Teen Titans meets The Hunger Games meets No Logical Consistency
Honestly, the idea of Terra becoming a legitimate superhero sounds interesting. They did that later in Young Justice and I enjoyed it.
The erasure of the Teen Titans from New-52 always baffled me. ‘But they didn’t erase them, Linkara IS reviewing the book here’. Yet what is the most famous and beloved version of the Titans? The Wolfman and Perez era, and yet… DC erased them for a very bizarre and very dark and nasty version. You’d think, given the New-52 loved to pretend that everything happened but didn’t, you could just do the teen titans animated series with Robin, Cyborg, Starfire, Raven, and Beast Boy… but hey, cyborg is in the JL, Starfire is being written as a weird ass sex toy for men, Nightwing was busy being a Batman character for all his crossovers, and Raven and Beast Boy… were busy being drawn terribly.
If we concentrated all of Linkara's most hated comics together, we could use the hatred to power the eastern seaboard.

I was actually wondering recently why Linkara hasn't done a compilation of The Culling reviews yet.
SPOILERS FOR WHAT HAPPENS TO HARVEST:
He ended up getting killed, resurrected by Stormwatch shenanigans, tells Superboy he's an abomination... only for his VERY next appearance to have him dead AGAIN even worse than before, implying that Superboy did it... but it's not investigated further.
Yeah, the writers wanted harvest gone as much as we do.
Good to know SOMONE at DC listens to their fans.
Can someone on Patreon request that one? I just want to hear more of Linkara's amazing Harvest voice. That or DC should make more terrible stories with Harvest just to Linakra has to review them.
Also, I kinda wish Linkara had pulled a George Lucas and redone all of Harvest's lines in that wonderfully silly voice. My pwan is gweat!
@@maxxjapan619technically speaking he did reappear in the terrible dc you era teen titans for one issue and then disappear and never came back, also was the creator of new 52 Superboy which was also dumb on so many levels it ain’t even funny.
Shame, really a waste of a great character design. Would have loved to see him in a videogame, like as a fighter in Injustice.

Remember. The Batman Who Laughs got trapped in Fortnite. And since the lore for that game is over. That means there's a chance that he's gone forever.
to be fair harvest got killed in red hood and the outlaws rebirth which was so satisfying in my opinion.
At least the Batman Who Laugh's plan made a modicum of sense, was built on established lore and plot points in previous books, and you could go back through the comic and see the steps taken for it. Not saying it was good, but Harvest is just on another level of stupid.

Am I the only one who thinks that the main villain of graduation day being just a malfunctioning robot is incredibly underwhelming.
Along with the fact that the malfunctioning robot joined the Outsiders (lame) only to be a danger to them cuz Brainiac shenanigans. Just nothing more than a filler character to cause problems or hijack the story/characters and then become non-existent til a crossover next tuesday... and NOBODY WILL CARE cuz status quo is the a commandment of comicbook writing.
Yeah i say Linkara takes it well when explaining how he feels about the new 52. 😁

I actually started reading the then-current Deadpool series after Linkara mentioned he was reading it. I got hooked big time, and now Wade's one of my favorite comic book characters.

Funny how Outsiders crossed over with America's Most Wanted in the 2000s. While Deadpool would later get a comic featuring the return of BRUTE FORCE.

Thank you for compiling this. I've been wanting to watch these well-deserved savagings of the New 52 in general and how it treated the Titans in particular. This brings them all into one place.
Also, when this came out, I *was* a 45-year-old, and all the New 52 did was *stop* me from buying comics after nearly 40 years of doing so continuously.

One of the fun parts of these reuploads is rediscovering jokes that I forgot because I hadn't watched the episodes recently. For example, that incredibly subtle opener.
The people in The Colony could have just asked Raven for help. Her powers would have been able to destroy the damn shield. Don't ask how they would be able to summon her in there to ask her to get them out of there.
I did read the follow-ups at some point. I read Harvest's parts out loud, in that voice. Only thing that makes it tolerable.

I mean, that line sums everything up entirely by accident.
Glaring oversights?
The only possible reasons I could see that someone would want to work for Harvest would be if they were a sadist, or it was a "join me or die" situation.
Also another problem with the new 52 teen titans is that series did so much damage to all the characters especially to Tim drake robin fans like myself that it took basically a miracle to undo the damage to his character, which i was so happy rebirth was doing that and fixing his character until recently another writer came in and destroyed his character again for garbage at least in my opinion.
I'm just imagining one of the writers for the World Of Warcraft expansion Shadowlands taking one look at Harvest and going:
"Yeah, that's the kind of villain we need."
Is the villain invincible to a ridiculous extent and going "I totally planned this" every 5 minutes?
Oh, I recognize that synapsid! Beast Boy turned into a gorgonopsid, a sort of proto-mammalian version of a mountain lion.
Saw a complaint the other day that New 52 Teen Titans tried to arbitrarily introduce Doom Patrol elements. Was reminded of that when I saw there starter enemies were NOWHERE.
Wait, if every so often everyone is either killed or made a Ravager, how can there be anyone around to tell newcomers how things work? Presumably after every combat there would be no one left.
Also, why are there some people in mostly normal, if shabby, clothing (eg Artemis) and others in Tronwear?

The comment about the team-up with John Walsh and America's Most Wanted is extra amusing because Walsh and AMW just got revived a month or so ago.
11:54 Same for Haley's Circus. The YJ cartoon made it sound like Dick Grayson's first home he's always welcome back at, and the Batman comics lading up to the "Night of the Owls" crossover (which was good, IMO) revealed the Circus was actually a training ground for Talons, the assassins for the Court of Owls.
Linkara has said he doesn’t do the overly angry review thing anymore, however I genuinely think this one is not performative - This is what actual frustration sounds like.
I got that from his Graduation Day review more since there he sounded and looked more genuinely angry.

Although thinking about it I can see The culling also making him have genuine anger since how the New 52 was back then.
After seeing other channels, that’s appreciated. Forced anger just gets annoying after a while.
Glad to see another all in one video. Though I'm going to miss hearing the ballad of cotton eye joe (Update 2:48:08 and yeah. Said it before. But I still wonder if making Dick more of a jerk was trying to soften the blow of his planned demise in Infinite Crisis)
I love how all the compilations usually have a theme like all the silent hill reviews, the blue beetle retrospective, Nightmare on Elm Street etc. I also love how this one’s theme is “here are two godawful Teen Titans related storylines I had to review, enjoy!” lol (I’m not being sarcastic I genuinely love this compilation)

You know... I just realised Harvest's whole gimmick would have made sense (vaguely) if it turned out he was *just* a power thief.
He had a reaper gimmick, his name was harvest, he had a bizarre plethora of powers, and he arranged pointless fights where alot of weak superhero died en masse. If it turned out he was just able to steal the powers of dead supers and the rest was just a smokescreen that would have made *way* too much sense.
Or he’s trying to weed them out so he can steal the best powers

Harvest was so bad they killed him in Red Hood and The Outlaws and that's basically it for him.
New 52 Teen Titans: did a lot of damage to Tim Drake's generation of heroes and as a result modern writers don't know how to write nor how to approach their characters in the current comics and media (animation & live action)
One could make the argument that characters like Connor Cassie and Bart Allen have gained a lot more focus in recent years and their characters have been better written as of late in current comics
The same cannot be said about Tim Drake and how his character has been mistreated by writers in both comics, animation and live action
I mean his character has been killed off multiple times, barely focused on and sometimes ignored and just doesn't exist
ArkhamVerse and Injustice 2 games and comics being the two biggest examples of his character being poorly written and killed off for shock value
Titans and YJ two examples of his character being poorly written barely given much focus by the writers and given one of the most uninteresting character arcs in both shows
DCAMU is one of the first examples of his character not existing in universe and they're only being two Robins.
The writing of the new 52 Teen Titans along with the poor characterization of each member is what really makes this one of the worst Teen Titans comic book runs of all time
I also feel that because of how bad this run of the Teen Titans was is why Tim Drake's generation of heroes barely gets any focus in mainstream media anymore due to how much of a failure this push for their characters was in The New 52
Especially looking at their characters today and how current writers seem very disinterested in their characters and how a lot of the writing for them has been mid.
It's also frustrating for fans whose favourite Robin is Tim Drake.... (myself included)
The New 52 did Tim so dirty, especially when Scott Lobdell wrote him (like Lobdell brushing aside the fact that Red Hood tried to murder Tim out of Jealousy and was instead "The Closest thing to a Brother he ever had").
The worst thing is Tim outside of the comics prior to new 52, had gotten nothing but shafted time and time again by every version trying to turn him into some other character, Batman TAS made him Jason Todd, Arkham City/Knight made him the most generic edgy Robin with Damian's outfit, Titans made him Duke Thomas, it's sad when the most accurate version is Lego Batman 1-3

The new 52 Teen Titans is by far one of the worst runs in Titans comic history, this whole reboot was a massive and critical failure and was rejected by many many fans.
There were only two or three lines that worked the flash and the green lantern stuff though they had the highs and their lows as well

@jordanreed3675 Demon Knights, Earth 2, Swamp Thing, Dial H for Hero and Animal Man were also good New 52 books, partly because they were mostly disconnected from the main setting of The New 52.

Honestly, the writers for Culling should have Harvest mind-control the winners. Would make the Ravagers leaving make much more sense, along with the other heroes turn villains in this mini-series being able to be heroic again afterwards.
Graduation Day is a lot like Batman War Games and Heroes in Crisis in where DC decides to kill off a fan favorite hero (Spoiler in War Games and Arsenal in Heroes in Crisis) just for shock value when in reality, it ended up pissing off a lot of fans. Plus both stories suffered from character assassination, characters being unlikeable as they constantly argue with one another, a series of nonsense and plot holes and an anti climatic ending. I wonder if Linkara will do a 15 things wrong with Batman War Games.

The new 52 Teen titans and the culling as a whole was just bad and proves my point more and more that dc really screwed up the teen titans badly really badly, to the point that it took basically rebirth to retcon all of this garbage from new 52 teen titans and erase it ever happened. Which for me i was happy about because lets face it this series was beyond salvageable to the point that, ignoring this terrible team even existed was the best option for everybody at least in my opinion. Also to make it even sadder new 52 destroyed both superboy and Bart Allen kid flash to the point that they had erase both versions of these busted characters and pretend they didn't exist at least in my opinion. Which personally for me I would've been fine with that if it meant i got to see both my boy Jonathan Samuel Kent superboy as his little 10 year old self meeting his uncle Conner Kent superboy and being great friends and learning how to be a team together would've been freaking fantastic and adorable at least in my opinion. :)
I feel that the New52 was making many mistakes akin to Marvel's Ultimate universe.
Being harder, edgier, blunter and just sleazier page after page while probably one or two comic line-ups doing a Herculean/ Atlas team up carrying the load of awful just to keep the reader's interest.

Hate villains like harvest. It's like that one kid playing pretend on the playground but can't accept loss so just makes up reasons he's invincible.
They just didn't care!!! 😮. I love that clip. Honestly when I first got back into comics after a long hiatus, I had started with geoff johns teens Titan book you showed. I thought it was good but I do remember being slightly confused because they referenced allot of how previous Members died and such like Donna troy...it's painful to see after these reviews now years later how dumb the culling and graduation day was glad I skipped those 😅

I finally realize what bothers me about the art. Where is the light coming from? Are they backlit? Frontlit? Is it omnipresent? The shading doesn't work, the lighting makes no sense.
...Also no one seems to be looking at eachother... are these characters traced?

Anyone remember that magical villain Harvest who gathered life force from those who hurt children? I really would have liked to see her taking her tithe from this whacko.
Robots or whatever announcing its actions like that may make more sense if it's for recording and archiving like a black box in case someone needs look up on its history to find sources for glitches or whatever... though admittedly, that's not without holes either.

Another comics content creator, The PandaRedd, asked if his viewers preferred pre or post New 52 Dick Grayson's personality, DickWing vs. Mom Friend Dick. If Graduation Day is any indication, I'll take Mom Friend any day. Nightwing's crankiness has no purpose beyond creating conflict and being grumpy. No thanks.
Harvest would have been a great place to use Starlord's shut up speech from Vol.3.

Thanks goodness the story and Omen's death have been wiped from canon thanks to the New 52 and Rebirth. In my opinion, for something that trashy, insulting and unnecessary, it's better for it to have NEVER happened at all than be acknowledged and reversed.
I think Ravagers would be a pretty good villain team name imo
Christy Marx’s revamp of Princess Amethyst was great, showing that not *everything* in 2011’s reboot was bad.
That was a Book Linkara Liked (he mentioned it in his 3 Part Future's End Review).

Linkara, I can’t remember if you’ve talked about this before but what do you think of Tim being Red Robin? For me, sure the name is lame but I appreciate that the costumes (pre and post flashpoint) were more unique than his suits post dc rebirth. Now he’s just another Robin which feels like a devolution for Tim.
'd think if you wanted to get new readers you'd do a few things. Tie into popular media at the time (like TV shows and movies more often). And have self contained stories. So someone can pick up a comic, know what's going on, get a complete story, and feel satisfied by it.
Instead of what both Marvel and DC have both decided of "... lets wipe away the legacy and then make things overly complicated instead. It's the legacy that's the fault. Not overly complicated long messes of storylines, events, and lore dumps."

He never did it; he just threw shade at it a few times in the first few years of this show.
I have to ask given the list of books that you do like on this list. Did you read Swamp Thing or Animal Man from the New 52? Both books took characters that I knew existed and actually made me look forward to the next issue and back during the first few months of the relaunch that was saying something. Seriously, Catwoman #1 is still one of the most "what the hell" books I have ever read.
I did. They're among what precious few books hold up, even across a creative change like what Swamp Thing got.
Does anyone know what happenend to Skitter? Not just in the culling, but her character as a whole? I remember reading the culling when it first came out, and I feel like she simply walked off the set and no one bothered.
Pretty much. She came back for the conclusion of the New 52 Teen Titans along with Harvest in a story that screams of "This was all supposed to happen later" and AFAIK has never been seen since.
Sounds about right. I remember reading a few new 52 titles (including Teen Titans) and they just never mentioned her again.
Which honestly sounds pretty par for the course for the New 52. God that reboot/relaunch was so bad.

It’s a new video and new chance to ask why do people hate new 52 superboy like the poor kid is a victim of circumstance with the changes when fundamentally he seems like any other superboy only no Lex Luthor was involved.

I mean, they did shorten his name as Ty, and I don't think it's pronounced Tea.
Fun reviews, but kind of weird to pair these two up in a compilation video. Outside of them both being bad Teen Titans comics, there's nothing really linking them all.
That's really the connective tissue. I don't like the compilations being less than 2 hours long, as well.
What I've gathered so far (and yes, I'm updating this shit, even if I lack the moves of Ninja Style Dancer):
1) Next conspiracy "theory": the USA sent covid to the past.... *SOMEHOW*...
2) Beast Boy had to go through Don't Hug Me I'm Scared.
3) This Harvest dude loves Dr Halsey... but he loves Chief Mendez even more...
4) Is the time teaveler robot chick a Number? Man, gotta tell Rata he memed Numeronius support into existance.
5) Identical canon fodder? a _Plasma_ (Electro) magnetic Pulse? (And as we saw earlier, children abducted and tested on to be murder machines)
With this level of Covenant tech reverse engineered already I should wonder if "The Culling" was intended as the original pitch for the Halo paramount show (My God).
Surprised the clip of you complaining about how Red Arrow was written better than Nightwing in Graduation Day isn't in here
