I used to use MacBook without screen protector, overtime there will be a permanent keyboard mark on the display that can't wipe off, and dust can also scratch the display, so I always put screen protector on every MacBook i buy
You're not wrong as the oils from your fingers on the keys will come in contact with the screen over the years. However it is quite easy to prevent. My 2018 MBP has zero screen marks as I clean the keyboard with an IPA wipe most days and the screen at least every couple of days. Takes 20 seconds and just helps take the oil off the keys so it can't build up over time on the screen. You don't have to do it every day obviously but once or twice a week is fine, I am just a bit of a clean freak 😂
Try putting a thin microfiber cloth between the keys and the display when you close the laptop. I haven't gotten any screen damage ever since I started doing it with my new mac. Also depends on the screen protector quality, it may affect the display like the anti glare coating and contrast ratio.
I've always used the incase hardcasees sold in the apple store and never had an issue in over a decade on several macbooks. Like you said the laptop hinge can easily handle the weight of an iPhone for Continuity Camera plus it's sold in the apple store and has all the cut outs for the vents, etc. My rule of thumb is if apple sell it in the store then I am not gonna worry myself about if it's okay to use or not. There is a reason apple doesn't sell things like screen protectors and keyboard covers but do sell that specific hardshell case.
I recently bought my first Laptop Macbook Air M2 🎉 but I wasn't unable to clean display and I was getting scratches on sides 😭 So, at the end should I use tge cover for my mac or not?
I'm rocking MBA M1. Been using hard case + screen protector + keyboard cover for 1 year plus now and they work perfectly on my mac. As a result I can wipe my screen with any cloth and not get fingers smudges and I can rest assured that nothing will get under my keyboard. Definitely recommended.
Big thanks for the kind words, that‘s some great feedback! It‘s nice to hear someone appreciate the last tagline (I cut it out a few times as I thought most people don‘t see it anyways), so this means a lot!
About the camera cover one, on older macs and with other laptops, I believe it is possible to circumvent the camera indicator turning on when the camera turns on. With the M4 chip though, it's much harder to do this since it's hardware based starting with that generation. As for the keyboard cover, you could try putting a THIN microfiber cloth between the keys and the display. I've been doing this for years and have never encountered an issue. From a 2015 MBP to a 2017 MBA to a 2022 M2 MBP, I've never had issues with the display cracking from having a keyboard cover and a cloth between keyboard and screen.
Have hardshells my both my M1 Pro MBP and M2 Air. Don’t regret at all. They prevent damage-they don’t lead to damage. You are correct on getting a correctly configured case for vent ports.
Firstly, I gotta tell you that I really love and appreciate your videos; thank you and keep them coming more frequently. Now almost everything that you mentioned in this video, my wife was guilty of doing and I kept telling her about these very same warnings. She has since stopped using these products but it's good to let her hear it from someone else. Thanks.
Thanks for this video Vince. For the hard case part, I stopped using it because it makes my m2 air heavier and I got this feeling that its bad for the hinge. The keyboard protector, so far i does not make any marks on the screen, 2 years of having it. Just use laptop sleeve when not using it, For me youre good to go.
Thanks for watching! Yep, you're right, I also dislike a case because it adds too much bulk. Good to hear your screen protector hasn't left any marks. Have an amazing day!
3:39 😂. Also this is such a well researched and legit video. When I bought my first MacBook Air almost an year back, I had similar questions: whether to buy a case or not, or a keyboard cover, etc. Macbooks are expensive machines, and I really wanted to minimize the wear and tear of the paint material to keep it looking fresh for longer. Especially since I got the mignight colour coz it is pretty but also notorious for fingerprints and scratches. I had never used a case on laptops before, needless to say i was confused and I could not afford to buy something I wouldn't use. I saw most youtubers including Apple Explained advising against the use of a case, stating hinge problems, but a few of the reasons they stated for how those cases damaged hinges were not making much sense. The cases mostly weigh in the range of 5-10gms, and if Apple made the lid even a mm thicker it would easily weigh 10gms more. I don't think the hinges are that weak and it is highly unlikely that apple engineered hinges for lid weights that are very very precisely equal to that of the current macbooks. Also compare 5gms that to easily over 200 gms of an iPhone being used as a continuity camera. Some people opined that continuity camera would be used once in a while but the case is always on the lid. Again the reasoning is not perfect. An iPhone is easily 30 times heavier than a case and if 5gm of an evenly distributed weight could cause damage then pretty sure a >200gm block of weight also could that too, easily, even if used occasionally. Plus Apple never advised us about the frequency of continuity camera usage. I also found Apple sold cases on their us website. The 2nd line of reasoning was much more believable. The case could certainly interfere with the opening and closing of lid and that could certainly damage the hinges. So when i got the case, I checked if there is no obstruction to opening or closing of the lid. The case fit beautifully and I was happy with the purchase. I also bought a cleaning kit which consisted of a non alchohol and non ammonia cleaning solution, a brush and a microfiber cloth. Now after almost an year, my Mac still feels like new. It still has 101% battery health (yup 101%😆). Just like it was brand new. I almost always use it plugged in but at the same time limit the charge to a recommended 65 percent, using Aldente. The charge cycle count is at 10.
fully agree with all of these! they all get in the way of the lid closing and the hinge worsening, and the keyboard cover is also just flimsy and unsatisfying.
only channel with Mac content i trust 🙏🏻 can you please suggest me which liquid should i use to clean mac screen and its keyboard , thanks in advance .
Thanks man! Means a lot! I'd only wipe it with water, or even better distilled water - personally, I wouldn't use any cleaners. However, if it doesn't get much cleaner with water, there are some cleaners out there made for displays. Whoosh! is the cleaning solution that Apple employees use in its stores, so that could be good. Oh, and also: Don’t clean the screen with a cleaner containing acetone. Don’t use window cleaners, household cleaners, aerosol sprays, solvents, ammonia, abrasives, or cleaners containing hydrogen peroxide to clean the screen. (from Apple Support website)
@@macvince CAPES skins are 0.5mm thick. What about the inner side skins (around keyboard and over trackpad) that is included in 'Max' coverage? Can it damage screen or leave any marks over long time? Was just about to buy it for 14 inch M4 pro MacBook pro.

bei den Drittanbieter Ladegeräten... gehören USB-C Monitore auch dazu? Ich hab mein MacBook halt immer an der Docking Station, am LG monitor der eben über USBC alles bepowered
Yeah I used an incase hard shell case (same one you have) and it caused my hinge to make a noise, requiring me to unscrew the bottom to fix it. Do not use any MacBook case Also if you just wash your hands before using your keyboard it will never turn shiny.
If you carry your Macbook in a backpack, as most people do, your back or other thing inside the backpack will push on the screen lid. This will cause contact between screen surface and keyboard (or worse, the metal part between keyboard and touchpad). I had such situation in my '21 MBP16". There were marks from lower part of keyboard and the metal part. Therefore I highly recommend using a very thin piece of microfibre cloth and put it on topcase before closing the laptop. I do it on my new M4 Max 16" and it's safe. There is no risk as the cloth is very thin. There are ones on Aliexpress made for 14" or 16" laptops.
Never happened to me personally, but I‘ve read some reports of that! Interesting to hear your experience. And sure, a thin cloth should be totally fine. Thanks for watching!
I ordered a Mac and plan on putting some stickers on it. Do you recommend a cover first? I’ve also read on Reddit the hinge issue that’s why I never ordered a hard case. I did however order a tomtoc case that perfectly fits my Mac so I’m also unsure if a case will prohibit its use with the sleeve. Thank you!
Personally, I think a sleeve should be fine, never had any issues using my MacBook without a case. Feels much more premium tbh, and your stickers will look much better :D
Honestly, with my expirience, none of these are required. I've been using my 2020 M1 Macbook Pro for 5 years (without any cases or screen protectors, and it has survived SO MANY drops without a single sign of damage except for some very very minor dents on the edges. (It has also survived being thrown on the floor with force just fine). I don't know how the newer, thicker Macbooks are just as sturdy, but with my model, no accessories are required (except for an adaptor because I only have 2 usb-c ports without it 🤦♂).
@ I have two glasses, there is a private one, there is an anti-glare. I usually change them, since the magnetic glasses are removable, I bought both for $ 10. Macbook Model: M3 Pro 14”
@ Definitely, such glass has advantages over ordinary glass, which is glued, and the anti-glare coating does not wear off. It also protects well from keyboard traces.
About the cases I can tell you that it did harm my macbook's hinge, so I just sticked Transperent skin ( Sticker ), so far 2 years doing a great job by protecting it from fingerprints
