I loved that part, made my viewing of the movie feel like I made the right choice since I had just seen a tumblr thread about how people used to use nails in candles as a sort of timer.
The one thing that I didn't like about it upon seeing it when it came out was that it was less abject horror in the vein of an I Spit on Your Grave and more action comedy (damn misleading marketing), but I also totally missed the social commentary. This seems like it's worthy of a They Live level revival of interest based on the plot and themes. I need to watch it again.
I love the people under the stairs!! This is one I have to watch a few times a year. Tell me why the actual people under the stairs look like a local crust punk band.
It's real horror classic. One of the reasons it seems so timeless is that a lot of the plot elements are drawn from folk and fairy tales- the naive but plucky boy going into the monsters' house to steal gold is basically the story of Jack and the Beanstalk. Child-snatching is found in lots of folk tales- e.g. Rumpelstiltskin. The house with a dark and mysterious secret murder room is basically Bluebeard. In one scene Man even chops off a victim's hand and feeds it to his dog, which is an image found in some versions of the Bluebeard/ Robber Bridegroom folk tale type.
Great analogy! Just a suggestion, but maybe you should start making videos analyzing ohorror movies, and compare them to folk and fairytales I would totally subscribe!

The money room treasure trove wasn't stolen but was earned by charging their customers beyond their income for substandard housing. One doesn't get rich by hard labor. Oh yeah, I didn't know about Peele's appreciation of this film...but it makes so much sense when I think of Get Out & the parallels to this! Also, as an OG Twin Peaks fan, I wasn't about to miss a movie with Wendy & Everett in it.
So glad you covered this one. I saw it as a kid and it blew me away. Quickly became a favorite of mine to show to friends.
This was a blast to watch in the theater. A lot of howling and cheering. Good times...
