  • Witness the versatility of the 2023 KTM 1290 Super Adventure R as we explore its capabilities on various terrain from Fukushima mud to single trails and sweeping open tracks made more difficult by our wicked hangovers after going looking for a country music band.
We put the KTM through nearly everything you find on an adventure ride and it reaffirmed that, while the mid-sized are the most outright capable...there is still room in the adventure world for the giants.

A good friend and I bought 2022 and have put on 15,000kms touring two up with our wives. We ride a lot of gravel roads up and down mtn passes. We had 2018 versions before these. We added hard panniers, slip on Arrow mufflers, S version windscreen, many different tires, and believe these are the most versatile motos available.

Great review, I ride the 1190s 2013 with about 130,000 on it all maintenance done no problems or failures, thankfully. I ride as much logging roads and 2 track as we find and qjite alot 2 up. 1290R likely next bike and also agree with you shortcummings...windsheild pegs grips etc. 1290R should feel lighter with gas tank config and 21 inch front, also providing better tire choices. Good job from BC Canada

I have been considering selling my adventure ready Norden 901 for a 2023 SAR. I really enjoyed your wonderful video, no sillyness, no bullshit just real life experience and honest opinions. As a photographer I really thought you produced a stellar video with great cinematography, aerial clips and even the music was good. I am interested to know how you found the stock seat for comfort as that is one thing that the Norden has perfected as I can ride long days (with stops) and not worry about my arse feeling numb!! Cheers :)

Enjoyed your video immensely, thank you for making it! Love my 1290, still sore from the last time I had to pick it up on a single track, but it was a great day, also perfectly handles a full day of highway/freeway with luggage and a passenger, or a ride around the twisties with one of my kids if I want it to. It is ridiculously big and heavy, but hilariously fun.

Thanks for this great vid. Really enjoyable watch and great review. I've had my 1290SAR since 2021. I love it for everything from a run down the shop to a run across Europe. It has it all for me, track and road. All I've added is power parts; tall screen (for road), heated grips, frame guards, ergo seat, quick shift, Rally mode, kriega soft luggage and Akrapovic can. I want for nothing more👌

Loved the vid, brilliant. I have the 1290 SAR, and rode the ACT Pyrenees last week. The big bike ate up the 900 highway miles from UK to Cap De Creus, Spain start point. 140kph on cruise for hours/days/blur, didnt budge off it. Additions to the bike. 40mm bar risers, tall windscreen AND spoiler. Garmin Zumo XT and mount, good navi set up. Arrow Sonora Titanium can (lighter, better sound, more power). TKC80s for the hoops, absolutely awesome (in the wet she does like to slip around so the more bite the better). Upper crash bars. Bark busters and flick up levers. Stone guard over that pricey headlight. Higher enduro seat as was too cramped on the factory seat. Flick over cheapie mirrors, came in handy. At 6'6'' and 120 kegs, you may of worked out from the list I need the space and size. Go the big Kato! @chenza11- noted on the rims, I have seen them battered before, check👍👍

Thanks for the great video yet again, I love your content.😎👍
I’m not as seasoned as most are and I’ve only had my 1290SA-R since January but, I honestly love it the way it is and only really plan on adding the rally mode to the bike and better foot pegs. I will be getting a new windshield and blinker due to a spectacular OFF on my recent 2,700 mille trip which led me through amazing off road sections of Utah.
That said, this bike is very crash worthy in an off roading environment. The crashbars held up very well. Just a minor scratch on the radiator shroud plastics as the bike almost flipped over. The windshield broke, I’m assuming, by my knee or boot as i was ejected over the bars😂. I Dusted off picked the bike up and finished the rest of the trip with no problems, about 1,300 miles.
In all I am very pleased with this bike. I had a Multistrada Enduro Pro and Africa Twin previously, the KTM by far suits my riding style in every way, I will be keeping this one for a long time.

And agree with your changes, I've changed the exhaust, seat, footpegs, and screen plus a Rottweiler GPS mount after the first 5000kms and those changes have made it super comfortable for long distance touring.

I had the 1190 Adventure R which was a rocket ship & a joy to ride 'most of the time'! The day we hit some tricky slippy & rutted trails & I had to pick it up @20 times signalled the end of our relationship, especially being a little height challenged at 173cm! But its a great bike if you accept where it excels & ride to your skills (leg reach!), & if you plan to hit the tricky stuff regularly keep up your gym membership. 😆 Nice video 👍

Put on a Puig wind deflector to the R screen and it sorts the wind noise beautifully, works for me at 6"3. Other mods Akrapovic exhaust, Black Dog bash plate & side stand larger foot, Krieger soft luggage, Motoz Rallz, heated grips/seat, Rag Guard radiator guard & fold up levers, rally pegs.

What an absolutely awesome video, thank for making this one. This bike just continues to amaze me also, its way more capable than many a man.
I had a recent trip through Morocco on my 21 SAR, the front rims are made of cheese so I bought a set of Haan wheels with Excel rims, I fitted a much chunkier bash plate from SW Motech and modified it to use the stock crash bars which i think do a great job of protecting the bike and not bending the frame at the mounting locations. I put a Touratech Comfort 1 piece seat on cause the Rally Seat looks hideous and pushes you onto the tank and for HWY dead uncomfortable. I put the PP soft luggage bars on the rear and fitted a Perun rear plate with Kriega hook points and Givi top Box mounts. I put a HexCan in the system and run heated gear and a set of fog lights up front from Denali on some KTM mounts. I use a Touratech GPS mount with their cradle and an XT2. Mitas Rally E13 up front and a Motoz ADV rear. I upped the spring rates to carry luggage and finally some Rally footpegs cause on my 690 rally replica they were just some comfortable.

Nice video. I have the 1290R and have done pretty much what you said, I have rally pegs, flat seat, full handguards, heated grips and Akrapovic end can. I have the touring screen, racks and boxes for road use and kriega bags for off road. I bought a second set of wheels and tyres for off road and fitted the extra, upper crash bars because I'm a coward. The result is a very versatile bike that if you drop it on your own you're farked 😂
