Not as often as you might think. Their range isn't as large as other instruments unless you get special made multi chamber ocarinas which are harder to play. Imagine what it would be like playing a clarinet with a mini clarinet stuck to its side. One piece of music you might have heard that I think uses it is the theme to the good the bad and the ugly.

Excellent talent and craftsmanship. What I loved the most is the flute he used at the end. It had obviously been broken and repaired several times. Yet it was chosen. Because of its beautiful tone. It symbolized a profound thought that broken on the outside doesn't matter. It's the music coming from within.

I know exactly what you are describing on a personal level.
When my first ocarina broke, I put it back together with glue & after that, it had a more rich sound from that point onward.

I’m an american who lives in Central Europe. I went to a middle age festival/quasi ren fair, and I was so embarrassed when I saw a table selling these. “The instrument from Zelda!” I proudly cried. The woman smiled and handed me a tiny booklet, outlining the history of the instrument. She learned me good 😉

    • @Birdsflight44
      @Birdsflight44 7 місяців тому +5

The universal simplicity of the instrument's fundamental qualities are what made them choose it. (Well, Link's Awakening probably helped, too, but they had options)
The staggered fingering system reflects the N64 controller itself- or at least, the face buttons, depending on how many notes the specific ocarina is able to play. (which depends on size and voicing qualities)
No chords or strumming, and you don't even need to change the angle or become vertical and linear visually like with a simple flute of the original Zelda.
Just a comfortable one-to-one, that didn't take elaborate animations on the N64, back when hands were a scant 12 polygons or so. (before they started getting spicy with Majora's Mask, haha)
IMO, there's really no shame in associating Ocarinas with Ocarina of Time, because the game doesn't portray any particular misgivings about the instrument, and the more you learn about the reason why its special to the game, the more you wind up learning about what makes the instrument itself so special.
It quite literally is an exceptional instrument for an adventurer- incredibly portable and compact, and used to communicate to others through the spread of music, just like they would be used in real history.
But if you do want more on the history of ocarinas IRL, I strongly suggest looking into how popular they were in Central America before European contact.
They were apparently absolutely everywhere, often as little pendant necklaces in some urban areas.
Just imagine literally everyone just... with an Ocarina.

as someone who plays one in part because of zelda, its funny trying to kinda shed that impression, because people will ask what it is and im like "Its an ocarina, a ceramic member of the flute family" and theyll stare blankly until i say "youre probably familiar with it's role in Zelda" and suddenly they get it lmao

Ocarina comes from Central America - a flute instrument made of clay.
The song was created by Simon & Garfunkel in North America.
This Ocarina was handcrafted by a South Korean master craftsman in Asia.
Truly a wonderful thing to have such a global background for this instrument.
His Ocarinas range from $100 - $350 USD. What a beautifully handcrafted small, portable, easy to learn instrument. Thank you! Khamsa Hamida!

I would love to see a channel completely dedicated to this man’s work, or at least dedicated to ocarina making in general.

I have played these for years and I want to make them someday! It's so nice to see what equipment I will need and the process in general. The only thing I have not figured out yet is how these artists create their molds.
