiful guitar.Beautiful voice. And beautiful lyrics.
This song is groovy. That is probably not the adjective that comes to most folks' minds but there is a definite, underlying groove to the entire song.
And, no.
I truly get what you mean, but I will never use that Brady Bunch word.
Breezy is the one it evokes for me.
Wind in your hair.
The live video of this song is amazing !!
Dobie Grey and "Drift Away" is another great song in this vein. BJ would love it!
They fell into the gap between The Allman Bros and Skynard. Didn't get the recognition they deserved IMO. Heard it in a Love Song is my fav.
You guys crack me up😂 I love it❤ I love you both❤ To be honest I've never heard of this band or this song, but after listening to it now...I have to say, I'm kinda hooked on this southern rock vibe. Thankyou for sharing with us Asia & Bj💖💖💖 FOE
Grew up with so many different kinds of music. All on the same radio station! One of my fav mixes is country/rock/blues.
Every time I hear this, I feel the same way y’all felt- I love this song! The live version is even better.
I love watching you two feel the music that people my age grew up with!
My concert ever ( age 8) was Marshall Tucker Band, and other southern rock bands at a biker rally! Had too much fun "dancing" in front of the stage 😂
I had the pleasure of seeing this band , Toy Caldwell one of the best fingerstyle guitarpickers ever . . One of the most loved southern rock bands .
My second favorite Southern Rock band after The Allman Brothers Band. I love how much music can move my soul. When you feel it in every crevice of your body, in every cell, how can you not be totally taken away. It’s a beautiful feeling
Marshall Tucker is One of the Greatest American Rock bands
I first heard them in the mid 70's. Still a fan.
I recommend yall listen to the album version. It's got even more to love.
One you will love is Queensryche, live in Japan, singing “Take hold of the flame”. Incredible voice. You will be blown away if I feel you all correctly.

The pride of Spartanburg SC.
I recommend the song,
'Too Stubborn'. If you like soulful country blues, this is the tops.
One of my top 5 songs of all time. The best.
I have to say
I’m lovin’ your journey of discovery, with all of these classic rock songs
Please keep them coming
Love you 2
My dad was a big music guy. When he was in hospice me and my brothers sat around his bed and held his hand listening to music. This song was playing . Now everytime i hear it I think of him.

Toy Caldwell's raspy voice holds so much emotion! ✌
I was 15 years old when I first heard this, a friend of mine brought this record over to the house and said you gotta hear this, I went out and bought my own afterwards and about wore that vinyl out it’s still as good as the first day I heard it!
The old vinyl. Miss it.
The emotion in this song chokes me up every time
Great reaction. Their entire 'Carolina Dreams' album is fire.
Toy lost his two brothers in a short time and had a tremendous impacted on him….this band is well worth digging deep into ✌️
Excellent southern rock example.... plus just a great song. Thank y'all.
I saw them several times in the 70’s . Best of times with my friends. This song is still my favorite still blasting it when riding around when it comes on. ❤️🤘✌️
The black & white live version from 1973 is actually longer with more lyrics. A must see video. These guys were very good live.
This song instantly reminds me of my Father. One his favorites when I was a child, became one of mine.
Great South Carolina band. Fire on the Mountain is a must.
Yass. Another goodie. Can't help but sing along. Love the truth to the other side. When a man loves a woman, the emotions it brings.
Live version from the Grand Ole Opry is the best.
This and Heard it in a Love Song are my 2 favorite tunes by Marshal Tucker band!
Awesome southern rock
Southern artists born before 1950 all had great blues
Love the Marshall Tucker Band. Just good blues based Southern Rock. They had the coolest album covers too.

A man pouring his soul out in a song with his excellent band!!!! 💯🤗❤✌
I agree the black/white live version is worth checking out!
Great song.
You should have done the live version.
Toy Caldwell also wrote Can’t you see! Must watch the live version.
I always loved this band and this song was fricken awesome and dope and the flutes were a beautiful touch
Southern rock exploded on the scene with great memories for these guys, The Allman Brothers etc.
they originated in Spartanburg County 30 mins from where i live in Powdersville SC
No fucking way I was just playing this on guitar... One of my favorite songs! You guys were reacting to it... Weird circumstance hah
Heard it in a love song is my favorite of theirs. I think of my uncle who has passed every time I hear them, Queen, and Pink Floyd. My mother and him really exposed me to a wide array of music.
The lead guitar player and singer of this song Toy Caldwell was a Marine in Viet Nam made it home with the Purple Heart
Something about this song. Never gets old
Allman Brothers, Skynyrd and Marshal Tucker is the Trinity of southern rock
Legend, real humans playing it all imperfect with no autotune, quantization. Love it.
Saw them several times in the early 70s, opened for Skynard, CDB and headlined too.. Don't git no better !!
Love this song. R.I.P. Toy Caldwell.
I love your interpretation. He has no one else but the Lord to talk too.. been there...
Named #1 Southern Rock Song of all time
Nobody in the band was named Marshall Tucker! Marshall Tucker was the name on the label attached to the key chain on the key to their rehearsal studio!
I'm with my brother B.J., I may be a Yankee, but my soul is southern rock.
MY favorite Southern Rock band along with Skynyrd and the Allman Brothers is Drive by Truckers. Zip City, Decoration Day, or Puttin People On the Moon.
You don’t hear this song, you feel it… all music should make you feel something 🎶🎵
Makes me think about dad . R.I.P. 🌹❤️

The best of Western Cowboy Rock by this Southern Rock Band.
There is a black and white, live video of this, from the early 70s. It’s a longer version of the song, and I think y’all would enjoy it. Love the MTB.
This song always reminds me Whipping Post. Love both of them so much.
Love me some southern rock especially MTB and the Allmans! Glad you loved it!
It is a legendary song for sure.
Great reaction! Marshall Tucker is one of my favorite all time country rock bands along with The Outlaws and Lynrd Skynrd.
Watch the video and see his angst! He FEEEEEEELS IT!
