Awww. I love this comment because my dad was a master craftsman who would take on anything new JUST to see and it always came out beautifully. Except electrical work 😂 then he’d call his best friend who was a master electrician. The two together, in person was a sH;t show but I digress…. He always gave superior praise when it was due.. ❤❤❤
This build was absolutely unreal! Your parents, nieces, nephews and entire family will enjoy it for years. You use meticulous and painstaking detail in each build. Thank you for sharing this with us.
I am Perry and I install swimming pools here in North Dakota your best option will be to drain the pool blowout all the pipes and run some antifreeze through them so they don’t freeze and crack draining the hot tub will allow you to clean it up come spring and to put some water new freshwater inside also I really enjoy watching your videos you have been giving me so many building ideas so far thanks keep doing what you are doing
It’s my first time watching one of your videos and boy was I impressed. For someone who’s never built a hot tub before that’s the most beautiful one I’ve ever seen! Wow! All the little touches, the mister, the lighting so many extras, you thought of everything. As an old person I might like the option of a gas water heater that I can turn on remotely so everything will be warm and cozy when I come out on a chilly night. Saying that, it’s perfect. Living in Southern California I pictured you going out there in the snow. I guess that’s not practical in your area. I didn’t know that the freezing temperatures would ruin the pipes.
I built a 2,000 gallon cement dunk pool and was thinking of using my potbelly stove to heat the water for use in the winter as a hot tub. Only problem it would have to constantly be heated. Maybe purchasing a jacuzzi heater for when not in use. Maybe I'm overthinking it. In the Midwest we get countless freeze thaw cycles. I have 1,1/2" pvc plumbing around foundation and below. To prevent cracked pvc from freezing I drain %90 of water then add antifreeze in the mix. When winter is over I flush everything out into Four, 5gallon containers for next time.
Thanks for watching! Yes the freezing will cause damage but it will be the spring thaw that will likely be a bigger problem. The ground shifts and tries to push everything around, will be interesting
I am blown away at the level of detail and intricacies of this build. And to make it up as you go along each day in your head…. Awesome. Most people would have likely quit two weeks in. Hats off and congrats to seeing it through. Many years of hot tub soaking to enjoy.
To think you thought you were over your head as you put it, and to see the end result is something to be damned proud of. You persevered and it certainly paid off! Incredible job!

Made it to the end. As for wintering it up, I think it may be easier to drain it fully and cover it with a tent or tarp just to make spring time restart less hassle of fishing out any dropped foliage. Although, if you keep a low fire going in the heater. Stretch a large-ish canopy or frame wall tent over it so you could have a middle of Canadian winter personal hot spring to relax in while there's a foot or more of snow on the ground. If you're thinking about doing that in particular, you might want to take up some of the mulch and dirt to line with landscape felt then cover with a good five inches of river gravel to be the dressing and drying off area. The heat from the water would warm the temporary shelter space. So that space may evolve into a family gathering in winter to cook on a grill, enjoy a warm soak while everyone else is hemmed up in their houses.
Lets be honest. We all wanted to make this or some of his builds in our lives at some point. But you know how much detail, hard work, passion, commitment and patience goes into it and you wave the idea away. This man just does it and takes joy in it. Massive respect. It looks insane and beautiful. Enjoy your hot spring with a nice cold beer.
I like that he pointed out that he had big concerns and the stress would get to him sometimes. It can be easy, as a viewer, to just assume the whole thing went smoothly and wasn't a big deal because we get to just see it from start to finish and not actually be involved with the logistics of it all.
Drew's parents are so lucky to have him turning their property not an absolute dream property! I don't really know how monetization works on youtube but I really hope Drew keeps bringing in enough to continue these awesome large builds!
Eh its gotta be a mixed bag for them. One side some cool stuff. And in all reality itd be even more content possibilities upgrading the house and property.
Hey Drew I'm a swimming pool contractor in Florida, as far as how to winterize your Homemade spa you definitely want to drain it. Unless you're going to heat it all winter because you did not waterproof the walls of the spa as you stated water will get behind them and for sure freeze and break the walls and seats and floor. There will also be some difficulties to overcome due to the exposed Pea gravel and voids in the rocks This will allow algae and bacteria to fester With no way to clean it. I know what you're thinking the chlorine will just kill it but that's not exactly true to keep levels within range for use there will be a gradient of sanitary water to water that is stagnant and filled with bacteria. this will cause you to have a constant battle with Staphylococcus cytoplasm and other various bacterial growths. My recommendation is every couple of weeks to bring the Spa to 50 parts per million chlorine to kill any bacteria before use skipping this step will result in hot tub rash hot tub lung and other infections. This project came out beautifully But it was definitely not built to code I don't expect this hot tub to last for more than five to 10 years😃
Thanks for your comment, our thoughts went in the same direction how to keep it clean. These 'beginner mistakes' can waste a lot of money and energy for the builder which is a pity. We are thinking of building a natural pool without use of chlorine etc but in winter time a bird will drown in it, a frog might die in it and rodents make use of it during the year. So easy clean or at least making it possible to clean it for health safety will be priority for us.
I live in FL and want to build a permanent above ground pool but probably need some engineer drawings as I want to do it legally. I'm near Jacksonville. Do you think any pool contractors would work with me lol or what steps would you recommend to get started?
@@4711Express I'm not sure why in this day and age there's such a fear of chlorine. chlorine has saved more lives than any other chemica.l It is what's made municipal tap water available and safe to drink for everyone in the United States, and it is the only reliable way to sanitize water for distribution
@@digi3218 first thing you need to do is get a site survey that will give you your setbacks and show where you're allowed to build. I see you said above ground pool why do you want to build your pool above ground? A freestanding pool made of concrete cost a lot more to build and to heat.

If you do this yourself. One tip I have from building water features over the past twenty years is buy extra underlayment. Cut pieces of it and place them on the pond liner and under the boulders to prevent puncturing the liner. Double them or triple the pieces if you need to but PROTECT the liner!! That is all. Jtone, He said it cost him 20 grand to build this. The retail price would be 5 times that to pay the labor crew plus materials, and leave room for profit, and very few if any would pay that much for one of these.
I really enjoyed watching the build and seeing the finished product. At night with the lights on and the fog/mist really looks cool. After reading through some comments from "professionals", about how difficult to clean and water behind the walls & freezing etc.. I would be kicking myself on not being able to plan far enough ahead to properly clean it or about water freezing behind the walls and it making everyone sick or being destroyed within a couple years with all the money & time that went into building it. I'd be wanting to keep it heated full time. Definately something to be proud of. Nice build.

Dude you are freakin nuts, I swear you outdo yourself on every video. I love this build so much. And I especially like the part where you were honest about feeling in over your head near the beginning, that's really encouraging
Wow!!! No words to how beautiful that is! I would drain and blow out the pipes over winter. I live in mid-Western Nebraska and I do leave my above ground pool up, full of water up to where the pump and skimmer attaches, and I have a fish pond that I leave full.... obviously for the live fish. Winters here can get pretty darn cold but I don't have stone and tile, but plastic or rubber liners and they will expand and contract with the water. My above ground pool liner lasts about 5 or so years leaving it up year round, and even longer for my Koi and Goldfish pond. For my fish pond, my husband build me a metal frame that I place over it, then cover it with netting and plastic over the winter, to keep leaves and debris out. I have a heater that only kicks on during freezing temps, and I run a couple of bubblers inside for the fish. Last year it got so cold it still froze the surface... but those fish survived just fine! My pool also gets covered with a pool cover, and a pool leaf net... both of those are for a pool much larger so that the edges drape over the sides, nearly to the ground! I found that with our winds, this keeps the darn things on all winter. Good luck with your channel and your builds.... you are amazing!
WOW!!! First time watching your channel. This is spectacular!!! Looks like lots of really hard work. I know your parents must be so proud. Good luck in all you do.
Awesome build, you killed it! Loved the video. As an old former contractor and avid Diy’er this was inspiring. Just wish I had the energy of youth still, but at 72 now, just don’t have it anymore. Well, that would be a beautiful gift to any parent have one of those in their yard. God bless you with a beautiful gift and talent. God bless you for doing that.
Others have commented on winterizing, so I will put in my two cents on what I have seen when I was a pool installer, back in the day. The second pool company that I worked for (40 years ago) did only one type of pool, monolithic concrete walls, with a vermiculite/ cement bottom, topped by a vinyl liner. It was a huge upgrade from my first pool company products, where we installed steel walls, fiberglass walls, (both still quite acceptable) plastic, and, believe it or not, pressure treated wooden walls...all inground, with a sand/ cement or vermiculite and cement bottom, with a vinyl liner. So. In a neighborhood where we were installing a pool, we came across a home that had a pretty expensive gunite pool in the backyard. The new homeowners had been unaware of the issues that their predecessors, the original homeowners, encountered when putting in a solid(gunite) concrete pool. Their property had a very high water table, (the excavators hit water after only a few scoops from rhe backhoe)and the new owners thought that the pool might crack if their expensive pool was left full of water over the winter. It does get cold here in South Jersey, at the Shore, but we do not have winters as severe as Canada, or our Northern States. So. Not knowing that they needed the weight of the water inside the pool to keep it in place, they emptied the pool. They subsequently discovered a few months into the winter, that the hydrostatic pressure exerted by the high water table had lifted the pool up out of the ground. Quite a bit, actually...and at an angle. I believe that it was a 20' by 40' pool. No bueno. So. Forewarned is forearmed. Cheers...
I'm designing a hot tub on a large riverboat and planning on wood and fiberglass/epoxy right now. Any tips on something like this? Weight is a big concern and it's "above ground". Unfortunately, my space is too unique to just by a manufactured tub.
Looks great! Winterization is going to be tricky if you can't keep it continually heated year round like a traditional hot tub. Your issue is going to be water that has seeped into crevices in the pea gravel and in between the pond liner and the concrete / rocks. If you can't get all the water out of those cavities / crevices it will break things when it expands / freezes. If you have to rebuild it, build in some drainage, even eliminating the pond liner if needed so that any water that does eventually get underneath the concrete has a place to drain away.
That outro was hilarious lol! Incredible job as always Drew! Not only with the construction work but the amount of time and detail it takes to record, edit and story tell the entire process takes immense skill. Can't wait to see what's next!
This is the type of dude that can do anything he puts his mind to and I have mad respect for that. Definitely a man’s man. Reminds me of my dad. Anything he would build he’d build the right way and to perfection in his own eyes. Nice job
Ive watched two or three of your videos and am continuously more and more impressed. Your build skills, editing , narrating… its all amazing. You’ve found your talent… keep it up!
The unique shape and contorus would be difficult to cover effectively, and the small amount of water isn't worth working hard to clean next year. Drain it, blow out the pipes and plug. The pumps and filter should be fine to overwinter in place, as long as they're empty of water. Avoid leaving a filter cartridge/element in the filter body all winter though; if reusable, store it dry and indoors, otherwise discard and replace next year. Get a float actuated submersible pump and a short hose and set it up in the lowest area of the bottom to keep it mostly clean and free of water until you're ready to clean and refill next year.
@@DrewBuildsStuff Another tip is to use some antifreeze liquids like you use in car radiators in Winter climate and fill in places where there could be risk of water being left. When mixed with any water in the system it makes sure to stay liquid down to minus 14-20 celsius I believe. It can be difficult to blow out/vaccume every single drop. At next season you run some water to the system go "clean" it before filling it up.
Ive been waiting for your next vid. the other day I was showing my dad your videos and telling him that hopefully your next would come out soon. and boy did you deliver.

Drew, I can’t even begin to express how impressed I am with this build. As a 49 year professional cabinetmaker who also loves to tackle new things, you sir knocked my socks off. Very well done!!!
Awww. I love this comment because my dad was a master craftsman who would take on anything new JUST to see and it always came out beautifully. Except electrical work 😂 then he’d call his best friend who was a master electrician. The two together, in person was a sH;t show but I digress…. He always gave superior praise when it was due.. ❤❤❤

yo friend, gotta tell you about this little thing called punctuation.
What's the point if you can't use it in the winter?
🤓
@@appl314 Was thinking the same thing. Winter is prime time for using hot tubs. Still gorgeous, though.
@@appl314sure you can use it in the winter but without a full cover and extra heaters, it’s not going to work in Canada
Same
I built a 2,000 gallon cement dunk pool and was thinking of using my potbelly stove to heat the water for use in the winter as a hot tub.
I wish I had a son like you! Great job, I’m sure your parents are delighted. 👍🏻💯💪❤️
Thanks for watching! Yes the freezing will cause damage but it will be the spring thaw that will likely be a bigger problem. The ground shifts and tries to push everything around, will be interesting

Doin Gods work, my friend.
You can also use this as pond with fish if you don't wanna use it anymore as a hot tub.
I am blown away at the level of detail and intricacies of this build. And to make it up as you go along each day in your head…. Awesome.
Most people would have likely quit two weeks in. Hats off and congrats to seeing it through. Many years of hot tub soaking to enjoy.
Shoulda put more geo fabric under the rocks as they could puncture the liner.

I love all the attention to detail, as it’s not only about the function, but also the aesthetic
My brother is a pool builder, so I really appreciate your attention to detail and the heart and soul you put into it. Great Job.
Lets be honest. We all wanted to make this or some of his builds in our lives at some point. But you know how much detail, hard work, passion, commitment and patience goes into it and you wave the idea away. This man just does it and takes joy in it. Massive respect. I like that he pointed out that he had big concerns and the stress would get to him sometimes. I nearly cancelled this build 3 days in a row when I first started digging. More stress than I like in a build.

Thank god somebody commented this.
A freestanding pool made of concrete cost a lot more to build and to heat.

the editing on this video is unreal. you make a difficult task look easy through how smooth the editing is between the individual steps of construction. a really well explained video.
If you do this yourself. One tip I have from building water features over the past twenty years is buy extra underlayment. Cut pieces of it and place them on the pond liner and under the boulders to prevent puncturing the liner. Double them or triple the pieces if you need to but PROTECT the liner!! That is all.
Great build!

Very unlikely he could build these with profit, UA-cam pays for the expenses and makes it worth doing this/these projects. In the end we all profit (he $, we content), but nobody would hire an amateur (I mean no disrespect) to build an overpriced hottub/pond in their backyard. I also doubt the longevity of this project. But it looks really really nice on UA-cam and gives inspiration.

Thanks for the tips! I’ll try it out once winter comes
@@DrewBuildsStuff Isn't winter the time of the year when you would want a hot tub the most?
@@anonb315not a wood fired, not super insulated hot tub. It would freeze and break apart.
@@jeanlou3 Yeah, that's a bummer. I like the idea, but it seems not so thought through.
