Cool Music Historical fact: The bass player of the Animals, Chas Chandler discovered Jimi Hendrix in New York and brought him to London to help Hendrix launch his career.
Future
Fun fact they are from where I'm from Newcastle upon Tyne
The Beatles are scousers (people from Liverpool)
The animals are geordies (people from Newcastle and Gateshead) other then them being bands from the United Kingdom I don't see any similarities,
A little later on Chas discovered, managed, and produced Slade.
Eric was 23/24 in this performance. Yes, he has an older man's voice. Another big song of theirs is Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood. Thank you for reacting to this song. Always loved it.
An older man's voice? I think you mean that he has someone else's voice. Like a black American's voice.
I always thought it was so cool how an older man's voice could come out of him. And a very good voice!
musik102. No sorry, the most frequent comments made by those both familiar and unfamiliar with Eric Boudon’s voice is one that is older than his years and that he sings with soul.
@@salbuda6957 Oh dear! He was imitating older US black men. And, if you can't hear that...well, you're a hopeless case.
Eric was also the Eggman who Lennon mentions in ' I am the Walrus'. I won't mention the reason why.
Here's a historic tribute to the impact of this song. It was released at a time when the Beatles had the top five spots on the hit parade. It knocked them off and took number one.
@Jerr Elliott. Not in the US, must have been the UK!? 🙂
@@salbuda6957 shit, regardless of where it happened thas insane lol
He was 23 at the time of this song, looked 18 and sounded 40.
he sounded more like 30 to me.
Eric is in his 80's now! One of the very first 45's this Baby Boomer ever bought! I love this group! 🥰🥰🥰🤗🤗
I’ll tell you this, the Viet Nam War was controversial, but boy did that hippie movement bring the best music ever. Look up Viet Nam era songs. You would love them. You’ve already listened to many of them. Listen to For What It’s Worth by Buffalo Springfield. Great, great song as well.
As amazing as the Ken Burns Vietnam Documentary was, the soundtrack was just as good. So impactful
The soundtrack to the old tv show Tour of Duty is amazing for that very reason.
I agree. I love the soundtrack. I also bought the DVDs of the series. My dad was in Nam so I wanted to understand it better.
I totally agree…but this wasn’t one of those songs. Just a blues classic they started playing on tour with Chuck Berry, before we were all in on Vietnam.
That's the thing about Eric: you see this youthful face, and out of it comes this ancient, grizzled, old soul who has seen the worst of everything in mankind.
Eric Burdon is now in his early 80's and still singing! He is fantastic! I was ten years old when this song came out! I loved it then , I still love this song! 🥰🥰🥰🥰👍👍👍
For a 23 year old, his voice sounds like he's lived a 100 lives
He sounds like 16
@@GameStop-li5hp No, you do.

Check out the singer, Eric Burdon..and WAR singing “Spill the wine”. 💕
Get that pearl...
His voice is STILL a surprise even after so many years. Would LOVE you guys to react to David Bowie Where are we now?
Incredibly bluesy and soulful voice for someone of his age.
He's said he listened to Ray Charles, Muddy Waters, and Big Joe Turner growing up.
I grew up in the 60s with this group the animals. Their music was our music, and it was all good… This is a great rabbit hole to go down because they did some good stuff
Same here!
Boy, ain't that so!! There was NO nostalgic "oldies" back then. The amount of incredible music and artists that came out every single week, week in and week out, year after year, during that time, boggles the mind. Lordy! We had no idea that we were in the midst of a phenomenon. We just thought that was the way life goes - a never ending stream of amazing music! I remember hearing the "oldies" radio station for the first time back in the late 70's. I thought it was just the weirdest thing to be playing music from my high school years. GREAT time to be young! And now we get to enjoy young people discovering what we have known all along - how GREAT is this!!!
This song is an old blues song that was originally recorded by Lead Belly in the early 1930's.
The house of the Rising Sun was a brothel in New Orleans.
When the Animals came to America on tour, they were looking for an American song to sing and came across this one and created magic with it.
You may like the lead singer Eric Burdon, singing "Spill the Wine," with the group War.
War is a deep rabbit hole they should definitely explore!
His voice has the soul of an old man who has lived that life, he embodies it, and the song itself is of unknown origins, many think dating back to the early 19th century.
A few commented on his young looks he was 23 then. To me he was a great singer also a great band. Many good songs:: We gotta get out of this Place, Don't let me be Misunderstood, it's my Life. Monterey, and maybe my favorite Sky Pilot an anti war song. When he was with WAR in 70 had a great song Spill the Wine very physadelic, I dug physadelic music.
I think they really should listen to Spill the Wine next
I really appreciate you taking time to give a background and history of each song. Music is such an important part of our history and captures the differences in cultures but also opens our eyes to the things we share musically and ultimately bring us together. Great job!
The pianist in this band is supreme. I like them all but I've always appreciated their pianist.
The genius of this song is that slow build of the instruments until the end they are going all in...tension in the music and that voice...
When the guy's going off on the keyboard, it's a very chaotic sound, like a car careening out of control. Like this boy felt like his life was going.
One take, my dude. They caught this on the first take. Phenomenal
I throw around the word “classic” a lot but this is a Classic!
That organ is insane…
Eric Burdon has the voice of an old soul.
The keyboard is called a 'Hammond.'
It gave a very unique sound to 60's music.Once you hear it you will never forget that sound.
Its the Vox Organ That The Doors use.
Singer's voice: big range; can hit those high notes very well,
Eric Burdon has a powerful voice. He also founded the band "War" which put out many hits.
An all time top 10 song. Haunting, infectious, irresistible and condemned to a doomed life blues rock of the first order. The origin of the song and author are unknown. It is somehow better this way.
If you like the Animals, then you gotta check out “Sky Pilot”, “San Franciscan Nights” and “Monterey.” If you wanna hear Eric Burden without the Animals, listen to “Spill The Wine.”
An intensely intense song. Mesmerizing. Hypnotizing. Hard not to watch this 3 or 4 times at a time.
About an all night party house that has gambling and working girls. It's about how he is following in his dads foot steps and hanging out in the place and living that life style. This song reminds me of Mobile which has the same culture.BTW My dad lived a life style like this but it was Detroit.
At the time of this song in 1964 The Beatles had the top 4 hits and this song knocked them out as this song took number 1. The girl on the left is right though he looks 12. Eric is still singing today in his 80's. Sometimes folks are just born with pure unadulterated talent. They have 2-3 other big hits...
Fantastic!Eric Burton's gritty voice from Newcastle UK.🇬🇧👍
Eric Burdon is a blues rock singer. This is an old blues standard. Originally meant to be about a brothel. They reworked the lyrics to turn "The House" into a prison.
No they didn’t, it’s still about a whore house and gambling establishment. The Ball and Chain reference is about being addicted to the place.
Eric Burdon's voice is a commanding presence.
My favorite part is when the band starts ramping up and gets as loud as they can. It's like a contest between his voice and them, and his voice wins. Amazing.
They didn't have a ton of great songs. We gotta get out of this place is good. CC rider us good. Bring it on home is great. There are others but rose are the best ones I know.
He has an actual voice that does not need synth.
Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood is definitely worth a listen.
You guys don’t know this but bassist in the animals is the guy who founded jimmi hendrix and got him his big break .
You can search on youtube for Ed Sullivan Animals and watch the video of their first live appearance in America on his show. It's absolutely awesome - you can't help but feel like you're watching Eric Burdon become a superstar right before your eyes.
This was a cover of an old folk song about the actual bawdy house, the Rising Sun.
THE ANIMALS, "HOUSE OF THE RISING SUN". Lead singer Eric Burden, with his powerful, Soulful, voice. This is the song that got my attention to music, and it's change from Bee Bop, too Rock and Roll. Part of the British Invasion in 1963. I was 7, and this was the first Album I bought at age 11. THE BEST of THE ANIMALS. more... "BRING ON HOME TOO ME", "DON'T LET ME BE MISUNDERSTOOD", "WE GOTTA GET OUT OF THIS PLACE".
Do you know - the guy playing bass discovered Jimmy Hendrix and promoted him later on.
The singer of The Animals here is Eric Burden and he is about 23 years old when he sang this. And yes, basically every reactor says the same thing that is voice does not match his face.
Believe it or not, they were in a hurry and did this song and video on the first take. Now that's talent!
He sounds like a older soul in a younger man
The Guitarist, Hilton Valentine, is laughing because in an unseen camera angle not in the video, is that the Bass Player, Chas Chandler, hit his head on the over head of the structure they pass through. He stated that reason in a past interview. My Favorite song, since 1969, age 7.
Part of the British invasion along with the Beatles. The bands were often filmed on tv shows and this one is kind of an odd presentation with them solemnly strolling around. A lot of the groups wore suits which made them seem more formal and uniform. This song is a real classic and his voice is deep and old., sexy and sinister.
This song was recorded in one take. No redos. About 20 minutes -- that all the studio time they could afford. At just over 4 minutes long, it was one of the longest, if not the longest single recorded at that time and was frequesting cut to 3 minutes for radio play. It was the second single they release at it immediately hit #1 on the UK ans US charts, knocking the Beatles out of place. They hated the suits and ties thast their manager made them wear byt, hey, the Beatles. All five were very rough, working class lads whereas the Stones and the Beatles were more middle class. If you like Chas Chandler's bass, check out "We've Gotta Get Out of This Place" Here live, live (not pre-recorded live) from the Ed Sullivan Show. ua-cam.com/video/PclhNB8BiwI/v-deo.html
Here's another, less inhibited live performance of "We've Gotta Get Out of This Place" ua-cam.com/video/PA3wXOKlddU/v-deo.html
The bassist was jimmy Hendrix manager
The reason they are walking, is the funeral procession, like the old ones in New Orleans. The FUNERAL IS HIS, he is going back to the brothels, and alcohol addiction (ball and chain) like his father did. His somber look through the video is because he is dead inside, he has 1 foot on the platform and the other on the train. He isn't coming back.
Great review. Eric Burton has a strong personality and is a great natural singer. I liked him best with War. Check out "Eric Burton & War - Spill the Wine". He sounds very different than his singing this song. He still dominates. It's my favorite Eric Burton song.
This was the first record I bought with my pocket money back in the 60's and I've still got it
Great reaction LWR, The Animals ((IMO) were the Top 3 bands of The British Invasion behind The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. If you think Eric Burdon sounded old react to the Animals "When I Was Young" also "We Gotta Get Out of This Place" "It's My Life" "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" "Don't Bring Me Down" and "Sky Pilot" Try to listen to the Audio Version of these songs because the videos sound quality isn't good.
Well, Like The Beatles, The Animals were from England - where most of the great bands come from
Both from NORTHERN England.
@@richardbrown8966 🤣 One Northwest England, one Northeast England. Us Southern Englanders will have to make do with Pink Floyd, David Bowie, The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, Portishead, Kate Bush, The Jam, The Clash...
Super reaction, again 👊💪
Good music, not old music, like some people used to say. It's even younger then me😄still rocking here (long hair and every thing)👊
Back in the days everybody who tried to play the guitar, learned this lick, i know i did.
Eric Burdon is one of the coolest guys ever in rock music. Please check out what he did with a band called WAR, i think you'll like it.
👊❤from Holland
I always kinda thought Heath Ledger looked like Eric Burdon. Weird that Eric outlived him. This is one of those all-time great mesmerizing songs.
"We Gotta Get Out of This Place" by the Animals..
Monterey is one of their best songs. It's all about the Monterey Pop Festival which happened before Woodstock and was a precursor to the biggest rock concert of all time. Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood is also great. For a while there the big three were the Beatles, the Stones and the Animals. They ruled the world from the mid to the late sixties. Awesome stuff.
The animals lead singer Eric Burdon went on to become lead singer for the group War. Listen to "Spill the Wine"
The bass player Chas Chandler went on to produce Jimi Hendrix when he first came to England.
An interview with Eric Burdon revealed that he first heard the song in a club in Newcastle, England, where it was sung by the Northumbrian folk singer Johnny Handle. The Animals were on tour with Chuck Berry and chose it because they wanted something distinctive to sing.
The Animals had begun featuring their arrangement of "The House of the Rising Sun" during a joint concert tour with Chuck Berry, using it as their closing number to differentiate themselves from acts that always closed with straight rockers. It got a tremendous reaction from the audience, convincing initially reluctant producer Mickie Most that it had hit potential, and between tour stops the group went to a small recording studio on Kingsway in London to capture it. The song was recorded in just one take on May 18th, 1964 it took 15 minutes to record.
"House of the Rising Sun" was a trans-Atlantic hit: after reaching the top of the UK pop singles chart in July 1964, it topped the US pop singles chart two months later, on September 5, 1964, where it stayed for three weeks. Many cite this as the first true classic rock song, and became the first British Invasion number one hit that was not connected with the Beatles.
The organist/keyboard Alan Price has the best version of I put a Spell on you, after (Screaming Jay Hawkins).
omg. LOL. i just posted on FB how much i friggin hate this song and asked if any of my FB friends hated a popular song. i friggin LOVE The Animals. but for whatever reason, i really don't know why ...Just never ever liked this song by them. but nothing personal. great band. can't put my finger on it. Anyways i gave u a thumbs up cuz i like your Channel. checkout I'm Crying by The Animals next!
Maybe because you heard the Dylan version or maybe because it changes gender from the original.
It was always weird to me how this great British Rock band took a Dolly Parton song and had a monster hit with it. Dolly was a song writing genius.
Yeah you know what I'm telling you man is this just came out the same time that they came to America The Beatles you know and that was 64 on Ed Sullivan so yeah did you notice how they were all marching in a slow procession? Well that was because that was indicated of a funeral procession which is something of a huge tradition in New Orleans you know one of the greatest crimes against humanity is Louis Armstrong didn't get to have a New Orleans funeral because it's so damn cool I mean they do this real slow and sad song You Know and then they break into oh when the saints come marching in it's amazing that these Lads are from England they just loved American Music so much the ambulated it uni unique way you know it's the same with the Beatles And The Rolling Stones and all of that that's a whole nother story you know it's a trip dude and my dear girl is that wow that bass you were talking about you were complimenting the bass well that's none other than Chas Chandler and if it wasn't for that man perhaps Jimi Hendrix would have never gotten his break because he brought him to England and put a band around him and of course got his meteoric rise from all that and you know Eric Burdon what's the one who put together a band called War you got to do a reaction to Spill the Wine dig that Pearl and of course War went on to do other songs like the lowrider among many other Greek Tunes okay you two crazy kids
I know how much you appreciate Queen - and rightfully, much of the focus is generally on Freddie Mercury… but don’t sleep on Queen guitarist Brian May. Not only one of the best guitarists, but and incredible voice. Check out, among others, “Too Much Love Will Kill You”.
i understand what you mean. Eric Burdon looks so petite and youthful, but his voice sounds deep and aged.
His voice is that of a weathered, experienced older man. A tortured man who's seen a lot of life. And it contrasts his young, fresh faced look. It always threw people off to see him sing in person.
*The Animals were the kind of band who'd beat up the Beatles and take their allowances.
their performance of this song on the ed sullivan show is so much better..
Great song!
Eric was 24 here...later he joined the band War...when you check them out you'll see him continue his career with many greats...check out We Gotta Get Outta This Place...a huge hit during Vietnam...did you notice the keyboard was moved at the end from the background to the foreground and he never missed a key
The Animals came not all that
far away from me in North East England I have always loved this song from the first time hearing it in the 60s
In the Beatles song “I am the Walrus” the egg man is Eric Burdon. A nickname John Lennon gave to Burdon after he told Lennon a amusing story of a sexual encounter.
Eric Burdon has got solid, church pipes for days...... check them out doin' a tune named " See See Rider" Make sure you get The Animals version not Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels lol
hey, Recklezz. They should remind you of the Beatles. The Animals were a British Invasion group. They followed the Beatles and The Rolling Stones to America and onto the Pop charts in the mid 1960s. Yes. You caught it right. Same genre and era.
It’s my life by the animals
You said you liked the bass playing in this song. It may interest you to know that the bass player in this band (Chas Chandler) became a talent scout and manager. He discovered Jimi Hendrix in New York playing under a different name and persuaded him to go to Britain with him and was a key figure in Hendrix's rise to success.
Eric burdon vocal Chas Chandler bass.john steel drums.hilton valentine guitar. Alan price keyboard.chas and Hilton are gone Alan left the band in 1966.eric still performs.
Check out: 15y old Steve Winwood - "Nobody Knows You When You're Down And Out"
Steve is another great singer who's voice doesn't (didn't) match his age.
That ending always cracks me up when the guitarist right behind the singer has that goofy smile. Can't help laughing every time I see it.
Don't forget the Beatles, but the Animals,a band from Newcastle, the North of England, their live concerts in the mid 60s were rock and roll, absolute riots, punk before punk !!!
Eric said one of the reasons they split up was the fact that Alan Price the keyboard player got virtually all the royalties from this song as he did the arrangement.
You should give Jimi Hendrix a listen. “Little wing”, “if 6 was 9”, and “the wind cries Mary” are a few of my favorites
Nice color on you sweetie!!
The lead singer was only 23!!
Does this man realise there are thousands of words in the English language, if the word LIKE was removed from the dictionary he would be struck dumb.
He's a North East English Man what's known as Geordy in the UK 🇬🇧. They have a sing song accent. 🎵 very surprising if not heard before.
Because young white boys were trying to sound like old black men from the south, that is, traditional blues singers
Once rock really took off and they stopped wearing suits and walking around miming their songs, his voice suited him so much better. lol
Eric Burdon has a deep powerful blues rock voice. Eric is 81years old now and still going strong and touring! Try reacting to the song Monterey.
And that folks, is what an orange top Vox Continental V301J organ with English wooden keys and custom shortened valve stops sounds like....
This is a gender switched cover. The song was originally about a woman who ended up in the "House of the Rising Sun" - a brothel.
The bands not going with his voice, everything is going towards the song. Listen to more animals and you will hear their versatility.
You have to remember back then there was no music digital input or anything. Just them!
He looks like 12.That guy would kick the living shit out of most people you know.
Check them out singing this live on the Ed Sullivan Show. It’s pretty incredible. ✌️
Fun note. Bass player Chas Chandler was the manager for Jimi Hendrix and Slade.
In my opinion, the word you were most likely looking for with regards the lead singer's voice is "soulful". He sounds more soulful than his face would suggest.
I think the original of this song was led Belly in the 1940s.
He must like buffalo ny because still in the early 2000s he would play at free concert in the park. Im old but it never really dawned on me that guys older than my parents, here he is playing at a free concert.
Everybody is thrown by the voice that comes from a guy who still looks like a teenager.
