Doomsday was the product of a Kryptonian experiment to create a perfect being. They created a human infant, jettisoned it into a hostile environment, watched it die, then collected a DNA sample to create a new one. They did this over and over again, thousands of times, until they created a creature with no blood, no organs, and the ability to instantly evolve against any attack. He was completely unkillable, and Superman only defeated him by using a Mother Box to teleport him to the end of time.
Of course, in a later story, Doomsday returned, possessed by Braniac...
So, for the TL;DR crowd: Doomsday couldn't be killed, and Darkseid got his ass whooped.
Earlier Kryptonians were jerks, even when there were obviously better options than a death world.

As a biiiog fan of both characters, the thing that I feel is the most admirable here is that both of them feel respected by the writers. Darkseid in his personality and Doomsday in his power level. Add to that some glorious artwork and you've got yourselves a glorious comic book beatdown. What a pure classic.

I remember when this came out and I was in the store and I devoured all 3 HP Books before buying them. Standing there transfixed I think I barely breathed let alone moved for the entire 3 book read. Was an incredible time in Comic Book history.

Why would anyone underestimate Doomsday? He's the only one to have ever been able to take on Superman's full power, people seem to forget that Superman has said that he always held back his power, he never used his full strength on anyone except Doomsday, he's the only one who forced Superman to go all out, and that's the purpose of Doomsday as a character, it's why he's called Doomsday because he's the one who can truly bring doom to Superman's life, so it's no wonder Darkseid got beaten quite easily.
I love how they represent two types of villains. Darkseid is the end boss overlord, whose machinations run deep and is powerful but there are reasons too it. Doomsday is just an engine of destruction. In dnd terms I liken darkseid to a red dragon or archdevil, while doomsday is the Tarrasque

For those of you trying to claim that this wasn't TRUE Darkseid:
No. You're WRONG. I was there when this came out. I bought it the instant it hit the shelves. I was so deep into DC at this point, especially Superman, that I could recite to you from memory the ENTIRE running storyline of Superman, from the Man of Steel miniseries in 1986 all the way to the then present moment this book came out in early 1994. I ate, slept, and breathed comic books during the late 80s, through the 90s, and all the way to 2008, when my entire 5000+ book collection was stolen. And I'm telling you, as someone who knows this entire story by heart, this was NO avatar. It was intended to be THE Darkseid, on his own home turf, getting destroyed by the most physically formidable villain in comic book history. THAT'S what this was. It wasn't some cheap Darkseid imitation, and there was NO "true form" Darkseid at the time. DARKSEID himself got DESTROYED by Doomsday, and Doomsday did it quickly and easily. DC did this to show just how formidable Doomsday had become because, at this point in his career, Superman wasn't yet a match for Darkseid. Darkseid was the most powerful and dangerous villain in the DCU at the time, so they had Doomsday destroy him to show that NO ONE was beating Doomsday straight up with the hands. Sorry to burst your bubble.
That got recon recently so this is now just another Avatar of darkseid and this feat gets nerfed now

He literally mentioned that at that time there was no true form darkseid, but retcons happened and with the most recent one which they explicitly stated that The Darkseid shown is THE DARKSEID. This now means that every other darkseid before was in fact an Avatar. Hence why this feat is no longer as impressive.

I really like this moment, but it does always bring up little nitpicks I have of superheroes/villains. Like the omega beams are always hyped as the ultimate weapon. But superman has taken it and while it does hurt him, there have been times where it just knocks him out or he shakes it off not all too dissimilar from doomsday here. Iirc batman dodged them in the cartoon, was displaced in time by them in the comics. Then there's the excuse that he was playing with them or whatever, I can see that for batman, not so much for superman after all this time. So I find it funny when darkseid who is seemingly aware of Doomsday's power level is shocked that it survived an attack that superman has also survived.
I think Omega beams can be dialed in to suit his needs? Minimum to max?

For you born after the 90's see this wasn't an almighty abstract being like in the new 52/Rebirth. WW Hulk still held back the entire run. Stomping continents, creating hurricanes, discharging radiation beyond measure. WW Hulk allowed himself to be clapped to something simple like a satellite beam from Stark.
Could WWH tank Omega Beams in a crossover? Very possible. Read about Professor Hulk (lesser grade than WWH) vs. Vector. Survived being torn apart.
Doomsday doesn’t get stronger the madder either. He’s just extremely tough, even to rival Superman.
But at the end of the day, Superman has no finite strength. And Hulk (vía the Beyonder’s analysis) has no finite strength. And this expands to healing, durability, and other qualities.
BTW, don’t bring up WB Hulk vs. Zeus. Wasn’t a real fight, since Hulk was looking for Zeus anyway.

No, he wasn't. I was there. Darkseid was no less physically powerful then than he is now. The only difference is that now DC says that the essence of Darkseid resides in its own realm, and any Darkseid we see in the physical world is a manifestation of that essence, not the essence itself. This was intended to be Darkseid at FULL power.
