I really like the upgraded Micarta scales and the BK18 (with new sheath ) seems to be the best value. Love the blade shape too.

I stripped my BK16’s powder coat because I couldn’t get sparks from my fero rod. I blued it with a gun blueing kit and it’s awesome. I live in the PNW and have had only minor surface discoloration and I almost never coat the blade with oil. Great knife.

Dye the 16 sheath green. It's a great sheath to mount on a vest. Order AZWelke kydex sheath for belt carry. Strip coating on blade and soak in apple cider vinegar. Dip micarta scales in teak oil.

That coating is nothing new, it used to be on all Beckers before switching to the traction coating. Ka-Bar uses the smooth coating on just about their entire lineup and has been for years.
Kydex isn't permanent, if you get new scales that don't quite fit its as easy as heating it up with a heat gun, torch, hair dryer, oven, lighter, etc and adjusting it fit to your new scales. Just like leather can be wet fit to accommodate.

The two companies that drive me nuts most.
    Becker and Tops .
Both refuse to listen to their customers and stop making those crappy nylon sheaths. Also BOTH refuse to listen to customers about BK"s crappy zytel scales and Tops absurdly thin scales.
Both companies will make one knife with an amazing sheath or with a perfect scale size and then make 10 without????
It blows my mind how they flip us the bird every year .
Just make your knives with micarta scales BECKER and stop using those crappy sheaths !
    K rant over..🤣🤪

Your absolutely right , Especially about Becker /Kabar! I think they feel that changing/upgrading will "hurt" their core following. Just look what ESEE has done with the inclusion of S35VN and 3D contoured scales, They have something for everyone.
BTW, The 25th anniversary version of the TEX Creek has a good sheath and Fat scales. It's one of the favorite blades for my XL-XXL sized hands . Maybe the crew has small hands at TOPS! Thanks for watching

@@knifevideochannel4657 That Tex Creek was amazing wish I had scored one . I would love to see them make their scales like that more often . Also if Tops would make thicker scales on the side and I'd buy them yesterday ...My Brakimo NEEDS an upgrade . I've been thinking about adding my own scales but then the kydex sheath wouldn't work. My daughter lives a couple miles from the Tops idaho factory ...I might go see if they can add liners for me when I visit her next month.

@@Airik1111bibles I called TOPS a couple years ago to inquire about changing scales on a BOB Bushcraft knife. They said $20 bucks for change and the flared Lanyard tube is the main issue. the reason makes sense... aftermarket products. they can charge less for the knife and you can pick and choose your own custom scales and sheath from wherever you want. why would you pay more for a better sheath and scales, then pay more again for some different scales or sheath you find somewhere else and end up liking more? id prefer to choose my own scales and sheath from a slew of different choices and sources than get whatever the one is that the manufacturer decides that everyone will have. you can make yours different than anyone elses. duh...

Yes, Stripping the coating of any Becker, Ontario, Or ESEE Knife would definitely make it more food prep friendly. The Traction coating on the BK18 "comes" off in use too. Thanks for watching
