VoicePlay do throw themselves into their roles. And because not many people will mention it, they do some amazing renditions of Disney stuff (like Moana) which showcase their range, humour and talent really well. Even if you're not a Disney fan. (I've got a 4 year old who had Moana on repeat for about six months. I'm still hearing it in my sleep). Take care x
This is a great Haunting song the guys are doing. Can't complain about any part of this song. They are all amazing. I love the fact that VoicePlay and Home Free are really great and appreciate each other. VoicePlay has invited Tim several times to do songs with them, Oh and Rob also. This is what I like so much about how the acapella groups do. They do different kinds of music and enjoy each others music. No competition between them. VoicePlay is theatrical and Home Free is so country and Pentatonix has their kind of music. So many groups out there that are very good. Straight No Chaser is another group that is worth checking out also. Thanks for a great reaction.
I've noticed that reactors with actual music backgrounds- vocal coaches and music teachers, opera singers and composers- are always impressed by VoicePlay's vocal technique, their arrangements and mixing, and other creative choices. It's only the few who run their channels purely on opinion and/or snark, and without much actual interest in anything other than building up their own popularity, that seem to fail to at least recognize the intense level of difficulty in these performances, even if it isn't to their personal taste. As you said, different tastes, but it seems most discerning palates appreciate what VoicePlay brings to the table. (Damn, I didn't expect to be able to carry that metaphor any distance!) Anyhoo, what I'd suggest you to look at next would be their cover of the Halo Theme. It's a piece of music that will blow you out of your chair, and then the message at the end will give you a glimpse of who they are, and what this music means to them.
I absolutely agree. I also love Voice Plays version of The Dragonborn Come featuring Omar. It is a song from the video game The Dragonborn Come. Geoff's low bass notes at the beginning will blow you away.
If you like haunting "medieval" music like this, Geoff has his own channel. he does "Misty Mountains Cold" from the Hobbit. It is set in the dwarven caves. He sings all the parts himself. It has all the feels. Love hearing your take on these videos. Not everyone needs a degree in music to appreciate it. Thank you.
I absolutely love your reactions, and I’m so glad you did this song because it’s one of my favorites. Another great one the do is Warriors! You should also check out Geoff Castelucci’s solo channel. My favorite cover he does is High and Dry. Thanks for the entertainment!!!
I thought I saw so many recommendations for this in your comments! 😀 I'm glad you did this, it's so great! I think you'd really like their cover of "Warriors", with J None and Layne on the violin. J None was their previous baritone, he left the group in May this year. You got him confused with Cesar, who joined them in August this year. I recommend Geoff's newest too, of course, "God rest you merry gentlemen"
As you trip down the path of a cappella you might want to watch some of their solo works that all of them do from HF, PTX, and Voice Play. You will really see the depth of all these singers talents.
Layne: Hey! It would be cool to write in Odin's war horn for this. Geoff: Hold my mead. My other favorite fan comment: Eli looks and sounds like he's worshiping the dark gods. Geoff IS the dark god. LOL Had a thought when you made the ESPN comment. VoicePlay does a short medley of theme music for different channels that you'd like.
VoicePlay is a lot of fun. I think you would really dig their “ACA Top 10 Movie Themes” featuring your spirit animal, Rob. I would suggest also “Warrior”. Lane is multitalented and the video shows a bit of that. So glad you discovered these vocal groups and are sharing them and your personality with us. :)
Not the newest member. You are getting that Layne is the vocal percussionist and the man you don’t recognize is J None their former baritone who left to join the US Navy chorus. Their newest member is Cesar. Both Cesar and J None (as a guest) recently appeared in the video “I Friends on the Other Side”. Thanks for your reaction.
Voiceplay's members can be a bit confusing as they only have had 3 "permanent" band members over the years. You might come across Earl (big strong guy with very high tenor voice) he left them last year but has been with them from the start. J.None (the black guy in this video) left this year. Cesar is the new baritone (the guy with the blind eye in the pirate video). And if you see some old videos you might come across Tony Wakim who now runs a production company with Layne called Patty Cake Productions. Since they are 1 member short currently(high tenor) they feature guest artists while waiting for a 5th member.
Lol, yeah that first bass drop gets everyone upon their first viewing of this video. It kinda gets you in the gut. Glad you liked this one and loved your reaction! 😊
For Christmas themed VoicePlay songs, you could go for the calm and beautiful in "O Little Town of Bethlehem" (with Geoff and Eli on lead, so beautiful!) and "O Holy Night" (feat. Rachel Potter who was also in Wicked). "Baby it's cold outside" is a bit jazzier and great! For the more "in character" VociePlay, one recommendation is "You're a Mean One Mr Grinch". For "crazy ideas" VoicePlay, I recommend "Mission: Jingle Bells"...
My first VP exposure was Geoff only doing Monster Mash (my favorite Halloween song) followed by this one. I was hooked. Everything they do is incredible. Do a reaction to The Dragonborn Comes Skyrim, Man in the Mirror, Friends on the Other Side, Queen in 5 Minutes. There is a live session they did Sing Off which is called Road Trip which is really funny. If you want to learn a bit more technique, The Charismatic Voice and Peter Barber are both excellent Reaction and Analysis.
I love this song! The beautiful chocolate fellow is J. None. He recently left to go sing for the US navy. Cesar replaced him. Voice play does a lot with costumes and a lot in just plain clothes. You can’t go wrong with them. Check out their cover of True Colors and warriors and can’t help falling in love with you! Their cover of bridge over troubled waters is beautiful too! 🔥🥰♥️🔥
Check out their cover of I got friends on the other side. That one had J None and Caesar in it. Check out their cover of Halo theme song they dedicated to a friend who past away this year!
So, along the same lines, mood-wise, as this and Hoist the Colours, you might consider reacting to Avi Kaplan’s “Change on the Rise.” I frequently hear reactors say that it should be part of a Viking soundtrack, so I think you might enjoy it!
I can only imagine watching their videos (or Home Free) through a surround sound system and literally (LOL) feel their voices. Hopefully the speakers could handle such low notes.
The bell tones building the chords draw you in! You need to make a long list for future VP reactions. Include Queen in 5 minutes, Bang, Butter, If I were a Rich man, warrior, ALL the aca-Top 10s, their Disney medleys...just scroll through their whole playlist. Then start with Geoff's separate channel playlist. 👍😁
I recommend this. Jose is in Chicago's Hamilton production. The guy you missed is J. None who left to join the Navy this past June. He did come back on his first leave and did Friends On The Otherside, a mini, Remember Me and Halloween Singers go Psycho. Headphones are a requirement when lessening to VoicePlay or Geoff. The new guy to the group is Cesar De La Rosa.
The black man is J None (baritone) in one of his last performances with them before leaving to join the US Navy. When he was on leave, he rejoined them for Friends on the Otherside for their Halloween song. It's a MUST SEE.
Ahhhh. Death Wish Coffee (Odin/Valhalla) was an appropriate choice for this morning. This song makes you feel like you're up for a spot of light pillaging after listening to it. I mean, if Geoff and his bass haven't rattled your bones to powder, which is always a possibility. I really like that you're getting into VoicePlay. I like VP and Home Free probably equally the most, but it's because I always walk away from their songs feeling something positive: energized, giggly, lifted up, what-have-you -- they're musical serotonin. If you want to check out some reactors with a lot of musical knowledge who dig VoicePlay and Home Free, try 307 Reacts. Love those guys. And when you get around to it, I second the recommendations for Avi Kaplan's solo "Change on the Rise". It's got the same kind of vibe as this. Great reaction; thoroughly enjoyed it!
Good reactors for Voiceplay if you haven’t seen em are King Family reacts and Qofyreacts (well, correction, they are great for any of the a cappella groups if ya want those second opinions)
Voiceplay does so many different "kinds" of music that everyone will love something, but people are typically fascinated with Geoff's low notes, Eli's rocker style and Layne's percussion et all.
This is one of my favorite of them, they are incredible. They are very theatrical so maybe that is what some people dont like, but even if you dont like them you cant denie their talent that is impressive
Yeah I don't understand how somebody doesn't like them. Even if it's not their kind of music it's mesmerizing. That Bass is just it comes from the bottom of his feet all the way up. That's the only way I can describe it it's just awesome. All of them are very great. Thank you for having a reaction to them. I have not heard anything about them until your Channel. So thank you again. I can't say for sure but the bass singer looks like he was the bass on Home Free. I could be wrong he just reminds me of their bass person.
This is the first video I watched you react to back in April. And have returned to it and your other Voiceplay and Geoff videos many times since then. You are one of my favorite reactors. Love you Nick my friend.
If I didn’t recommend My Mother Told Me I was negligent-sorry. I love this one, too. And many a person has tried to figure out how Layne made that noise. On one hand, these guys sometimes (rarely) DO bring in instrumentals, so something might have been added in post. OTOH, I’ve been watching David Larson’s beatboxing videos and these guys can make some really unexpected noises, so I dunno. By now you’ve been told about J.None, so I won’t repeat, other than to say he’s serving his country and that makes him beyond special. Great reaction! If you haven’t already decided to watch Geoff’s rendition of God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, it’s a work of art. Pay attention to the lighting while you watch-that’s Eli’s doing. It’s always worthwhile to check the credits with these guys-you’ll realize quickly that all of them are really good at lots of things.
Excellent choice. J. None left the group but came back for a special feature in Friends On The Other Side, which you will love. Those who don't like VP have a right to their so-called opinions but those of us who know better would do well to avoid those people. Next life? Careful what you ask for, you could be a woman bass singer.
The rare criticism that I read about VoicePlay is that Geoff sometimes goes too low when it is not needed. In this song, the low notes were perfectly placed and felt consistent with the tone and genre. Everyone has their favorites. Home Free and VoicePlay are my top two. PTX is still in my top 10.
I don't get that criticism to be honest. I've never heard anyone say Mitch from PTX sings high too much. There are a couple spots where it may seem out of place, but they are few and far between.
@@natebaker3672 I think the difference is in the appropriate use...if it fits the song, which normally the high notes does, its ok...but the over use of extrememly low notes that don't fit the song.....for instance...Hoist the Colors....totally OK with that song...it is beyond fantastic. 16 Tons, Blackbird, Headless Horseman and so many others are totally fine and FANTASTIC songs..but there are just some where I think it is more of a gimmick and takes away from the song itself. It isn't the actual note...high or low...it is the fit with the type/style of song.
An excellent choice of a song, requests or no! With your appreciation of the arrangement, it'd be cool to see you watch a very different cover of "My Mother Told Me" by Adam Chance of Home Free with a group called The Hound + The Fox. It's a different arrangement, but another great cover in my opinion.
No complaints about the song choice! These guys don't have a bad song. My mother told me is one of my favorite voiceplay songs, but you can literally print out all their songs and throw a dart at your list and pick a winner!
I think maybe some people have a long standing favorite group and they are fiercely loyal to them. Voiceplay is So good that they threaten that loyalty and therefore they get rejected.
Ok yes you did 😂 That is two reactions in a row I enjoyed xD I was even a little annoyed I got interrupted watching because the mailman came to the door. But he is just doing his job so... I definitely made the right decision subscribing ^^ Loved the Halloween intro too!
A song that features Geoff is Oogie Boogie song from Nightmare before Christmas. One they released about a month ago was Friends on the Other Side, featuring J None. (One between Eli and Layne).
You have had a number of people suggest some great songs. One of my favorites is the song “Bang”. It just puts me in such a happy mood! You can’t help but love it. Personally, they could sing the phone book and it would be wonderful. They sing a lot of Disney songs (they do all live in Orlando…not far from Walt Disney World) and for some people that is not their favorite kind of songs to listen to. But what they do with those songs is amazing! One of their newest Disney songs they did which will amaze you is Friends on the Other Side. Geoff also has his own channel. Check out Blackbird or 16 Tons or House of the Rising Sun. They are all great!
The only time I remember seeing one where the reactor really didn't like them - he was holding them to standards that are exactly against their aesthetic. Harmonies aren't "right," not the way a cappella is "supposed" to sound, Layne doesn't sound "enough" like a drum set (on a performance where he was making lots of interesting sounds that - yes - weren't drum sounds). Oh, and it didn't sound exactly like the original. Your comment "fascinating to the ears" is how I feel. Geoff has commented that there's no point in doing a song if you're going to sound exactly the same - their goal is to offer something new, and I think they consistently do that. What I love - and they are hands down my favorite - is that I am never, ever bored. They surprise me, pull me in. Geoff's new Christmas carol (on his private channel) is an example of that. I'm bored and over Christmas carols before they begin: Geoff's version of "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" had me howling with approval. PTX bores me. They are pristine and predictable. Beautiful tones, conventional harmonies, and I know what note they're going to sing before they do it. I can't get through their performances. But then, I love Dimash, Snarky Puppy and Dirty Loops, so I'm not looking for artists who do what everyone else has already done. Surprise my ears with something intensely musical and fresh, and I'm all in.
I agree about PTX, they are good, but boring. I think they're older stuff was better and Avi was great, but Voiceplay is always changing up what they are doing, from Moana to Queen in 5 min. to Bang! Always keep me entranced.
Me too. They have gotten so polished that it sounds slick. All surface. They have beautiful voices but they are too predictable. Like my nephew who only gets Vanilla ice cream no matter what flavors they offer.
Geoff has some great 'low bass singer covers' where he does all the harmonies himself and gives his bass voice the lead. he's got some how to videos too on how to expand your low register. Tim Foust, as you might already know, taught him how to reach those lower notes.
Geoff Castellucci has several solo songs that you should check out. One is take me home country roads and the other is over the Misty Mountain you will completely freak out!
In my personal opinion, anybody who hates on this stuff just is not using any brains at all. Even if you don't like the sound, you must give respect for the effort these guys put in to their content. Their technical acumen is AMAZING! THEN, their talent is absolutely world-class! That cannot be ignored, even by haters.
@Sauceydad You Sir, made my afternoon. Honestly, Ty for doing what you do. Your facial expressions and humor fill my drive home. No, Of course I’m not watching video while driving 😳. Anyhow, please do some live streams. We need to chat out some of these comments!!! PTX - Home Free - Voice Play. … … I have a request for a song I think will blow your mind, need ppl to upvote so you see it - might have to go comment on ALL the new videos till it catches: Hu - Wolf Totem. I promise it’s your cup of tea, and maybe a bottle of beer. The Hu. Wolf Totem. It’s not A Capella, it’s got a crazy cool ethnic instrument. I don’t want to spoil the surprise - you’ll dig it.
Once again, your reactions are priceless. Not too many people realize this but Layne the beat boxer can actually sing as low as Geoff can. He does it as a backup for Geoff at times. Please do a reaction video of Voice Plays version of Tennessee vs Whisky. It is so smooth & the ending harmony riff so in sink with each other done as a group is amazing & very hard to do.
I had to laugh when you said, "No, I'm not making that sound; you all are just asking me to do it because you want to make fun of me. You guys are so mean!" I love your sense of humor!
This number is great. It was my introduction to VoicePlay and I fell in love immediately. For a major change of pace check out The Chicken Song. It's a part of their stage show, with minimal costumes. I've seen 2 videos of this, one from 2014 and one 2 years later. There's no J None; I think the other guys name is Tony Wakim.
My theory on why some people don't like VP is the timing of when they got into A Capella music. Those like me who have loved A capella music from the 90s to 2000s grew to appreciate a large number of groups because A Capella music wasn't as consistent or easily accessible as it is today, so we are more likely to appreciate more artists and give everyone a fair chance. Those that started to like A Capella around the time of the sing off saw a significant time where Home Free and PTX were just putting out higher quality music more often than VP who mostly discovered their identity and honed their arrangements a lot in the last few years, so some of them became closed minded and never allowed themselves to enjoy VP. Those that got into Acapella more recently see similar quality between the 3 top groups and seem more likely to appreciate all 3 groups for what they bring individually even if they have a preference towards the style of one group.
Well put Nate. One thing youtube has been good for is that people and groups have the chance to bring their music and art to a larger audience and they don't have to wait for some record label to pick them up to do so. There are a huge amount of people with a lot of talent out there.
Maybe. But I see the ones that don't like VP usually aren't wearing head phones. My thought is they just don't hear the really low and high tones so it sounds flat to them.
@@christineschutten248 I wouldn't doubt that can play a role. I actually got into voiceplay before I realized I needed to wear headphones, though. They still sound good, but you definitely miss the complexity of the sound.
Fun fact. This song is a badly translated snippet from an old Norse Skald. (basically a poem that is also a story, like a saga or an epic). This part of the story is actually pretty dark. This version basically states, 'mommy says I'll buy a biiiig boat someday.' The original story is that he, a kid of around 9, got mad and killed a few kids. An adult came to intervene and subdue the murderous kid so he killed that guy too. The kids dad was horrified, his mother was proud. The original lyrics were more like, 'my mother told me, they should give me a new ship and crew and send me to show them how to be a real Viking warrior.'
I personally love all of the big 3, PTX, HF & VP. And you can't really make a bad choice in any of their catalogues. Go through and pick what speaks to you, and I'm here for it. If you're looking to watch a reactor with plenty of knowledge, check out the Charismatic Voice. She's an opera singer, and does the coolest interviews.
Another good rendition of this song is by Soltatio Mortis. They are a German metal band that a little bit of a folk sound. The reason I'm mentioning this is that they have bagpipes and you talking about them thought you might get a kick it of it
I just had a scheduling idea for you: Tuesday-Wednesday-Thursday, Friday-Saturday-Sunday cycles for your great HF, PTX, Voiceplay cycling, with Monday reserved for other special videos (mayber, solo/separate projects of team members? - Avi, Kevin KO, Superfruit with Mitch&Scott, Geoff, Austin, Tim...)! This would give my week such a good rhythm, and all three bands would have a good weekday and weekend spot as well. :)
Please check out 'Wonder As I Wander - Epic Version' by Simon Khorolskiy. He also did 'Poor Wayfaring Stranger' featuring Chris Rupp. Both are pretty awesome, but the first one is a lesser known Christmas song so tis the season.
Also Jennifer Glashover (spelling?) who is a vocal coach. I like her because she talks about their voices. Another (pretty quirky) reactor is Mortius. He is a performer and teacher and has pointed out some things that I had never noticed. Usually from his experience in Acapella. Zherrie (Zhen and Carrie) are also singers who have a unique point of view. Between them and Qofy I get a pretty rounded analysis. I also like Elizabeth Zharoff from Charismatic Voice and Peter Barber who is a bass singer himself. However they’re both very technical and a lot of what they say sometimes goes over my head. But every once in a while they’ll just price out a little nugget that changes the whole way I think about the song.
Need to check out Peter Hollens and Tim Foust Misty Mountains

Include Queen in 5 minutes, Bang, Butter, If I were a Rich man, warrior, ALL the aca-Top 10s, their Disney medleys...just scroll through their whole playlist. Then start with Geoff's separate channel playlist. 👍😁
If you want to be blown away for the sound in the headset, listen to their cover of We're Good.
Wow! 😮 what a fabulous song! Thank you for sharing this one.
I like to listen to this and Home Free sea chanty melody to get me going in the morning. Something about rowing a boat makes me move I guess😅
Best commentary of all the reaction channels. Thank you. Love the banter.
Oh this and Oogie Boogies Song are my favourite Voiceplay songs
Excellent choice. J. None left the group but came back for a special feature in Friends On The Other Side, which you will love. Those who don't like VP have a right to their so-called opinions but those of us who know better would do well to avoid those people. Next life? Careful what you ask for, you could be a woman bass singer.
lol......good one !!!
They are my FAVORITE! Soooo good
J. None joined the US Navy as a vocal musician.
Great powerful Song.
I love your reactions because they are so honest not fake. Keep them coming...
That’s my only criticism of Geoff and many songs are spot on, like this.
I don't get that criticism to be honest. I've never heard anyone say Mitch from PTX sings high too much. There are a couple spots where it may seem out of place, but they are few and far between.
The other criticism I’ve seen of them is when people are not a fan of the changes VP made to the original song.
That sort of thing perplexes me. Unnecessary high notes abound, and no one ever complains of those.
2:57 . That's j none the previous member (the last one to leave ) who had caesar come in to replace him .
By the way, this was said to have been filmed separately each person in a different location Amazing.
During the lockdown I think.
Love me some good bagpipe music. Celtic music is just so primal.
This was epic. Love their sound.
Adam and H&F's version is breathtaking!
Hey Saucey, I wanna see you do a reaction to OOGIE BOOGIE'S SONG from The Nightmare Before Christmas!!! Great Reactions, Keep it Up!!!
I meant to put Voiceplay's Cover LOL
Yes please. The video is fantastic and I think you will love it.
Oogie Boogie is what pulled me down the rabbit hole! And I never want to leave.
I am really enjoying your videos. You make me laugh so hard. Please continue reacting to more VoicePlay!
Ok yes you did 😂 That is two reactions in a row I enjoyed xD I was even a little annoyed I got interrupted watching because the mailman came to the door. But he is just doing his job so... I definitely made the right decision subscribing ^^ Loved the Halloween intro too!
Thank you for another great reaction!
Also, fun fact, Eli apparently made all the backgrounds with Unreal Engine. Ridiculously talented bunch of guys.
Love Voiceplay. We're it not for Home Free, they would be my daily fix.
I thought I was the only person who didn't care for ptx. I hear their music but I don't feel anything. Maybe I haven't heard the right song yet.
@@christineschutten248 I'm definitely with you. PTX feels lifeless or utterly put on, to my ears. I cannot connect with them emotionally.
@@janetdw It makes me wonder if PTX still enjoys what they are doing.
Welcome to voice play family keep it up with voice play and Geoff solo works also misty mountain cold hint there's 4 geoffs what a party
Love VP! Thank you. React to more of them and Geoff, please. 😁
That sound is the sound of an old tape player rewinding.
This production, especially with Goeff's sub-terrarian bass drone, will put hair on a billiard ball.
This song means so much more after you've watched Vikings......
In the History series VIKINGS, this was sung in the original Nordic and was just HAUNTING! 🙂
Anyone who claims they don't like VoicePlay has no business commenting on music. Period.
Your so funny loved the reaction Thanks
I had to laugh when you said, "No, I'm not making that sound; you all are just asking me to do it because you want to make fun of me. You guys are so mean!" I love your sense of humor!
We are going to hit like and ask for more. That is what we will do.
I love the vids man, ive been interested in voiceplay for a while and have only just found your channel! Keep it up
My theory on why some people don't like VP is the timing of when they got into A Capella music.
This is probably my favorite song, but also check out Geoff Castelucci's "sixteen tons" or "the monster mash".
Fun fact. Eli actually made all of the backgrounds they're on in Unreal Engine.
i am a bass singer an i love it ther is just that that i am a voman i am from denmark and ould
Great reaction S.D.! Eli made the backgrounds himself in unreal engine.
Quem diz que não gosta, é pq tem inveja.
Excellent choice! Good luck with your fantasy football team(s).
I like this one too! Do Geoffs “Monster Mash”, it’s funny🐝🤗❤️
There is a tik tok of Geoff preparing to do this song before he left the house 🥰🥰🥰🥰🔥
Another good rendition of this song is by Soltatio Mortis. They are a German metal band that a little bit of a folk sound. The reason I'm mentioning this is that they have bagpipes and you talking about them thought you might get a kick it of it
You need to listen to their version of the Oogie Boogie song. And Geoff's Misty Mountains Cold. Absolute. Phenomenal. Amazing Amazingness.
Oh and their version of the Halo theme!!!!
You have got to check out Geoff Castalucci’s Misty Mountains. He does all four parts himself!
Yea people who hate them, they have issues
If you want to watch a good knowledgeable reactor, I would recommend Qofy. His favorite style of music is acapella and he can break it down for you.
@@janetdw I love Jennifer and Mortius!! ❤😂❤ They are awesome!!! Mortius kills me!! 😂❤
