I’ve had the V4S now for about 4 months and it consistently gets 42 miles per gallon and I’ve put several thousand miles on it. With a nearly six gallon tank that’s plenty of range for me. You guys must have been riding it hard to get that poor of mileage. As a note, the Ducati only requires 90 RON fuel (85 octane) vs the KTM which requires 95 RON (91 Octane). Yet another fantastic Knox video. Always testing the limits of how to convey the passion of riding to their viewers. We absolutely love this channel and your work. In terms of what bike? KTM hands down. Mainly because of the harm Ducati is doing to MotoGP by fielding 8-9 bikes against the weakened Japanese manufacturers, as well as their participation in the Climate Cult. For now our choice is the KTM, hoping that it doesn’t get infected with the climate cancer. If that time sadly comes, we’ll just stop buy either brand.
The KTM has to be the best value for comparable performance. Love my new 2022 SAS, proved itself on the Euro trip I finished yesterday. (And I am an ex BMW GSA owner).
I just finished making this difficult decision a month ago. I went with the KTM mainly due to price and I thought that things would also be cheaper to replace if I did break something while entertaining myself with the super adventure. The way the V4S drinks fuel was also a deciding factor. I felt like all I was thinking about where do I get gas next. You always sort of have to plan ahead if you plan off road adventures with the Ducati. Both bikes are super fun to ride. If they would have been the same price I would have gone with the Ducati.
@@gcosmos960 It is indeed better bang for your buck. Honestly after watching this video a second time these guys really have a very good review here. They pretty much hit all of the key points. The second ride I took the KTM out after buying it I was just in amazement with how effortless it was to toss around. I felt like a kid again, even doing 2 small jumps with it. Slow speed handling I give the edge to the KTM. It just feels so much lighter while screwing at slower speeds. I agree with the reviewers as well with what they comment about the Midas tires letting the bike down. The Ducati fells better on the twisties and I think it boils down to the tires.
@@andymckenzie5484 thank you for taking the time to respond!!! I will be test riding in the weekend and comparing against the XR, V4s. My heart already says KTM. Thank you once again and I will follow your advice on tires.
I have the Desertx and just came off a 4 day tour and put it in to get an alarm fitted. I got a loaner … My experience was very different. The 4s felt significantly more clunky than the x going through the gears and going on/off the throttle. Maybe this is different at 7-9k revs … but around urban environments … the x was way more enjoyable to ride. Also with cruise control on … the 4s surges slightly back and forwards… it’s noticeable and off putting. On the x the cruise control was smooth. The tyres on the 4s are road tyres and no way designed for any off-road .. this bike on stock tyres is only for the road … where it excels over the x. But the x is pretty decent… I’d say closer to a true adventure super bike. The only noticeable benefit I saw in the 4s is that it’s weight feels much lower than the x and the smaller tyres and fork angle makes it much easier to move around when stopped … at lights … backing up etc. in short I don’t think it’s worth the extra nz$15k over the $28k Desertx. I’d recommend you test the Desertx as well as the 4s before you purchase :)
I'm an off-road guy who races enduro bikes. I own ADV bikes for fun when I have a chance. The more I watch videos about the 1290 ADV S the more I think the Street version of this bike is more appropriate for me than my T7 and Africa Twin!
I think I would go with the KTM. That fuel range difference and price is too much to ignore. I would go KTM and tick all the option boxes. Even add a set of extra wheels with knobbly tyres and still be cheaper than the Ducati. Great comparison.
My super duke gt managed 267 miles on a tank and took 21.4 litres on refill on a recent tour of Scotland. Admittedly mostly steady riding and with an unexpected detour meaning some very economical riding in order to reach our destination. Even with a mixture of fast, normal and steady riding a range of 230-250 miles was easily possible. It was as fast or faster than any of the other bikes including a couple of v4 Ducatis. 1250 gs and a mapped and decatted MT10 to name a few. The Ducati is lovely and in many ways and very desirable but with it’s price and fuel range I could definitely not live with it. The KTM has had a few minor issues most recently a faulty rear suspension electronic adjuster which if not fixable could cost up to £600 to replace but as I only paid 13K for it new in 2019 it with still be worth getting it done and keeping it.
I have had the 1290 Adventure. But am over the 19" wheel bike for anything we do (My wife will be onboard 85% ALL roadways). Now I am on the same SD GT as you. Yet--I ordered a Pikes Peak because....nobody knows.... Maybe I turned age 63 and: Oh hell with it--you only live once. It will have to be good, which by all reports is and delivers maybe a more SD GT sporting road experience. The GT does get really good fuel mileage (240 is a easy)which didn't matter too much as we "tour" less than 200 miles a day normally. If the the fuel mileage gets me down I see revised "test mule" spy photos of a more recent V.3 GT, which would incorporate many of the motor/frame/swingarm improvements of the newest SDR. That should be pretty sweet and I could likely get into one of those if KTM decided to issue it USA. Could likely step into the a new GT for about what 2-year old Pikes Peak could trade in for.
Best ADV review I have seen yet....Love that you took them to the limit on the off-road section. I am a novice off-road, but have some 1250GSA miles on the Colorado BDR and I don't think my V4S is any less capable (in more experienced hands....). If you were buying tires for the V4S, what would you put on it to maintain street manners and improve your off-road experience? Thanks again for the wonderful review
Many thanks, really appreciate it! I would consider something like a Pirelli Scorpion Rally. We used them on the Norden 901 launch and really good, loads of grip on the road and decent for an adventure bike off road. Aaron KNOX
Last weekend I had my sons Pikes Peak Multistrada in the garage and as the owner of a 2022 KTM SAS it was great to appreciate the different aspects between the two. The Ducati is beautifully engineered and put together where the KTM seems more "value engineered" especially simple things like fasteners and panel fit etc. In saying this I prefer the V-twin engine of the KTM, the fuel consumption and the fuel range of the KTM over the Multi'. I can't afford the difference in price or running costs of the Multi but if I could I would still take the KTM but they are both great machines
Astonishing, good, full and professional review and a great help thanks. KTM comes out as the best value for money option. But having the money available, better to go voor the absolute best and accept the fuel consumption of the Ducati four-cylinder. Although it’s a drawback for driving in environments with few gas stations.
I love my 1290 KTM. One of the first things I had to do though was change the seat. KTMs, every single one of them has a horrible seat. Like sitting on two by fours. I have two other KTMs, a 300 EXC, and a 500excf. All three of my KTMs have seat concepts on them now and what a great difference that made. I agree with the negative take on the tires on the KTM. The Continentals that came with mine are pretty good on the street, but not so good off road. You simply can't go wrong with the KTM. But that Ducati looks awful nice as well. This was a great video and a excellent comparison between the two top adventure bikes.
I’d reckon the TC on the KTM would feel much closer to the Ducati’s if it were shod with Pirellis or another type that is not at a disadvantage (in the wet, as stated in your test) like the stock ones. Electronics can only compensate up to a certain point after all. Both are excellent bikes, and it’s nice to finally see a comparison between them. I own the previous generation 1290 SA-S by the way. Great review!
I don't see the super low mpg, as a Multi V4S owner I'm getting over 250mi and that's cruising and slightly throttle happy, the range is great, yea maybe not a GS1250 or similar but still reasonable
Thanks for feedback Seth. Of course its possible we had a bad bike...? But we did around 700 miles and that we averaged 31mpg, over a mixture of road, motorway and off road. Thanks, Aaron KNOX
I bought a GS1250R and a 1290 SAS. Kept the GS for about 4 weeks sold it. The SAS was so much better to ride. I've ridden the Multi as well. The electronics are better on the Multi, but I tend to set it the way I like it and leave it alone, so all the adjustments weren't worth the premium price.
Most detailed review ever made on the top of the line adventure bikes ❤👌.If that ktm 1290 had more off road focused knobby tyres things would have been different I guess due to it's marvelous off-road capability. For the price ktm offers & low maintenance cost I am sold to that. Unfortunately here in India Ktm adventure 1290 is not available 🥲 & hope it enters the Indian market soon. I own 390 adventure 😅. My rynox tornado pro 4 jacket has got knox protection guards. Now I know this company is much bigger & better 😊.
They do an R version of the KTM but is somehow a £1000 more yet loses the electronic suspension but that being said the off road forks are very very good
Brilliant video👏👏👏 Exactly the comparison I want to see with some great insight into the key areas. The only question left unanswered for me is reliability which you guys cannot do in a short vid. Well done again on this video👍
Here in S.E Asia, these bikes are bought by people that can afford them and usually get pawned by those on a budget riding Super Tenere's and V-Strom's. Most riders can make do with the 650cc-800cc range.
Wow... what a videos , from the Narration , the location and presentation and details covered with these Super Adventure Machines... Brilliant . Thoroughly enjoyed watching....
Reviving 9 months on, I swapped from a 1260 pikes peak multi 6 months ago to a SD GT Gen 2, the multi had fuel range sensor issues, was all over the place, and I was filling up with every ride I did, in contrast the LC8 on the KTM holds 3 litres more, but I only fill up every other ride now, so it shows how much more economical design the LC8 is compared to either ducatis twin or fours, I'll never buy another ducati. Also not to mention how bad the suspension is on ducati's, whether it was the manual ohlins on my Pikes peak or the skyhook in comparison to the WP setup.
They put it against the 1290 S and not the 1290 R for reason. The KTM 1290 R can’t be bested by any of the current models out today. It’s a freakin beast for real.
I love my 1290 SAS. The windscreen is rubbish, though. The best and most flexible configuration so far with the least amount of noise is the low R model screen plus the MRA Xcreen spoiler. To my surprise this lowered the fuel consumption even more from 5.1L/100km down to 4.7L/100km. That's absolutely fantastic for such a big engine! And of course, the Mitas tyres are mediocre. I've ordered Dunlop Meridians for next week, can't wait.
The Ducati cost 40% more. That’s a massive difference and makes it very difficult to do a head to head comparison. The KTM is clearly very good value by comparison
Thanks for the interesting comparison! Last night I rode my 1290 sas 700km until 5 am. I wish it had more powerful lights for 150 kmh in the dark. All around excellent bike!
Fantastic review. I really want the Ducati, but I just can’t get over the drastically reduced fuel range. I spend a lot of time on desolate 2 lane highways and 200 miles between gas stops is sometimes pushing it. I’m afraid I would have to stop with 3/4 tank left to make it to the next station.
I have a 2020 KTM1290 super adventure R My 2001 Kawasaki KL are finally blew up after 318,000 miles and 19 years later I stepped up and bought the KTM and oh my God I am so happy that I did I love it powerful excellent breaking excellent cornering acceleration performance off-road in the rain doesn’t matter what you put in front of it if you got the balls to do it it’ll take you there!!!!
Great vid, amazing quality and bikes. Brought back memories of my first ride in Lake District 30 years ago with a XT 600. Sliding on the beaches we did too - no electronics then 😂👍👌
Many thanks for this review. I disqualified MTS V4S due to her fuel consumption, not suitable for a touring bike and her high price tag. I am very impatient to get my 1290 SAS 😉
Great video, great information, I really enjoyed watching it. Sold my R1250GS and since then struggling to decide KTM vs Ducati. I will go for the KTM now...
The Ducati is way too expensive for me, I tried my best to buy the KTM but my dealer (the only one in Ireland) wasn’t interested. Bought a 1250GS and while it doesn’t have the headline figures of these bikes it’s absolutely brilliant..my mates are laughing and scoffing with my pipe and slippers bike but they don’t get it 😁😂
I've owned a KTM Adventure 1290. I then bought a Superduke GT as I will never go off road and wanted out of a 19" front wheel. A capable, sporting, two-up, medium mileage a day ride is the goal. The SD GT fits those requirements maybe better than anything else--except a Pikes Peak V4 maybe? Despite being not all all unpleased with the KTM GT--I have Pikes Peak ordered. Just at age 63--lets do it. I hope someone will compare both those bikes or has somebody here ridden/owned both? Thanks!
Whilst i like the 1290, being 27, I'd rather have the GSA, i do a lot of miles a year for work so extra tank range and comfort sells it. i do have a 1290R alongside it as well.
That’s the one let down on the Ducati is the not so good fuel consumption, the best I got out of mine was 354 k/s to 20 litres. On the cruise at 110 k on hiway and taking it very easy on the throttle.other then that I love it .
These reviews just keep getting better . Slick graphics ,epic locations and skillful riding . Bravo 👏

Two epic bikes👌Hard to choose which bike I prefer, however I think the Ducati has the edge!
Awesome to be part of this, enjoyed it thoroughly🙌😎
If I were in the market fuel range and price difference would favour the KTM.
@@gerry343 Yeah compteley correct, 7k difference jeez and 50% more fuel efficient?
I just finished making this difficult decision a month ago. I went with the KTM mainly due to price and I thought that things would also be cheaper to replace if I did break something while entertaining myself with the super adventure. The way the V4S drinks fuel was also a deciding factor. I felt like all I was thinking about where do I get gas next. You always sort of have to plan ahead if you plan off road adventures with the Ducati. Both bikes are super fun to ride. If they would have been the same price I would have gone with the Ducati.
I got the V4S last year, but I don't see drinking fuel like many people say
Going through the same decision. How is the KTM?? It feels better value for money with all that tech.
The slickest review on UA-cam. Amazing.
One of the best bike reviews I've ever seen.... well done. Thanks
I'm an off-road guy who races enduro bikes. I own ADV bikes for fun when I have a chance. The more I watch videos about the 1290 ADV S the more I think the Street version of this bike is more appropriate for me than my T7 and Africa Twin!
Just test rode and ordered a 1290 SAS yesterday, let the super adventure begin 🙂
That was quite possibly the best comparison of these bikes I've seen- nice one.
Many thanks, trying our best! Aaron KNOX
Had my 1290 2 years love it I'm on my 4th Adventure amazing bikes, excellent video very informative thanks.
Great video! Very well shot and edited. Great stuff - subscribed!
Just took delivery of the KTM. Excellent review with lots of detail.
Aaron KNOX
I rode the KTM yesterday! WOW! I was blown away! The new king! Ducati! Let down by poor fuel range, that counts in the real world! and save big bucks!
KTM Super Adventure Is Looking Amazing 🔥😍😍
It is amazing, I've had mine for a month now.👍
@@tigerick7291 you're so lucky 😇😇
A great video Guys, I don’t regret swapping my GSA for the KTM SAS💪
Thanks!! Enjoy!
If I am taller (1.75+meters)
Have more money, I would pick the Ducati because of its premium attention to detail in every aspect and the engine
Another great video guys, a real treat to watch ! Looking at the smaller Multistrada V2 these days myself :)
Many thanks Dmitry, sure v2 will be brilliant option. Aaron KNOX
Thank you for directly comparing the fuel ranges. 👍
Very nicely produced!! Just bought a 23 sas & excited for spring to arrive!
Hardknott pass is an adventure on its own. Stunning visuals!
Thanks, yes it is. We had an brilliant adventure here in the Lakes! Aaron KNOX
Congrats. Very good video and a lot of information. Nice shots and editing. Lovely. And the gear is absolutely awesome too. Thanks.
Many thanks, really appreciate the kind feedback! Aaron KNOX
One of the best reviews around. 👌
Glad you think so! Aaron KNOX
What an incredible review!
I would go for the Multistrada V4 S because of the style.
Beautiful motorcycle.
Thanks a lot! V4s is absolutely brilliant! Aaron KNOX
On Michelin road 6 with better wet grip traction and electronic aid use would improve
@@jonasbaine3538 I’ve just had them installed on my ‘17 SA-S…
@@arrow0872 nice. have them on 14 1190 S
I don't see the super low mpg, as a Multi V4S owner I'm getting over 250mi and that's cruising and slightly throttle happy, the range is great, yea maybe not a GS1250 or similar but still reasonable
Same experience for me! (2022 Multi V4S)
Excellent cinematics and story telling. Good work.
outstanding review chaps 👏
Thanks John, was a lot of effort 👌 Aaron Knox
Most detailed review ever made on the top of the line adventure bikes ❤👌.If that ktm 1290 had more off road focused knobby tyres things would have been different I guess due to it's marvelous off-road capability. For the price ktm offers & low maintenance cost I am sold to that. Unfortunately here in India Ktm adventure 1290 is not available 🥲 & hope it enters the Indian market soon. I own 390 adventure 😅. My rynox tornado pro 4 jacket has got knox protection guards. Now I know this company is much bigger & better 😊.
Many thanks glad you enjoyed it! All the best from UK. Aaron Knox
They do an R version of the KTM but is somehow a £1000 more yet loses the electronic suspension but that being said the off road forks are very very good
Thanks KNOX to create high quality contents always, Heechai from 🇰🇷
Brilliant video👏👏👏
Exactly the comparison I want to see with some great insight into the key areas. The only question left unanswered for me is reliability which you guys cannot do in a short vid.
Well done again on this video👍
Ducati comes with a 4 year warranty now.
Thanks Rich, yes the reliability front, suppose you can only understand when owning the bike for a long period of time, minimum 1 year. Aaron KNOX
I will go for KTM for sure.....
Here in S.E Asia, these bikes are bought by people that can afford them and usually get pawned by those on a budget riding Super Tenere's and V-Strom's. Most riders can make do with the 650cc-800cc range.
Very good review. Thanks. Where are you filming your journey ? It's very beautifull places.
Thanks, all in Lake District in England, where Knox is located. Aaron KNOX
Love how you compared prices with the Ktm tech pack and heated grips. I don’t know anyone who buys the SAS without those.
Many thanks! Aaron KNOX
More videos like this. Well thought out review paired with stunning visuals. Great combo.
Many thanks, it was a big production and we hope to make more soon. Thanks, Aaron KNOX
Wow... what a videos , from the Narration , the location and presentation and details covered with these Super Adventure Machines... Brilliant . Thoroughly enjoyed watching....
Thanks, so glad you enjoyed! Aaron KNOX
I have the older 1290 r and I love it! It's great on and off road
Thanks for the interesting comparison! Last night I rode my 1290 sas 700km until 5 am. I wish it had more powerful lights for 150 kmh in the dark. All around excellent bike!
would've loved to see how the new 2022 tiger rally pro compares with these two.
Thank God I will buy one of each of them
Fantastic work, really enjoyed! Well done!
I have a 2020 KTM1290 super adventure R
My 2001 Kawasaki KL are finally blew up after 318,000 miles and 19 years later I stepped up and bought the KTM and oh my God I am so happy that I did I love it powerful excellent breaking excellent cornering acceleration performance off-road in the rain doesn’t matter what you put in front of it if you got the balls to do it it’ll take you there!!!!
Fantastic cinematography ❤
Thanks a lot 😊
Wouldn’t a Ktm 1290 Super duke GT be a closer comparison to the Ducati?
Guess its not strictly an adventure bike... Thanks, Aaron KNOX
Great vid, amazing quality and bikes. Brought back memories of my first ride in Lake District 30 years ago with a XT 600. Sliding on the beaches we did too - no electronics then 😂👍👌
Thats really cool! Glad you enjoyed it! Aaron KNOX
Great review! Compliments from Italy, Etna volcano. Beautiful places and professional approach. Bravissimo
Many thanks Luca, we're trying our best! Aaron KNOX
BMW fans probably hate this video, they are like wait my GS is not Super?😂
Many thanks for this review.
I disqualified MTS V4S due to her fuel consumption, not suitable for a touring bike and her high price tag.
I am very impatient to get my 1290 SAS 😉
What is The difference between S R?
That’s a great review, and man, do I want that Duke!
Thanks for acceleration tests. KTM seems like better value and raw fun plus fuel range.
Wow. Super nice. Thanks and give us more!
Thank you! Will do!
Top notch review of two superb bikes. Well done guys. That road looked sketchy. Proper knobbies probably could have handled it no problem.
Great comparison! Thank you.
Great video, great information, I really enjoyed watching it. Sold my R1250GS and since then struggling to decide KTM vs Ducati. I will go for the KTM now...
Many thanks glad you enjoyed! Aaron Knox
very nice presentation and great quality video....congratulations!!!!!!!!!
Thank you very much!
I have a 2017 1290, and I seem to get between 47 and 52mpg regardless of how I ride. Amazing really.
That is amazing for such a poweful motor! Aaron KNOX
The Ducati is way too expensive for me, I tried my best to buy the KTM but my dealer (the only one in Ireland) wasn’t interested. Bought a 1250GS and while it doesn’t have the headline figures of these bikes it’s absolutely brilliant..my mates are laughing and scoffing with my pipe and slippers bike but they don’t get it 😁😂
Same. I think they would rather sell the lawn mowers.
Great comparative review!
Glad you enjoyed it
Please Ducati v2 review 🙏🙏🙏
Great production all around - well done!
Many thanks Gerety! Trying!! Aaron KNOX
What a great video!
Thanks
Fuel range is a big negative. I will take the GSA just for size of the gas tank- personal preference but I hate stopping for gas!
Great review, thanks guys!
Glad you think so! Many thanks Aaron Knox
Great bikes and excellent vid….. are there no trees there?
I've owned a KTM Adventure 1290. I then bought a Superduke GT as I will never go off road and wanted out of a 19" front wheel. A capable, sporting, two-up, medium mileage a day ride is the goal. The SD GT fits those requirements maybe better than anything else--except a Pikes Peak V4 maybe? Despite being not all all unpleased with the KTM GT--I have Pikes Peak ordered. Just at age 63--lets do it. I hope someone will compare both those bikes or has somebody here ridden/owned both? Thanks!
Superduke GT looks amazing to be fair, enjoy yours! Aaron KNOX
Whilst i like the 1290, being 27, I'd rather have the GSA, i do a lot of miles a year for work so extra tank range and comfort sells it. i do have a 1290R alongside it as well.
So sad, my 1290 SAS 2022 was stolen tonight 😪. Really loved the bike.
Thats sad! :(
21:9 ❤ Big Thank You
😉
That’s the one let down on the Ducati is the not so good fuel consumption, the best I got out of mine was 354 k/s to 20 litres. On the cruise at 110 k on hiway and taking it very easy on the throttle.other then that I love it .
