    Great job, very well made. A tip from a magician who uses these type of boxes for over forty years: Work the other way around. Show the box empty first, then let something appear. The more the better. Flags, sweets, anything flashy or colourfull. That is impossible, it was empty, so surprise-effect. That way nobody suspects the box and they all focus on the flags/sweets, you then just put the box away. If you vanish something they want to see the box, because they see it as a puzzle and the box must have something to do with it. Our audience is not stupid. If you just show an empty box , snap your fingers and fill it with sweets/flags they don't get the time to think and now they can see, feel and even eat whatever you produced. (make sure to produce only edible flags.).

      Gustav, I am already thinking of this design with a PK ring activation so there is no hole...also thinking a good card trick using it would be "Selected card appears inside formaly empty box"..lot of great potential uses for this wonderfull gadget! Thanks Ron!

      Thank you for your comment. I am happy I can share my joy of woodworking with other parts of the world. I agree the metric system is sinpler, but I live in the United States. I'm sure Google can convert the dimensions for you.

    • @RichWoods23
      @RichWoods23 Рік тому

      Google will give you an exact answer for conversions but that could lead to the boxes having awkward dimensions, where you have to round up or down correctly in each instance to get each box to fit inside the other. An easier way is to look at what materials you have at hand and scale from them. For example, if you only have 4mm and 8mm plywood then for every 1/8 inches given anywhere in the measurements, replace it with 4mm (so that 1/4 inch becomes 8mm, 2 inches becomes 6.4cm, etc, even though in the real world 2 inches = 5.08cm). If you have 3mm and 6mm plywood available, you'd use 1/8 inch to 3mm as your scale factor (2 inches becomes 4.8cm, etc).

    • @RonMulletWoodwork
      @RonMulletWoodwork  Рік тому +1

      Thank you for watching. The inside box thickness is slightly more than 1/8". What is important is to make the inside box just slightly smaller overall for a loose fit.

      @@RonMulletWoodwork not a problem. I'm glad you showed how it worked at the end. It reminded me of my favorite "magic" trick from when I was a kid: a disappearing coin box. You put a coin in a slot then close the box, which pushes (slides) the coin into a hidden compartment within the box. When you open it again, the coin isn't there. And to magically make it reappear, you have to turn the box around without your audience noticing, open the box from the other side and voila! The coin has reappeared!
      It was my favorite trick because I didn't have to do any sleight of hand movements. My fingers were (and still are) too short to get that to work. Anyway, your box is a lot better not only because of the quality but also because you can make larger things "disappear" besides just coins. This is definitely on my wish list of "to-do" items. I have to get more tools (especially a saw) before I'll be able to try making though. 🙂

    There’s an old principle in magic, that everything is there for a reason. (If you could perform the illusion without something, you would.)
    That’s the essence of the black paint. The black obscures the differences in grain for the inner and more-inner boxes. And going with matte finish ensures that quirks of light and reflection don’t give anything away.

    • @RonMulletWoodwork
