The TERRIBLE Ugly Dolls Film...

- According to UA-cam's search bar, this was highly demanded. Everyone knows the legacy of Toy Story and animating the world of toys, but what if someone wanted to copy that success and tell a message about how looks don't really matter? Sounds like a wonderful idea for a kids film. I wonder what could possibly go wrong if it's helmed by a corporation that's in it all for the money and not at all for the quality of the final outcome...

Lou sounds like a better protagonist.
Imagine being stuck in what is essentially a teacher or drill sergeant's roll, presumably for eternity, training generation after generation of fellow dolls and sending them off to on an adventure-with all the potential joy and risk involved- that you want to go on for yourself. Your job is essentially to make friends with these characters, prepare them for all the eventualities and damage they'll have to take and...just watch them go, sigh, and do it all again with the next batch, rarely if ever knowing how it will turn out for all of them.
The movie could have been about him struggling with this maddening cycle, trying to change his fate, with the climax being his either choosing to take the plunge for himself, or sacrifice his own desires so that other dolls will be as well-prepared as possible for whatever their kids will have to throw at them. It could have made a name for itself too, going against the typical Disney-Pixar formula of character getting everything they want when they sacrifice their duty to chase their dreams by showing that sometimes, that's not the most responsible decision you can make.

This is underrated! I would've watched that movie over the one we got. Nice Alternate Universe! ❤️👍👍👍✨
See, this is why I really respect the designs of Disney's "The Hunchback of Notre Dame".
They went to great lengths to make Quasimodo genuinely ugly without making him hard to look at, managing to balance right at the "ugly cute" mark, like a pug.
I've always respected fiction like Hunchback of Notre Dame and Phantom of the Opera because they both hard commit to the concept. Quasimodo and the Phantom are, well .... not attractive. They're "ugly" as the definition would say. Both having facial deformity. And in the case of HoND, is also a hunchback.
And yet, every adaptation of these books goes the lengths to show that ugliness is NOT the worst factor in play.
In Disney HoND, the concept is about "who is the monster and who is the man?" Where Frollo seems outwardly normal but he's a genocidal racist. And Quasimodo is ugly but is genuinely nice and kind. The ugliness/monster is actually meant to be the racist villain and NOT the deformed hero.
In Notre Dame de Paris, it again emphasized that Quasimodo is the genuinely good person despite the deformity. While Frollo loses his humanity due to his lust, and Phoebus is an immoral man whore who doesn't really care about women.
In Phantom, Christine tells Erik that his "haunted face holds no horror for me now. It's in your soul that the true distortion lies." Again, showcasing the message that it's about one's actions that define one as a monster and NOT how one is deformed. The Phantom was deformed and was treated with cruelty for his whole life. But instead of becoming a kind person like Quasimodo, the Phantom internalized such rejection and became a bad person himself. He only becomes redeemed upon learning he was selfish and choosing to let Christine have her freedom back. His love for Christine redeems him when he realizes that he's been selfish and if he cares about her, he needs to let her go and be free.
Both HoND and PotO portrayed the message well: physical deformity doesn't make one a monster. Only one's actions define who we are and not solely based upon appearances.
@@l.n.3372 it's actually an interesting paralell between the two stories. How did I not catch that earlier?
Quasimodo is not really ugly, he's still plesant to look at.
I actually thought that the hunchback guy was pretty ugly, soz. But he had his *moments* of cuteness. I think they embraced the ugly, but they went wrong when they didn't make the pretty lass fall for him, despite his ugly exterior. That's how the movie *should* have gone. Whatevs.
@@IllisiaAdamsActually, I think that's a part where the story shines, by showcasing how Quasimodo and Frollo both handled rejection. Quasimodo can't have Esmeralda, but he still chooses to protect her out of the goodness of his heart, whereas Frollo, upon being rejected, becomes cruel and vengeful towards her.
The entire point is to show how selfless Quasimodo is compared to Frollo, and having him save her in order to be rewarded with a hot girlfriend would take away a lot from that message.

Yeah, I grew up with Pitbull. I ignored the explicit parts to his music, like the time he made a song for Penguins of Madagascar. Would be better to just bring literal actors.

@@Maxwell_Twist So? Doesn't justify actually disfiguring what to them is another person, they're low-key one hair away from doing what he did and that's not a good look.
Realistically, Lou would have been super valuable. People love rare, unreleased toys. How does the portal work? Are they only given to kids? A collector would love him and he wouldn't get dirty or anything. That seems the ideal situation for him. Unless they only want to be with kids and nobody else, which is a missed opportunity with all these living toy movies. They always focus on kids ignoring nostalgic adults and collectors. It would be an interesting change to focus on a collector who really treasures them or an adult who's had them since they were young and still cares for them. Toy Story could have had it, but decided not to.

Toy Story kind of did that tho. The collector was the antagonist, but still
Bro, he's a malfunction in the works.
Glasses also aren't ugly??? They're just a thing I wear??? No one ever comments on them at all??? No one cares if you need to wear glasses???
In some countries glasses are considered a disadvantage, for example in Japan. As proof, you can see how in anime characters with glasses are often called "four-eyes". In fact, I don't see anything wrong with wearing glasses, it's just an auxiliary thing to see better. If a person humiliates or insults you because of your glasses, then this person has complexes.

I was part of the “fandom” for this movie back in 2018/19 and it was honestly the most fun I’d ever had being in an internet space(aside from some weird experiences). Regardless of the movie itself, the fans were super talented and I remember we also had a giant group chat dedicated to rewriting the movie to be more character-focused and have more depth to the story. Either way, the general consensus in fanart and stories was that Lou deserved better, and that the characters needed more serious moments. Still, I was a kid at the time(now teen) and I think the movie is perfectly fine for what it’s trying to be and who it’s target audience is. I saw it in theaters with my best friend and it was fun, simple and cute. I’m still trying to collect the plushies for the movie.
Ya know what I want? A kids movie with the message of “Be yourself” and “Out imperfections make us beautiful” that ACTUALLY conveys its message well and ACTUALLY has good characters. It’s almost like that’s what we should be getting in the first place…
If your looking for this type of movie I advise and urge you to watch its s7ch a beautiful day its honestly in my top 5 films of all time and 100 percent rotten tomatoes so you can watch that
THIS, DOES.
Animated movies that care more about the casting than the actual substance *really* need to die. We don't care about Pitbull, we don't care about Kelly Clarkson, we don't care about Gabriel Iglesias. We don't care how star-studded the movie is. Just make the movie itself good.
The problem is that some people do, and they only see the movie because it has some famous actor that they like.
And to put the cherry on top, all of this is lost as soon as you export the movie internationally where it has to be redubbed by the locals into their language. So... yeah. Didn't think that one all the way through huh movie studios?
I dont really mind the celeb voice actors as long as the movies are good......
Part of that is to help entice producers to bankroll the film in the first place. No one wants to invest money in a film that doesnt sound like itll sell.

When I was in elementary school, we were assigned to make our own ugly doll, to learn sewing or something. I actually still have it, and looking at it now, I'm not sure what ugly parts were intentional and what were just bad sewing. It has lopsided ears, a big crooked nose, funky looking eyes, and a very crude mouth with no teeth, which was not intentioned to be ugly, I don't think. All in all, it looks more like a child's bad attempt at sewing than a purposefully ugly doll. I named her Augusta

Well, the truth is, no one has to tell you to be yourself. You are _always_ yourself. When you are in denial and dishonest with yourself, you are still exactly the person you are meant to be in that moment: a person in need of introspection, but still authentic. Even that dishonesty is part of who you are. If you build your identity on lies and omissions, you will eventually become the facade you wear; you won’t know the difference between the mask and your real face. this movie honestly had potential. if they just made the dolls a bit more ugly, and made Lou more manipulative or controlling, the story could show the message better. Maybe Mandy could’ve had something like a big scar, or a discolored spot on her face, which she would cover up with marker or something, and maybe Lou would kick out anyone who didn’t fit his perception of perfect, including humanoid dolls that have literally nothing wrong with them, but maybe he doesn’t like their hairstyle or something. Maybe the ugly dolls could fight against this, and create their own line of purposefully “imperfect” dolls. I don’t know, I just think they had a lot to work with, but didn’t do anything with it.
I just realized that Ox's name is supposed to look like O_X which is his face.

Came not come
On top of the ugly dolls not actually being ugly by the standards of toys, no one acknowledges that the "Perfect Dolls" and the "Ugly Dolls" are different types of dolls!
The ugly dolls are obviously stuffed-animal plush toys, while the perfect dolls are more like your little girl's dollhouse toys.
And if I could choose between having a doll like one of the uglies or one of the perfects, I would pick the uglies. I like plushes, and as plushes, the uglies have adorable designs.
Now that it was pointed out... I am really curious about Lou, OX and Uglyville backstory. I have so many questions. Have Lou forgotten about all good time he went through with OX? What events changed Lou? Have OX said something at the wrong time? How was Uglyville even created? Did OX built Uglyville himself or was Lou or some other Uglydoll involved? If the second, is it destroyed? Have any doll in Perfection told Lou about his real purpose?

4:17 I'm not Christian but I come from a very Christian household and was practically raised in church, doesn't the bible talk about loving yourself? This is straight from the bible itself: "I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well." The bible literally talks about how God made you and he made you perfect so don't worry about your flaws, HE IS LITERALLY TELLING YOU TO LOVE YOURSELF.
I swear people like this have never even looked at a bible.
i am a christian, actually the bible never says God made you perfect. It's actually quite the opposite, he made you wonderful, but you still have flaws and imperfections that Jesus died for you to FIX. the bible preaches improvement and not condemning yourself if you make a mistake. Not perfection.
Though if we are talking about physical imperfections, yes, the bible does say to try and accept those. You can't really do much to change that,

The fact that the Uglydolls themselves aren't ugly at all really goes against the message. Like the original Troll dolls were ugly. Even the new ones have more interesting designs. These dolls are "ugly" in the most superficial way of course to appeal to a broader consumer base. I don't want to be the "Back in my day" guy but in the late 20th century when toys were branded as ugly they meant it. Madballs, Garbage Pail Kids, and Meanies were all proper ugly.

@@moonlightwinter1072 Also they don't have to be creepy to be ugly, ugly and creepy are two different things. They could make them more complicated and make the ones that are based off of real or mythical creatures a little more realistic, give all of them less chibi proportions, add some imperfections like asymmetry or really yellow teeth, throw in some scragglyness, make some of them either strange grayish brownish or greenish shades etc, or give them complimentary color palettes since complimentary colors can look bad together. Also to facilitate ugly color palettes, instead of solid colors some of them should have markings that clash with their base color especially since a lot of them appear to be animals. Also for shapes of the abstract ones they should look at gourds. Some gourds are really ugly. If a couple of the dolls were literally multicolored gourds with faces and legs that could be ugly.
stereotypical girl bullies:
the Leader: leader of the squad, the meanest.
the Normal: just a normal bully, sometimes hates the stupid.
the Stupid: an idiot, but still mean. Sometimes hates the Normal
the Good: not mean, but somehow still in the group.
the meanest usually screams at how the other 2 are stupid and they agree
then the normal one screams at how the stupid is so useless then proceeds to still be togheter
The stupid repeats everything the leader says, and the normal one has a short anger sense
The good then proceeds to say that what they are doing is bad and ends up joining the main cast

Fr tho, as a massive fan of the film, lou and Nolan are genuinely more interesting then the protagonists.
Huh, "flawless built perfection, not for shelf" They actually foreshadowed. Honestly though, with the idea of Lou being a prototype I'm not surprised the man went bat sh*t. Imagine doing the same thing, over and over, doll after doll. Hell if he was forced to teach the 'perfection' lesson over and over it kinda makes sense him coming to believe it. He doesn't give two nuts about compasion cause it looks like he hasn't really been given any by the factory overlords I guess and his motivation actually made sense. The funniest thing about this movie is that Lou has gained a surprisingly large fanbase. Seriously, there's a sea of anime-esque, pretty good fanart of him online.
Lou was clearly the ugliest doll in the movie.
I remember trying to watch this film, getting 30 seconds into the first bit, and immediately leaving because it was overstimulating in the weirdest way. It made me uncomfortable and I felt like I urgently needed to shut it off.
Yep ugly dolls:
The movie that’s 99% song and 1% gibberish cat

i feel like this is just ruined potential. its such a cute style and this could have been an adorable kids movie if they executed their messages properly. and, of course, if the dolls were actually ugly instead of just being odd shapes but yknow.. better story writing is a start
Ya in my opinion I kinda like the movie but I respect everybody's opinion
well its actually based on a plushie line, so these character designs existed before hand. It's like trolls and bringing back an old product to resell
wrong how bout you buy the original uglydolls
Well there's the Garbage Pail Kids and they're way uglier.
So I suppose the "ugliness" in the ugly dolls is more abstract and about the abnormalities of their bodies, like missing an eye or having weirdly placed teeth.
But y'know, if they were actually ugly, moms with their 3 years old wouldn't go WATCH It.

Exactly! Kids love colors and the designs (despite being so boring) look more cute then ugly.

I actually felt bad for Lou to an extent. He’s not able to leave the world the same as the others, yet they treat them like a criminal. He does do some bad things, but if he’s unable to leave EVER, just like the other ugly dolls, and they are supposed to be kind and understanding- they shouldn’t of left him to get abused.
I don't know why they made him wanting perfection for the dolls was considered evil. I don't know about you, but when I buy a plushy or stuffed animal I look for the best one. The one with the fewest flaws because those last the longest. That's especially important for toys for children. Kids can be rough with their toys. You want ones with good stitching so they last.
Lou was disrespected lol.
Lol
yeah. because he was trapped in the world for so long and felt like he couldn't love anyone since they'd eventually leave him for the real world, he took the alternative to loving himself instead and grew a massive ego out of his insecurities. the one scene where he begs for forgiveness and he gets death threats from the other dolls is just upsetting :(
@@ori-hy2jn I haven’t watched this movie at all but it sounds kinda fucked 💀
to be honest, the models, textures and animation was gorgeous, it's just the story that's so bland and generic, Lou's character actually had some potential and they just threw it all away, and his songs kinda slaps... 😳
The weirdest thing about this movie is that there was already ugly dolls media out there and this movie completely ignores it. There were these ugly guides to general things in life that had this fun surreal, cynical edge to them. If this movie kept the characters personalities the same as the books and kept the general tone of them, it could’ve been really good.

I *completely* forgot about the film’s existence
Same. It’s so forgettable. People could literally make a video about how the film industry is pumping out more forgettable movies that are only made for the sake of money and not for storytelling. The kind of movies people use to distract their children because they don’t want to deal with them. It promotes no long term thinking.

*Holds Neuralizer from MIB Hey kid, look here.
I just realized why Mandy wears glasses and how she got them!
Probably from a former Perfect doll who got recycled who probably hid somewhere and did diagnoses until they were caught by Lou!
I was thinking maybe the lesson could be "its okay to be yourself, just remember there's always room to grow" or something like that, like moxy could teach that its okay to be a bit messy and weird while lou can teach to improve or bring the best out of yourself like being pretty and beautiful. I don't know but eh.

@@ProGremlinPlayer there was a live-action movie called "tall girl" about a girl who was like 6 feet tall and was made fun of for it, but the weird thing about that is how it acts as if girls who are slightly taller than average are the most made-fun-of group of people, when there are people with much more uncommon features that tend to be mocked

Unpopular opinion but I actually think the movie was good.If it werent for Lou and the spy girls thought,I'd say its just a generic kids movie. But it definitely wasnt terrible.I feel like yall are giving this movie crap for not-that-great reasons.Thought the only problem I had with it,is when Lou sings about how ugly everyone around him is.The dolls arent really ugly.Ok the boy with the green streak and heterochromia wasnt ugly, but just very differrent from them and he had a reason, but they should have made equally different dolls for the others he roasted.Or Lou just wanted someone to bully. And also more of Lou in the end.

@Wylie Farquhar also I don't know what an actual prediction would be, but since we got a Goku, if we get a Vegeta I'd want Majjin, and for the final character maybe Raditz. Then you'd have two DBS characters, two DBZ characters and one who was in both.
And the smash bros music
what hurts me the most is that the characters have so much more potential than this, yet it gets completely ignored. it gets to the point where I actually like the characters and it could have turned into something a whole lot better but it just. turns a blind eye
The fact they felt a missing tooth was what they could use to justify everything feels incredibly disrespectful considering 'The Present' by Jacob Frey did this exact same concept better in 4 minutes.
It legit breaks my heart to see these Ugly Dolls’ characters and personalities get thrown away for some kids’ movie banter that no one gives a shit about. When I was a kid, I was obsessed with Ugly Dolls, and my parents gave me a booklet full of Ugly Dolls lore and each Ugly Doll’s personality:
- Babo (the blue stout doll) loves to bake, and he especially loves to bake cookies because apparently he’s a low budget/chibi version of Sesame Street’s Cookie Monster. Basically, he’s a little cookie gremlin and I love him.
- Wage (the tall bear-like doll with a blue loincloth) is a hard worker, and dreams of having the right job that suits him. He also has a little brother aptly titled ‘Minimum Wage.’
- Ox (the green rabbit-like doll) and Wedgehead (originally deep blue in color) were partners in crime, and their best trick was ‘turning your stuff into their stuff.’
- Tray (the pink doll with three cyan eyes) is very intelligent (the movie gave her glasses to emphasize this, which is kind of offensive coming from a person who wears glasses to see,) but she can get very confused at times.
- Ice-Bat turns everything he touches into ice, but he’s super chill to hang around with, and all he wants to do is to warm your heart.
- Moxy was originally a short light green rabbit-like doll (similar in appearance to Ox) who was full of energy and moxie (get it?) and had the energy to win a fucking _marathon._ Godspeed, Moxy.
There are more, but I’m too tired to list them all.
I headcannon wage as a trans girl lol-
You had a similar experience to mine. I really, really, really wish they used these ideas instead. They were so fun and interesting, not this bland, hollow, garbage can of a film.
Yeah, the dolls were so wholesome and cute. Sad to see them be sold out but I guess I hope the original creators got good money for selling the movie rights.
i had a few ugly dolls and my favorite was Wage
on his little tag that describes his personality, it says that he works at a grocery store without actually being hired and none of the staff realize he works there and he doesn’t get paid, he just likes helping people :)
and fun lil things like that would’ve made the ugly dolls suit a much different kind of story
also i dunno if this is a very remembered thing, but there were ugly doll comics and i loved them so dearly, they were like cute lil episodic slice of life stories and that sorta vibe would’ve worked so much better
Why are glasses considered ugly?! I love how I look with glasses, and wouldn't consider them ugly. Another thing, to make these dolls ugly, they should have shown their stitches, places where the fur has worn away, have tears where the stuffing is visible, etc. Like you don't have to make them to gross but like at least make them kinda ugly.
Edit: Backstory for the antagonist. He was a prototype that met ox, and they became friends. Then he learns that he and his friend are going to be separated, one to uglyville while to other one to perfection whatever. Antagonist became hateful because he was always compared to people who were always going to be more perfect cause he's a prototype. Boom.
I think it might have a bit to do with how glasses was considerd ugly back in the 80s. Kinda intressting how it is now that glasses are used in designs.
Glasses are typically seen as a fashion statement these days. Wearing glasses can make you look "intelligent or rich". Seems a bit tone deaf to think that's an "ugly" trait.
Ye like how freckles are freaking tattood on ppls face when older gen were being literally bullied for it
Fr, I think I look prettier with glasses
@@yomiyuarts same!
I think it's kinda ironic that the "perfect" dolls look so ugly compared to the "ugly" dolls.
The ugly dolls could've been way better if they had less saturated colors and more actual flaws, it's such wasted potential for a creative concept
I wouldve made them more humanoid, give one a big nose, make one have patches of another colour to emulate vitiligo, hetercromia, maybe a cleft palate as you said, acne, some POC kids feel like their natural hair is ugly, big stomachs, double chins, eczema, prosthetic limbs, bigger body types, skinny body types, crooked teeth, stretch marks, rosacea, burn marks or deformities, disabilitys, things that are actually thought of as ugly or are a source of insecurity in real life.
I'm thinking way to much about a mediocre film but it would've made more sense that in uglyville ugly was something good but now they were being treated different, you could even add more creative trials to pass which would be harder for the disabled dolls and further push Lous point of perfection.
So...basically Mandy is scared of showing anybody that she has glasses.....
Where did she get those prescriptions? How was she diagnosed....?
Why is there even a shop that sells glasses if they are considered ‘imperfect’?
