I totally agree…but this wasn’t one of those songs. Just a blues classic they started playing on tour with Chuck Berry, before we were all in on Vietnam.
That's the thing about Eric: you see this youthful face, and out of it comes this ancient, grizzled, old soul who has seen the worst of everything in mankind.
Eric Burdon is now in his early 80's and still singing! He is fantastic! I was ten years old when this song came out! I loved it then , I still love this song! 🥰🥰🥰🥰👍👍👍
I really appreciate you taking time to give a background and history of each song. Music is such an important part of our history and captures the differences in cultures but also opens our eyes to the things we share musically and ultimately bring us together. Great job!
His voice has the soul of an old man who has lived that life, he embodies it, and the song itself is of unknown origins, many think dating back to the early 19th century.
I grew up in the 60s with this group the animals. Their music was our music, and it was all good… This is a great rabbit hole to go down because they did some good stuff
Boy, ain't that so!! There was NO nostalgic "oldies" back then. The amount of incredible music and artists that came out every single week, week in and week out, year after year, during that time, boggles the mind. Lordy! We had no idea that we were in the midst of a phenomenon. We just thought that was the way life goes - a never ending stream of amazing music! I remember hearing the "oldies" radio station for the first time back in the late 70's. I thought it was just the weirdest thing to be playing music from my high school years. GREAT time to be young! And now we get to enjoy young people discovering what we have known all along - how GREAT is this!!!
This song is an old blues song that was originally recorded by Lead Belly in the early 1930's. The house of the Rising Sun was a brothel in New Orleans. When the Animals came to America on tour, they were looking for an American song to sing and came across this one and created magic with it.
The reason they are walking, is the funeral procession, like the old ones in New Orleans. The FUNERAL IS HIS, he is going back to the brothels, and alcohol addiction (ball and chain) like his father did. His somber look through the video is because he is dead inside, he has 1 foot on the platform and the other on the train. He isn't coming back.
At the time of this song in 1964 The Beatles had the top 4 hits and this song knocked them out as this song took number 1. The girl on the left is right though he looks 12. Eric is still singing today in his 80's. Sometimes folks are just born with pure unadulterated talent. They have 2-3 other big hits...
A few commented on his young looks he was 23 then. To me he was a great singer also a great band. Many good songs:: We gotta get out of this Place, Don't let me be Misunderstood, it's my Life. Monterey, and maybe my favorite Sky Pilot an anti war song. When he was with WAR in 70 had a great song Spill the Wine very physadelic, I dug physadelic music.
His voice is that of a weathered, experienced older man. A tortured man who's seen a lot of life. And it contrasts his young, fresh faced look. It always threw people off to see him sing in person. *The Animals were the kind of band who'd beat up the Beatles and take their allowances.
An all time top 10 song. Haunting, infectious, irresistible and condemned to a doomed life blues rock of the first order. The origin of the song and author are unknown. It is somehow better this way.
About an all night party house that has gambling and working girls. It's about how he is following in his dads foot steps and hanging out in the place and living that life style. This song reminds me of Mobile which has the same culture.BTW My dad lived a life style like this but it was Detroit.

You can search on youtube for Ed Sullivan Animals and watch the video of their first live appearance in America on his show. It's absolutely awesome - you can't help but feel like you're watching Eric Burdon become a superstar right before your eyes.
Eric Burdon is a blues rock singer. This is an old blues standard. Originally meant to be about a brothel. They reworked the lyrics to turn "The House" into a prison.
An interview with Eric Burdon revealed that he first heard the song in a club in Newcastle, England, where it was sung by the Northumbrian folk singer Johnny Handle. The Animals were on tour with Chuck Berry and chose it because they wanted something distinctive to sing. The Animals had begun featuring their arrangement of "The House of the Rising Sun" during a joint concert tour with Chuck Berry, using it as their closing number to differentiate themselves from acts that always closed with straight rockers. It got a tremendous reaction from the audience, convincing initially reluctant producer Mickie Most that it had hit potential, and between tour stops the group went to a small recording studio on Kingsway in London to capture it. The song was recorded in just one take on May 18th, 1964 it took 15 minutes to record. "House of the Rising Sun" was a trans-Atlantic hit: after reaching the top of the UK pop singles chart in July 1964, it topped the US pop singles chart two months later, on September 5, 1964, where it stayed for three weeks. Many cite this as the first true classic rock song, and became the first British Invasion number one hit that was not connected with the Beatles.

Monterey is one of their best songs. It's all about the Monterey Pop Festival which happened before Woodstock and was a precursor to the biggest rock concert of all time. Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood is also great. For a while there the big three were the Beatles, the Stones and the Animals. They ruled the world from the mid to the late sixties. Awesome stuff.

Part of the British invasion along with the Beatles. The bands were often filmed on tv shows and this one is kind of an odd presentation with them solemnly strolling around. A lot of the groups wore suits which made them seem more formal and uniform. This song is a real classic and his voice is deep and old., sexy and sinister.
