When we had no power, using electric appliances weren’t an option. We had a gas fireplace and could have used that even without wood but the costs of those few days created demand and those people had huge natural gas bills as a result. People who haven’t been camping without Coleman stoves or other fuel sourced appliance would have a problem trying to cook with an open fire.
As someone involved in emergency management and disaster preparedness for over 25 years I can say that the people who say "you'll eat it if you're starving" are underestimating the psychological effects. This is especially true when kids are in the mix. NEVER just buy a bucket and set it aside without knowing what it is like. When you are already stressed, physically and mentally, the comfort of a good meal cannot be underestimated. Normalacy in terms of the taste, texture, and flavor of food cannot be underestimated when considering the well being of kids. Sure, it may not be like Mom makes, but if it is camp food or restaurant quality, most kids are fine with it. Try other brands. I personally rely on Mountain House. I tested several brands before settling on them. They are reliable, taste great, have a diverse menu, and lots of mix and match options. They also have a set track record of how long their product lasts because they have been in the business of freeze dried food so long. You need to consider the number of calories it provides per serving (some, like Wise, basically assume you are on starvation rations amounts when figuring the days of food you get) and the diversity of meal types (as seen with the heavy on breakfast bucket you opened), and the amounts of other additives (some are downright scary on salt; extra salt is not a terrible thing in a disaster, but too much over an extended time...).
Well put. Few people actually know what 'survival food' really means. Even seriously off-grid, self-sufficient and wilderness folk usually try to make a semblance of 'meals' in the idea of meat and two veg variety. That is NOT 'survival food'.
@@Shorkshire Wait until you are starving, the wife and kids are starving, and the only thing you have to eat is something the kids and wife find disgusting. Even if they choke it down, now you are dealing with the resentment of them for you not knowing better.
Are all of them also loaded with soy I think, which I’m allergic to. I’d just to die. Please let me know if anyone knows of any that isn’t full of soy.
I would have definitely suggested trying a different brand. Mountain House and Peak are both pretty good to the point that I'll confess that I'll sometimes eat them when I'm feeling to lazy to make real food. Now Readywise on the on the other hand is only good for torturing prisoners of war.
Definitely a good idea to try it out. Especially if you wanna buy more, you'll know which ones you like and want to invest in. Water purification to go with your water storage is something to consider also.
You're right. We are on a well and although there are sometimes concerns with a well, in a SHTF scenario my generator will give us water indefinitely. We installed a water softener that (supposedly) doubles as a purification system. I don't know about all that but when we tested the water before the softener, the water wasn't suitable to drink. We didn't use it for our dogs. Now, with the system installed we had it tested by a different water company and they say it is definitely drinkable. Food for thought....... sorry , bad joke.
My parents had a lot of food storage when I was a kid. We would take some of it along with regular food for our camping trips so my folks could see what we kids would and wouldn't eat. They resold the stuff we didn't like, and restocked what we ate. It let my family get used to eating those foods, and kept the stored food from expiring.
Pudding probably needs more water, less for the Spaghetti. You'll need to play around with the combinations to get them how you like them. You can also prep honey instead of syrup for pancakes and general sweetener and your favorite spices so you can season the food how you like. The food will be pretty bland seasoned to make it a one size fits most kind of thing.
Addie is so much like Meredith, she makes the same facial expressions and everything... so cute! Also, I'm pretty sure the "brown mac-n-cheese stuff" is chili-mac 😊

I've been doing survival training for around 8 years, you need to learn about lots of things like cooking without power/mini stoves, emergency supplys and kits. Lot and lots to learn but it teaches you to be totally self sufficient in a disaster 👍
Being poor does the same thing. I've become a master of living without running water or electricity simply from bad times in my life. Now, when the power goes out, or the water shuts down, I'm like "Oh, this again. Meh."
@@Ranstone Power went out in our town (it happens a lot in SE Ohio), and I was hungry (and drunk), so I took my backpacking stove and made spaghetti and sauce, with my head lamp on (solar charged AA's). @nig a you need to know how to make safe water. And... it's cheap as all get out. Not what some promote. Iodine tabs, incredibly great water filters, and much more. But boil water for 2 minutes, safe. Takes longer to cook Ramen or any knoor product. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes, you are good
Alot of pancake mix ingredients have an indefinite shelf life so pancakes will always be a survival food, syrup also doesn't spoil but does crystallize honey also doesn't go bad and crystallized at a much slower rate. Idk why the bucket doesn't include syrup or honey if it's assumed that you have access to water and heat source because all you have to do is heat it up to uncrystallize it
VERY good idea. When that grid was down it hit us for 3 weeks. we was grilling and running our generator to save the freezers. we dressed really warm also just since we didn't have heat. wife had me install a chimney and wood stove after that just so if all else fails we are warmer next time.
Getting some menus for helping your stores is fine, but do not depend upon it alone. Many menus are meat short and have lots of sugars to kick up calorie counts. You also need to store canned meats, soups, noodle packs, and other shelf stable items to stretch them out. Ready Hour brand is OK, Mountain house is good but salt heavy due to intended use for hikers, Some of the others are not so good. Try some and decide what you like, but do not depend on a bunch of buckets to fill the need alone. The one thing this did teach you was the need for a stockpile of seasonings, and condiments. Many grilling spices, salt and pepper, powdered ketchup, and the like will do wonders for making the foods more edible (as you learned with the lack of syrup, having honey on hand would help)

It takes more than the buckets of food you need spices and other ingredients to make prepper food taste good. Syrup, Peanut butter, your favorite hot sauce, the list is endless for things that would make your bucket food better. The problem with going prepper is you got to go all in, it's all connected and a lifestyle.
Give me all the spaghetti and pudding, you babies. I was up on a mountain one time with altitude sickness and I ate spaghetti like that and it made me feel so much better.

I have this exact same meal kit! I have always wanted to try some of it out, but I only have the 2 weeks supply so it doesn't come with as much food and variety as you got. Mine only has soups, a bunch of rice, pancakes, stew, and oatmeal. I think I will go buy the bigger pack now, seeing how much more variety there is.
You should order some 4Patriots survival meals. They are very tasty and has more than 3 items per 3 month tote. I have many totes and have tried most of the food and would easily use it for daily meals.
Definitely want to see you eat more survival food this is not just entertaining but informational cuz your family is letting us know how good or not good it is it also be interesting to see you try different types of survival food and figure out who has the best type of food out of the survival food companies ;0)
this is a great example of why you need to prep with stuff you actually like. the packs like this are awesome for a quick start up for prepping, but not to rely on. Every time you and Mere go to the grocery store, start grabbing 5 extra cans of canned food, i.e. soup, fruit, pickles, etc. I would love to talk more on survival whenever you want. I've been doing more budget friendly survival prepping for ten years now.
Exactly. People start buying stuff based on what someone told them on a website with no thought as to what they're actually going to do with it. Getting a 50 lb bag of lentils is great...if you actually like lentils and know how to prepare them
Definitely interested in this, as I have the same product. Can very much be a lifesaver in an emergency situation. Apparently, there are super expensive storable food brands that taste much better, but for price per serving this stuff is pretty good.
Hell yeah I'd love to see your family eat the other survival foods. I'll be watching with great relish! Goo to the monster truck rally and cross it off your bucket list!
Flour, rice, pancake mix, etc, before you store it, put in the freezer for 4-5 days. This will kill weevils. Let it come up to room temp and sit a few days before sealing. As far as the foods you have, you may want to open all the cans, and put an equal amount of each food in each bucket so if you open only one bucket, you have variety. Mark on the bucket (with the dark color buckets, a silver Sharpie is good) how many packets of what foods is inside. This way you don't have to open all the buckets to have more balanced meals. This also gives the opportunity to grab one bucket, if you have to go, and have variety. MRE's are also good survival food, but the cost per meal is very high. I asked some soldiers, "What is the worst MRE, the one that soldiers try to trade off to others. Universal answer, "Pasta with vege sauce." So, I had one in my case of MRE's. Tried it, and I promise your kids have eaten far, far worse in their school cafeteria. I really did not think it was bad at all. MRE's are 2500-3000 calories per meal. You can really eat off one all day long.
yes water access/storage is number one. it is interesting to watch the different videos people put out for the mre/food storage. still think ya got to feed it to the kids etc like it was real food for a real taste test :)
Matt, why don't you try MRE's? Box A or box B are good choices. Ask some of the Black Rifle guys if they have any kicking around. Or you can order a case on Amazon.
There are likely a lot of peppers who watch your channels, so previewing foods might be good knowledge to pass on. Regarding the foods ... from my experience, they take experimentation. For those years when I was broke, and ate boxed Kraft macaroni and cheese ... too much water made it like soup ... just the right amount of water made it not good but edible. The spaghetti looked as though there was a bit too much water. Annie was the smart one, using the pudding as sweetness for the pancakes!
Lessons learned. Having the staples in the buckets, getting ancillary items to make the food better (spices, sugar, salt, jams/jellies, and maple syrup).
I just mentioned that in another comment. The veggie omelet? I heard they discontinued it from complaines. Not sure if that's true, but I hope it is. The only thing good in that MRE is the gum and the toilet paper.
Thanks for cooking some of this food and your honest review of it and especially the kids's thoughts lol. I have a couple of these buckets but haven't opened them.
There are quite a few other brands of long-term storage foods. Some are dehydrated and others are freeze dried. A few of the brands are Mountain House, Augusson Farms, and Thrive Life.
We did this exact thing last year; sample emergecny survival foods. We tried about half a dozen of them and the very best, across the board and ultra easy to prepare is Mountain House. Hard to imagine, this is the same product that has been on the shelves of Walmart for decades!
It’s almost like Matt finished putting together his new office desks and then walked into the kitchen to start filming this vid based on the same attire he’s wearing 😂😂😂

At the not abandoned big house on the hill, It would be incredible to have a field cannon or two as lawn decorations. If you got really ambitious they could be used for signaling down to the ranch , birthdays or for fireworks on the 4th of July & New Years Eve.
I have definitely always wanted to hear feedback on these emergency food pails and the quality of the food provided once it is used. And needless to say: the manufacturers have some serious work to do: at least as far as providing some decent condiments. Like maybe powdered syrup!!
This is a good test. You need to experience stuff like this to survive. Now you can include other things in your survival kit like spices and pancakes syrup and different things. Make what you have better
This is my first time back to the channel in a few years and lemme tell u...... Your kids have grown! I remember Lincoln having a kid voice. Like high pitched still
Cool to see the survival food tasting. I wish I had a freeze dryer that could preserve my own recipes - freeze dry and seal in mylar bags - food lasts for 25 years. Texture might still be funny but the taste would be better. But, hey, in a survival situation, something is better than nothing. Wear a helmut and a neck brace this weekend 😉
Now some of the Military MRE's are great. They are about 50/50. But when your hungry. Just about anything will do. Living in the mountains of West Virginia. I have two cases of Military Surplus MRE's. There have been weeks we have gone without electric and un-passable roads during the winter. So they come in handy for those really bad storms we get here.
The best survival food is to buy extra of what you normally eat and cycle it through. If you eat a lot of canned corn then buy a couple of cases of canned corn and use it as you normally would. When it’s on sale, buy more and stick it in the back and use the corn you bought previously. The same for other canned goods. Buy what you eat and never buy what you don’t. Your stress will be high enough to not have to deal with food you hate too…
Water Storage you say? With all that roof real estate, run your gutters to a rainwater cistern and filtration set up. I'm sure you could underground it for keeping it at underground temps, and keeping the views of and around the house clear. ('Nother Storage option for non-potable but useful water at the HQ as well with an additional Big-ole tank) [especially for fire truck useage]
See this is really informative. If you want to survive and enjoy your survival food you should try it. Maybe you could have a segment were you try different ration and survival food.

I hope that your sponsor Policy Safe appreciated that they got a full Demo Matt intro slot, Demo intros are awesome just because you put so much effort into it without it seeming so.
I'd definitely suggest everyone to try the survival gear! It's just a practical systems check.
Would you rely on a rifle you'd never shot? No? Exactly. Test, test, test.
Yes! try the other survival foods. Matt you are really stepping it up w/ the monster truck driving! Hope you are healthy coming out the other side! SICK BALLS!
Thanks for being the gunny pigs for trying out the foods! I know some other peppers have done some taste testing of brands. Try out Peak Refule, Pinnacle Foods, and Mountain House
I second the Mountain House! They have some really good options.
I've been testing some lately with my wife and daughter. I know if they will eat it then we should be good. Wish I could afford a camera to get their reactions 🤣 yesterday we tested out a buttermilk pancake 🥞 tin. It was actually really good I added a little vanilla extract and cooked them up in my daughters hello kitty waffle maker 😂
Just use your phone.
But being serious, in an apocalypse or emergency take that hello kitty waffle maker with you.
The hello kitty waffle maker is the peak of survival gear that you won't hear experts talking about. It's a trade secret
As a dad, I felt this comment lol.
It takes more than the buckets of food you need spices and other ingredients to make prepper food taste good. Syrup, Peanut butter, your favorite hot sauce, the list is endless for things that would make your bucket food better. The problem with going prepper is you got to go all in, it's all connected and a lifestyle.
I definitely want to see y'all try the rest of these. I have been wondering about buying some for my family.
Give me all the spaghetti and pudding, you babies. I was up on a mountain one time with altitude sickness and I ate spaghetti like that and it made me feel so much better.
Matt said it zombie apocalypse confirmed..... The look of the kids face when they tried to spaghetti was hilarious get some MREs and let them try those........ It'll be a quick turnaround on whether they want to be in the military or not....... They are awesome video thanks Matt it's awesome to see how much your family's grown
Id say most MRE's are better than whats in those buckets. Excluding spinach fettuccini though, thats nasty.

When Clint said “Mom’s Spaghetti”, who else involuntarily thought “Arms are heavy”?
I definitely did
He’s nervous, but on the surface he looks calm and ready
Do they even sell sweaters in Texas?
I thought “there’s vomit on his sweater already”
for me, an eminem song just started playing when he said that...
You are Definitely Blessed Brother, Stay safe and have fun doing it...GOD BLESS THE USA!
Yes! We need to see the other 5 buckets!
This episode is now in my top favorites. Also, that spaghetti looks like chef boyardee spaghetti, minus the meatballs.
I was thinking the same and most kids like the canned chef Boyardee. Spelling is wrong I 🤔 think.
Not sure if you have it in USA, but canned golden syrup (treacle) has an extraordinary shelf life as long as the can is not compromised.
Canned maple syrup lasts a crazy long time
Sweet!!!! Looks like I'm going to Evansville on Sat!!! See you there!
Getting a 50 lb bag of lentils is great...if you actually like lentils and know how to prepare them
This is what we do. We do order powered eggs, milk, butter (1year shelf life).
I need to know what's in the other buckets!!! This was great! 😂😂
thank you so much for making the sponsor sections funny and enjoyable aswell.
Linc's suspicious face after being denied syrup was hilarious. This is the funniest video I've seen in a while. Please open the others and try them
Definitely interested in this, as I have the same product.

Yes, we want to see you guys eat survival food! Better y’all than me as I have several buckets of Survival food also!😂
Flour, rice, pancake mix, etc, before you store it, put in the freezer for 4-5 days.
"The world's ending, we can do whatever we want!" -Mere
Addy's no eyes about trying more is awesome!
Going to start vlogging for memories for me and my wife. My son turns 3 next month. Want to have the memories forever bc. Thanks for the advice.

Have fun with the trucks. Just don't die. HAHAHA
Yes more survival food. So I know what to buy.🙂
Stay safe. Take care. Have fun. 😎
Mountain House is pretty good. It’s touted as a dehydrated camping food but you can buy it in buckets and be used as survival food.
Jenna is smart. Always become familiar with your gear and supplies.
dude i would love watching yall eat all the different food it actually looks better that backpacking food
That was interesting.. I’d like to see y’all eat more survival food 👋❤️✊
If you want a real good reaction, have the family try the omelet MRE. They'll be begging for that survival food.
I just mentioned that in another comment. The veggie omelet? I heard they discontinued it from complaines. Not sure if that's true, but I hope it is. The only thing good in that MRE is the gum and the toilet paper.
The chicken la king or what ever it was the worst for me.
I was leaning toward Mountain House myself. I've yet to try it, but everyone says it's praises.
It’s almost like Matt finished putting together his new office desks and then walked into the kitchen to start filming this vid based on the same attire he’s wearing 😂😂😂

I just have to say this man..... I am happy for your kids man....I wish I could do that for my family..your really cool man.....your videos keep me dreaming about better days...........thank you.😍
I am pretty sure the children and adults in Nigeria and Somalia and south Sudan would love that meal.... I love your show .. But maybe just a little shout out to the people struggling in some parts of the world. Keep up the good work . And remember your voice is heard around the world.
The kids reaction is priceless...love Annie's enthusiasm...hmmm brown mac and cheese...different...omg I wish I cld go watch the monster trucks...did stock cars wen I was young...
Hey 👋
You’ve won something 🏆
At the not abandoned big house on the hill, It would be incredible to have a field cannon or two as lawn decorations. If you got really ambitious they could be used for signaling down to the ranch , birthdays or for fireworks on the 4th of July & New Years Eve.
Yes definitely do want to see you guys open another bucket of survival food!
I have definitely always wanted to hear feedback on these emergency food pails and the quality of the food provided once it is used. And needless to say: the manufacturers have some serious work to do: at least as far as providing some decent condiments. Like maybe powdered syrup!!
YESS MORE SURVIVAL FOOD TESTING DO IT!!!!
I have a two year supply(6 months for a family of 4) of that exact food. Glad to see what some of it looks like.
YES! Open them all! I am ready to pull the trigger and order the same stuff for my Tsunami survival
A great video. The 25 year shelf stable food is only for survival. Not supposed to taste good at all but it will help you and your family survive.
See this is really informative. If you want to survive and enjoy your survival food you should try it. Maybe you could have a segment were you try different ration and survival food.
