That the "longest space battle in history" was a whole whopping two hours just goes to show how absolutely lethal and unforgiving such combat could be.
Well considering that in Dune Universe if a laser beam hits a shield's force field it causes a 2-10 megaton nuclear explosion it kinda changes a lot. Dune is an interesting universe where this specific quirk created a futuristic sci-fi envirnoment where only melee is feasible. Guns/cannons/plasma/pulse/Tesla weaponry are basically useless and laser weaponry is only useful from like the orbit. So you have space battles waged like ancient greeks, where only close quarter boarding actions are functional. Otherwise you either just let devastating rocket barrages blow you from the sky or turn on the shield and risk a total annihilation of both fleets.
@@Galejro Not really. Having a shield in a space battle over great distances poses a greater risk for the defender if the attacker uses lasweapons. Beam weapons would therefore still be viable, all things considered. You either get blown up if you have a shield or torn to pieces by weapons you could only see the moment they hit if you don't have a shield. It would probably explain why space battles were very short... Herbert didn't really spend a lot of time or effort describing space warfare in his works, which is a shame.
Something you don't mention is that by the time of the events of Dune, the Sardaukar were not as they had once been. @@ForageGardener not the same planet Fremen are from Arrakis, while the Sardukar are from Salusa Secundus, although they're both descendants of the same group of people who visited and settled both Selusa Secundus and Arrakis
Well the fremen had the advantage of fighting on their on ground. Shield technology was not possible on arrakis so they had a different fighting style while the sardaukar fought in a way to counter shields the best. (Which was pointless)
One thing I haven't noticed (yet) is anyone bringing up the fact that the Fremen as a major fighting force didn't last very long. After Leto II came to the thrown they were supplanted by the Fish Speakers who had were around almost as long as the God Emperor. The Fremen only really held sway for a few decades if I'm right. The Sardaukar however, were around for about 10,000 years and that's nothing to be ashamed of.
A great breakdown of such a long and complicated history. I knew from reading the books years ago that Secundus was a prison world. I didn't know how it got that way or that the Sardakur were so we'll fleshed out.

Well that was eye opening. I assumed the Sardaukar were from an independent planet that the ruling house managed to get under their heal and psychologically dominate… turns out the Emperor and his house ARE Sardaukar. This all makes so much more sense now. Thanks !
There IS technically a House Sardaukar and there is some surface pretense that House Corrino and the Sardaukar are linked but still seperate entities to hide the fact that Salusa Secundus was the birthworld of the Sardaukar and that it is where they get their recruits from. Many just assume the Imperial levies are where Sardaukar come from, not the brutal prison planet. The Atreides do figure it out and that is why they are so eager to get the Fremen on their side as allies. So they can use their own pretty awesome troops combined with Fremen units and overwhelm the trap that was Arrakis.

By the time the sardukar possessed kinetic shielding they would not have possessed laser based weaponry anymore, as it's very much the invention of such shielding that led to kinetic based weaponry returning in force, and melee weapons staying relevant, as a laser based weapon firing on one of those shields is akin to setting off multiple nuclear bombs simultaneously, and why such weaponry became mutually illegal across space, it would kill everyone involved. This is also why stutter fire and the specific martial skills for slowing one's swing to pass through the shielding to return momentum was so important.

@@ahmadfrhan5265 Yep,that a given, espec. in the overt use of 'jihad',etc. in the 1st Dune novel, with Herbert's re-interpretation of the original Arab invasions of The Prophet Muhammad and his immediate successors;in the same way that GRRM uses The Crusades/Hundred Years War/the War of the Roses as inspiration for his alternative 'Game of Thrones' medieval history! 👍
Thank you SOOOOO MUCH for using the Dune Encyclopedia as a source instead of those terrible Brian Herbert books. This is the real, approved expansion of the Dune Lore. Unlike that fanfiction that BH and KJA have been pumping out.
Approved by whom? - I really dislike the BH books, too. But canon could really only come from Frank Herbert, who is dead, or someone who has original texts written by Frank, his son.
Agree totally, said as such in a later post.
@@bastisonnenkind Frank Herbert wrote the intro for the Encyclopedia and gave it his blessing
@@octavioortiz679 And then everything magically got canon?
@@bastisonnenkind I’m not saying it perfectly fits into the dune universe but the fact that it was approved by Herbert himself while he was still alive and that it was published under his supervision and by a close friend of his is a pretty big deal. You cant say the same about the BH books because they were published years after Herbert’s death and we Cannot confirm if they really are based on his notes until the Herbert estate publishes those notes they claim to have. (Also, my personal opinion, I highly doubt the BH books as being based on Herbert’s notes as they are thematically unlike the actual FH books and do not come close to the quality of the original saga. )
I've loved the Dune books since I was a teenager in the '80s. The new Dune movie really does offer an interesting glimpse into this fascinating civilization.
This has to be the most in-depth and interesting coverage on the Sardukar. Kudos!
Love this video! The amount of details and backstory is amazing and really immerse you in the world of Dune. Keep these type of video coming!
Absolutely love the Dune world. The OG Game of Thrones. This was a amazing video and can’t wait for more dune videos

@@NicoBabyman1 "...by then its screen was nothing to me but blinding!"
Real world comparisons for the Sardaukar are the Janissary of the ottoman empire and Preatorian guard of Rome really effective military units in there day but corruption and complaisantcey brought them low
Ot sure that really applies.
The praetorian were shit city troops, too few to ever stand up to an organised army.
Theyd look more like spartans. Which is dumb. Because sparta lost to athen
@@huanquocmanh416 What? Sparta won the Peloponnesian War against Athens. Sparta ultimately lost to Thebes.
Preatorians were politican guards not a military force, hell most of them largely never fought during their time
I can’t wait for Dune part 2.
Same here!
Work trash made by a leftists political activists.
Only a few months now
Just a little more time now!! Gotta be iMAX.
gonna be so good
Exceptional video! I have read a lot of Dune material during the last 20 years, but this documentary showed me many things I didn’t know. It was very informative and beautifully presented!
I can't wait to hear about the Fremen, learning about the Sardaukar, I can hardly imagine Fremen training will have anything close to what the Sardauker possess, not just in regular training too, but their history
The Fremen came from the same planet as the Sardaukar
@@ForageGardener not the same planet
Fremen are from Arrakis, while the Sardukar are from Salusa Secundus, although they're both descendants of the same group of people who visited and settled both Selusa Secundus and Arrakis
The Fremen don’t really “train” so much as they just live in an environment so harsh that anyone who survives it is a badass.
Man this backstory is so cool. I hope we see more of this in the next movie. Especially that senate room with all the different houses
The sardaukar theme is one of the best, they are one of my favorites in dune
As an Atreides commander on Arrakis, I never leave my base without them.
Right , military men shaped by their environment and religion, their like the mamluk warriors of the mid east
Thank you especially for the illustrations, they added some real new lore and depth to my lifelong fascination with Dune's universe
A great breakdown of such a long and complicated history. I knew from reading the books years ago that Secundus was a prison world. I didn't know how it got that way or that the Sardakur were so we'll fleshed out.
I subscribed to your channel exclusively for your lore documentaries. Their production value is unequalled. Please continue to make them.
I’ve always thought dune seemed like a unique era of history, well suited to a history channel
I have re-read the Dune novels a few times, each time they are more enjoyable. And they make all the sci-fi written after and influenced by Dune also more enjoyable. The Sardukar are basically the Space Marines but the make more sense.
They're also basically the Mandalorian crusaders from Star Wars legends. I saw a lot of similarities between them in this video.
40k seems to be unashamedly derivative of Dune. Like it even uses the exact same terms and ideas without even trying to be original
@@rigo-mma If you look at 40k pretty much everything in it is stolen another franchise.
@@AndreTheCrab yeah it’s embarrassing
@@rigo-mma almost every franchise borrows from other stories name one that was completely original
Invicta truly *Spoils* us ! I cannot fathom how I excited to see this upload ! War of the worlds Tripods next maybe
This was an awesome video, really loved how you brought the encyclopedia to life and helped flesh out the Dune universe - this is easily one of the all time greats in contributing to modern Dune lore, well done!
Wow never expecting dune video, can we expect warhammer 40k lore in future ? Your insight and atention to little detail make your video so good.
You may have to dig a bit, but he made some Warhammer videos about a year ago.
This content is amazing and I hope there is more dune content to come. Aside from basically cutting Dr. Kynes to as basic as possible I really enjoyed the new movie and between the dune movies and and the lore videos I finally listened to the audiobook and it’s great. Thank you!
Absolutely wonderful exposition! was wondering what musical tracks were used? Especially the very last one when describing the Fremen.
So they can use their own pretty awesome troops combined with Fremen units and overwhelm the trap that was Arrakis.
great video! where do you find information like this? i’ve read every crazy novel, twice even, and i don’t remember seeing a lot of these detail! specifically the unit breakdowns and traditions stuff.
The vast majority of this is from the Dune Encyclopedia
@@InvictaHistorySo if this presentation is derived from Frank Herbert's writings, please disclose where It says that the first Corrino Emperor was a so-called Sardau tribal king. More likely derived from video game scripting than anything Frank ever wrote. So much here far outside Dune canon.
@@tessierashpoolmg7776 every thing here is better than any of the garbage that BH and KJA wrote
@@therealfakeAlphabet I hope it's obvious that I am referring to Frank Herbert exclusively.
The Dune Encyclopaedia is as unreliable as any other narrator in Dune. Like the bit about Moscow and Washington being rival capitals of the Empire.
Including bits from the games is fine.
6:28 That one made me chuckle. Great video!
Great Video! I would point out that in the Prequel Dune Series Butlerian Jihan that Salusa Secundus was a green world of temperate climate with water but after the atomic bombing in the war against the machines. Salusa Secundus became the world you described.
You guys should break down the key players in full in the Dune universe! Like the Bene Gesserit, Navigators guild, the Tleilexu, the Honored Mattress, etc etc
Damn, some excellent timing. My Gf and I just rewatched the new dune movie last night. Was some excellent info and can't wait for more vids

I'm a fan of the old version of David Lynch's Dune. It's strange that he didn't want to sign it. Greetings!🖖

Just watched the preview this morning. Part 2 looks absolutely incredible
First half I imagined Salusa Secundus as Catachan from WH40k, but by the second half, I now see it as Space Australia from DBZ Abridged! “Go Space Broncos!” :D
Its cool to see something like guardian of the empire being awarded to someone still living, goes to show how elite they truly are, where someone would need to sacrifice their life, the sarduaukar still lives.
please do more fictional units, like some from Warhammer horus heresy would be awesome
I keep coming back to this video only to end it a few minutes in... trying to work my way through all of the Dune series of books. The originals written by Frank Herbert, and the continuation of the series as well as several prelude stories written by Brian Herbert and Kevin Anderson. I must say they both have done an amazing job. I will finish the video when I'm done!
Sardaukar: we are the greatest warrirors in the known universe
Fremen: Laughs at Sardaukar
Fish Speakers: Laughs at both of them
I never got the sense that fish speakers were better than fremen or sardauker. Just that they had a different purpose that an all female army better fulfilled
@@wyattebersole3764 Than you didn’t pay attention, Duncan states multiple times he believes he wouldn’t be able to put up resistance to a fish speaker. The fish speakers would absolutely 100% without a doubt murder the fremen and sardaukar
FS were just a different tool. Sardaukar were the hammer, Fremen the scalpel, FS the spear.
Sardaukar ruled the galaxy for over 8000 years
Fish speakers for over 3000
Fremen didn't even last 100
Clearly, Fremen were most effective and certainly not lucky to fight on their home turf with the support of nuclear weapons and colossal worms
Love the narrating and history lore behind them. Excellent work conveying it.
Rome total war attila soundtrack, love it
Wish Spice Wars was more of a Dune 2000 or Emperor sequel than a paradox Dune game. Great Video though always had a special love for Sardaukar.
Nice to see the Sardaukar having the Brabantian heraldry 😁

"The sardaukar are the greatest warriors of the entire known galaxy"
Fremen women and children being cornered like wild animals :
"Alright well.. they're tied for first at least.."
Still, the Fremen considered the Sardaukar to be good fighters, and respected them to some degree.
I mean, we've seen mothers lift cars for their kids. If Sardaukar can match the space sand folk version of that, I'm impressed
Superb storytelling.
There are interesting parralels between Sardau/Sardaukar and Fremen. Both were hardy cultures from hard worlds, that transformed them into warriors. Both have conquered their worlds and went beyond and helped their leaders to conquer the Known Universe. Both were defeated not in war, but in peace, grew complavent and polluted by ideas of "weaker" people. I wonder, who will the new warrior tribe in future of Dune.
Agree totally, and as Herbert influences Lucas,I believe the latter's Mandalorians were his answer to the Sardaukar/Fremen. 👍
@@MrSinclairn Good point! I don't believe, that Lucas had much to do with Mandalorians. But it's possible, that Karen Treviss made this paralell

Awesome, I love the Dune Books, and Movies! That includes Lynch, Scifi and Villeneuve
Lynch did good with the tech they had but the sardukar were a disappointment
@@jonathancox1231 Yeah you’re right the Sardaukar soldiers weren’t really impressive or memorable, I liked the Generals of Shaddam in Lynch movie though, just little details like metal plates covering scars and “worn down” look on their faces, can’t wait for Christopher Walken as the Emperor, that will be amazing. But I think Villeneuve messed up Harkonnen soldiers, not even sure I remember what they look like except for Rabban (who was improvement over Lynch). Scifi channel movies had very cool take on the Harkonnens, looks like mix of Samurai with leathery firemen uniforms or something, looked very cool at least from costume standpoint. And this is where I will give huge props to Lynch, everything in the movie was made from scratch, every single prop/item, which makes the setting more unique than i.e other scifi where everything looks the same just more glowy and sanitized.

The Sardaukar were such a powerful force, their attack changed the shape of arrows at 7:15
By the time the sardukar possessed kinetic shielding they would not have possessed laser based weaponry anymore, as it's very much the invention of such shielding that led to kinetic based weaponry returning in force, and melee weapons staying relevant, as a laser based weapon firing on one of those shields is akin to setting off multiple nuclear bombs simultaneously, and why such weaponry became mutually illegal across space, it would kill everyone involved.
This is also why stutter fire and the specific martial skills for slowing one's swing to pass through the shielding to return momentum was so important.
