I already know that Mikes drum parts are extremely difficult, and I can’t usually count them out. Hearing a click with it just makes me understand even more how much of a master this man truly is
I believe it's extremely difficult to play with a click while watching your bandmates perform, all the energy of the crowd and the adrenaline building up. Also to be capable of giving them the relief that everything will be played as meant... A total Master!!
When shows are all synchronized with video presentations, the click is a must for the band to stay in sync with everything. This is an awesome display.
Dude come on. Playing with a click is a standard for any professional band for the last 20 years live. MM is great but playing to a click is just the norm
If you practice with a click and are used to it, it actually becomes easier to play with it. If you mess up a little, you can use the click to know exactly where your mark is to land on. It becomes somewhat of a crutch if anything. Back in the day, you'd have to rely on visual queues from bandmates at certain parts of the show especially if you didn't have in ear monitors. Oh and if you're modulating it's SO much easier with a click.
This was a complete JOY to watch. Power, speed, control, super human chops, 4 way ambidextrous insanity, humor, brilliance. Mike, you are an inspiration to us all. The heights that you have ascended to with the instrument is breathtaking. Thank you for many years of incredible playing, and hope for many more!
I highly value this level of precision - I was completely blown away during the whole 2hrs show just because all the people on stage were totally in control. It's up to the artists to show what they know and can do and it's up to the receiver to enjoy it; the reverse doesn't work too often. The nature of this experience is more evocative (artwork offering a base for perceiving and feeling) than expresive (artwork and/or artist is showing some kind of enjoyment or other emotions). Honestly I dont't understand what all the people who see DT's playing as "not entertaining enough, a.k.a. boring" want. It's our job as fans to have fun!
Absolutely outstanding. Mike takes drums to a level that few have or ever will. Watching Mike play either inspires you or leads you to quit. There are no other options. He makes you see, in real time, your own mediocrity, and sometimes that is hard to deal with. I hope that he inspires you to see how far you may go if you practice, practice, practice, and study, study, study. Enough said.
My bride 👰🏻 payed for me to have a private Skype lesson w/ Mike and it was definitely educational but also like talking over a pint. Hard to believe I know but, Mike is human after all!! Who would’ve thunk it?
ah stop it with the "better than everyone" bullshit" Yeah he's good, he's extremely good and he's probably one of the best in how he rotates his body around the kit, and orchestrates his fills.. but I can think of many other drummers that outclass Mike in many other departments. There's no such thing as the best drummer ever.
I agree about the live tempos increasing. Using the click is the best way to reference the correct tempo. I have suggested this to drummers, and they seem offended, until i relate that the notes i am playing cant sound rushed, or pushed; that faster sections need room to breathe.
Awesome as always. A consummate Master. Thank you Mr. Mangini for putting in the thousands upon thousands of hours of practice over the many years for all of us to marvel at your absolute skill and perfection. Again, thank you for your tremendous professionalism. It is simply amazing.
I can see that for the part with simpler constant patterns is like a coffee break for him. Those moments are almost like he using only 0.0001% of his capacity so he can recharge his energy like running in eco mode. Then he switches to complex part by smoothly spending conserved energy. So efficient and Control.
I was focusing on the click while looking at him play. I bet it's extremely difficult to stay conscious and sharp to play those crazy things precisely while listening to the click. 🥵
How the F-u-K does he play like that every night on your? You don’t see his power from afar but up close? Wow. Just brutality hitting everything. Freak of nature
First song I ever attempted to learn by you guys. Did the easier version of it first. Then added all the flare later So happy you posted this song thank you!
First of all - thank you for letting us in on the clicks. I knew that DT changes the timeline a lot. And fast. For me it is too hard to try to get them all... This was cool... trying to "get it". But I will admit.. the 4-4 or "Mike's coffee break", as Wongsakorn below here called it , I can easily take. And maybe most 6-8 :D So, very cool to follow the click. Thanks again!
Awesome performance my man! Honestly, I also enjoy the feeling of not being married to a click live, but I do enjoy the pressure of being tempo-perfect that it removes from me. Otherwise I have to sing lyrics to the chorus of the song I'm about to start and hope my adrenaline doesn't make me sing em too fast haha
Click tracks are something I am trying to understand when I, (the composer), ask a drummer/percussionist to play on a song. Because some of them seem to prefer playing to click tracks always. But because I have had several, who did not ask what the BPM was, or what time signature the song parts were in, or why I didn't have a click track with the audio file, but then they do an awesome drum track that fits the song perfect. It just seems to be an idea of professionalism, or they have trained themselves to need a click track. They never have taken the training wheels off. I am not that person that listens and is like, that hi-hat was off a 32/108 percent!! All I care about; does the drums sound interesting and fun. Does it fit the song, and fitting is loose, because it could fit, by playing against the speed of the other instruments. I can say I usually always ask someone that I know will do something I like, without walking them through it.
The aim of the click track is not to hit the notes right on the clicks, its just to keep the tempo right. A good drummer plays around the click track to build groove. It must be just a security rope, if its more than that then it might suck life out of the playing...
Mike can play without a click. All the complaints are either drummers that need more practice, or fickle people. Some really good live versions are when the drummer speeds up or slows down the tempo. Whether or not it is a problem, is if they intended it, or they lost it.
That’s why without click tracks, the adrenaline would have Portnoy speeding things up steamrolling the melodies such as on Dance Of Eternity medley on Live at Budokan during the Erotomania guitar solo where JP couldn’t groove with it, just plow through the notes
Actually, the main purpose of the click is to keep the band lined up with the vocal track that James is lip-syncing to. Honestly who cares. Symphony X plays without a click, Romeo doesnt even wear in ear monitors and they still sound great. Click tracks don’t make music better. The only thing it does is make things more consistent.
Actually, James has never lip sync’d (means moving lips and not singing. he used some doubles leads early on in the tour. He removed them. But never faked anything. Mangini said what the main purpose is, but you know better .. lol I find huge joy in reading MP “army” commenting. Mangini is clearly doing something pretty amazingly right.
@@jaym6906 … who the fuck said anything about the “MP Army”? Am I in the MP army for simply not allowing someone to trash Portnoy’s legacy? You don’t get out much do you…
I remember early in my drumming, I'd let adrenaline take over, and I'd speed up and slow down unpredictably. Something everyone always considered a "rookie move". Made it very difficult to ever play with a click, and it made recording a nightmare. It always drove me nuts when Portnoy would do the same thing with DT. But here, hearing this complicated piece and the drums just flow so effortlessly over the click. I kept listening for a single instance where he went noticeably off from the click, even slightly, but I can't find any! It wouldn't surprise me if the entire show is clicked, just so Mangini can be in sync with the video and light show.
What's happening at 5:12? Usually you have the high tone of click on the first of each bar - is it just easier for the groove in 6 to have it mid-bar ?
I already know that Mikes drum parts are extremely difficult, and I can’t usually count them out. Hearing a click with it just makes me understand even more how much of a master this man truly is
This is just extreme out of this World drumming. So accurate but still with lots of musicianship
Round of applause for the guy offstage who has to hit those 2 cowbells all night
I believe it's extremely difficult to play with a click while watching your bandmates perform, all the energy of the crowd and the adrenaline building up. Also to be capable of giving them the relief that everything will be played as meant... A total Master!!
I think they all have click in their monitors
Most bands and shows, for that matter, play to a click these days. Even the Cirque du Soleil bands do.
When shows are all synchronized with video presentations, the click is a must for the band to stay in sync with everything. This is an awesome display.
