Is it a problem that I like this movie? I was 10 when this released, and me and my mom would watch it in our apartment almost every day. she would always tell me that I'm "Her home." so I had tons of memories from this movie.
Someone in the Internet saying you shouldn't like a harmless movie? Dude, as long as it's not harming anyone you do you, I also love this movie and have tons of memories about it, many others prolly do too
Not at all. It's one of the best movies out there. I remember watching it over and over again as a kid and never getting tired of it. It's truly a masterpiece.
Fun fact: in the book this movie is based on, The True Meaning of Smekday, Oh's earth name is JLo, which is probably why they chose Jennifer Lopez to be part of the film cast. The book is actually a surprisingly good read with plenty of differences to the movie, explanations for some of the boov lore topics the movie leaves out, and lots of cool illustratons. My favorite details are the boov learning English by watching TV and listening to the radio hence their weird names and broken sentence structure, and cats adoring the boov because they smell like fish.
Finally someone else who read the book! I hated this movie simply because I had just read the book the year prior to movie release and the things they left out pissed me off so much 😭

From what I could tell, he didn't hate on it. He simply called it a masterpiece and displayed a clip from the movie explaining why(my humor is probably broken).
Well, boob I think can also mean an unintelligible person. We also have birds called boobies as well. Then there's the definition thrown in our face which allows a woman to nourish their infants.
as it was an important part of my childhood, i feel compelled to mention that THE BOOK THIS MOVIE WAS BASED OFF OF IS ACTUALLY A REALLY BOOK!! the plot is the same on the base level but theres a LOT more that happens and much more complex things going on. and the urinal scene IS actually there lmao. but J.Lo (thats Oh’s actual name) just comes out of the bathroom and says that he liked the complimentary blue mints they left in there also also. i have no fucking idea why they called the car *slushie-us*. in the book its slushes (bc when J.Lo repairs it he adds a slushie machine)
The tragedy of Home was that the book, 'The True Meaning of Smeckday' was dark with plenty of black comedy, lots of insightfulness on a psychological level, and genuinely terrifying moments. I loved the movie as a kid and decided to read the book and was NOT prepared for the dark emotional rollercoaster it was. It was a great book, but nothing like the light-hearted movie.
Sounds to me like your standard Disnification of old grimdark fairy tales. Not saying that's a bad thing, but man, I can't think of Pinocchio the same way again.
I read half of the book for English class, and you're right. The book was amazing, it gaves us real backstory as to how all this all happened, I honestly forgot the title but I actually like this movie too.
It's really nice to see that someone else liked the movie. I loved this film and watched it twice so I naturally got sad when I saw people online say that it sucks 😭. The creator of this video is mostly right about people not really talking about it, but I noticed people only ever talk about it just to say how bad it is 😭😭
My 7th-grade math teacher referenced Home because one of the characters in a math problem was named "Gratuity Tucci." She said, "Oh, she probably has a little alien friend!" ...I think I was the only one who got the reference.
ha, wierd story my University professor also did a similar thing and referenced home talking about a little alien but only additionally my brother caught on xD
My wife and daughter reference "what is the purpose of your face" a lot. I was incredibly disappointed to find out it's from this movie (for clarification my wife was a single mother when I met her, there was back history I wasn't present for)
im 10 minutes in and ive only just realised the borders of the screen are elongated kyle and now i cant stop laughing, i stg that only just appeared now but youtube wants me to believe that its been here this whole time
Now, Home is…weird. We all know that. It’s the kind of movie you would say “hey, I kinda maybe enjoyed that to an extent”. And besides, this movie has Captain Smek, what more could you want?
@@AJotasticGamer They literally said they were a kid. They weren't living under a rock, they probably just didn't see the hate because they didn't look at reviews or talk with people about the movie other than other kids
Okay just saying, the book is absolutely wild. It has 5 pages of nothing but "meow", is written at Tip's extended essay for a time capsule competition, contains drawings she made, and they defeat the Gorg by invoking anaphylaxis on their giant gorg flesh hive ship by cloning thousands of cats.
In September of 2019, my family was leaving the annual show. By this point my dad was living in the city with his new girlfriend and I didn’t want to leave him. I was tearing up and my dad said that we would see eachother again soon. That was the last time I saw him in 3-4 years. We said goodbye and I got into my mum’s car and I turned on the small tv in the car and I watched F*CKING HOME. SO NOW THAT MOVIE IS ASSOCIATED WITH A TRAUMATIC EVENT IN MY LIFE
Not just this but it's like, intergalactic. And everyone has access to this. Did they also have like REPLY ALL option? Something like that could destroy galaxy-wide communications
"a movie that nobody ever really liked" me personally, as a person who so deeply enjoyed this movie this video appeared on my fyp, will not let that slide.
I'm a certified hater of this youtuber I know nothing about now because I think his voice is annoying, this video is literally just a movie recap with snarky comments, and this is genuinely one of the best kids animated movies out there. If any kids movies deserve the "lol this sucks so cringe im too cool for this dumb baby movie!!!" attitude, it's anything that Illumination has made, not this
Fun Fact: This was the last movie I saw on my brother's Xbox 360 before the disc tray broke meaning that no one can use it anymore. I thought about if that should be considered a fond memory or a tragic end.
The last movie I saw on my Xbox 360 before the disc reader got dirty/broken (I don’t know what happened to the disc reader, it just doesn’t read dvds or games properly anymore) was Spider-Man from 2002 on dvd. So that movie for me is both a masterpiece as a movie and as a traumatic experience. I’m glad to know that I’m not the only one who had an experience like this lol.
I dearly miss my Xbox 360. My old dog broke it in 2020 bc my sister was stupid and left the wires all over the floor so when he walked past he tugged on them pulling it off my desk 😭
One time I was playing Super Mario Odyssey on my switch and my sister was running with the dogs. And I had a controller connected to the dock, and she jumped over it which disconnected the switch from the tv and made it fall. Thanks goodness that it survived and is still working.
This movie was so Autistic coded. I actually started ugly crying when Oh just stood there waiting for people to come to his party at the beginning because it hit a core memory of my childhood where no one came to my 7th birthday party because they all thought I was too weird ((about 7 years later, it turns out I was Autistic all along)).
@@estrellaanne1589 It was a long time ago, but it was such a core memory because I remember being really excited and drawing out my own invitations and having a Garfield cake and just waiting for everyone. 🥺 The next year, I was able to get people to visit when I said I was getting a Star Wars cake, but I didn't even get to keep the toy on the top of the cake because I ended up promising the coolest kid in class that he could have it if he would just come to the party, and that's pretty much the last time I had a birthday party and just kept my celebrations with my family at home after that. Since we moved, my best friend also joins in by video call. So at least there's a silver lining to that childhood experience. 🙂
I read “The True Meaning Of Smekday,” And it’s less of a kids book than you think. It’s typically targeted towards teens and has swearing that Dreamworks would not want to use in a kids movie. I kid you not, the last words in the book are something like “pardon my language,” which was kind of like a running joke in the book ig. TLDR:it’s not a kids book and Tip swears in this version.
@@TheSourHours They say hell or ass once or twice, they were most likely only there to keep the movies from getting G rating, ass though they get away with considering Donkey.
If you happen to see this reply, do you have a good place to start researching that because I'm a former business student and I could see exactly how this could be accurate.
I don't really think so. It's basically just a company doing... whatever the hell it does. If anything, it could be a jab given how they tend to uh... ensure they're doing better than the old people or the dogs or whatever.
The irony of how this video starts is unmissable. 1- Insults a decade of beloved media to the very fans who enjoy it. 2- Asks for money. 3- Drops merch. I'm infinitely dead.😂😂😂😂😂😂
Can't believe you forgot about the prequel short for this movie,Almost Home. It takes place before the Boov found earth and is about them hopping from planet to planet and wacky shenanigans happening in them.
when this movie came out my mom was so obsessed with it, she played it on repeat for weeks. i have so many of these scenes seared into my mind that if i was to watch it again, chances are everything would come back to me immediately
5:14 my cat has a mutation where the tip of her tail actually does look like that! it’s completely harmless to the cat so i just wanted to clarify that yes a cat having a curly tail like that is possible lol
The book this movie was based on - The True Meaning of Smekday - was a significant part of my childhood and definitely influenced the kind of person I am today. It has kind of a dry, abdurdist sense of humor with weird, not quite grotesque illustrations interspersed and a heartwarming story set in a dark, almost apocalyptic world. The movie changed so much about it, though, from Gratuity's relationship with her mom all the way down to her alien companion's name. It genuinely hurt to watch when it came out:(
This one's based on a book, too. Surprised no one else is talking about that. It's called The True Meaning of Smekday, the film differs a bit from it but it's not the worst book-to-movie translation I've ever seen.
I remember this one, I saw it in theaters in fact. It was an inoffensive way to spend an afternoon with the family. I remember there was a short before another Dreamworks movie which basically served as a prequel to this, basically a montage of these guys running from planet to planet as they're destroyed, ending with them arriving at Earth
Fun fact: When this video was first posted i was about to go to sleep, so i tried to keep a mental note to watch it once i woke up. This then somehow led my mind to make me dream that i was in the middle of when the boov were invading earth, and despite the fact that i was somehow silently aware that the boov were fictional aliens, and thus also aware of what the invasion would entail, i still feared for my life as i was driving to who knows where. I then somehow ended up entering some kind of facility, which was dilapidated and made out of glass pentagon-shaped tunnels and was built over some kind of forest. Im pretty sure i tried to hide in there, its a bit fuzzy, and then entered a kind of millitary hangar made of wavy-sheet-metal in the facility. i dont remember what was in it or what happened in there, but eventually the thing in there broke open the ceiling, and then i woke up. Keep in mind that i ran into an abandoned facility built over a giant forest to i guess hide from the boov, despite the fact that i never saw a single one of the weird purple guys. Literally the only thing i saw that was related to the boov was their giant ship in the sky. i didnt even see anyone get abducted or anything, i just saw a giant goofy alien tech sphere in the sky and decided that it was time to get in a car i do not own, and drive to the most remote abandoned building i could find. This is not the first time i have had a dream of this oddly elaborate nature, and it probably wont be the last.
The only reason I remember this film nowadays is cause a ton of roleplay accounts related to the film were appearing on Twitter for like a week (and honestly it was one of the best weeks on Twitter imo)
saying rise of the guardians was awful blindsided me because while it may have done badly commercially, it absolutely took over the online fandom space at the time - people were SO unbearably thirsty for jack frost it ruined every social media
i feel like that record might be held by the south park movie considering how most of the voices are done by 3 people (trey parker, matt stone, mary kay bergman) but im not sure if that counts as major and i think that movie had some guest voices (like mike judge)
@@RetroRulzMyTown Yeah i checked the wikipedia page and they got more guest actors than I thought George cloony? Half the south park staff? The 3 people who voiced ike? Why did ike need 3 actors he literally has 3 lines
You do relize rise of guardians is beloved by many people and not all the netflix dreamworks shows are bad race to edge and some of the shows are actually good
The How to Train Your Dragon spinoff shows are truly excellent. Also Dinotrux, as far as little kids’ shows these days go especially, is actually really good
The one scene where Oh (that's his name, no kidding) literally licked the urinal off-screen, mistaking it for lemonade, will always be stuck in my burning memory. Not even _Shrek_ didn't went too far with the toilet humor.
i remember back in like 5th grade when this movie came out there was this guy at my school who was OBSESSED with it. A bit of backstory, I don't know why, but this guy like never showed up for school. The rumors stated that his mom let him stay home whenever he wanted, but hindsight tells me there must've been something else going on. It got to the point where if he showed up for a whole week's worth of school, he'd get half of Friday off to do something with the guidance councilor. After this movie came out, he showed up every single day for 3 weeks just so that he could go see Home, of all movies.
To bad I can't look at it the same! when they went for that movie instead of me and my shadow! I am still in PAIN it looked like such a creative fun movie it had 2D animation!!! sjdbcjasblahbdclk-
I remember having read the book so long ago back in school during my free time, I believe complete adaptation of the book in the form of a show instead of a movie would've been a more satisfying watch. Since I was disappointed at how much they changed the plot.
"What is the purpose of your face?" Made this movie beloved for my whole family. We use that quote very often. Rise of the guardians is shown on Thanksgiving, when a kid doesn't believe in santa, Easter bunny, etc.
This movie is amazing and I love that it has a mother-daughter relationship in it. Even though Rihanna's a big celebrity and I have mixed feelings about big celebrities voicing in kids movies, I think she did a decent job and this is one of the DreamWorks movies that you can sit back with the whole family and enjoy. My parents thought this movie was cute even though they fell asleep during it, and I love it! Now the Bee movie and Boss baby, those are movies DreamWorks SHOULD want to forget about! We all should forget about the bee movie and Boss baby.
Bee movie. Nothing kids like more than stand up comedy and an hour of courtroom scenes. However I will say my daughter would fall asleep to it I guess it was just that boring 🤣
As someone who watched and loved the tv show as a kid (and still love today), I’m not even kidding when I say when badger first showed up in breaking bad, I was like “HOLY SHIT, IT’S KYLE!!!”
As much as I love this movie Bubbasquritle does make some good points pointing out things I never questioned Like Oh’s name and Tip being voiced by Rhinna I’m also probably like one of the 7 people who call this film their favorite dreamworks movie
Most people don't realize that its based on a book because its not in the trailers and instead its hidden in the end of the credits, and There's a lot of changes between the movie and the book and while the overall story beats are relatively the same. The ending, Locations, People and antics they get into are different Of Similar story beats *Tips mom was still captured * The boov destroyed her car and she meets Oh in an convenience store where he converts it to the flying version *they go together to human land *Tip crying above the ocean and the heart to heart *The boov preparing to leave again after the Gorg show up Of different story beats *They actually go to Florida because its originally the location the Boov gave the humans, but they discover they aren't there because the Boov discovered oranges. * They discover other humans survived relocation in "Happy Mouse Kingdom" in Orlando * They also find the Gorg ships in Florida and attacking a Boov ship *On their way to the actual location, Arizona, they visit Roswell, New Mexico and discover the Gorg are capturing cats, one of the residents betrays tip and pig because they want the Gorg to go away, *You find out they were actually named something else originally from J.Lo (actual name of Oh) and Infighting had only one survive who was named Gorg, which is why the name changed. *Gorg used some technology they created to clone himself repeatedly. *Between Arizona and Roswell It is also discovered the Gorg are incredibly allergic to cats. * Tip mom was taken earlier then everyone else, which is why tip was in hiding, knew of the Boov's existence, and had the car, as she was used to learn how to speak the languages of earth, among others. *how they defeat them, which was they cloned Pig millions of times and teleported them to the Gorg ships, which notably are made of Gorg clones. (not joking their actual skin is the hull), the ships have a visceral reaction and evacuate leaving them all alone. there's a couple of other things of note but those are the biggest changes. although I can see why they might have changed the method of defeat as animating that as well as putting that on the big screen would be kind of disgusting. Definitely read the book as its a lot better then the movie also having watched more of the video, the urinal scene does kind of exists, Oh just comments after tip tells him to use the male bathroom while she's in the female one and he comments afterwards that he enjoyed the cakes inside, which after questioning, tip discovers what he means.
every time i see anything related to that movie i just think about the fact that my english teacher, after hearing the description of the plot, said: “so it’s just the kid friendly version of British/USA Colonization of America?”
I read the book (The True Meaning of Smekday) that was adapted from and I remember it was distinctly more subdued/grounded and the POV character is the girl. Like, it felt way less goofy. However, that was when I read it as a kid, and I still feel that the book was more mature somehow. My memory is spotty from years of not thinking of this book and movie adaptation .
I loveddddd the book as a kid, even wrote the author and got a response back from him. Was excited when I heard a movie was being made then disappointed when the vast was announced and the movie came out 😢
The book was definitely goofy at times. I mean, the big bad was defeated by the cat. A lot of the cat, in fact. The B.O.O.B.S., of which there were two of, one of the groups the name was for, I think it stood for something like "Boys Organized (some synonym for 'against' that starts with O???) Boov(S?)" or something... I could probably just look it up, but it's more fun trying to jog my own memory and work these things out from what I can. Or going to 'totally-not-literally-just-disneyland' in florida. I remember J.Lo finding cleaning supplies as good food. And the fact that O was literally named J.Lo in the first place. There were definitely silly moments, and a generally lighthearted tone, but... It was also taken seriously. The jokes were actually memorable, but, they didn't completely ruin the tone. Okay, now I'm definitely wanting to re-read it. Maybe I should check if my local library has a copy...
The book was fantastic. I am a teacher and I read it with my class before the movie was a thing. I got very excited when I heard a movie was being made and the movie totally missed all of the subtext that is in the book. Yes the book is Goofy but it also had a lot of subtext involving discrimination and a neat section of the book where they're in Area 51 / Roswell.
It's like War of the Worlds but instead of the heat rays and human harvesting it's tractor beams and reservations. Don't get me wrong, they're still annoying invaders that messed up the perfectly good infrastructure with antigravity, but at least they weren't total barbarians about it.
Idk I really liked home. I was going through a really hard time and watching it always made me feel better. Now that it's been years I realize how flawed it is, but I think I'll always have an appreciation of it.
18:20 i cannot be the only one who thought of disneys Chicken Little where this exact thing happened where small cute aliens in big scary robot suits turned out to be looking for their lost child

same ngl it was really precious to see this horrible scary alien guy just wanted to save their children and keep the species going. and these knuckleheads were the ones that took it like wtf
i ADORE this movie. i will actually choose to watch it on occasion, because the voice actors are great, the jokes are funny, and the soundtrack is awesome bc it's Rihanna. i cry at the ending every time just because of As Real as You and Me. Jim Parsons and Rihanna have great chemistry and they clearly had a good time being in it
i vividly remember going to this movie in theaters and me and my mom were the ONLY two people watching there. they cleaned the movie theater while we were watching (after checking with us DIRECTLY)
Come on you guys, give the man some credit. You surely would do the same too if you had some plushes of yourself you know? Atleast I know I sure would do.
Did you know: the shattering sound plays BEFORE the Oh figure is hit with the aluminium bat, but there’s no footage of the bat swinging, and it just hits the figure spontaneously instead. This sort of instantaneous effect is the kind of thing that makes comedy effective.
Judging by the homes, resources, and ammenties he provided the displaced humans with, I think the guy could actually be able to solve america's current housing crisis
As a foster child, and the girl pegged an outcast from an early age, I actually adored this movie. I remember it bringing so many tears to my dad and I's eyes. May have to go and rewatch, as it has been a couple of years, but I remember the design being creative, the colors being cute and the humor being pretty good!
hey me too! I was a foster kid when this movie came out, and it struck a huge cord with me. another comment said how the movie resonated with them as an autistic person, and I grew up as an autistic girl, in fostercare, and watching a movie about being violently ripped from your home, being a social outcast... shoot dude it hits and it hits hard. me and my siblings would watch this movie all the time, bringing me and my older brother to tears because we understood our situation better than the younger two. watching it with my parents, my dad also would tear up. dad never talked about why he would tear up but I assume he related to Tip's journey trying to get her mom back, kinda parallel of my family's situation. Home was such a good movie, I understand why some people don't like it, but it makes me cry every time
Back when I was little, I loved that movie though! Honestly I thought it was very well put together, and it still remains a key movie of my childhood to this day. Say what you will, but to me that movie was a masterpiece along with several other dreamworks movies I've seen.

When this video was first posted i was about to go to sleep, so i tried to keep a mental note to watch it once i woke up.

Most people don't realize that its based on a book because its not in the trailers and instead its hidden in the end of the credits, and There's a lot of changes between the movie and the book and while the overall story beats are relatively the same. The ending, Locations, People and antics they get into are different
Of Similar story beats
*Tips mom was still captured
* The boov destroyed her car and she meets Oh in an convenience store where he converts it to the flying version
*they go together to human land
*Tip crying above the ocean and the heart to heart
*The boov preparing to leave again after the Gorg show up
Of different story beats
*They actually go to Florida because its originally the location the Boov gave the humans, but they discover they aren't there because the Boov discovered oranges.
* They discover other humans survived relocation in "Happy Mouse Kingdom" in Orlando
* They also find the Gorg ships in Florida and attacking a Boov ship
*On their way to the actual location, Arizona, they visit Roswell, New Mexico and discover the Gorg are capturing cats, one of the residents betrays tip and pig because they want the Gorg to go away,
*You find out they were actually named something else originally from J.Lo (actual name of Oh) and Infighting had only one survive who was named Gorg, which is why the name changed.
Definitely read the book as its a lot better then the movie
also having watched more of the video, the urinal scene does kind of exists, Oh just comments after tip tells him to use the male bathroom while she's in the female one and he comments afterwards that he enjoyed the cakes inside, which after questioning, tip discovers what he means.

I actually haven't forgotten about this because i still watch this even to this day. No matter how old i am
every time i see anything related to that movie i just think about the fact that my english teacher, after hearing the description of the plot, said: “so it’s just the kid friendly version of British/USA Colonization of America?”
i mean ye pretty much lol
I read the book (The True Meaning of Smekday) that was adapted from and I remember it was distinctly more subdued/grounded and the POV character is the girl. Like, it felt way less goofy. However, that was when I read it as a kid, and I still feel that the book was more mature somehow. My memory is spotty from years of not thinking of this book and movie adaptation .
No, that's accurate.
yeah the book is still goofy, but in a much more grim way, and the scary aliens were actually scary and there was none of the stupid slapstick humor
They took over the Earth in 2 minutes. Imagine if they were bad.
It's like War of the Worlds but instead of the heat rays and human harvesting it's tractor beams and reservations. Don't get me wrong, they're still annoying invaders that messed up the perfectly good infrastructure with antigravity, but at least they weren't total barbarians about it.

Edit: thank god I'm not the only one who likes Home
Same

3:55 captain shek chooses to run away from his enemies because if he engages in battle, he knows that he will destroy hundreds of universes
18:20 i cannot be the only one who thought of disneys Chicken Little where this exact thing happened where small cute aliens in big scary robot suits turned out to be looking for their lost child
Yeah and they looked like exactly the same😰
i immediately thought of that when I saw this
I never made that obvious connection until now😮
i think peak mental illness is me discovering your account today and only watching this video in the background and before you even mentioned sonic my dumbass was like 'THATS SONIC MUSIC IN THE BACKGROUND'
I pretty much loved the twist with the supposed alien villain, he was just trying to save his species no matter what
same ngl it was really precious to see this horrible scary alien guy just wanted to save their children and keep the species going. and these knuckleheads were the ones that took it like wtf
"THATS. enough. shushing." hardest line in cinematic history
I’m fcking shaking
i ADORE this movie. i will actually choose to watch it on occasion, because the voice actors are great, the jokes are funny, and the soundtrack is awesome bc it's Rihanna. i cry at the ending every time just because of As Real as You and Me. Jim Parsons and Rihanna have great chemistry and they clearly had a good time being in it
i vividly remember going to this movie in theaters and me and my mom were the ONLY two people watching there. they cleaned the movie theater while we were watching (after checking with us DIRECTLY)
he stops talking about his merch at 2:45
Ngl I find UA-camrs advertising their merch pretty annoying
You are an angel

Come on you guys, give the man some credit. You surely would do the same too if you had some plushes of yourself you know? Atleast I know I sure would do.
Did you know: the shattering sound plays BEFORE the Oh figure is hit with the aluminium bat, but there’s no footage of the bat swinging, and it just hits the figure spontaneously instead. This sort of instantaneous effect is the kind of thing that makes comedy effective.
2x speed memes and consecutive memes are funny because of that too. its all there
Captain Smek for president 2024
He would have popped OFF in the debate fr
Yea he’d be a good president
Imagine the debates bro ☠️
Judging by the homes, resources, and ammenties he provided the displaced humans with, I think the guy could actually be able to solve america's current housing crisis
Shush
Thanks to you, my new favorite way of describing any movie is "an hour and a half of pure adjectives."
5:43 That ain't duct tape, that's the holy grail that fixes everything.
Nah it’s the anti-crust
Flex tape
As a foster child, and the girl pegged an outcast from an early age, I actually adored this movie. I remember it bringing so many tears to my dad and I's eyes.
May have to go and rewatch, as it has been a couple of years, but I remember the design being creative, the colors being cute and the humor being pretty good!
WTF
the girl did what?

“Dreamworks wants you to forget”
Meanwhile my son playing this movie 100 times
Back when I was little, I loved that movie though! Honestly I thought it was very well put together, and it still remains a key movie of my childhood to this day. Say what you will, but to me that movie was a masterpiece along with several other dreamworks movies I've seen.
