Unless his time carrying a 40 was in conjunction with a civilian law enforcement agency as an additional duty (Delta & SF augment USSS at times) there’s no need to hide it.

    I wasn't special forces in the army but I was an MP (military police) so having a pistol was primary/sidearm. Working patrol or law enforcement the pistol most of the time was my only weapon. These gentlemen definitely made very solid points and I agree with practically everything they said.

      I had a reserve MP Escort Guard detachment in the late 80s. My issued weapon was a 1911A1. As the unit’s primary mission would put us up close to the fight if not in the middle of it, I would have gotten my hands on a rifle. I used to take them to the nearby Army post periodically so they could ride shotgun with the regular MPs in order to maintain LE skills. One night, they responded to the post bank alarm. One of my Jr NCOs exited the sedan, drew his 1911 and chambered a round. Apparently that was a no-no, but we smoothed it over. I don’t think he did anything wrong, but Army was so set in their ways. BTW, the alarm was false, I was an 11B masquerading as an MP, and most of what I thought I knew about MP operations came from stories my dad, a former MP in Germany, had told me growing up.

      Yes but there are many times special forces are not carrying rifles. They are dressed in mufti and only carrying a pistol. They may be on a mission where their pistol must be used offensively to remove guards and entries to get to thr principal without beinf able to carry a rifle. For regular military, if you're using a pistol, things are really bad and you're out of rifle ammo.

    The advice to new shooters was so perfect. Something reliable, cheap, put more money into ammo and train. Later, get something else if you like. Makes a lot of sense. I got a G19 when they first became available in the US. Still have that first one. All the time and training on it made me stay with Glock, though I have bought other brands, some I have liked (namely, CZs) and some I never quite liked well enough (S&W, something about the grip, it always felt off to my hand). I think everyone needs to determine what works best for THEM. Nobody can decide that better than the individual themselves. These days, if you cannot find something you like, look harder. We live in a day of options with so many well made guns out there, AND in any size you like. I am an old fart and I lived long enough ago to experience fewer choices.

      Sort of having a bittersweet choice like that now. Got the M17, 320, whatever... but my 1911 Kimber was always built for my hand and eyes, and the orange dot on my target. Round count guys can start yelling at me now....and if they do, I have another 100 grains coming for them...

    • @Zoroff74
      @Zoroff74 3 місяці тому +1

      I agree. Although my handgun experience is'n't extensive, I've spent decades using knives and other tools, and for me they all have the same basic function in the way that it's your hands that know which tool fits you well. If it feels comfortable to use, then it will work good to use and you will want to use it. If you manage to find/improve a grip so that you don't feel it, it's just there as an extension of your arm, that's when you have perfection.
      It's not necessary to have great fit, with enough training one can manage anything, but unless one is going to be that disciplined and spend all that extra time, having a gun or other tool that is a joy to use is going to make progress so much faster.

Last week I was shooting with my Shield 9, as fast as I could hit a target at 7 yards and I got a jam and it didn't clear with the normal methods. I am in the same boat....How did you learn to acquire the dot quickly?
      I bought a APX-A1 that came with a dot (cheap one) and I could not get the hang of locating the dot quickly - always found my head bobbing and weaving to find it. - I liked the gun fine, but I sold it after just a month because Baretta was backordered on flat covers if you wanted to remove the dot. - Basically you were stuck with the cheap dot it shipped with.
      Does a higher-end dot make it easier to find/learn?

    • @oldtimehockey7324
      @oldtimehockey7324 3 місяці тому +2

      I had the same problem of learning how to find the dot. Purchased a surefire X400 with the green laser emitter. Mount the light / laser combo on the rail below your barrel. I had to buy a sig as my 19 did not have a rail. Make sure your red dot is sighted properly. Line up your laser and red dot. I chose a distance of 15 yards. Turn your laser on and practice your draw stroke. You will learn to walk the laser dot right into the middle of your red dot sight window during the draw stroke. Practice practice practice while dry firing. After awhile it becomes second nature. It’s an expensive setup but it really helped me become more proficient.

    What's fun about these kinds of interviews, is that I don't plan on buying another pistol b/c someone said it was "better". It just gives me some back ground information, so that when I'm shooting and dry firing during the week, I can reflect on what these guys said. I can integrate the information. Otherwise, I just have my own simple, limited experiences.

    My advise is when purchasing your handgun, go to a store that has several different brands to try. Try them until you find the one that feels like it's an extension of your hand. For me it was the Sig P220. It's a .45, but it was made in 9mm at one time. I have one of the scarce 9mm versions. Extra mag's are the issue for it, but it's a Sig, and it runs. I don't like striker fired guns, and don't own any, but that's just me.

    I spent 21 years in armed security as an FTO and range instructor. Carried everything from the M9, to Glocks, to HK USPs. My EDC is a p320 X Compact. For the simple reason that during a year of training with a tactical group, i fired nearly 7000 rounds through it, without a single firearm related malfunction. Yeah, i had a few primer issues due to ammo, but the gun itself never failed. Not once, in heat, rain, snow, -10* weather.....it just works and the trigger, is 10x better than a glock. So....18hrs a day, there is a 320 X compact on my hip.....it just works, and it works great.
