Mykal's voice is amazing! He was high tenor with Geoff, Layne and Earl right out of high school in 1997 when they were called Four the Love. Scott Porter joined them as beat boxer and they changed the name to 4:2:Five. Mykal left for Broadway, Scott left for Hollywood. They had many changes in personnel until they changed the name to Voiceplay about 2011 or so. They used to tour extensively until Covid shut the world down. Their studio work was already great, but they ramped it up. They had been using UA-cam videos as advertising for their live shows, now it is their primary focus. Geoff, Layne, and Eli are all married with children and are finding life at home is more fun than life on the road. At this time they do not plan to tour again. I will always be here for Geoff and Voiceplay. Subscribed.
Layne runs PattyCake Studios together with former VP baritone Tony Wakim, and their studio is located in this mall. So when they do these mall videos they just go out into the mall, set up their gear and start filming. They usually do it in the morning when there's not many people around. So those are just people who work in the mall, and some random customers who have no clue how lucky they are to have the chance to see this happening live... and just walk on by like nothing is happening. 🥲🥲 And yep, Mykal was a founding member. Geoff, Layne, Earl and Mykal were the original members who started up a barbershop quartet called 4TheLove back when they were in highschool together in 1997. The amount of talent that school had at that point in time is mind blowing!

I love that Voiceplay can bring all the bells and whistles and be EXTRA as but equally can strip everything back and just prove that they have the raw vocal and arranging talents to make something like this that is just pure angelic 😇. Really like your insights!
VoicePlay is my favorite. I had been hoping that VoicePlay would cover "Stand By Me" eventually and then they did. Mykal was the perfect collaborator for this one. Apparently, Layne, Mykal, Earl, and Geoff sang this together when teenagers. A lovely song with a beautiful message about true friendship. I love the way that the VoicePlay guys arrange music nearly as much as their vocals. Thanks for this reaction

The vocals are prerecorded, of course, but the passersby typically pay no attention -- although occasionally they'll get someone who stops to listen. Mykal's voice is magical, isn't it? They had very limited time with Mykal and had to do this "Mall style" like they do for their shorts/minis. The full video that they did manage with Mykal was "Be Prepared" (Lion King). They're standing in front of the Pattycake Productions store front in the Oviedo Mall. Like a lot of malls, demand for the store fronts is significantly reduced compared to twenty years ago (because, Amazon), and so a lot of the spaces have been picked up by things that don't strictly need to be in a mall, simply because it's an available space for rent. Pattycake is one of those things. The mall closest to where I live, has a bunch of medical stuff in it, including doctor's offices, a pharmacy, and a walk-in clinic. Some malls have begun converting some of the store spaces into residential units. VoicePlay films a lot of their videos inside the Pattycake space (which can have several sets up at once, by using different walls and aiming the cameras accordingly for each shoot), e.g., when Pattycake had the haunted forest set up for their Villain's Lair series, VoicePlay took advantage of that set to film their Classical Chaos video around the same time. But occasionally, when they don't need a set as such, they just go out into the mall and film, like this.

It's crazy that as high ss Earl Elkins Jr is, he was Tenor 2 to Mykal being Tenor 1 in the group. Earl has some standout moments in Queen in Five Minutes that shows off more than just his piercing high notes. Hoping that VP can get Mykal back to collaborate again soon because they sound awesome together.
I love listening to Voice Play, and love the way each person allows the others to shine in turn. They’re not selfish because they’re good enough they don’t have to be😊

So glad to be able to hear that voice that blends with the rest of the group. Their studio is in that mall and they were just outside the door. Most of the studio videos are done there as does Geoff's solo videos. His solos are not acapella, he saves the acapella for VoicePlay. Geoff solo of Imagine (John Lennon), Blackbird (Paul McCartney), Sound of Silence (Simon and Garfunkel), High and Dry (RadioHead), Wicked Games ( Chris Isaak), Shenandoah. All of these come with his piano.
