  • Having camped in the 3ful Lanshan 2 tent for a dozen ore more nights, I have slowly modified my tent with a few hacks that make the Lanshan 2 much better, easier to pitch, more stable, more waterproof, more windproof, well in my humble opinion - short video with detailed description of 3 of my favourite mods and hacks.

    For some reason I have a Lanshan 2 and I find myself using my MSR Hubba more for solo kayaking and cycling. It revolves around the changing availability of pegging opportunities and the merits of a freestanding vs non-freestandiing tent if pegging is inadequate, and correlated ease of setup. I use rocks, plants and logs as tyout methods which substitute for pegging ops. Using these with non-freestanding is an interesting puzzle I seen to not prefer to regularly make either.

    Hello Davey, thanks for a brill video, very useful.

    Brilliant video. On looking fir my first serious tent after a year of roughing it I had become fed up with all the half baked reviews and 10 ten this and that videos so to finally find not just a genuine user but someone who has used his head on overcoming the glitches I am sold. Love the idea of the walking poles and how you use them as I don’t use trekking poles myself but I always carry them strapped to my Bergen as part of my ‘what if I get hurt and need to get myself off the hill/mountain’ aid equipment and have used them at times just with my tarp. So love this option too. 👍 keep them coming 👍 love a thinker so have SUBSCRIBED also 👍👍

    Thanks for this very useful video. I've got the bunny ears ready, seam sealer (reinforce - I know it's not really required on the L2) and other tightening rings I took off my old MSR (I'll use for the inner but again not required). Swapped the old MSR bag for the 3FUL bag because it's a hassle scrunching the tent back in again. 6 mini-clips & bungee cord for the tent midpoint lower edges to stop them flapping about (or you could stitch loops on instead) as I've seen mentioned in a few vlogs. Also paracord (to hang stow bags or a tent torch on) for the ridgeline.

    Hey Davey, thanks for these. It's nice to hear you like this tent so much, since I have it too. It's a great tent!
    May I ask though what is the point though of pitching one angle higher than the other? Does that really help? With what?
    And do the extra guide-ropes make it more sturdy? Or do you just do that so you can hang it up if you need?
    I got one more hack for you:
    I'm going to try to pull a 2m x 2m tarp over it. Then secure it to 4 existing corners. It will rest on the two poles at the top.
    My logic is: this will block out most of the sun, and also hard rain splashes won't come through. And I still have a tarp that I can hang. Keeps the tent good for longer too.
    I got one in a camouflage pattern, for extra stealth camping. Maybe also an idea for you.👍🏻

    • @Daveyboygoeswild
      @Daveyboygoeswild  3 роки тому +1

      Hi, okay first the on ring with the loop of guy line between the 2 guy points, spreads the load between both of them so takes the strain away from the single point.
      The angle I am not sure what you mean, both poles are the same length. If it's super windy I may lower one end which brings the doors much closer to the ground.
      I have had the tent out in big rain and as long as it's pitched, I have been totally dry. I see the tarp a bit over the top unless your in torrential rain for hours

    I do like a bloke who uses the thing between his ears! Top marks for separating the apex guy from the door zipper end pegging points! I see you have also separated the side panel pull-outs from the skirt pegging points - I'm sure Lanshan double up on the zipper and side pull-out guys so they can say it pitches with only 6 pegs (and lowering it somewhat - UK conditions usually call for draught exclusion rather than lofty, airy arrangements!). The side/end panel pull-outs give volume and separation and more wind resistance, obvious to the experienced backpacker and mind ie. getting old in my case! Any tent is only as strong as its materials and design, PLUS the total number of pegging points! So your way uses ? 12 total? That's my belt and braces way of thinking too. Good on you for not being one of those blokes who just goes with the way the tent makers and most other people use the thing, as supplied. Likewise the inner ridge separation mod. It's all about the geometry, and your grey matter, and putting it into action (-;)~

    Davey, I've been thinking of buying just the inner tent for $59 USD, the 3 season one with more of the mesh, and also buying a bigger tarp instead of the outer shell. For the difference in price I figure I could get a nice tarp giving more setup possibilities for rain snow or wind protection and also for more open air flow when it's hot and humid...still with bug protection. do you see any advantage in the outer tent shell vs a larger lightweight tarp?

    • @Daveyboygoeswild
      @Daveyboygoeswild  3 роки тому +1

      That's a great question, for non woodland locations in windy conditions yes I think the whole tent is better. But for wooded areas I could see the benefits of what your saying. I like to hammock so rater do that than ground sleep in the inner. It would work. Dave Outdoors (his channel name) uses his mesh inner year round and manages to keep warm enough.

      not really, however the inner is 99% mesh apart from the floor, so not worried about it, Just set it up and the inner dries out in minutes, then just wipe the floor with a microfibre towel.

      Thanks, basically you tie a loop of any description around the Ridge line near where it attaches to the area ithe pole sits. Then pull it down slightly and tie it around the handle of the walking pole. It pulls it down by about 3/4 if an inch.

    Have you done anything with the shock cord on the bathtub corners? I'm trying to figure out a way to maybe attach them to something on the fly adjustment straps so I don't need to pull them out to the stakes.

    • @Daveyboygoeswild
      @Daveyboygoeswild  3 роки тому +1

      Hi, no, I just pull them out to the steaks, you could use 4 extra pegs right next. To the edge of the bath tub corner, but only put it in the ground about 1/4 way, then use that to lift the cord before going out to the normal peg, so it's just a riser if that makes sense.

      @@Daveyboygoeswild Thanks for the reply! I'm in the process of working on the mods you outline in the video. I decided to buy some LiteOutdoor Dyneema (DCF) line to replace the cordage that came with the tent. And that kit comes with adjusters that will be a lot easier to use especially with gloves on. And I'm really really keen to get the vestibule doors hack done. I cannot stand fiddling with the goat-head clips in the middle of the night when I have to pee and I have gloves on. They are impossible to use. Thanks for the great video and ideas.

      Tha ks but I do and always walk with poles, so for me there is no need to include the weight or cost. Following your logic, should I also add the cost and weight to my poles to tents that also have poles? I just don't agree with your logic.
