When I was a young boy about 7 years old my mom would get together with 2 of her friends in the morning to drink coffee and knit. I loved watching them because they all did it differently. I now know that Lee knit left handed, Cindy knit English style and my mom knit continental. They were always laughing so I thought knitting must be fun. I asked my mom to teach me so she did. when I was 12 or so I taught myself to crochet from a craft book because mom didn't crochet. I am now 66 years old and continue doing both. I am at my most calm when knitting or crocheting. I love knitting socks and sweaters and crocheting baptismal gowns and vintage doilies and tableclothes. My mom has been gone for many years but when I knit using her vintage needles I am connected to her and I am once again a little boy sitting in her lap while she guides my hands teaching me how to knit...

I have one of my Grandmother's Crocheting Needles. It's a Great Treasure. Priceless. I'm 63 and that Crochet Needle is Very Old. I was so glad when my Mother gave me Her Mother's Crochet Needle. It's such a treasure!!!

Hah. I too am 66, was taught to knit and crochet (English Knitting) by my grandmother as a young boy. Currently I'm working on an Aran sweater and a blanket - also using my late mother's needles and notions. Nowadays I knit continental/Norwegian style as I find it suits me better. Good to know there are kindred spirits out there :) More men should knit and crochet. It's very mindful and relaxing - the perfect way to de-stress. I usually have two projects on the go at any time, one fairly complicated for when I'm in the mood for counting and concentrating (currently the Aran sweater) and one very simple (the blanket) for when I just want to keep my hands busy and switch my brain off!

I'm 71years old and I was taught to crochet by my best friend who happens to be my husband's cousin and also best friend. He had been taught how to crochet by his father. My last big crochet project is a n Arran style jacket for myself. It's done using traditional Scottish Arran cable shapes I also k it and two days after completing a jacket for my friend and as I am watching this I have cast on a topen down sweater for the man who taught me how to crochet

    • @debbiefox6846

@@FiftiesForwardKnitting started out as a man's occupation. Men have done crochet, knitting, tatting, lace making, and weaving for hundreds of years. Seriously, there used to be Men's hand knitting guilds that only produced socks and fine hosiery-for the likes of Queen Elizabeth I. The idea men didn't crochet till recently is a sexist notion really. Looking into history you will see it's been going on for probably even thousands of years.
If you think of the Hand Made Fishing Nets that men have also made for centuries you will see that they are basically crochet & Tunisian crochet stitches that are made and still made to this day with a shuttle. What I think you are noticing is maybe less men being ashamed to talk about it. Knitting can and has and is easy to replicate on a machine. Crochet on the other hand is only done by hand.

The colours of the February square remind me of spring time colours in the garden. Crocus, Forsythia, daffodils, snow drops, the shoots new growth, etc, etc, etc. Isn’t it cool how each of us, sees it in a new way? Anyway you look at it, it’s lovely 🥰🩷🇨🇦

The stiches are done well. The multicolored one could have some other interchangeable solid color added that have shimmer to expand the colors. I have worked with crochet for over 50 yrs. It is a great lap project while watching TV or on a road trip. These blankets do keep you warm but the washing of them can make them break down. I moved over to scrappy quilting which is faster and still relaxing. I am glad to see that you are male and have acquired a skill set to do this because this will not go to waste to know how to produce the things you need weather it is gifted or gifted to yourself with purpose. Keep crocheting because as long as there is a chill in the air there is a need for something to keep you toasty warm. Congrats great job. Enjoy Portugal a good friend of mine left the US to live someplace else and she loves the country.

The project with the stained glass yarn colors would be good for a carry-along project (or car project), meaning all you carry is one skein and a hook in a ziploc baggie. Then when you unexpectedly have to wait sometime you have someone small to work on. I get a lot done that way.

For the stained glass blanket, you could look into blocking the squares. Blocking can help with the drape of the finished fabric but also generally causes the squares to grow a bit!

I'm a Master Gardener from Oregon who is also a textile artist. It's the middle of March here & we hit 71 degrees. At this time of year, 63 feels warm but family in Southern California find 63 in March cold. I have weaned my indoor/outdoor plants down to one as I'm older but this one is a monster 60 lb clivia. My husband is in charge of moving it & I know when I die it's the first thing he's throwing out. The next thing are my craft supplies including bins & bins of material & yarn. I am not very fond of granny squares & am always looking for new ways to camouflage them. These are perfect (I didn't know they were granny squares till you pointed it out). Hope you enjoyed Portugal (very jealous) & keep on crafting/gardening. P.S. don't respond to this - it takes away from crafting. 😊

Today is March 29 and just found your channel on my feed. Very glad I did. Those blankets are amazing! I love how soft the colors and stitches are. You are not out to please the masses, just yourself. If someone else happens to get joy out of it, awesome. That is how it should be. I think that yarn arts are a dying out. Everyone thinks it is for old people only. It is for humans of all ages and backgrounds. The joy and pride in making something that you want, the way you want it, is so satisfying and calming. I did not know that existed. Although I am a bit out of touch with knitting and crocheting. I am more into sewing at the moment. I live in the UK and retired at the end of January 2024. Yes! I love that yarn from Turkey. I have used it for various projects including multiple beanies, a bag and I still have 5 balls left. You're right, it is so soft and has a wonderful sheen. Love your work. I just found your channel. You're my type of person...crochet AND gardening. Looking forward to following you. G'day from Sydney Australia 🇦🇺 😀

For the rainbow square, you could alternate with solid color squares. Check out similar quilt layouts. Like "trip around the world".

Thanks for sharing your projects and keeping me company as I crochet on a shawl. For you beautiful rainbow square blanket, you could make all large squares and maybe even do some in wither black or white and inter mix them when you join or sew the squares together. Just a thought. Enjoy your trip!

I just saw a video where Mama Lama Kayla did three large granny squares and joined them then went around all three to get the length she wanted. Personally, I see black around them....yum...like a stained glass window. I'm a brand new subscriber.. Karen

Don’t give up on the rainbow. It’s beautiful. See how it looks after you get through the skeins that you have on hand. You might find that you like the size or you might find a different purpose for the blanket at the smaller size.

Have you considered making a corner-to-corner afghan? They're great, because you can decide what length and width to make it as you go. Also, there's no joining of squares, so there's less work.
