    This is still a VERY popular gun in Italy, because 9mm parabellum is not available to the civilians, only 9x21 IWI, and if you want a small gun but familiar to people who used the m9 in service, this is a nice alternative. But James, please, never say "gnocchi" again like that in front of an Italian...

    When I began my law enforcement career in 2000 the man who hired me, the chief of police, carried a Beretta 84 with wood grips. It was always amusing to walk into the arms vault and see all the boxes of 9mm and 45ACP (we had a choice of pistols from an approved list, I carried the SIG P220 at the start of my career) and a small group of 380 hardball and hollowpoints for the chief.

    This gun was in every gun and pawn shop in the 80's and early 90's. I always liked it and wondered if it offered something we're missing. A larger .380 for personal defense that gives you more barrel length and gun in hand to fight with without excessive recoil.

    • @emu314159
      @emu314159 Рік тому +4

      I'd say so, with the rise of actually viable .380 ammo. You could probably find thin grips to keep it even thinner and more concealable, since the butt is the problem, not the barrel. I mean, you shouldn't compare performance to 9mm with 4in barrel because those are thicker, you have to compare to say, p365. And if this is going to be easier for some people to make follow up shots, then you are absolutely right, this is the missing link.

    My first pistol purchase (and for off duty) was a Beretta 84 base or first model (no letter suffix) with smooth wood grips. My department required that off duty semiauto pistols be double action. The 84 met the requirement, but as James mentioned, I could carry it cocked and locked due to frame safety. I loved the 84 from the moment I first held it. If fit like the first girl I ever danced with in 8th grade, and she was Italian and beautiful like the 84. Sold it for some stupid 20-something reason. A few years ago I found a 84 base model manufactured within a year of my first one in perfect condition for great price. I will never let her go.

    Funny story about the 84. Long past when the department wailed about you having anything more powerful than a 380 as a backup, and pointedly expecting you to choose a 6-shot palm sized AMT or Jennings because they afeared you might feel a mite frisky and maybe would be able to actually WIN a fight……I verified that as long as it was a 380 then we could carry it. Sooooooo. Imagine the pissy purple they turned in wrath at how I got the best of them with a 13-shot 84. It was glorious and i outshot at 25 yds the blowhards with their P220’s. The 84 is worthy. Those magazines shown are quality and recommended. Loves me your channel, and enjoyed this video. I bought another decades later just for historical and sentimental value. Ir runs. My first day in Festung Europa during the Cold War I witnessed a polizei grease a deserving fuq-stick with a 380 using ball. The caliber works.

      Yep, .380 is perfectly capable of getting the job done in most civilian circumstances. The caliber elitists going on like ".45 ACP is a man's caliber" and other such trite bullshit are completely forgetting that a woman dropped a grizzly with a single-shot, .22 mag rifle in the 50s. If a guy isn't "turned off" after being shot by any caliber, then he's still a possible threat. Caliber helps, but it's shot placement that matters most.
      A guy can be shot a dozen times and not be stopped if he wasn't hit anywhere that kills or incapacitates him "right now". Some guy's "man gun" won't mean much if he can't use it effectively. After all, the human body can withstand some crazy things especially when doped up on substances. I look to pop the delusional bubble of those elitists by sharing the story of a Skokie PD officer (Illinois) shooting a guy 17 times with his .45, with the last three shots being the ones that ended the encounter because they were shots to the face. Gotta hit where it matters.

    Way back when I started my LE career (dispatch/corrections at the time) I bought a Beretta 84BB and carried it all the time. Time, youth, and bad trades went by and I was writing a novel wherein the main character carried a Beretta 84 (there was a good reason for the character's choice). I began to miss my old gun and after much hunting and bargaining, I found one for ridiculously cheap (I think I got it for under $250 including shipping and transfer fee). Shoots like a dream, carries so easily I find myself toting it pretty darn often.

The only time I have seen it fail to incapacitate someone was the guy who got hit in the forearm. After it went through his windshield….. Then still lodged in his door after going through his arm. I carry an LCP all the time in the summer when it’s too hot to dress around a gun. You just have to remember what it’s for. I’d never even consider a .380 as a duty gun. Or even an on duty backup. The blue finish on these is just gorgeous.
    The wood grips shine.
    And the groups you shot at 7 yards are wonderful.
    That , in a bad guys chest , will make him rethink his life decisions for sure.
    I really cannot overstate the quality of the blued finish on these guns.

    I have a pre- Cheetah marked model 84 b, from Italy. Mine has original wooden Beretta grips with the Trident medallion inbedded in the grips on one side, & the PB medallion on the other grip. It has a rounded trigger guard, vs the squared off ones of the later Cheetah's. The bluing on mine is flawless. Not sure what year mine was made in. I carry that pistol a lot ! I'm old now, expanding belly etc. So I always carry OWB. I would never get rid of mine, & it will eat any round I put in it. I keep some pretty HOT loads in it when it's on my belt. Bullet placement, bullet placement, bullet placement. Did i mention they are absolutely beautiful like Sophia Loren also ? I Put blaze orange "Neon Pop" fingernail polish on the front sight & man what a difference !

      I've got one like that too. Hurts my hand to shoot, even after I installed a new spring. By contrast, my M9 is VERY comfortable to shoot.

    I pulled a couple of guys away from a lynch mob, back in Iraq in 2003 carrying one of these, None of the crowd seemed to care that it was only a 380. As a concealed carry, defensive pistol it was superb!.. Your comments echo my own sentiments. Effective, reliable and easy to use. The Holy Trinity of all handguns. A little fat assed, but shoots straight!

    The 86 with the tilting barrel is also awesome for ladies that complain about racking the slide. I don't think it comes in double stack though.

    • @VMEMotor5
      @VMEMotor5 3 роки тому +2

      Correct, only a single stack available with the tip up barrel unfortunately. They have also gotten stupid expensive, especially when compared to the other Cheetah .380s.

    I have a Beretta Cheetah that I bought before CoVid and I have a Browning BDA 380 which was made in Italy by Beretta. I carried the Browning as my edc for a lot of years and was accused as eing an over achiever when I qualified with it for my annual HR218 permit. I use the Cheetah on the range and it is one of the most enjoyable shooters I've ever used. I have lost custody of it to my wife, she fell in love with it the first time I let her use it.

    Back in the day an acquaintance of mine, college class mate, carried one of the Browning BDA variants for off duty and sometimes U C. work.
    I need to mention the degree program was Criminal Justice so many current and future LEO's there.

    I've always wanted this gun. I carry old revolvers with standard pressure 38's a lot so 380 doesn't bother me at all. Then again, I'd feel safe with a 22 LR single action revolver. I don't get the people that have to have a polymer 9mm with with 17+1 and an RMR to feel safe walking to the mailbox.

    Got a 1991 made Mod 84fs. It's a comfortable gun to hold. A bit heavy, nicely accurate and reliable. Sights are fixed and tiny but can be gotten used to.

    I bought one new in 1976. found another at a gun shop about 10 years ago. They both shoot straight and have never had a jam. One next to bed, one on my hip.
