The whole reason for T-tops was actually because of safety regulations. Convertibles were expected to be unable to pass new safety requirements for rollover protection, so the T-top was created to allow for a somewhat open-air experience while still keeping a protective structure over the cabin. Went away because later convertibles had strong enough windshield frames to provide necessary protection, and some have even gone with retractable roll bars that deploy if the computer detects the car is rolling over.
i always thought it was the other way round, i thought t tops still counted as a regular car not a convertable and therefore had to meet regular car standards with half a roof

Francisco Juan well also more of the younger audiences want to buy them too whilst being apart of that small group therefore making them even more money off of insurance as well..
Francisco Juan nono, I'm not talking about sports cars, I'm talking about sporty cars, kinda like the Corolla XRS or the Celica. cars that weren't true sports cars, but cars that you could have fun in. An upgraded Corolla would be fun, or as I was thinking, an upgraded, sporty Yaris (I'm a rally kinda guy, I just want an AWD Yaris). I know about supply and demand, but I believe that if car manufacturers made more sporty cars, they would sell pretty well
Supply and demand, Logically if less people are buying them then makers can't make money from them. Everyone is getting small economical vehicles now. :(
I blame Ralph Nader, neither Volvo nor Saab forced anyone to make car safer, they did it because they thought is was important. But Ralph on the other hand, didn't understand cars in the first place and only published the book to create commotion...
Yes, damn those guys for pioneering the 3 point seat belt, and lets not forget that those monsters released the technology for FREE to the rest of the industry even though they could have patented the tech for monetary gain. Damn them all to hell! /s
Ryan Tyniec you know they did a lot more to the modern car then most some are side air bags o2 censors whiplash protection pedestrian detection auto braking blind spot monitoring all shit that makes bad drivers even less attentive to the road and adding weight and complication to something most car enthusiast could care less about. I’m glad my car has safety but it’s just out of control now
CAD is for design. The analysis bit is via CAE: Computer Aided Engineering. The CAD only holds data of lines and surfaces, but CAE models the car into a big mathematical equation solved by the computer... Hence the analysis bit.
You got it backwards, airbags are an active system because the respond (activate) during an impact. Seatbelts are passive (except the pretensioner) because they do not respond during the impact.
Wait wait! Red pen here! lol "Active safety equipment" by definition is everything that PREVENTS YOU from crashing. "Passive safety equipment" is everything that, when a crash happens, mitigates damage and injury. So seatbelts and airbags are both passive safety systems. ESP, ASR, ABS etc are active safety features
I wish you would have mentioned more about the Volvo 240 to this day nobody has ever died in a head-on collision in a Volvo 240. That was the car that helped introduce crumple zones for the first time widespread in America bought that design in started making it the regulation.
Hey Donut! Really interesting video! Love how you guys cover multiple aspects of car history, industry, science, trends, reviews, practical vs dream cars! Keep it awesome work! How about an a little instruction video on how to set-up the best seat position for safety and performance in your car? I see so many people driving sitting too low, too far back, reclined, feet on the dash (passengers), and sitting too close to steering wheel. Even hand position can reduce injuries in a crash. I think it could be a cool video, wish I could do it on my own but you guys can get the message out way better! Always wear you seatbelts, fo sho!
Well, A part of what your asking is mentioned in the: "how cars went from boxy to curvy" video. It is a combination of depression, safety and styling. For example: If car manufacturers have to build cars like they did 40 years ago, they would go bankrupt. Robots, technologie, laws, styling and producing less greenhouse gas are the keywords in the car industry.
Back then, saftey wasnt number 1 so company's focuses more on looks rather than saftey. When the seventies hit, brands couldnt really find a way to make cars look good and also be safe, so they just decided to makes cars only safe and didnt care much about looks
Sure, i like cars. However, the real reason I watch Donut's videos one after the other is your, James' and the rest of the guys jokes and personalities. The writing is also top notch, and the guys at editing are awesome. In essence, all you guys rock. Keep up the good work!
My father worked in the automotive industry in the 80s and 90s. He tells me of how they wore hard hats when working on the airbags, just in case they went off, as they did not know if this was a possibility. Being a firefighter, he had watched two guys get launched out the sides of a car while trying to crush the center console, where the module is.
This is awesome. I actually watched this video as part of a Law Enforcement training for Vehicle Safety. Awesome to see your guys video as a training aid. Very fun to watch vs the old boring monotone voiced videos haha.
You got active and passive safety wrong. Passive safety help minimize damage during an accident therefore airbags and seat belts are both active safety features. Active safety helps preventing an accident, i.e. traction control.
great vid! *should do a history of volvo's safety video* ! I've heard they will share their technology for free just to improve overall safety for *us*
Seat belts saved me one night in a 1970 Buick Electra. Thankfully I was in the habit of wearing both the lap and separate shoulder belts as a teenage driver in the mid 70s. I was one of the few people who buckled up back then.
Justin Noker Steel isn't always better though. I suppose at lower speeds your car and you could walk away with you taking more impact than a car without a steel bumper. But at speed i'd much rather the car take it for me.
Nader pretty much lied about the Corvair's terrible safety - and his statements were later proven false by the National Highway Traffic Safety Association who released a 134 page report that exonerated the Corvair of Nader's charges. The NHTSA would go on to say that "The 1960-63 Corvair compares favorably with contemporary vehicles used in the tests," and would later hire three outside testers that would come to the same conclusion.
