The song is about drugs being a puppeteer of an addicts life and controlling them. The whole tempo of the song and change ups are to show how you would come down, crave, get high , then crash and repeat drugs! You should watch the lyrics video and you will truly appreciate this song.
The intro music you've heard was an excerpt from To Live is To Die as dedication to their fallen bandmate Cliff Burton who passed in 86.
Nothing will ever beat Metallica 1989
True! I saw that Justice tour in 89 and it was pure POWER!
@@stevelarson3391 Metallica 1986 was pretty great…but I think there is a special venom in Het’s voice during this show that just adds an whole level of malevolence to this show. It’s particularly exemplified during ‘The Thing That Should Not Be’. They’re full of booze and uppers and you see that Satanic glimmer in Hetfield’s eye as he sings that song… it’s dead fuckin magical, man. Just bloody godlike.
Twas a miracle.
It's because of Cliffs death made them more aggressive
@@bullymaguire8458true, it was anger, sorrow, grief, confusion, etc. They got through it, but it cost them Jason.
Im so glad that someone's first time hearing this masterpiece of a song is the live performance from this concert
Metallica in Seattle 1989 is the pinnacle of all music 🔥🔥🔥🤘🤘🤘. Unmatched….above and beyond. Level of energy, musical talent, instrumentation and stage presence cannot be matched
Lol
He is totaly right.
if they did a 4k restoration and put it out in theaters and on blu-ray they would make so much FUCKING money. Why don't they know this?
Times when Metallica were the fastest band ever. My favorite era. And so fucking talented everyone of them on their field.
Never the fastest, just the best
@@timduchnowski3116 Nah man, just nah. They were the fastest on the planet earth. Piriod.
They were the fastest! You know if you lived in the era.
It's called 'headbanging' & the song you heard before was called 'Nothing Else Matters' and the opening of this performance was from the instrumental 'To Live is to Die' from the album '...And Justice for All.' The rest is Master of Puppets from the album Master of Puppets.
Metallica is part of the reason GenX has neck problems. Just ask Jason.
Lars is one of the most influential metal drummers of all time. He may not be top tier technically, but he plays what serves the songs the best instead of just mindless blast beats and crazy fills. In the 80s he was considered decently technical, but later has regressed due to not practicising as much anymore as he has nothing left to prove.
yep. He's Lars Ulrich of Metallica. Legacy set.
He plays with heart
James is better if you've ever seen him get behind the drum set.
@@nozy5765 he plays with feel
I'm no drummer but I know he can drum better than most people? He's just not Nick Menza or Dave Lombardo so people make fun of him very unfairly, considering he is one of a few people responsible for Metallica and this kind of music generally.
Growing up in the 80s Metallica is what kept me alive. In those dark times listening to Metallica just pulled me out of those moments. The one song that really helped me pull through is Fade to Black. Very dark, but the way they do the song just filled me with energy.
Went to this concert when they came here in 89. It was amazing, and Im pretty sure my ears are still ringing.
Metallica at it's Apex right here. The raw explosive energy and power when the song kicks in gives me chills every time!!
This is the peak of Metal
The thing that should not be from the same concert. Underrated masterpiece, arguably the best song from Master of Puppets.
First time hearing Lars being called one of the best drummers in the world
😂😂😂
lol right? They haven't been around long enough. Not that I disagree as far as Lar's composition chops are concerned, but. They don't yet understand why Lars changes his tempo so often ha
Lars in 86-91 was kinda nuts
@@RoadLessTraveledMedia Lars was a good drummer, not the best in the world but no amateur drummer could play like Lars back in the 80’s
@@holdtightadele8017 I don't think he gets enough credit for his writing chops. He's Metallica's song designer in chief.
Metallica has been brought to you by-Mesa Boogie.
Without the MkIIc+, this would never sound so epic.
BTW- I was 17, and went to both shows.
The beginning of this video is a part of the song called "To Live Is to die" which is a tribute to their previous bassist who died a few years earlier
The Kings! 🤘
You need to watch Cliff Burton the original base guitarist he passed away in a horrible way on the tour bus. PLEASE SHOW HIM 🙏❤. MUCH LOVE TO YOU AND YOUR FAMILY 💕BRANDI MODRAK 💕
Congratulations. You are now fledgling Metalheads/Head Bangers. To become "members in good standing" you must now dive down the Metallica rabbit-hole.
Give the official video a look. It was filmed about 10-12 years ago (live) and is interspersed with footage from a movie they produced.
The energy with which they play and the interactions with the crowd are STILL as off the hook as it was back in the day.
Moscow 1991 is also an incredible show (my favorite is Harvester Of Sorrow).
Good luck on your journey.
This song is about drug addiction if anyone didn't know. Your daily drug of choice is your master....smashing your dreams
Do fade to black
One of the best fade to black versions. They were really monsters behind the instruments during this time !!🤟
Metallica holds the record of crowd size. Set in Moscow 1991 estimated 1.6 MILLION attended right after the soviet union fell. Amazing videos on youtube to checkout.🤘😎
It was a festival btw, so not only Metallica
Man said nothing even matters 😂
Your last note was on point bro! So true!
Love the facial reactions to James Hetfield’s swearing and growling 😂
Your differentiation of musicians (art is built into a musician naturally, IMO )and artists that don't know a bass guitar from a stand electric guitar show off a deep level of thinking. Wish there were more people like you guys in the world.
Thank you so much, this comment made our day!
every time i listen to this now im gonna wanna find vecna myself
You guys must do Welcome Home Sanitarium from this same show. It's a bit slower. My favorite song! Or you can see them a bit later I recommend The Day that Never Comes live in Nimes France 2009, it's an A-M-A-Z-I-N-G performance!!!
I agree completely and thank you for noting the difference between musicians and jerks.
86 baby
Said a mouthful Amen
"Wake up FUCK!!!!" -James Hetfield, 1989
The intro is To Live Is To Die
Live Moscow show 1991..... Enter Sandman and Creeping Death
great review. thank you. the netflix tv show "Stranger things" might be bringing some traffic to this song. it featured in their season 4 finale. it brought me to you
Lol, I can see your halo light 😀
Another live performance from them I think you should check out is Anesthesia (Pulling Teeth). It's VERY bass heavy, but it's one of their best in my opinion.
*headbanger 👍
3:42 No man, it's called *HEAD BANGING!* lol
There we go! hahaha thanks!
9:39 - James punches the crash cymbal, it put Lars' drumming off beat but it still worked, James looked at Lars hoping he gets back in sync, he did but James' hand hurts a bit and you can tell that as he is sloppy for a second but the reactor's voices hid it a lot...lol It is subtle. This is the power of Metallica on 1980s cocaine, everyone!
There where you were singing "master", the lyrics had changed to "laughter".
This song changes time signature many times and some of them are 21/32 so it can be a big challenge to learn to play vs the original 4/4
We miss you Cliff! 🤘
Yeahhhh Metallica the best and biggest metal band ever....💪👍
And don’t forget if Metallica can get through 1986, 1992, 2000-2003, and 2019, you can get through anything. RIP Cliff B.
The drums are in 4/4 timing, but the pauses and the fact the picking in the guitar riff are somewhat uniquely offbeat is why the timing sounds off, but Lars is playing mostly standard 4/4 (1-2-3-4-1-2-3-4)
If you count along 1 2 3 4 during the song (with the drums only, tune out the guitar) you'll catch it, it's all in 4/4
Lars is a top drummer but I've heard he's not the most likeable guy with regular run ins with former and current members.
"One" official music video. It's their first video, a sad topic, but a face melter when it comes to the headbanging.
Also check "Enter Sandman" Live from Moscow. It's the first concert after the cold war and the fall of the Soviet Union.
Battery and Creeping Death from the same concert
I was just thinking that MASTER OF PUPPETS and MORPHINE by Michael Jackson share a similar topic and a similar structure. Both are about drugs / addiction and go very hard. Also, both songs have this cloudlike middle part (where the drugs are being consumed / give some dangerous solace).
Rock on roll The best
Watch creeping death from the same concert Seattle 89 concert you can't go wrong with that concert
Wow! Your motivational point was profound - if only, people today can get back to that, I already dug Metallica, and "Master of Puppets."
🤘🏼'HEADBANGING'🤘🏼
Yeah-the time signature during the verse section is literally uncountable. I listened to a jazz-trained musician and producer analyse this tune, and even he couldn’t figure out how to count that bit you’re talking about. Good ear, though, catching that! You a drummer, yourself, mate?
Are you ready for my recommendations 🤔 Battery, For whom the bell tolls, To live is to die, Orion, Fight fire with fire... Enjoy 😎
@10:10 see the most Epic James Hetfield Yeah of all time
Next step could be "One", but you need to pay attention to the lyrics. React to the original video. Be safe and be good
You are 100% correct. Lars as a drummer is unique that he accents the "off-beat" So when you were saying 3 count instead of 4 count... I appreciate that you noticed that. He accents the 3rd or 5th beat, but still the odd number... I love that you caught that. Because of that... I am looking forward to looking at more of your critiques. That one observation proves to me that you "really" listen
THANK YOU FAM!!!!!!
Headbanging
Awesome video guys 🔥 pull up lyrics before so you know the song
Just the best metal band ever, by the way they still going strong this days 40+ !!!
40+?
How's about they'll be 60 next year.
I meant 40 years…:)
@@fritzburbank935 metallica the band is 40+
@@kuplung22
Gee whiz no kidding
My recommendation is creeping death / Moscow 1991
Metallica "ONE" Music Video with the old movie as the background. Big sad story, warning that it is a little advanced.
Guy's i know you have listened and reacted to Bohemiam rhapsody by Queen before, but you haven't reacted to 60,000 fans at a Greendays concert sing Bohemiam Rhapsody please can you check it out, you will be very pleasantly surprized .
the rhythmic pattern you hear in the song is a 4/4 count and then you get a 2/4 count every few bars
If you would like to react to an artist you might not have heard of, I recommend Aesthetic Perfection with Bark at the Moon
Great reaction ! Would be great if you could do Creeping Death by Metallica Moscow 1991 as well
Nice choice to live is to die Segway into puppets is so epic
“I need words” it’s not a rap song 😂
Now do Creeping Death Moscow 1991
Don't worry you didn't watch the wrong video lol. This concert is one of the best by Metallica
Lars is Lars. Check out Danny Carry of Tool or The Rev of Avenged Sevenfold if you want great drummers. Or farther back ... John Bonham, Keith Moon, Buddy Rich
REACT TO METALLICA , BATTERY (LIVE 1989)
I need some words.
Enough words for you brother?
Next time. Pay more attention to the music as well.
Rock n' Roll is a trip.
Just go with the flow.
Lars was highly under-rated as a drummer. I'm not sure why but he was criticized for his playing. I always thought he was amazing and I have been lucky enough to see Metallica live 5 times. Always an incredible show and loved Lars nailing every hit. I certainly could not do all those fast songs for 2 hours.
He gets criticized because his tempo is absolute dog shit. AJFA was his most complicated drumming and the only album I ever had trouble with learning.
@@adampennington8954 So your logic is, complicated drum parts = good. Simple drum parts = bad. So dumb
I love Kirk most, though I love them all
I have only one name: Jason Newsted 🤤
5:36 funny you should say that because he's widely hated upon his drumming at the moment
He is an easy target because sometimes he gets lazy.
But when he puts his heart into it he's one of the best around.
Are you sure ? I know he's widely hated because of that Napster issue.
I believe that made people hate him overall.
Here is one good metallica song:
ua-cam.com/video/qdlQyNe_9tE/v-deo.html
rip cliff
Does anyone happen to know what happened to them I think they are a very cute couple and good reactors
Thanks for watching! Life got really busy so we decided to step away from UA-cam.
@@TheCottons understandable.
Check out Neal peart
Best drummer ever
Have a listen to Slayer Repentless.
most of the song is in 4/4, that one bar you are hearing is in 5/8... kind of. Going super technical its not even 5/8 but you can look that up.
By the wider metal world lars is not well regarded as a drummer. He gets the job done and that's about it.
msaterpiece
Actually Master of Puppets is too main stream for my taste (dont get me wrong its a good metal song).
Ok XxBlackMetalLord69xX
The instrumental at the beginning is not part of the song. It was a tribute to the original bass player who passed. And while it is a cool instrumental, it kind of takes away from the story behind master of puppets.
Metallica became more aggressive at 1989 because of their beloved friend Cliffs death .
Hi can you please react to Taylor Swift Reputation album🥰
Please don't post such things on a metal reaction, Ugh!!!
@@metalmellie4371 why?
The verses are made up of 4/4 and 5/8 bars with some 2/4 thrown in the on the chorus so it's got a odd beat
Yes he is considered to be one of the greatest drummers of all time. If you listen to the song called "Fuel" you will understand why.
Ah yes, nothing even matters
Great song from a very good album.
At this time Lars was at his prime and a solid drummer. World's greatest? Nope...
I could mention 50 who are better than him.. yeah even some female ones. In late 80s he kind of surfed on their success, and got more acclaim from it. He was also a massive douche. During the follow up "...and justice for all", he turned down the bassist Jason's channel to the point it was hard to hear what he was playing.
Lol
Nothing even matters
Nothing even matters ?
Is nothing else matters get your foxs right
The guy is not a metal fan so he was close enough give him a break.
hey my channel lars never , never a drummer top 10 kkkkkkk, he realy dont catch the virtuose, try portnoy, neil peart, jason rullo, niko, mario, etc please
Listen to studio version first. This will be just noise for first time listen
Is Lars the best drummer?! 😂🤣
“is the drummer considered one of the best drummers?” uhhhh
In performances like this and albums like this the answer is yes.
He becomes complacent and lazy at times. But when he tries he is one of the best.
@@fritzburbank935 he was definitely a good drummer, but he was definitely not 'one of the best'. i actually like lars' drumming style and think it fits the riffs, but i just dont think he has ever been anywhere near one of the best drummers
But still way better than most🤗 Alot of people critices Lars, but he still need to follow the band when they are out of rythem, and nobody talk about that😉
@@2200bronx
I'll take lars any day of the week.
Is Niko McBrain the best?
Is Kirk Hammett the best guitarist?
Nobody in that band is the best.
But the chemistry they create as individuals makes them the best.
Great drummer in Slayer but that band blows lol.
