I tried Dual N-back a number of years ago (around 2013), and I'm planning to start using it again which is how I came across your video. At my height of using it, I noticed a significant improvement in my ability to focus and my attention span. It made my interactions in conversations, work, and even watching movies more immersive, meaningful, and effortless. It actually improved my sense of happiness, because I felt more engaged in life, and almost everything felt easier. I really don't know why I stopped - I think like any routine that requires dedication, other distractions got in the way, and I'd miss one day, then more, then stopped all together. After watching your video, it got me excited to use it again, although I could tell that I'm "out of shape" as even considering the three-back felt a bit like brain overload. At my best, I was regularly doing seven-backs and eight-backs, and the occasional nine-back. Looking forward to getting back into it.

I think the object is not to strategize but to target your working memory. say if you get to 6-back and you are grouping by 3's you are taking some of the load off your working memory, which you are trying to enhance. so a high score is not the objective. just be consistent and try to practice at least 20 minutes a day, preferably 30 but I know not all of us can dedicate that much time

    >Process-based memory training mostly focuses on enhancing capacities related to operations such as processing speed and executive functions. (Dual-N-back)
    >Strategy-based memory training on the other hand refers to improving memory performance by applying mnemonic strategies which contributes to information encoding and retrieval (memory palace)
these are excerpts describing the classifications of practices in parentheses, taken from the study on improving WM - as few people have already noted in the comments, the approach differs entirely between the two and I would presume that the search for shortcuts has arisen for the author of the video due to excessively long sessions of his training

personally playing dual n back in the sound / image version (not sound / position) I achieved a considerable increase in the number of chess wins and I also noticed a better ability to think quickly and concentrate.

      @Brainbuster 2 роки тому +10

@@wars4242 Examples are like in the video at 8:56. He describes how he used a strategy to "chunk" sets of 3, but not a new set of 3 with every turn. He memorized a new set of 3 every 3 turns. This made it much easier to win the game, but it is a crutch.
Other memory techniques are the memory palace, or using pegs, mnemonics - many memory techniques anchor the new bit of info to a map you already memorized. These can be useful in real life. But when you're trying to train your (maybe) using such techniques when your goal is to train your natural memory, using these techniques is like cheating on the SAT practice exam.

The strategy you talk about at 9:30 is good to WIN at the game, but the point is not to win but to TRAIN THE BRAIN and INCREASE IQ. By using this technique you're not really exercising the brain, but with the repeating technique you are. That's why it's harder ;)
i3 Mindgame article talks about it.

    • @andresanchez728

I have never tried either of these strategies. Instead I hold a moving "echo" in my head which I compare to what is happening. Might be what people mean by the "intuition method". The only sound/position I have active in my mind is the one at n back, and then if what shows up matches that, I hit "match".

At 9:30 he describes ‘attention hopping’ which isnt helpful for WM improvement, but rehearsal is helpful. (Rapidly repeat the last n string of letters with your inner voice)
“There are four types of strategy training that are often used with dual n-back training. They can all improve n-back level performance. But only the first - rehearsal - is useful for expanding working memory capacity.” - www.iqmindware.com/iq-mindware/training-strategies/

You can't increase your IQ, you can train yourself at becoming very good in tasks that measure IQ, and therefore modify your results, but you will lose the increased performance once you stop doing the tasks regularly, and it won't increase your IQ. Apps and programms that tell you otherwise are likely to be a scam

@@storiesgcentral but you pretty much only use the working memory span that your train with the dual n back, in the dual n back, holding that many items is extremly rarely needed (depending on what you do). I really doubt that this really increases fluid intelligence, seems like a convenient marketing promise to make, but to be fair, it seems like a fun way to challenge your mind and it can defenetly not hurt and will have some positive effects.

ooooo boyeeee, I tried an IQ test exactly 30 days ago and I got a 90 IQ result (which for some unknown reason felt disappointing to me) then I went only to find that dualnback may be a plausible remedy for IQ corroboration, my current peak at dual N back is 8 n back (at day 30) and I can comfortably play at 6~7 n back (depends because some days are just bad) and now I just tried the same IQ test and I got 110 IQ as a result, *me who was thinking I'd score lesser because during the test I felt I wasn't getting any logic*, THIS STUFF IS REAL, even if it wasn't, if this is your only chance to boost that IQ don't let anything old you back! nice video btw.

3 years ago i've tried doing the N-back
And i rapidly saw the improvement
I'm a type of person that has a lack of working memory
When i am doing a task that is need for something else to work I often find myself wondering "Why am I doing this already? What should i do next ?"
To counter that i took the habit to write a todo list so i can come back to it when im lost
But with Dual N-back after like 7 days I saw such an improvement that it was chocking
It was felt like a revelation, i could do things i could'nt in the past and do it naturaly
    Sort of liberating
Edit : It might have been because im working my memory in a different way
I'm not focused on keeping a list of the previous N-elements in my head, I am more like "feeling" that the N-back word is the same that the actual
Well im not 100% feeling everything, its sort of a mix in between feeling the thing and having a list in the head. But more orientated in the feeling (as i struggle to keep the list haha)
    Hope it was comprehensible xD
Having a strategy to be more efficient seems to be an inefficient thing for training

@jcorb Well, I tried to remember the sequence but i really struggled at it
So i did kind of a mix, i tried to remember the sequence but i was also relying on my intuition to counter my struggleness
It served me well, in fact when I work im not actively thinking about everything. I often switch from one task to another instinctively and working it trought the N-Back sort of unlocked more opportunities to use my instinct :)

Nice channel. The Human Benchmark was a good choice. I appreciated it because it's a simple app that doesn't exploit people like the typical mom making her umpteenth New Year's resolution.
However, I have an issue: the mobile app lacks a way to create an account to permanently store records and resume from where I left off - for example, starting from the 10th stage of the number game instead of going back to square one.
Are there any superior app alternatives that don't target the average person with trivial challenges like "1 + 2 = ?" or "find the color," falsely implying progress and making them pay?

Doing this game for 45 days. Hoping to start new year with smarter brain. My iq now is probably 95. I have a hard time with critical thinking assignments in English class. I am hoping to boost iq to 115 or higher. Doing this everyday for 25 minutes along with healthy diet/habits, omega 3 and supplements, and lots and lots of cardio (2miles - 5k everyday). Just playing this is not enough. You need to incorporate it with other healthy habits. Not saying you don’t do that because I believe you do. I am just going to play it for longer and have more modest expectations. Hoping to get to D=7 by after Christmas. On Dec 31, I will post a results video of dualnback and 5k running everyday results. 🧠 💪🏻 let’s do this. 2022 strong. Let’s see if I can get to iq of 105 by end of challenge and then to 110 or higher by end of January 2022. Also, I will be trying my best not to do any techniques like chunking which kind of ruins the whole point of the game. In order to prevent that from happening, I have the transition speed (the speed from one audio/visual change to the next) to a fast pace (somewhere around 1.5-2 seconds. Personally, I think this person knows what he is doing, but is setting an unrealistic goal. You don't have a max memory cap. Sometimes for certain people, it takes more time (like more than a month) to raise. Also, you should do healthy and other brainy, productive, or mindful habits. Just playing this game alone is too static and repetitive. Update 2022: I failed to complete the challenge. I am redoing it now finally..

I think the reorganization method is more effective for gains because you are using your brain to manipulate new and old information. That’s just my thought tho idk if it’s true. Does anyone else do the reorganization method or is it just me?

One point could also be the following: You trained dual ~7-back, but tested single ~11-back. The question remains wether "m-n-back" enhances the capability for overall mental processing in the long run.

Chunking is no good, rehearsing is no good for the gain. It has to be intuitive. So says Susanne Jaeggi.
And I may be wrong but the test you used at humanbechmark seems to be more about short term memory than working memory (the first is just a component of the second, and the correlation between speed and IQ is only about 0.50), not the same thing. Anyway, I think that with an intuitive dual n back approach the gains would have been significant. Your mind would 'blink' less and less.

Furthermore, there is another method: strengthening mental abilities through relational training (SMART) which shows consistent increases in IQ (SD 15) of 23 points on average, the exercise consists of understanding basic conceptual relationships between two or more things. Secondly, there is a plant extract called bacopa monnieri which shows statistically significant increases in working memory, the mechanism of action is hypothesized to arise from bacosides a and b which eliminate free radicals, reduce beta amyloid proteins and increase dendritic branching on hippocampal neurons. Maybe if you combine bacopa monnieri, smart, and the gabor stimulus exercise you can increase your IQ by 40+ points since they all seem to be augmenting cognition in different ways.
