As an old-school sm64 TASer, it amazes me that people are even able to perform a perfect side blj into the dire dire docks door. You don't even know. Like, doing something like that in real-time was barely considered possible when I was in that community. And to do it alongside the stress of a perfect performance for the other 6 minutes? God-tier
I'm not even a big gamer or anything but I love watching videos of people completely breaking a game. Mario 64 has always been my favorite (and the only game I've 100%). It blows my mind that this kid pretty much did a TAS by hand.

When a world-class speedrunner starts yelling "There's no mistakes," you know something magical has happened. Speedrunners are *always* aware of their mistakes, so that gave me goosebumps.

I know right? I'm just wondering who introduced him to it. This game defined many people's childhoods (not mine, I'm a PC guy) because it was the hot thing when they were growing up. Now it's a really niche thing that a few people are doing.

No, it's not you, brother.
I never played it until I popped in the 3D All Stars version a couple years back, at age 25.
I could barely grapple with the controls enough to get to Bowser. I went into the game envisioning a satisfying 120 star completion, ended up with the feeling of running out of stars that even felt doable. I did beat Bowser, but might not go back for the 120. At least not without a walkthrough.

I think it would be interesting seeing a video on how the authenticators check runs like this. The suspicions must be high with getting two perfect runs so close to each other so I'm guessing there's been extra scrutiny of Suigi? Reckon you could grab some interviews?
I was wondering the same thing. Sort of ironic that it's some of Karl's other videos, those about cheaters in speedrunning, which make me think about this.
A bot copy and pasted your comment and is getting more engagement than your comment. I legitimately don’t know why UA-cam has not gotten a handle on these bots.
Bot copy pasting your comment aside, it isn’t like Suigi just played a single run for both categories and got two world records. He has put a ton of time into these tricks and mastering the movement. Not saying it’s impossible but it’s highly unlikely.
@@TheGuyWhoIsSittingit wouldn't be the first time a top runner has faked a wr. Sometimes there's a feeling of "I've come so close so many times" "I've put so much time into this" and "I deserve it". I'm not saying the runs were faked, but ruling it out on cred alone is a recipe for disaster. Every wr in a competitive game like this, especially ones as landmark and sea changing as these runs are, should be checked as thoroughly as possible.
Personally, I also think hand cams should be required for top times in all games.
@@TheGuyWhoIsSitting To the contrary, as seen before, people who put more time into a game also think they are more deserving. He is also full of risk factors for it imho. A lot of people put a lot of time in without these results. Two WRs in quick succession seems more unlikely to me.
That being said, regardless of my suspicions, its up to the experts to do an analysis if they care, and right now, it seems like they're satisfied. I don't run it, and I haven't even been following his progress so my concerns shouldn't carry any weight. I haven't even heard of him until this came to light, so I assume he hasn't been relevent at the WR level for very long compared to other SM64 runners. But I don't follow it that closely, so again, I wouldn't know.
He could have done more to make it clear his runs were legitimate, such as not cutting off his hands during the streams. You would think that would come up once you start getting WRs, but it might not be practical for his set up so *shrug*

Going back over and over (and per simply) on the 16 star run, the most time that could have been gained from just tad bit more optimization off of that run, is 1.5, MAYBE 2 seconds. And that has to be 100% optimized purely perfect not even the slightest of mistakes. Purely insane.

@@RandomAccount-pr5uq that assumption has killed lesser leaderboards. For there to be zero controversy about his victory it's almost strange in this hate-a-day world. I think he has already been caught cheating and the admins are waiting and watching to see if they can sweep up all his runs at once from all the games he plays.
@@ssgoko88 Lesser leaderboards, definitely. But when it's one of the top 3 variants on one of the most speedran games at the moment it's different
But how can people cheat when they play live?

You gotta love how hype he was. Instantly puts a smile on your face. Dude is an absolute machine!
man just destroyed every other speedrunner and thought we wouldn't notice💀
Only a quarter into 2023 and a Perfect Mario 64 is looking incredibly close after seeing the records slowly creep further and further down every year
I played SM64 more than 10 years ago and recently I decided to try it again after watching a ton speedruns all this years. Doing the common tricks is kinda hard but damn... Speedrunners have a lot of control and technique, especially for the camera. I respect all of them because this game is complex
Imagine he's just about to grab the final star and suddenly a cosmic ray flips a bit and sends him into the stratosphere, dooming the record.
Just for the record, that is not that uncommon anymore
either someone has to play even more perfect and get constant millisecond time increases or some big discoveries has to be made with new strategies. safe to say this is gonna be one of the longest running records in modern speedrunning history. and its on one of the biggest games in speedrunning. thats insane man.
I just hope that this video doesn't end up having to be looked back at as an example of "we all thought he was the greatest, but he was the worst"
4am in Dublin, just off work and on the way home with some fresh Legend content ...Lubbly jubbly! Much love to all you legends in Karl’s community. Best bunch of folk around! Absolutely first class video as usual Karl mate 👍
Hell yeah bro I'm Irish too. Hows Dublin these days?
love it when a comment mentions whjere theyre from, and immediately i hear the accent when i read the sentence
Thanks you legend/mate
Me I am from Belgium (I know nobody care but) ^^
@@julaizaya7946 Belgium is a beautiful country. I visited with my grandad whose father was in an Irish regiment in the BEF and was evacuated at Dunkirk. Very beautiful country and very friendly lovely people. And wow do I love Trappist beers! Thank you for the lovely reply mate
I told him like a year ago in a UA-cam comment he was undoubtedly going to get wr in 16 as he has improved faster than anyone should. I take full credit for his accomplishments
How gracious of you.
Wow! How humble!
@@ParkerSaint I am literally the best at being humble in the world. I only wish others could be as humble as me, though it is asking a lot.
You could see the genuine excitement and unbelief at his run. That's so cool!
Suigi looks so unassuming in person. I would have never suspected that he would be a legendary speedrunner if I met him on the street
Bro, even though we all know how it ends, you still manage to expertly weave suspense into your narration. It's really well done.
And man, the kids reaction is epic. I love watching for the reactions almost as much as the actual content.
This kid is something else, man. Insane skills.
And here I am, sat with my n64 and mario booted up. Such a good game and such a good speedrun. Suigi earned all respect and attention he gets. He’s a legend and is essentially competing against himself.
This is the one big game I missed growing up despite having an N64. Do you think it still holds up as a game worth playing in 2023 outside of speedrunning? I'm definitely interested to try it.
@@PsiRedEye22 if you're a fan of the other 3d marios then I would say yes but I defo have a bias XD
Suigi is an artist but his reactions to his WRs are undoubtedly hilarious.
