Ethiopia only won the war because the soviet union betrayed Somalia and teamed with Ethiopia likely due to religious ties. It's actually a very interesting piece of history and historically Somali has been in and out of Ethiopia many times.
It had nothing to do with religion and everything to do with Ethiopia being a more useful alley in that region of Africa. The Soviets were literally anti-religious and Somalia couldn’t get their act together, so it made sense for Russia to side with Ethiopia in the end.
