  • Based on a dark-room demo of the Sony A95K QD-OLED vs last year's A90J OLED TV, it seems QD-OLED may have solved a longstanding problem of conventional OLED TV.

    The main reason i went Panasonic two years ago was for the superior handling of this issue. The MAIN reason i switched to OLED was because i fucking love my contrast and my dynamic range, and for me it was vital to have phenomenal dark/blacks handling. I couldn't care less about HDR, i just wanted fantastic "lows" in the range. Still surprised it took this long and with a new tech, to get it widely solved on the global industry scale.

    • @nathanddrews
      @nathanddrews 2 роки тому +15

      Just to be clear - you don't care about peak brightness, but you DO care about HDR. HDR =/= brightness. The "R" in HDR is "range". The black/near black performance is just one half of the equation. Now we're getting closer to having both!

    • @getsideways7257
      @getsideways7257 2 роки тому

      @@nathanddrews You both are forgetting color gamut. HDR is about *all* of these things. Saying "I don't care about HDR" is practically equivalent to saying "I'd rather listen to radio instead". Might as well go back to analog black and white.

    • @nathanddrews
      @nathanddrews 2 роки тому

      @@getsideways7257 I'm going to be a bit pedantic here: dynamic range and color spaces are related, but different things. If we're talking about Rec. 2100, then yes, the marketed "HDR" is a specific combination of both.

    • @getsideways7257
      @getsideways7257 2 роки тому

      @@nathanddrews Of course I was talking exactly about the marketed "HDR", which should have been called something like "luminosity range extension" instead.
      Also, if we were really pedantic, we would be talking about "dynamic" range only in context of, say, human vision or hearing. HDR10 - by design - is static with the range of "near zero" to 10,000 nit. HDR10+, on the other hand, is supposed to cram all of that into the actual physical range of a given consumer device.

    • @Grawbad
      @Grawbad Рік тому

  • @buzz.b

    Thank goodness. It was the near black handling and flashing artefacts that put me off the previous generations. Hopefully the full review confirms this is still the case on consumer models. • @RSV9

    Something to consider:
    There is a trend in new movies that are coming out more and more. Movies are getting darker in many scenes. Be it Batman, Mandalorian, Runaways or other series or blockbusters, the trend of black crushing and DSE is increasing. That is why it is important when doing the gray test, not to just start from 40% where everything is already ok, but from 5-10%, which is the level reached by many new productions.
    Vincent, I hope you will consider that aspect in the next tests and reviews.

    The improvement to near blacks is the biggest for me. I love how dark my C7 OLED gets, but it definitely does crush some dark greys to black and without a completely blacked out room the reflections make it harder to watch. Sadly my C7 has pretty bad burn in now, but i've been using it as a monitor for 5 years, and often for 15+hour sessions. The burn in isn't any kind of static image like a windows taskbar (i have everything set to auto-hide) its three blue dots in the top-left corner that i can only see when the screen shows red/orange in that corner of the screen. And on Red there is also a MASSIVE angled rectangle going through the bottom of the screen and overall the screen has this look like its dirty.

      My biggest concern is the fact that it uses blue OLEDs for blue sub-pixels as well as to illuminate the red and green quantum dots. Blue OLEDs have the worst lifespan of all OLED colors. They only last about 10,000 hours before they start to have a noticeable loss brightness as well as color shift. That's exactly why Samsung abandoned the idea of true RGB OLED TVs for the commercial market several years ago. I have no doubt that QD-OLED looks great and better than WRGB OLED when brand new but what will it look like 3-5 years from now? I'm not willing to spend the money to find out for myself. I have a Sony A80J and I'll be keeping it until either micro LED (one LED per sub-pixel) or QDEL are $2,000-2,200 for a 65".

      You are literally quoting numbers from back in the day, not to mention, that you completely ignore the fact that a missing red and green sub-pixel also means missing chemical and heat transfer interaction.
      The lifetime of blue shouldn't be a problem anymore since modern blue pixels, depending on the compounds have theoretical brightness limits of around 3000 nits. These TVs don't come even close to that number and if you assume it would still degrade about 5 percent(the rate at which the pixel would be declared end of its life) in 10.000 hours (which isn't the case anymore), you could multiply that number by at least 11 until this panel would show a difference in specular highlights.

Monitor wise my newest monitor is nearly 7 years old at this point and my oldest is over 10 years old in my triple monitor setup, and somehow I actually prefer the washed out look at least for gaming as I am able to spot everything in the shadows and this also goes for watching content too to some respect. The Q60T maxes out under 500 nits, but it can do 500 nits full screen. The S95B is gonna be around 200 nits full screen (which sounds like a bigger difference than it is, your eyes would perceive that as like a 30% difference). However the S95B can hit a thousand nits on a 10 percent window and 1600 on a 1 percent window. So bright sections of the screen, especially specular highlights, would be much brighter. If the Q60T isn't bright enough for you in SDR, then I'm guessing you have a lot of ambient light in your room and you'd probably want to go with a higher end LCD vs any kind of OLED.
