I recently bought a 2021 s model and put some Mitaz enduro trail xt+ tyres on which were superb, as was the bike, off road at the UK ABR festival but are poor on road. What tyres have you used on yours which have been a reasonable compromise? Cheers
@@teamgas the closest to the Trail XT+ tire were the Mitas E-09 which I had on the 1290 SAR - I used them in the enduro park and near where I live - i still have them as they are not fully worn but they are not mounted at the moment . For touring I tend to go with 50:50 tires for the longevity- here I am looking for at least 5000 km or more - I have had the Mitas E-07+ multiple times, the metzler Karoo 4 and the Heidenau K60 Ranger and just now the relatively new Dunlop Trailmax Raid - the last 2 are my favorites for now. The Dunlop is excellent (the best of the 4) on the pavement even in wet conditions and still provides 50/50 performance on gravel while still giving good longevity of at least 6000 km (depending on how hard you are on the throttle) - the Heidenau offers larger block pattern for slightly better off-road performance over the Dunlop - however my rear tire did not survive a 500 km autobahn ride despite staying below the max speed rating of 160 kph- the Dunlop is rated for 190 kph. Despite that I would still consider the Heidenau for future rides as it is an overall good tire choice- I hope this helps
@@MotoVibes great thanks for that! You have confirmed my thinking. I will try some Trailmax raids and keep the Mitaz for when I know I am going somewhere with mud and tough conditions! I had Heidenau K60 scout on a previous bike and wet road grip was pretty bad on our UK roads. Thanks

All the large adv bikes are excellent touring/ long distance bikes. They will blow any mid size adv bike out of the water for long distance touring at higher speeds. Primarily they offer the best wind protection and typically better suspension
The quick answer is the S. The broken down answer and the real differences between the S and the R are explained in this video ua-cam.com/video/TYFYFEbIkZE/v-deo.html 😉
I have the same model. Fantastic bike love it. Just had warped front rotors and pads replaced under warranty at 10000km. Problem occurred approximately 4000km Brembo brakes so don’t know why. Rode my 1250 pretty hard with Brembo with no issues. Also had coolant leak. Topped up twice so far. Been checked apparently no issues?? Only other issue is bike falls over sometimes. 😢
Thanks for sharing your experience- the warped rotors are an issue than some had on the predecessors too. Coolant should not leak - maybe check the seal around the water pump - Stephan had this issue on his rental bikes - an easy fix with a new seal and something KTM should do under warranty. As for the falling over part - practice and off-road trainings help to minimize those - my current bike sees a lot less ground time than my first 1290 SAS that had to endure my learning curve 😂
Usually a problem like yours is not the callipers but sub standard rotors that are stock from the factory. Every year after a new model is launched, engineers collaborate with finance specialists to cut 15% on the cost of build. Motorcycle manufacturers follow this pattern of doing business after the world wide major automotive corporations. Therefore after 3 yrs in production, the 4th year of that model costs roughly 48% of the original cost to build. The most expensive factor of any new model of any vehicle is engineering. They do this in order to offset those initial high costs to increase profit margins. Unfortunately, time and time again, as a retired mechanic, I’ve seen junk rotors, pads and cheap tires, along with mediocre bearings, seals and races. All these things will not necessarily make you crash, but they will wear out quicker. My advice? Go aftermarket it’s worth the price for longevity. Subscribe to a forum or club of your model of motorcycle and see what your peers are saying. In the meantime check these things for you particular situation. When your rotors warp, they can affect your brake pads to wear out faster, your callipers to chatter therefore wearing out the bushing/bearing/ or housing, and the bearing in the hub of your wheel. Check those items, but for the most part just get good rotors and brake pads and the callipers and wheel hub should last the lifetime of the motorcycle until a major rebuild of engine transmission under normal use for the type of motorcycle. I personally use ceramic brake pads and aftermarket premium rotors that have a higher nickel content for hardness. 4000 kms of use on rotors/pads tells me they are junk from the factory. 😮😢
@@janisblack2183 thank you. All that makes sense. Got it done under warranty so that’s a start. If problem persists I will go after market for sure. In fact if it keeps happening then it’s not fit for purpose under Australian law so they can keep replacing them for ever😂
@@christopher54179 the KTM 1290 Super Adventure R is a great bike, especially for the guys who are taller and more experienced in off road adventure. I like the fact that it’s more raw power and no nonsense when compared to other ADV bikes. The price is right too. All machines have their irks and quirks, if you ride them you’re going to have to replace those irks every so often. The key issue is the fact that if that make and model fits you, and you love it, then keep it because it’s worth it. 👍😃

I have not ridden the R1300 GS yet but I hope I will have the chance soon. I know the BMW community has a split opinion on this latest iteration of the bike. I don’t have a full opinion until I get to ride it. Also - the new „adventure“ will be announced on Friday at the BMW Days in Garmisch. I saw a first sneak photo yesterday and I am curious how this bike will be received
@@1compaqedr8 I was there was the presentation on Friday and saw the bike in real life. It looks better than in the photos but I see why the GS community does not seem to like the latest iteration of the GS adventure. It’s a bold change from the predecessor for BMWs cash cow. Time (and sales) will tell how well it will be received after all
@@bradleyalexander5821 btw - I have now ridden the R 1300 GS - just a short 30 test ride. It’s a completely new bike also in how it rides. There is lots to like - the handling is excellent and the engine delivers plenty of linear power from low rpm’s - a noticeable step up from the predecessor. The steering and handling is very nibble. The breaks are great - plenty of feel and stopping power. It looks and feels like a much smaller bike as compared to the old GS but with better handling and more power. Unfortunately The quick shifter is still pretty bad especially as compared to my KTM. Overall it’s a great motorcycle - the design still seems to split the GS community
Hi pal , you may be able to put my mind at ease , I have owned a 2020 Africa Twin DCT Adventure sport which I traded in for a 2022 BMW GS1250 ADVENTURE TE , I have just traded my GS in for a 2024 KTM 1290 Adventure R and I'm having buyers remorse ?? 😢 I didn't test ride it as they only had the Adventure S in the showroom but I liked the rugged looks of the R version, I don't know if you've ridden a GS1250 and I'm wondering what to expect in the difference??and how many of these things break down ?? He said KTM have addressed the issues ?? And they are as good as any other Adventure bike ?? But he's gonna say that isn't he ! You have serious experience with these bikes , have I done the right thing ?? He offered me £2000 better PX than Honda and £1500 better PX than BMW. The hike in price was just too much for the GS 1300 and I couldn't justify just upgrading to a newer year 1250 , it would be like riding home on my own bike but £4000 lighter 😮😮 lol
@@gatti493 don’t get too influenced by all the social media chatter. Topics tend to get blown out of proportion. There are issues with most bikes and they are relatively rare compared to all the bikes that run just fine. Take the 1300 GS for example- the list of initial problems is long - it’s still a fantastic motorcycle 😉 difference is that BMW tends to better and more responsive service than KTM With that said I would by the 1299 SAR again in a heat beat. I am Iceland at the moment riding some of the best off-road tracks in the world and I went through water crossings with water levels just below the air intake- bike still runs great 😉 In short - be excited about your new bike and focus on the great adventures you will with it not the issues that you could have - cheers Oliver

I was wondering. I have a 2023 Ktm 1290 sar with 570 miles. When I fill it with gas it seems to take a few seconds for the fuel to trickle down so I can’t hold the nozzle filling as it doesn’t go down as fast as it pumps in. Is that something you have experienced or do you think I could have something blocked?
Every time I fuel up 😉 it’s normal as the fuel level rises I have to pull the nozzle up a bit and slow down the flow to allow the time for both tank halfs to fill up
Amazing work you are doing!!! 🙌🏻👍🏻 Where are you in Bavaria I’m Ingolstad area new here let’s catch up and ride together sometime…? Stay safe and have fun 🤩 Best Peter
The thing with this bike that i see is…if you put good off-road tires on it its limited what it can do on the street. And with all that power it seems a bit pointless.
@@demo3003 the good thing that it is easy to change tires and mount the best tire depending on the kind of tour you do. It was repaired and now i am waiting for the new electrical instalation. Please let me know how I can contact you in private to talk more about the 1290 SAR. I would like to discuss more about this beast.
@@ByeAbusa thanks for your message- i replied to your insta message 😉
What do you think about the new 1300 GS? Personally I’m thrilled with my 1250 GS, especially after testing the 1300.
@@MotoVibes people seem to hate the gs adventure looks
@@MotoVibes ….. Thanks for your input.
Anything relating the engine character between this and last iteration?
Good question
Not really. Character is the same but with a little less grunt. With an aftermarket exhaust it gets really close to the predecessor
I didn't test ride it as they only had the Adventure S in the showroom but I liked the rugged looks of the R version,
I don't know if you've ridden a GS1250 and I'm wondering what to expect in the difference??and how many of these things break down ??
Take the 1300 GS for example- the list of initial problems is long - it’s still a fantastic motorcycle 😉 difference is that BMW tends to better and more responsive service than KTM
With that said I would by the 1299 SAR again in a heat beat. I am Iceland at the moment riding some of the best off-road tracks in the world and I went through water crossings with water levels just below the air intake- bike still runs great 😉
In short - be excited about your new bike and focus on the great adventures you will with it not the issues that you could have - cheers Oliver
@@MotoVibes
Thank you very much Oliver, I have since found out that it may have a 4 year warranty also , so there's a bit of piece of mind in that , thanks again pal
Every time I fuel up 😉 it’s normal as the fuel level rises I have to pull the nozzle up a bit and slow down the flow to allow the time for both tank halfs to fill up
@@MotoVibes thanks a lot man!
Amazing work you are doing!!! 🙌🏻👍🏻
Where are you in Bavaria
I’m Ingolstad area new here let’s catch up and ride together sometime…?
Stay safe and have fun 🤩
Best
Peter
Peter - thank you very much btw I am from Berlin 😉
The thing with this bike that i see is…if you put good off-road tires on it its limited what it can do on the street. And with all that power it seems a bit pointless.
@@demo3003 the good thing that it is easy to change tires and mount the best tire depending on the kind of tour you do. For trips on the pavement I choose street tires, for on and off-road tours 50/50 tires and in the enduro park 80/20 off-road tires 😉also I still have second set of smaller wheels mounted with 100 road tires
Where’s your covering from?
Check out this video- first topic after the intro ua-cam.com/video/QWCnTq1H-2A/v-deo.htmlsi=9xDahQYt0khsKUyY - check description as well 😉
If only the engine was reliable
@@TheFbiFilesRepeat yeah. That is not something I would be too worried about despite my engine failure- the big majority of 1290 have no engine problems at all 😉
they change model too fast😢
The next successor is rumored for 2024 with the 1390 Super Adventure - this may be more an engine upgrade and rework of the body design
yep. kills resale value when you want to upgrade to new model since your slightly new bike is now 'old'.
@@1compaqedr8 yeah. But you can get good deals on brand new bikes if you buy the predecessor once the new bike is in the show rooms. That why I bought the 2020 1290 SAR when the 2021 was just announced and upgraded in 2022 to the current model
I’ve been trying to decide if I should buy a leftover 2023 or wait for the 2025 bikes.
