I love the way this turned out! One of the most rewarding parts about being a patreon of yours is the interaction you give throughout the week on your discord. It was really cool to see you use a tip that one of us gave you in the build. Almost gives me the nostalgia of building terrain with my brothers back in that day. Thanks for another amazing build John. Keep up the great work!
That is an awesome project! I like your artistic eye. One thought about the caulking...I have accidentally used the non-paintable variety doing projects before, and that was a problem. I recommend using paintable caulk. Using a bit of stop fray on the fabric edges will help keep it from unravelling.
Hey John! This is a great example of modularity and it is very fun to craft! Love the general idea and you was a genius with the woodgrain on the columns... Well done! When you get on little details, well... You always nail it! Bravo!
I love the use of the Silicone adhesive with gravel/sand/tile grout for the ground material. This is a great way to handle large amounts of area that need to get covered.
I like using used sandpaper as a base ground texture, and then build up from there. I can mix and match scraps of differing sandpaper grit for smoother and more rocky/pebbly patches of ground.
Wow....now this was something else! Have you made a amphitheater yet, or a stage area, for plays or music? Would fit in nicely with this and maybe more merchant tents. Add some wagons and it will look more or less like Darkmoon Faire-if you have been there. I think if you add a small Exciter speaker(1"-2") like the ones Dayton makes, you could have music emitting from the stage. It works on XPS sheets(I tried last weekend, it's actually amazing), maybe on small XPS buildings as well? It should work to some degree on everything, but it does work best on XPS. Maybe add an Exciter to your arena, and have arena noises and crowd cheers from the arena. Thing is, the sound will come right from the arena, on the table, not somewhere from speakers; that makes it quit immersive.
Great thoughts here... I might have a few of them in my mind as well ;) The closes thing to my stage was part of my colosseum playlist... you'll find one in there.
With the pillars, one thing I would suggest is to swap the Q-Tip and sculpted top for some of the fabric pins that already have the ball top. The end result would be, largely, the same, but a lot less work and it tends to work better than the sculpting tool for going into foam. Also, where did you get the dove from? I keep working on something similar, I've wanted to have a set for a smaller festival situation, something partially based on the Gathers described in the Harper Hall books from the Pern series
great work as usual! tossing the table onto the market stall in the beginning intro was a baller move! how many takes did it take? Did you get it in one? awesome!
A merchant has been selling herbs and spices for decades... One could say he's a pretty seasoned salesman. Magnificent build to go with last weeks. Sorry I'm running late was in recovery for a ruptured distal bicep tendon surgery when you dropped last weeks video. Let's just say hurricane Ida and my age haven't been kind as of late. But, I'm back and can't wait for more my brother! .... Hell, think I'll circle back and leave a bad joke on last weeks as well🤘🏻
This is pretty amazing it looks like something that would be sold by wizkids it looks like a high quality mass produced product like the market place set but a large scale peice big tent peice great job :) freaking amazing iv been playing dnd for like around 27- 28years and my gaming room /miniature set & place props are like know store I hav ever been in . Something amazing like This would be a amazing peice in my collection of all ways growing amazing quest and memory's of so many fun adventures who ever u gift this peice to will really hav a amazing peice
This is so cool John. Now if you just make a few more of these you can have a faire to go to in your campaigns! Maybe you can find a mini of a juggler or a fire-breather! I know I know! The rest of my group are always telling me I get carried away! What can I say? I am an artist afterall! But this build is really great!
the nicest thing about these modular builds is how they allow pieces of the miniature have more use on the table than what the piece was originally part of. Example: if you want a merchant centre in a city, instead of one with a grassy/earthy base, you make one with stones! Another fun detail you can do is if the place was ruined/ransacked/besieged. You can replace the flags with tattered/burned/torn ones, or even remove them entirely. Fantastic work, as always :) Personally, I would make the decoration be optional in my set to make it easier to use in different scenarios, and also have as much space without clutter. Although, those set pieces do in fact bring a lot of life to the piece.
Another fantastic piece of artwork! Can see a mediaeval shopping bazaar coming up. Q: Do you research images to come up with a design for the build or just wing it?
Thank you Marcus. Research always helps to try and nail down a look or feel. I wanted to make sure I had the awning somewhat close with the fabric and shape.
I apologize if my words will look ridiculous. I don't know English well and I use a translator. I have been following your work for a long time. It's very inspiring. Thank you for that. I also try myself in this. once I ran into the same problem as you. A small part burst when I pierced it with a toothpick. For myself, I solved the problem so that there is no need to put pressure on the part when you insert a toothpick into it. It is better when you rotate a toothpick, something like a drill. In this case, the small part does not break.
Using the tea leaves in your ground cover because of the scent is inspired, dude. Exotic scents are archetypal marketplace sensations that will delight everyone. It seems like it would have added value for visually impaired players. What do you think of the idea of adding traces of powdered allspice or cassia to the tea leaves? Keeping the spices from overpowering the tea would take a delicate touch, but doesn't seem difficult.
If that silicon mix became too dry to work, I believe a very small amount of vinegar should thin it. As you can use vinegar to clean up silicon. I havent tried it, just a suggestion.
You've been on a roll these last few weeks. Well, the last year or so. Actually, you've been on a roll since I first started watching your stuff... So I guess this video was average, then?
interesting thought for the pillar that snapped. Put it together with a slight angle like it was hit by something big. Players ask about it in game, just say, "Oh that? Ever seen a drunk minotaur?".
When you say "silicone" I imagine you mean acrylic caulking :) If you are using acrylics you can mix a bit of water or isopropil to easier the application.
Thank you Jennifer :) It really becomes an art of love when working on these.... like adding the water to the merchants mug... not necessary but I just had to add it !
Great question…. I wanted a bit more strength in the pillar and I also wanted the diameter of the post sticking out of the top a bit larger than a toothpick. Thanks!
This is excellent! The quality of your build goes without saying, but I have to tell you I really like the concept of a single item market. On most wargames tables, the market is a series of single item tables scattered over a portion of the table. Not bad as far as it goes, but this all-in-one piece gives the busy feel of a market without tying up more space that could be used for gaming. Well done!
You've done it again! Fantastic! I love how you start small and implement previous builds into bigger ones. The creative journey is outstanding. Best crafting channel. Period.
