- In Destiny's Lore there are guardians that have fallen the the corruption of the Darkness. The infamous guardian "Dredgen Yor" is one of the most terrible of these guardians. The Shadows of Yor have taken after him and have recreated the Thorn, his terrible weapon of sorrow.

The story behind Yor, Thorn, Shin, and The Last Word are some of the greatest story telling Bungie has put into Destiny and is definitely a story worth telling as well as one I'd like to see more of. I'm a little sad that The First Curse isn't given a bigger role in the lore. I'd like to see more of it's story as well. As always, a great lore video Byf. Can't wait for more.
Food for thought. Yor grafted the bones of the hive onto his weapon, but they never specify the type of weapon Rose is before the bones are grafted onto it. Could The first Curse, the start of the fall before Yor, have been his weapon before it was corrupted? It's the twin of The Last Word, and Shin and Yor were best friends. Perhaps the weapon schematics were lost because of that twisted past in which he corrupted the weapon into a weapon of sorrow.

Hmmm I've never thought about that. It's an interesting theory. The Grimoire for The First Curse is very open ended, but... I'm not sure how much truth can be pulled from that. The Last Word and The First Curse have the exact same frame and style with the only noticeable difference being the finish on the weapon. Thorn on the other hand looks structurally different from either of them. Coupled with Rose being capitalized in the Grimoire as well leads me to believe it was its own weapon.
Where did you find that Ward and Yor where friends at some point? The closest I can find is Ghost Frag Thorn 4 where Yor's Ghost calls him a monster to which Yor replies, "An old friend once saw me as the same. He was right, and, had we met earlier, so too would you be." Suggesting that the old friend he's referring to would not have been Jaren, whom he had just killed, but someone known to him before he met his Ghost and became a Guardian. But then... if someone called him a monster then, was he always fated to become a "monster"? What did he do back then for someone to have called him a monster? Why then, would he be chosen by a Ghost to wield the Traveler's Light? There are still a lot of mysteries around these three hand cannons so I won't dismiss completely the possibility, but I can find more reasons to think of the Rose as it's own weapon than I can The First Curse theory.

perhaps the ward theory was not correct, but as for The First Curse being his Rose, go to Legend:Rezyl Azzir - The Triumphant Fall. Then look at The First Curses description. I think this might be a witty repertoire, but it says "Rezyl’s cannon was loaded and ready to fire as if an afterthought." Then you go to the first curses description and it says " when death is an afterthought".
I actually had to go look that Rezyl card up because I don't have it for some reason.... anyway I saw what you're talking about. Like you said it could be just clever wording but that is a big coincidence that doesn't occur very often in the Grimoire (from my experience anyway). What really gets me thinking though is this line when he's fighting the Knight, "He smiled beneath his helm, then spun his Rose with a confident Hunter’s twirl, before steadying his aim and fanning its hammer one more." That sounds exactly like The Last Word to me. The First Curse does have that "Hunter's twirl" animation when drawn but isn't fan fired like The Last Word. With the Grimoire being so open ended on The First Curse it's a real possibility that Rezyl wielded it once upon a time.

My question is why did I get the notification that you replied just now.
Does anyone else think that Rezyl Azzir's other weapon, the auto rifle called "Inferno", which was lost when he was captured by the Hive, could be the Necrochasm? It's Grimoire card says, and I quote, "...a lost Guardian's weapon was altered by the Hive in an attempt to fuse their own dark understanding with humanity's mastery of war." This seems to indicate that this gun was once a weapon of a Guardian, much like the Rose. Secondly, the card states that "Any Guardian who comes across the weapon must ask some very simple questions with some very complicated answers: Is your Light strong enough to stand, even briefly, in full gaze of the Hive's abyss? Can it handle what has died and been reborn in those shadows?" This quote seems to indicate that this gun was remade into the jagged Weapon of Sorrow it is today; again, much like the Rose. To me, this tells the tale of the Inferno, a legendary weapon wielded by one of the greatest Guardians to ever live, that became twisted and corrupted by a sinister power, much like what happened to Azzil, who would eventually become Yor.

I'm calling it now: these Shadows and Shin Malphur's likely involvement with them is just a setup for exotic quests for D2 versions of Thorn and TLW.
Edit: Huh, kinda called it? And maybe the Vanguard weren't too concerned because Shin Malphur is their enforcer to deal with such fallen Guardians.

I want to retroactively point out that at 12:37 you called the Shadow's decision their "Gambit." Did THAT ever turn out to be a good choice of words.
After getting Malfeasance this totally makes sense! The Drifter being one of those Shadows and the Gunslinger killing his team. Also the rumor of the Last Word coming back in the next dlc.

As someone else commented, this is one of my fav stories in destiny. Great job as always, Byf. I would love to hear more about this group, the showdown between guardians of light and darkness, more last word, thorn, and first curse lore. Hell, you could talk about the history of paper clips and it would be riveting.
Seriously, Dredgen Yor is one of the most interesting character's of the destiny lore. I love these explanations Byf. Keep up the good work.

I like to think that the original idea spark of The Shadows of Yor is guardians who used Thorn in the crucible back in the day. Maybe if Thorn/Last Word never got as popular in crucible as it did so long ago, then maybe we never would have this story. So because of us, we helped build and fueled this specific destiny story.

Been waiting for the Shadows of Yor story for months now glad you did it it was my favorite piece of lore. Shin Malphur was 90% of the reason I stayed hunter in D1 (and what’s funny is it turned out I was pretty good with last word) Anyway great vid totally worth watching

I firmly believe that the Shadows of Yor are walking down a dark and dangerous path. However, with our access to the Light severely hampered, they may end up being one the most important allies for retaking the City.

I could see people like the Shadows firmly believing that, but they are a lost people ultimately. Let's face it. This isn't a new story. We've seen it told over and over again throughout history. When has it ever turned out well? These Shadows are like the cultists who summon a dark god because they think they can either earn its favor and bind its power to their will, and then use that power to remake the world into a better place. Upon summoning this entity, however, they pretty much always find out the hard way that it doesn't understand gratitude and can't be controlled. It exists simply to destroy.
stanklepoot A few times though, the cultists succeed, and stuff goes crazy. With death-based, Darkness subclasses, they could force people to realize their power. Dredgen Yor survived the darkness, after all.
A much more dramatic reading than usual, I love it. Keep it coming, Byf! Also, love the Elder Scrolls font.

Its possible. The new forsaken DLC lays heavily into the idea that the dark and light can be melded together and hard to distinguish what side you really play for.
Probably in Destiny 3 it will let you choose which side you're on.
Then Shin will just paint you on a wall with his golden gun

Probably one of my favorite videos so far Byf, I truly am excited for the possibilities The Shadows of Yor could provide to the depth of D2’s story. I think the questionable arrival of the Drifter and his embrace of the darkness is a beautiful foreshadowing of what’s to come for our guardians. Because again “Do you really know what side you’re on?” I think the possibility of embracing the darkness and making a choice that can actually effect our characters perception, power and story would be phenomenal!

So I found your videos upon doing research on Destiny 2s Titan sea monster. From there I've been watching them for the past 2hrs and I must say, you should look into voice acting. The way your narrate and the clarity you read the Grimoire cards with is simply amazing. This is now my go to for all things destiny lore related.

Really like the slow scrolling of the text. The Shadows of Yor to me have the implication that you have to fight fire with fire. they're walking a fine line, a razor's edge, that would make others go mad if not, they fall. I say that their heads are in the right place, but they have to keep on that razor's edge, for if they don't, their path, paved with light, will succum to darkness.

Actually, it was said, that we will get to see and explore the Forest that was Corrupted by Darkness (Destroyed by Corrupted Light), so maybe we will get to know something new about "Sorrow" and "Thorn(s)" :)
I hope so actually would be really great to fight fire team vs fire team against some corrupted guardians. AKA what fighting the Iron Lords should've been like

Great Destiny Lore video, Byf! Your Destiny Lore videos keep getting better! Keep up the great work! I think that the powers that the Shadows of Yor possess will be beneficial in the fight against Gary and the Red Legion. The gambit that the Shadows of Yor took will be advantageous for the survival of the Traveler, Solar System, The Last City, and Humanity in Destiny 2! I hope that there will be more lore regarding the Shadows of Yor, Weapons of Sorrow, and the Darkness in Destiny 2!
This reminds me of Revenge of the Sith. Bungie loves Star Wars references, a Guardian turns to the dark, and the older wiser guardian comes along to stop him, but his influence on others is too strong.

I think the shadows of being set up to be either the next Taken King Sized DLC or the villains of the final game, The creation of guardian NPC's to fight alongside you when combined with the Shadows of Yor cards has me thinking that they have a plan for a guardian style enemy
How fascinating that Dredgen yor was a titan, and yet most of the Dredgens in game are hunters lol.
This probably won't be explored in Destiny 2. Bungie said Destiny 2 is all about learning about The Traveler and our light. They also said once that's done, Destiny 3 will be about learning everything about the darkness.

We need an entire Destiny game (or long DLC) based around the Shadows, the past that Cayde and The Drifter has And something that will expand upon the story of Shin Malphur and Dredgen Yor.

Nothing given nothing taken. For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. There is nothing in this universe that is truly free.
I’m no lore expert or game designer,but I think that at some point in Destiny’s future there should be a crucible map called Dwindlers Ridge.And in one small corner an empty grave with a gravestone that says in some kind of foreign language “The Titan Reizyl Azzir who fell from grace,He lies here as the Dark Guardian Dredgen Yor.”
Alright Byf, I've been rewatching the Destiny Lore playlist and there are some FISHY THINGS GOING ON. Talking about the shadows, their lack of appearance in destiny 2 and "their GAMBIT" Oddly coincidental that we meet a shadow, who just happens to run a game mode CALLED GAMBIT.
I just realized, with Beyond Light's focus on wielding the darkness as stasis, the shadows of yor are gonna have to be involved now.
I just hope they become Takanuva as opposed to Dredgen Yor.

The concept art for this video just gives further proof of why Destiny 2 needs proper re-fashion/vanity systems for guardian customization.

Personally, I think some one with "tainted light" has the potential to be the most dangerous foe in the universe. That is, if they have truly mastered handling both the light and the darkness. The knowledge they obtain alone would be enough to sway battles.
For any Star wars fans, I'd liken it to the Grey Jedi.
i believe that guardians who turn from the light are the ones who know the true identity, and purpose of the traveler and what it has done to the other races like the vex and the fallen
And they are trying to gain more dark power so that they could fight off the traveler. Possibly maybe?
I believe now that the dreaming city corruption as it progresses will unlock the malfeasance exotic handcannon from watching this.
So dont know if anyone noticed but a year before forsaken comes out this vid comes out. Byf mentions the shadows of yor's gambit. Forsaken has a new game mode called gambit. Run by the drifter who is connected to the shadows. And getting all the triumphs for gambit gives you the dredgen title. Byf you secretly working for bungie????? If not damn thats a wierd coincidence.

I would love to learn more about Shin Malphur. You hear quite a lot about the titans and warlocks. Saint 14 and Osiris being huge examples, but hunters haven't had an opportunity to really shine.

I think this is one of the most dangerous things we face in Destiny, lore-wise. People think that the SIVA corrupted Iron Lords were scary enough, people wanted to see what happens when a Guardian becomes Taken, if that is even possible. These Guardians, however, have knowingly and willingly accepted and bathed in the Darkness itself, becoming tools, willing or otherwise, but far more powerful than those we've faced so far. The fact that we may need to follow in their footsteps to fight back to reclaim the Traveller is downright disturbing, seeing how much utter devastation the Darkness has wrought on humanity. Could we control it even if we wanted to? Would we continue to be drawn to its power until we are literally part of the Darkness as a whole? Scary stuff, looking forward to seeing more of this.

Hey Byf. I noticed that there are two of the contraptions that are in the speakers room. One in the tower and one in the Iron Temple. The one in the iron temple is broken and run down but it is definitely the same thing. I thought it was interesting and just wanted to share that with you
