I did not expect the ZT to be slower down and back. I get that typically you aren’t mowing that tall of grass with a ZT, but the bush hog did a nice smooth job. In the end though it demonstrates they are meant for different application. Nice video!
Everyone likes to talk about how fast a Zero Turn can mow but in taller grass and bumpy terrain a brush hog is much quicker. You have to go slow with a ZT so it can process the grass. And a ZT, even with good suspension, will beat you up at high speeds. The tractor is much smoother and you can go wide open without being bounced around as much.
The open front on the rotary cutter will all ways work better on taller grass because it’s not getting mashed down with the front of the mower deck that is two different mowers for two different jobs
I have both, like you. I mow really thick dry grass, with the chute churning out cuttings up to 20ft away. Its only a 42" 16hp with 2x4 blades. But with my tractor with a 6ft deck with 2 sharp blades i can do grass 4ft high with a nice clean cut and a good row of clippings behind. The simple tricks are, as you would know. Keep the blades very sharp, and don't go too quick.
Very cool video. If we didn’t have so many hills I would use the brush hog / cab tractor more often. Can’t beat the speed of the zero turn on the hills though!
That kind of grass is hard to cut with a zero turn. Our neighbor's have a hay pasture full of that stuff and it's in our yard about as much as it us in their pasture lol. To cut our place which is around 4 acres for the yard part I have to keep the blades sharp on the zero turn and mow it no lower than a 3. If I don't it will leave stems all over the yard and it looks like crap. We have a lot of bermuda also so, when it cut it looks really great. I'm spraying our yard next year in the spring and again at the end of summer. Maybe a couple yrs of spraying will help get rid of that, bahaia. It's ok for the pasture but not on a yard.
Mid mount mowers are nothing but problems, but we do have a 6' finish mower now. And we borrowed a sickle bar for our hay. Great machine: ua-cam.com/video/HDmVxpDuHAM/v-deo.html
We now have a 6' finish mower. I will say the brush hog with sharp blades will probably do a good enough job for most people and prevent several implements that need maintenance!
I don't u derstand why people get on a zeroturn and think well shit if it can't mow as fast as it can go then I need something else. Like slow down a bit and it'll cut just about anything it'll take more time yea of course but even a brush hog will take more time to cut shit really really thick unless you have enough money to throw horsepower for days at them lol also there are pulleys you can buy to change the speed on your mower deck to make the blades turn faster so if you notice the zero turn was leaving a bunch of grass up tall well two way to stop that are slow down that's the easiest and probably the best way for most people my way is to change the drive pulley to a larger one to make it spin the blades faster you could also make the deck pulleys smaller but either way you'll have to find a belt to fit the deck since the new one will no longer fit.... But seriously just slow down a bit.... If it'll take 4 hours to mow by mowing it twice then it'll take that same time going a few mph slower to only cut it once. But now I'ma finish watching the video
In a world full of used commercial zero turns with 60" and 72" decks with 35+hp engines for less than $6k... and people still pay more than twice as much "for a warranty" 🤦♂️ All that money would waaaaay more than cover maintenance on a used eXmark X-series, or SCAG Cheetah/Turf Tiger... with much better performance, and far greater longevity.
So the purpose of the two mowers is different. The ruff or rotary mower is not ment for a finish mow. They are used to maintain areas that are allowed to grow for extended periods of time for what ever reason. The labors is ment to maintain a lawn which to maintain properly should be mowed ever 1.5-2” of growth max. Will it cut 2ft grass yes but if it’s not a good quality high end machine your going to destroy the mower

In the Florida heat, we appreciate that canopy on the zero turn more and more!
Very entertaining and informative video. Good to see you both 😊
Thanks for watching!
The ZT will be great along the fence lines. Especially for those with a loader on their tractor.
We're finding that blades are an issue with the zero turn and finish mower. The brush hog blades last longer.

Agree, it's a tough grass and dulls blades quick! Thanks for watching.
Would love to have seen a flail mower involved in that test
Would love to have one!
Personally I'd want to use the Zero-Turn to mow even if I had to mow more often to maintain a cleaner cut.
The tractor rides smoother over the bumpy pasture but the zero turn is more fun!
Hi Neighbor I get the same results with my bush hog and zero turn
We just got a finish mower...so more comparisons coming up. Thanks for watching.
Not sure if your tractor can accept one, but have you considered a bottom deck for your tractor?
Also what about a sickle
Mid mount mowers are nothing but problems, but we do have a 6' finish mower now. And we borrowed a sickle bar for our hay. Great machine: ua-cam.com/video/HDmVxpDuHAM/v-deo.html
Always wondered which was better. Thanks for putting this together. I'll stick with my hog. Glad I subscribed

good informative video thanks

19hp seems kinda low for a Zero Turn. I have two that are 28 and 30 hp. I would like to get a hog.
It's a diesel.
I thought the same, kubota I think have a 28hp 3 cylinder diesel
Maybe try a flail mower?
I've heard good things about Flails, but too many edges to sharpen for me. Got a new implement to run a comparison on in an upcoming video.
I have a flail and a bushhog I use depending on the conditions. I'll be looking for your new video.
The brush hog has an open front! Open the front of the zero turn
We were just running them stock for a comparison!
In Se texas...its Bah hay ya
The grass is too high it hits the mower and bends over in the blades go right over the top of it
That's why we ran the test.
How you mow tall grass then? Curious question not to debate
Just got our brush mower. 😊
You can get a lot done with a brush hog/rotary cutter.
@@PineyGroveHomestead ☺we just got one
@@jedritz-w6j Check this one out! ua-cam.com/video/2LtKLLMwSRE/v-deo.html
My BadBoy zero is not good for taller stuff
I think all ZTRs are going to struggle in tall grass.
I don't u derstand why people get on a zeroturn and think well shit if it can't mow as fast as it can go then I need something else. Just a comparison video...that's all. Not everyone has the knowledge you have about mowing.
In a world full of used commercial zero turns with 60" and 72" decks with 35+hp engines for less than $6k... and people still pay more than twice as much "for a warranty" 🤦♂️
All that money would waaaaay more than cover maintenance on a used eXmark X-series, or SCAG Cheetah/Turf Tiger... with much better performance, and far greater longevity.
All of our Kubotas were bought used.

Great points. The point of the video was to see if the zero turn could cut tall grass as quick or quicker than the brush hog. The answer is no.
its true
