      As a non-native English speaker I misread your comment as 'lutheran' (and not 'luthier') and I wondered too long how lutheran christianity has anything to do with shamisens. :D But I learned a new word, luthier. A person who builds and repairs stringed instruments.

    What happens if the craftsman figures out a better method of doing a specific process? (by that I mean for example a particular manual technique, not using modern machines or products)
    If this new method still gives the same or even better or more consistent results, how do they know if they are allowed to adopt it and when is it more important to protect the traditional methods?

    竿にカエデ(ハードメイプル)使うと明るい音になったり
    マホガニー(センダン)使うと太く暖かい音になったりするのかな?

    Having the skin being glued wouldn't make it harder to maintain? It would innevitably get loose with time and the only way for you to alter the tension would be by applying more force through the bridge (maybe using thicker strings to maintain tune with higher tension). Also the pick-like object should probably wear the skin very fast. Changing the strings of a guitar is already so tedious, now imagine having to glue a new skin every few months. With that being said, the manufacturing is a form of art and should be respected as it is. The limitations of the instrument breeds creativity.

    • @letshuman8985
      @letshuman8985 Рік тому +1

      You are correct! Eventually, the skin will loosen and tear, which will require repair. Some shamisen players are also very picky about this and will get it replaced as soon as the sound becomes duller, even if there is no need for replacement. As for the pick, there is a an adhesive that is put into the body to protect it from its striking. In the Tsugaru style of shamisen, the playing style is aggressive, so the skin is a lot more durable. However, using these techniques on another style such as Nagauta (kabuki) style music, it will rupture the skin. Every style has its peculiar way of playing.
