Suggest you put a rabbet on the box to hold the bottom panel more securely with more glue space for strength. Alternatively, you can put a dado in the box about 1/4" up from the bottom and put in the bottom panel while doing the glue up. Either can be done easily on a router table or a table saw.
Smart idea. They also had a matching panel that stays to the right of the blade. Not really wanting to persuade you, as you might be at a higher craftsman level. For me, an average garage-shop guy, it's way more precise than is needed for most of my projects. And I just didn't want to spend the time to build one from scratch with the same features.
That first "too big" box would make a cute hanging shelf. A couple of them would be a nice honeycomb effect!
