Peter Pettigrew, Order of Merlin First Class, more commony referred to as Wormtail was at the very least a half blood wizard. He attended Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and wizardry where he was sorted into Gryffindor House. Peter is best known for his unforgiving betrayal of his best friend James Potter and his wife Lily, which led to their deaths.

It's difficult to pinpoint when Peter went wrong, he just always needed to be with the strongest leader and when Tom turned out to be the strongest (in Peter's mind) Peter easily switched allegiance.

Is that something Rowling have revealed? I'm really curious! But that's what's behind the Potter success. One do care about the characters. Even the least noble. I have also thought; if Woldy wanted to get to the Potters, he would try the weakest link. Someone easily scared. And that goes for if he wanted a source into The Order Of The Phoenix too, I guess. If his 'friends' hadn't bullyed him, things maybe would have turned out quite different. And if Sirius hadn't been a prat and turned Pettigrew into secret keeper instead of himself.

And I agree with you on the bullying, if Wormie had felt loved and accepted, instead he was looking for saftey with the Muraders, but if he felt true friendship he wouldn't have betrayed Lily and James.

He never exactly 'went wrong'. He always was wrong, just as many of us are deep down. Really, peter had weaknesses,and any weakness in a person can be exploited by others. And, when we've been targeted and exploited, we do awful things. So, it's your weakness really that could make you just like Peter. It might not be your fear. He was fine and so are all of us, until our weaknesses become all consuming due to the situation we may be in. Under the right set of conditions, any of us could do horrific things if we don't try and understand our weaknesses and improve on them and to try and make the brave choice every day and not the easy one. At least, that's what I think anyway. it's kind of a scary thought that anyone could be a potential monster and do straight up evil things one day though. Damn it though Peter, you're why i have trust issues!
Other than Umbridge, Pettigrew is my most hated character in the series.

@TAD The marauders were clearly 'capable' of using unforgivable curses, but made the moral decision to do so. Wormtail was clearly not more powerful than them, and only got by on deceit, villainy and cowardice. Notice how he never actually attempts to fight anybody in a duel, and only strikes out when people are defenseless.

You should’ve read the exchange in the book. Sirius said he would’ve even died for Wormtail. In all honesty, that makes Wormtail’s betrayal even worse.
I think why I like Pettigrew so much, and what makes him such a rarity among villains, is his motivation for becoming evil being almost completely rooted in his cowardice.
See, there are innumerable movie villains who demonstrate how qualities like greed, jealousy, and a longing for power can turn a person evil; Peter Pettigrew is one of only a VERY small number of movie villains who demonstrates how cowardice can make a person become evil.
Grima Worm-tongue is another one.
And let’s not forget Anakin Skywalker and his fear of his loved ones dying.
Fear is the most powerful of those qualities. In general you could say fear is almost always the basic cause for evil in some way wether it be fear of change loss death or whatever
I find him to be so interesting because of how underestimated he is as a wizard. Within the narratvie, he's dismissed as a weakling and a fool, but he performs feats that you'd expect of a wizard who's far more powerful and clever.

I think peter Pettigrew’s magic capabilities are underestimated. That violent blasting curse, the Marauders map, being an animagus, this is all very advanced magic...he may have been cowardly, but he was not an incompetent wizard.

Also pettigrew and neville bore some resemblance with each other at early times in their own hogwarts life..bt rowling showed that it is ultimately choices and not qualities which leads to right path..neville had chosen to be brave loyal and stood by harry in time of his greatest needs..whereas pettigrew chose to join the evil side forgetting his friendship and betraying them only to save his own skin...

But after reading the third book again, isn’t it more likely it was the bond between Harry and Wormtail created by Harry sparing his life back in the Shrieking Shack? He would look different, he would obtain instead of James ruffled up hair he would obtain Snape’s greasy hair and Snape’s long crooked nose while he keeps his mother’s eyes. Plus it would affect the story! For example would Snape even teach at Hogwarts and if not who would the Potions master be? Maybe a person working for Voldemort? I love Peter Pettigrew on the surface he seems such a snivelling coward but he really is conflicted and underestimated when you dig deeper.
Still I could never forgive him for the terrible things he’s done despite what good things he’s no doubt done in his life as well.

Peter was so innocent from 1960-1977 but after that just AAAAAH
I must say I hated him the most part. But
Peter Pettigrew was the definition of a coward. Someone who would save his own skin by any means necessary, even after having a 'friendship" with the people who trusted him. While it is true that he was a Griffydor, the Sorting Hat was stalled because he sensed that Peter did not have inborn courage, but he did potential to become courageous, which unfortunately Peter did not ever bring out not once in his whole life, at least not until the very end, in which that costed him his life. He only hung out with James and Sirius and other because it seemed that they were the stronger sort of people, and hoped he had some courage rubbed off on him, by being what he thought was the winning team. Peter was trusted with many secrets during their Order's task to take on the Death Eaters and Voldemort. And when he found himself in front of Voldemort, his cowardice triumped over any potential courage he could have displayed, but because he wanted to preserve his own life. He gave up the location of Lily and James Potter, becoming the reason why Harry was left an orphan. All that bravado he boasted about, and he couldn't even keep the trust that was given to him, instead throwing it all away and joining the evil wizard and his cronies so he wouldn't have to die. He thought little of his "friends", beyond what he saw as a student, and never matured any further to support the bond. Even after Peter is confronted by his former allies, now enemies, he didn't have the courage to accept responsiblity for his actions. Him saying "I didn't mean to", is an excuse to keep him from admitting his actions, and letting his fear of facing Voldemort's wrath prompt him to find a chance to escape so when Voldemort does return, he'll just grovel before him like he did those years ago. There's a reason why even most of the Death Eaters, don't even respect him, hate him. Because his cowardice is so bad, that it has also endangered their leader or his fellow acolytes, he didn't even try to find a way to come back to Voldemort sooner, his loyalty isn't even true loyalty, but by fear of dying by his hands, which actually did happen in the books. That silver hand that he was given by his "master" was enchanted with a trap that has the silver hand strangle the heck out of Peter when it senses that he is not loyal, either by running away again or sensing weakness when he can't carry out his tasks. As soon as Peter struggles to kill Harry due to the life debt he owned Harry, the silver hand's trap activated and killed him. He got what he deserved, all that time wanting to not die by Voldemort, and he ultimately dies by Voldemort through this enchantment, his master doubted his ability to stay loyal to him, and set a trap to kill him, because he was getting tired of Peter anyhow. Peter Pettigrew will always be known as the traitor that helped Voldemort tear apart the Order of the Phoenix's best defenders, murdered Cedric Diggory, and the man that orphaned Harry Potter. His cowardice serves as a lesson for me and others who struggle with ourselves, it's better to face ourselves than allow our worst traits to persist and turn us into people who will not earn respect from those who look down on cowardice.
You either die the hero, or live long enough to become the villain. Pettigrew could've been the man to die to protect the Potters and young Harry, instead he is the cause of their demise and loved by no one. He was given Order of Merlin First Class because of his presumed death; he didn't deserve the honor but if he had truly shown courage, he might've been a good figure in the history books.

It's about potential more than anything. Wormtail probably had the potential to become a better and braver person - much like Neville. And he does show some bravery in the last book which is what leads to his death. You could say that spying on the entire Order of the Phoenix is also rather brave in a way.

I love how Pettigrew had that one moment of redemption at the end. Certainly not enough to fully redeem him, he got what he deserved, but enough to make you almost feel bad for him.

I honestly think Mcgonnogal needed a stern talking down to for her treatment of Peter Pettigrew as a student. While it may have been true that he was a 'stupid, foolish boy', it was somewhat critical and unnecessary to call him that. And it sends the wrong message. Teachers, whether intentional or not, should never weed out or abuse students emotionally. They could be constructively critical of them but not judge, jury and executioner.

I genuinely do like this character. He was smart enough to frame Sirius and cause a rift in the marauder "friendship" with everyone pointing fingers all the time. If anything he was the most loyal Death Eater at the end of the day and showed a real lack of mercy.

It wouldn't have worked because Snape was a Death Eater who was friends with people who looked at her as mudblood. Imagine Snape and Lily having a double date with Lucius and Narcissa. James shared Lily's ideals and believes and they both even joined the Order where they fought for what they both believed in. Snape didn't share Lily's ideals and believes but joined the Death Eaters to fight against what she believed in.

He saw his mother as a role model and now he's a very kind, compassionate, and wonderful man because he had an incredible mother. We need to stop treating mothers like they aren't good enough to be role models to their children or teach them how to be well-rounded individuals.

Everyone here is hating Peter, it's pretty sad, he is one of my favorite characters. He just choosed the wrong way because he was so afraid. What i tought, is that Wormtail needed more attention, love and support from his friends and family and because he didn't get it and he was so scared of the dark lord, he trusted that it's better to join him than die.

In a way, I can understand why they did not include Pettigrew’s death scene from the book in the film. It would have been very disturbing for young audiences. I was already disturbed when I read that strangling scene myself. Yet I also question why they didn’t apply the same logic to Dobby’s death.

This man is definitely one of my most hated fictional characters. I can safely say I even loathe him more than I despise some people in real life. How dare he have the audacity to continue living as a rat for 12 years under the care of the lovely Weasleys? Especially after betraying his two best friends to their greatest enemy and killing 12 muggles in plain sight, making his other best friend the scapegoat. They happen to be the very friends who he was entrusted to protect from the Dark Lord. His cowardice and selfishness only makes me have nothing more than disgust and loathe for him. Poor Ron, he had to sleep with a supposedly ‘dead’ man for 12 years on a daily basis.

I heard somewhere that Peter was sorted into Gryffindor, because he had the courage to betray his friends. Thought this was an interesting idea.
I believe Voldemort knew Pettigrew was going to betray him, so he enchanted his silver arm to commit suicide when he tried to betray him.
