If you love this one, get ready! They put out a short promoting their next one coming out soon, Valhalla Calling. Even though Jose isn't in it, the other 4 seem to be wearing the same makeup that they wore in this one. Therefore, many see Valhalla Calling as a sequel to My Mother Told Me. Also, that's not Cesar. That's J-None. J-None was full-time member when this came out. He was recruited to serve in the US Navy. Cesar joined VP afterwards. J-None does still perform with VP when on leave. Both J-None and Cesar will be in Valhalla Calling
I’ve just about sprained my finger hitting replay so many times watching and listening to it. Also discovered that it’s a whole different piece of music without headphones or with it turned down so it’s like getting several songs in one. And the karaoke track! There is so much going on in that song that it was overwhelming. So I really really appreciate the karaoke track more than usual this time. It’s almost good enough to be released on its own. This is going to break reactors the way Hoist the Color and All That Matters did. In this one Eli is the scary one. In the new one they’re all pretty scary (even Cesar) and Geoff is downright demonic!
@@janetdw Yes, I can't wait to see the reactors break when "Valhala Calling" comes out!! Who needs a war horn when you've got a geoff? 😂 Knew you'd freak out to this one. Now you are "prepared" for the new one when it comes out. ❤ #DJantlers #DJsHerd And Geoff is the first one to knock you out of your chair! Yaaaaas! Go geoff! 😅
Geoff always complains about how low Layne makes him sing, so that might also be part of why he sometimes seems more impressive in Voiceplay videos than his own 😁
Geoff's low note in this one. If a ship's captain heard that in the fog, he would be in a panic trying to figure out how to get out of the way. Imagine the size of the ship to make that noise.
Funny story: at about 5:15 I thought for a hot second I thought you said Geoff reminded you of The Who. The bafflement on my face must have been hilarious, it's almost a pity no one was around to point and laugh 🤣 Yes, The Hu are amazing
Great reaction as usual! If you love this one with Jose you will love Hoist the colours that he goes with them. Geoff and Eli are bonkers in that one as well
I've yet to come across another person with physical reactions as similar to my own, especially when Geoff goes off. Those arm movements, it's like you're copying me 😁
Love your reactions. I have two fun facts for you that may blow your mind in further appreciation for these guys. 1. Geoff first taught Layne to beatbox. (Layne has obviously learned and developed many techniques since then, but he started by being taught by Geoff.) 2. (There are old videos of this) Geoff used to beatbox and be base.
In the video Death of a Bachelor, it's just Earl and Geoff. Don't know how many tracks they each had to record, but Geoff is beatboxing and singing bass. And Earl is wearing Geoff's shoes because he wore white shoes that day, not realizing they were filming against a white background.
If someone had told me that I would spend hours and hours watching singers cover songs about Vikings, and loving them all, I would have said they were crazy and laughed out loud. Well, no one told me and here I am.🤷♀️😅❤
Originally it was based on famous ancient Norse Skaldic saga composed by Egill Skallagrímsson. In the saga when he was a child he cleaved another kid's skull in half. Many in his village were horrified of what had happened, but his mother was proud of him and told that he would become a great warrior.
I want to say that every time I see one of their videos where they do extensive make/costuming, it is ALWAYS fantastic! Geoff doing The Monster Mash, the group doing The Dragon Born Comes are just a couple of examples.
Wait until you see the newest video VP is doing, it's like My Mother Told Me part two! By the holy hammer of Thor and the power of Odin onward towards Valhalla #hailthetravelers
Geoff "The War-horn" Castellucci certainly sounds and looks intimidating as a Viking!!! As someone else has said, they've put out a Viking short which hopefully means a full length version coming soon - and, if so, it's one I've thought since I heard the original version would be great done by them! Jose Rosario jnr is or was a member of Rockapella, I think? I don't really know anything about them or him but he does have a very good voice. He's also in VoicePlay's "Hoist the Colours", another one that will destroy you! Oh and that's J None not Cesar - this was before J went of to join and the Navy and Cesar joined 🙂
Geoff’s droning here definitely sets an ominous tone, but I gotta say, Eli is the guy who looks and sings like he would totally plunder a village. LOL. That’s actually J.None. And yeah, he’s amazing. GASP! Mess up Geoff’s hair? SACRILEGE!! 😱 If you really want to nerd out and enjoy some more bass singer ASMR, Colm McGuinness has a version where he sings this in Old Norse. He also has a super deep bass that has a really interesting timbre. (He also has a metal Old Norse version-too much screaming for me, but…).
Thank you. I was trying to remember who else did that in Norse. Colm has such an interesting tone to his voice, and I agree the screaming one is too loud.
If you want to see an oldie but goodie check out their cover of Grim Grinning Ghosts. Not the live one, the black and white one. I know it's for Halloween, but you can just watch without reacting to it. It's just fun.
My Mother Told Me is a Norse/Icelandic saga/poem from somewhere around the 9th century. It's been around a while. I got to hear the promotion for Valhalla Calling. It sounds like it will be awesome!!!!
This is prob my favourite VoicePlay song but I'm such a fantasy nerd.... I think The Hu song might be Wolf Totem - but all of their songs tend to have the double harmonic scattered throughout (my favourite of theirs is Heart of A Woman with Lzzy Hale from Halestorm) - On another track, if you've not checked out Avi Kaplans (former Ptx) solo stuff holy cats the man has a voice like chocolate covered velvet... take care - great reaction (where do we vote for a full on rock god Eli song??? although I'm not sure I'd survive)
I LOVE VoicePlay’s version of this! And for more of the angelic side of Eli, please, please, please check out their cover of Waving Through a Window (on Kurt Hugo Schneider’s channel)! Only Eli on lead, and it’s amazing!! The others are great with their backing vocals and Kurt on some kind of mini keyboard!
Their next video “Valhalla Calling”, coming out soon, is the sequel to this song so it’s great that you’ve freshly reacted to this before that one comes out. If you thought this was mind-blowing, you ain’t seen nothing yet!
You will enjoy reacting to VoicePlay's cover of Hoist the Colors. It also features Jose Rosario Jr. It is from the last "Pirates of the Caribbean" movie.
Great reaction. Yes, I would definitely be running away if I heard that low drone coming at me from an enemy onslaught. There are a few other versions that you might enjoy. All of them are different from each other. The one from The Wellermen is basses only. Yum. The one from The Hound and the Fox features Adam Chance of Home Free. And what I think was the first one I ever saw is from Alina Gingertail. It uses very interesting instruments. Enjoy.
Fabulous reaction! I knew Geoff would be the one to get you on the floor! Haha Also, just an aside, this is J.None, not Cesar...💗 Cesar is a current member, J.None is a former member who regularly collaborates with them when he can (Nothing Else Matters in January was his most recent...until the new song drops...🤭)
Rick Underwood is a terrific makeup artist based in Orlando, Florida. He's worked at Universal Studios Orlando for years, which is one of his connections to many VoicePlay members (Cesar, J. None, Tony, Geoff, and Kathy all performed in heavy makeup in the Beetlejuice Graveyard Review and Beetlejuice Graveyard Mashup shows). They call on Rick and Renette Feren (who has also worked at Universal). As I mentioned on the Valhalla Calling video reaction, you can see the tonlist rune (Norse word rune for music) on J. None's forehead and Geoff's upper arm between the bands. Rick has stunning attention to detail.
The host should watch the video that Elizabeth Zharhoff (the Charismatic Voice) made for this cover. She adds a lot of fun background detail. And once again our host had an outstanding reaction, this time without much previous knowledge of this song. Meaning that I can't blame knowing a song ahead of time for all of the host's great reactions (think "Ain't goin' down ...") Another thing about the host's reactions is that because he often reacts to songs that have already had their time in the sun, I get to pick and choose my fave covers to listen to. The host, BTW, has not made any misteps. Finally, after giving fair warning in previous videos, he fell out of his chair. But made no mention of it, so I'm inclined to think that this wasn't the first time.
Bang is the only performance of theirs that I absolutely refuse to listen to. Nothing to do with Voiceplay’s performance, but I despise the song. As someone whose life has been touched by suicide, I just find it triggering, not “catchy” or “happiness inducing”.
Love your voiceplay reactions! It would be great to see you react to one of theirs which feats J None as the lead - Friends on the other side is a great example of what he can do.
I’m so glad you were able to get this one in before “Vahalla Calling” comes up! And as soon as I saw which song this was, I just knew it would be the one that had you on the floor - just no idea whether it would be Eli or Warhorn Geoff that caused it. I really love Bezerker Eli in this. But I find it hard to decide if he’s more intense here or in “Hoist the Colours”. Fun reaction. Always is!
They are ALL VERY INTENSE in "Valhalla Calling" and continue the characters in costume that you see here. As a Patreon, I have seen the early release many times and it still blows me away each time!
Wait till you see the new one that they will be releasing soon. They know Rick Underwood who is a Creative Fabrication Artist at Universal Orlando Resort in Orlando, Florida, United States. Everyone has worked the theme parks in Florida, Disney, and Universal Studios. Geoff really does it with his arrangement of "Hoist the Colours" Jose Rosario Jr. is also featured in.
This song was, if I'm not wrong, in both the tV series "Vikings" and in the video game "Assassins Creed V - Valhalla". And as others already pointed out, you were right in time reacting to this, for the SEQUEL to it is due for release next week or the following, and, by the short they've put out as a teaser, it'll be EPIC. 🙂 Now, as you like costumes and stuff, you should try "In the hall of the Mountain King"... 😁 See you next time!
Geoff's drone in this song literally got me to go back to practicing the didgeridoo. It's a hell of a thing. Loved the reaction and looking forward to more!
They do use make-up in various videos and Geoff also has what he refers to as a beard wrangler. Especially in Ghost Riders In The Sky. This song contains words from an Icelandic saga about Egill Skallagrimsson. I'm a big fan of The Hu Band. Is it Wolf Totem you're thinking of? VP arrangements are a thing of beauty. Always. As other have said, their new one can be seen as a Vikings II. And it will destroy you. Yes, more than this one.
We knew this would do it for you😂. Awesome reaction as always. New video. Same costumes and makeup except Geoff and Cesar. Geoff is more dirty and messy hair and Cesar is wearing Jose's robe. Eli, Layne and J None are all the same.
Your reactions genuinely make me laugh out loud because they're so dead on. You are becoming one of my favorite reactors! Except that's not Cesar. That's J None.
Your reactions are thoroughly entertaining - love it! Have you done 'The Dragonborn Comes' from the Skyrim games yet? It's more full-costumed, elaborate-setting gorgeousness; Geoff brings the insanity, Eli brings the insanity, and their guest singer is Omar Cardona, who has the voice of an angel.
Jose sings with Rockapella, one of the OG professional acapella groups. They're best known for their appearances on the TV show "Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?" back in the day, but they laid down some great acapella. Check out their "Zombie Jamboree" or "Shambala" ( both predate Jose's tenure.)
gjallarhorn - the Viking horn Heimdallr will use to herald the start of Ragnarok. Rumor has it Layne just told Geoff, "See how low you can go and hold it as long as you can." Not Cesar - J.None
I’m so glad you did this one. Their new one is coming out soon, though you won’t be prepared. I love the digital background that Eli did. He used the program Unreal Engine which is used in the film industry and video games. I like that they each seem to represent a different area since the Viking tribes were pretty spread out. I also think that they’re representative of the five forces of life: Earth, Wind, Fire, Water and aether (sort of the life force in the second Thor movie). One of the amazing things, other than the fact that they’re scary as all get out, is that Jose was a substitution. This happened just as Covid became life-changing. The original artist was not able to travel because of Covid restrictions. Jose had just come back to Orlando because the Chicago Company of Hamilton that he was in had shut down. Lucky us, but not so great for Chicago. Jose also appears in a couple of minis shot around that time and in Hoist the Colours. By the time they filmed Hoist the Colours , also originally planned for another artist, J had left for the military and Cesar came on board. Hoist the Colours also has rock god Eli, and that was the part originally planned for their guest artist. Jose can’t get that gravel in his voice so Eli had to learn the second part and Jose took his part. That’s why even though Jose is the guest artist Eli has most of the lines in HTC. In their new one Cesar is they’re taking Jose’s place and J is the returning guest star. It’s very confusing at times but you are catching on quickly! Fun little factoid: in high school Jose and Cesar appeared in Les Mis together.
@@hwyla4416 Hmmm. I remember that they did need a sub for HTC. I thought that both were designed around the artist. that couldn’t make it. They have generally been doing two selections with the same artist most of the time since Covid. Maybe I just assumed it, but I thought I read it.
You could be right. I’m not as clued in since I’ve not yet been able to join Patreon. But I do remember people noting Eli took the ‘guest’ role in that one (and Jose sang Eli’s original part) Turned out great for the song that way!
I can't wait until you get to Hoist the Colors. You wanted to be a pirate after HF Sea Shanty? Hoist the Colors will make you find a ship and stowaway.
I think it’s funny interesting that you think that deep note that Geoff does as like demon-esc ( not that it’s wrong,) I just have always thought of that more like the Earth or God(s) coming, it’s just so primal.
The hornsound is a "Gjallerhorn".....If you want the whole viking aesthetic, look up Iceland's 10.000 person Thunderclap. Imagine all 10,000 of them yelling it at YOU. I think I already recommended Oogie Boogie...emphatically if I remember correctly, and here's another good one: we don't talk about Bruno
I also think Geoff should hook up with The Hu! I bet doing Mongolian singing with them would be quite the treat and learning opportunity for him. The Hu also has similar group energy/dynamics. He'd fit right in.
"Yeah cool, we're fighting demons" 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
"When you're in an acapella group, and you sing notes so low you rattle nearby glass, you're the bass. When you're in an acapella group, and you sing notes so low you're called upon to replicate the terrifying power of a Viking war horn, you're Geoff Castellucci." -- Anonymous

It's official...Geoff made DJ fall out of his chair.
Layne arranged this one. The fan joke is that Layne asked Geoff how long he could hold an B flat 1... and Geoff's answer was 'Yes'.
That was the sound of the Viking Gjallarhorn, and you're right--it's sounded like a war horn to terrify the enemy. (The "j" is silent, btw, so the word sounds more like "gal-ar-horn")

Geoff holds a nice long low note in VoicePlay Moana Medley
You actually see the moment that DJ's brain melts on this one! fantastic and everything that I was hoping for!
#DJantlers #DJsHerd
This song was, if I'm not wrong, in both the tV series "Vikings" and in the video game "Assassins Creed V - Valhalla". And as others already pointed out, you were right in time reacting to this, for the SEQUEL to it is due for release next week or the following, and, by the short they've put out as a teaser, it'll be EPIC. 🙂
Now, as you like costumes and stuff, you should try "In the hall of the Mountain King"... 😁
See you next time!
Geoff's drone in this song literally got me to go back to practicing the didgeridoo. It's a hell of a thing. Loved the reaction and looking forward to more!
My take on that bass drone is...
Layne: Hey Geoff, How long can you hold a bass subharmonic?
Geoff: Yes.
Jose is also in hoist the colours. You'll need to hold onto your chair for that one for sure with Geoffs magical things he does!
If you want to hear the 'rock god' version of every single one of them, listen to Queen in 5 Minutes 😂
We knew this would do it for you😂.
Awesome reaction as always.
New video. Same costumes and makeup except Geoff and Cesar. Geoff is more dirty and messy hair and Cesar is wearing Jose's robe. Eli, Layne and J None are all the same.
I love your reactions!!
Your reactions genuinely make me laugh out loud because they're so dead on. You are becoming one of my favorite reactors! Except that's not Cesar. That's J None.
Love to see you react to Dragonborn comes by them.....I love you reactions, your so into the music
He already did!!! It's amazing... 😁 Look it up at his channel! 😊

He did!!! Look up at his channel!!!!
*BROTHERS BRACE YOURSELVES THE SHIPS OF RAGNAROK ARE CO~* oh nvm it's just Geoff
Love love this comment ❤️ 😂
Jose sings with Rockapella, one of the OG professional acapella groups. They're best known for their appearances on the TV show "Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?" back in the day, but they laid down some great acapella. Check out their "Zombie Jamboree" or "Shambala" ( both predate Jose's tenure.)
gjallarhorn - the Viking horn Heimdallr will use to herald the start of Ragnarok.
Rumor has it Layne just told Geoff, "See how low you can go and hold it as long as you can."
Not Cesar - J.None
Geoff, the human Gjallarhorn.
His name is Eliazar.
I’m pretty sure that Jose came to the rescue for them on “Hoist the Colors” instead of this one.
If you like The Hu, and haven't already seen their cover of Metallica's "Sad But True", would love to see you do a reaction to it.
I think the song you're thinking of The Wolf Song by the HU... Trust me, that song will vibrate your blood like nothing else.
Just you wait till vp next release
ever watched their "Hoist the colors"?
LOVE ❤ your reactions. You're very expressive. 😂
Wolf Totem is probably the song you're thinkin of, I love it too.
Love your reactions! ❤
Thank you!!
I can't wait until you get to Hoist the Colors. You wanted to be a pirate after HF Sea Shanty? Hoist the Colors will make you find a ship and stowaway.
that's J-None by the By not Cesar.
Oops! Caesar wasn't part of Voiceplay yet. That's JNone, who has Gone Walkabout with the Navy right now.
This was from before Cesar. It's J. None with them before he joined the military.
Please, please, please watch Voiceplays cover of Hoist the Colours
I also think Geoff should hook up with The Hu! I bet doing Mongolian singing with them would be quite the treat and learning opportunity for him. The Hu also has similar group energy/dynamics. He'd fit right in.
That is J None when he was with VP before going in the Navy.
