I saw someone compare the 4 top a capella groups with a high school: PTX is Student Council, Home Free is the group in the parking lot comparing their hot car engines, Voice Play is the Drama Dept, and Voctave is the high level Choir Class. I think that explains them all quite well. 🤗 💞

Vikings and Pirates oh my. The length that Geoff can hold his low notes is amazing. Our patron's monies are well spent in the making of these videos.

Added bonus info, Eli apparently created all these backgrounds himself in Unreal Engine. Ridiculously talented guys. Also... Geoff.

Really enjoyed your reaction to this, it's nice to hear a positive response. I've seen quite a few people saying it's not one of their favourites but I really like it. Geoffs rich background vocals and Laynes percussion are glue that holds everyone together letting the other vocals shine.

This is so fantastic it was my absolute favourite before Hoist the Colours dropped! You're right about Geoff's background vocal keeping the sound strong. Layne kills the beatboxing on this one & it's good to see Eli's evil twin. VP always make great videos even if they're not in costume there's always a lot of attention to detail. It amazes me how they do everything themselves 🇬🇧

I saw someone say that Eli looks and sounds like he's worshipping an evil god and that Geoff IS the evil god. LOL

They are doing stomps and claps along with the beat boxing throughout, they just only alluded to it in the video rather than showing it all the time

Eli did the computer backgrounds for each character. I love how you can hear the fire crackling in Geoff's opening set.

Great fun reaction to this, as always with you.
Geoff's bass when he isn't on lead becomes the undercurrent which adds weight to the tenor and baritone parts and provides a beautiful foundation sinking underneath the melody to ground and support the lead vocals, just like a bass guitar or piano does in instrument backed music.
"Hoist the Colours" does a primo job of showing that support structure in their music. I find that if I listen to the karaoke tracks (on their Patreon), it makes the harmonies and counter harmony so much easier to pick apart and appreciate; then, when going back to the finished track, I hear so much more of the nuances which add to the atmosphere and support the leads.

Great blending. Geoff is sometimes hard to make out when he's back in the mix, but you would notice right away if it cut out.

The same is true of the bass in a rock band - absolutely essential.

This whole song is epic. Geoff and Layne carry the beat and heart of the song while Eli is magic with highlights especially when it's his evil twin singing. J and Jose just fill the group and make it all work

Wonderful video. You must check out Hoist the Colours from Pirates of the Caribbean. Their cover is awesome, Geoff arranged it, Eli did the lighting effects.

Look at it this way…bass is the foundation upon which the rest of the music is built!

When you have a bass that hits E1 without breaking a sweat and a high tenor that hits C5 with the same ease the spread makes for incredible harmonies. Saw a comment that was so right. Layne: hey, we need Odin's war horn in this. Geoff: hold my mead.

In all of these a capella groups there's a need for them to have a strong bass to help anchor the song with the beatboxer. It's harder to appreciate the mids and the highs if you don't have the lows to compare it to.

I get what you said, it's really impossible to ignore Geoff's bass, even when his voice isn't the focus.

He's imitating a viking warhorn, specifically Heimdall's Gjallerhorn, the sounding of which will alert all those on Azgard that the battle of Ragnarok has begun. There isn't really a modern equivalent to this (and I don't like pointing out the one they use at the minnesota vikings games because I think it's cheesy, and they're not that deep anyway unless they're ridiculously large) If you look a few up, (just search norse blowing horns) you'll find the tone can range from a high pitched reedy sound to a 'high' baritone. All of them are acoustically nice and will echo for miles if you're in the right spot...like...in a valley in the middle of Sweden in the winter with mountains on either side to channel the sound....but I'm guessing you don't live in a valley in the middle of Sweden in the winter with mountains on either side to channel the sound. Oh well. I think wider audiences became enamored with the hugeass horn version blowing this incredibly deep bass sound because despite there being no animal large enough to produce a horn of that size (Heimdall's came from....the cow...uh...giant...yak cow thingie...starts with an M and I'm not looking it up dammit...comes from a mythical cow that started the human race so it's huge) after the Lord of the Rings: Two Towers came out and had the scene of Gimli sounding the Horn of Helm's Deep. And that was straight up FRIGGIN AWESOME AND YES MORE OF THAT PLEASE. So is it historically accurate? No, but neither is the Vikings show for the most part. Is it cool? Hell yes.
But you know, if we ever do find ourselves standing on the bifrost at Ragnarok with the enemies of Azgard are running straight at us, screaming and waving implements of massive, bloody destruction, I will totally grab Geoff Castallucci, shove a megaphone into his hands and tell him to go for it. .....course then I'd probably use him as a human shield, but that applies to everybody, so....
