I was once involved in a copyright case for a subtitle I did (English to Swedish) for a major motion picture. The motion picture studio (we can call them 1900s Vulpine) had used the sub on the DVD release, changed it without my permission, and not given me proper writing credit (all three breaches of copyright under Swedish law). They had earlier tried - after the work was done and the film had premiered in theaters - to force me to sign what in Sweden is an extremely illegal contract; signing away my intellectual property rights to the subtitle.
I had told them to fuck off in no uncertain terms, and that with this maneuver, they had just made sure that they had absolutely no right to use the sub on anything but the theatrical release.
This was at the same time as this particular company was one of the co-claimants in the case against The Pirate Bay, which was supposedly all about the sanctity of copyright. Yet they had violated my copyright in three instances, and tried to get me to agree to an illegal contract.
Naively, I thought it would be a slam dunk for me. It never lead to anything, partly because my union at the time were wimps *and* didn't really understand the case, but mostly because the studio had All The Money in the World (TM).
    TL;DR: Big companies bad.

Seeing as how you mentioned not being able to play even a snippet of the Ghostbusters theme to avoid a copyright strike, I think it's worth mentioning that Ray Parker Jr (or maybe his record label) was sued for copyright infringement by Huey Lewis because it's essentially a retread of I Want A New Drug. Lewis had originally been approached to do the theme song, and declined, so they just produced a song that sounded pretty much exactly like one of his songs. They settled out of court. So yeah...

I have a real fondness for Filmation's Ghostbusters. I remember having at least one two toys from it, I think of the two main guys (What were their names? Jake and Tracy? Or was Tracy the gorilla?). I remember loving Futura and her little flying scooter and how she always wore a headset for no real reason. I loved their Speed Buggy-ass talking car. I also loved Prime Evil, the cyber-Skeletor with his rogue's gallery of henchmen. I remember an episode where he's playing Go Fish with them and it's the funniest scene ever. He's like "Golden robot that looks like an even wimpier version of C-3PO. Do you have any twos?" He looks around nervous, gulps nervously, and finally croaks out, "G-G-Go f-f-f-fish!" He strikes back, insulted, "How dare you speak to me like that, you miserable worm!" and shocks his circuits something real bad. More villains flood the room, note that the Ghostbusters have been cited, and one of the goons at the table starts up like "I'll prepare the trap for them!" Prime Evil is enthusiastic, and says something like, "Excellent! But first... give me your twoooooos..."
I don't know why, but the comedic timing on it has always made me laugh. I had VHS tapes of it (All them cheap pieces of shit that played in EP/SLP mode), and I eventually even found both volumes of it on DVD, which, after encoding them to my computer I found was... a LOT of content for a show I thought disappeared after one season. I think there's, like, 80 episodes of it. Maybe more. And I don't mean 80 episodes like modern Cartoon Network or even old Garfield and Friends where each one runs somewhere between 6-12 minutes, but full 30 minute episodes, maybe only slightly less because, surprising no one, commercial breaks weren't as long back then as they are now. Not to mention the amount of reused animation. The whole transformation scene when they get suited up and get into the car sometimes got cut down, but I had to see that dude get kicked around in his boxers so goddamn much. I tried to watch through all of it and bailed somewhere in the first DVD set.
Still have a soft spot for it. More so than The Real Ghostbusters, but that might be because the only episodes I can remember of it are "Knock Knock" with the doomsday door, and a much later episode when it became "The Real Ghostbusters and Slimer" where Slimer takes in a black cat that fell off a witch's broom that unknowingly grants his wishes when he pets it. I remember that show looking way more anime than I remember upon revisiting it, and never really knowing what to make of Egon's hair. Like, what was with his hair. It got turned into this weird, curly pompadour thing that, don't get me wrong, was fresh as hell, but if you hold up a picture of movie Egon from either GB 1 or 2 next to cartoon Egon, there's no way you're going to say "Oh, yeah, that's the same character." Yet, back then, it made sense to me as a child. I still don't know why. Why was he blonde?

I didn't know any of the details about why it didn't match the movie and when the 'real' Ghostbusters one made it to my tv I didn't find it as interesting. As I recall it aggravated me that they had Slimer as a pet/little buddy. I was a weird kid. But it was nice hearing you talk about them a little. Or at least remind me that the show existed.

I remember both of those cartoons, and having similar confusions. I recall enjoying them both on their own merits. The Filmation one did feel like a throwback, but something in the ambience was really appealing.
This reminds me of a conversation I had on Twitter with a fairly successful and well-established indie creator, who was upset that a small indie production was "stealing the IP" of a CBS character by doing stories in comic book format. He got really upset when I was like, "Dude, that one rando can't _steal_ that IP. CBS will never not own it, both legally and in the public consciousness." He could not wrap his head around the power dynamics, and saw himself in role of CBS while also being a beleaguered underdog. It was... deeply surreal, but also beautifully illustrative of the American entrepreneurial mindset.

YTV was always weird with it's gets. Like I watched it and Teletoon growing up in the 2000s. For some reason, Teletoon (basically the Canadian Cartoon Network) got all of the CN shows except for Powerpuff Girls and Dexter's Lab, which aired on YTV. Like, I would have assumed these shows came bundled together, being on the same network and all.

I never knew there was a live action Ghostbusters that the Filmation cartoon was based on. that's a cool little tidbit. I definitely remember the cartoon and always thought their car and weird bone elevator was incredibly badass. still, it holds onto all those Hannah Barbara style cartoon techniques that its truly painful to watch. I like that the transformation sequence is the only part with effort put in since it could be used on every episode.

I was never too fond on the live action The Ghost Busters show, but I always really enjoyed its animated spinoff. I even have some of it on laserdisc.
However I have been ride or die about Ghostbusters and The Real Ghostbusters (at least until Q5 ruined it) since I was two years old. I still remember completely gearing up in my Ghostbusters toys and jumpsuit to go to my local radio station and celebrate the release of Ghostbusters 2.

I kind of love the Filmation series.
They had more varied weapons, the bad guys had more character (rather than the more generic one and done threats), it had charms that were its own and it should be appreciated on that level.

Ghostbusters was my first love - both of them. My introduction to Ghostbusters was the Filmation cartoon, but I was quickly converted over to "The Real Ghostbusters" by the lack of corresponding toys based on the other, and my desire for said toys. And even though I knew most everything in this video, I really enjoyed your analysis of it anyway. Both Ghostbusters hold a special place in my heart, even though the Filmation cartoon did indeed suck by comparison.

  • @IronPlant

This confused me as a kid too. The opening to the filmation Ghostbusters is the best part. It is never able to capture the villain magic of their own shows. And yeah, the boogeyman on rgb is really spooky. That episode could have easily been the script for a third movie.

The one that probably shouldn't have been adapted into a kids cartoon I most fondly remember (and was banned from watching on account of the cartoon giving me nightmares) being Attack of the Killer Tomatoes. I probably should watch some of the films it's based on some time, come to think of it.
