BERGARA B14R REVIEW

- We are taking a close look at the Bergara B14R, a precision bolt action .22lr.
Bergara has become a standard in the precision .22lr sports so I wanted to take a look at what this rifle has to offer. We talk the pro's and cons of this rifle, its price point relative to the market, and look at accuracy at 50 yards and 182 yards.
This Bergara B14R was provided to me by a friend. The rifle is sporting an Athlon Ares ETR optic.
We see if the slogan lives up to it's name; shoot one, own one.
Thank you Josh for honestly testing all these rifles. Great info for anyone in the market for a precision 22. Good to see the back of your hand healing up.
Thanks Terry. Appreciate that, smashed it pretty good a week or so ago. Glad it didnt break it haha
Appreciate the great review. Very helpful content for shopping. Already a Bergara fan and I think this going to make a great practice gun.
Thanks for the review Josh. That is one I am considering as I go further down the 22 rabbit hole.
Nice sixrutters
Josh, Love your videos. Thank you for them. I have the Bergara B14R Carbon and the CZ MTR Varmint. Both very good rifles. I thought the B14R is also direct feed. Pretty sure it is.
I have that rifle. Changed a couple of things with mine. $150 Shilen Competition trigger, reduced action screw torque to 45 in/lbs and added a muzzle brake just for some barrel weight. Rifle now shoots in the .2s at 50 yards with different flavors of SK.
What a great video. I could tell you were really enjoying yourself . The B14 is a hammer for sure . Thanks for the post and keep bringing those 🔥videos.
Lmao yeah i honestly didnt have high expectations but sure was surprised and having a blast
New one's were slow coming in so I bought a carbon barrel B14r with action and put it in a Candex Strike Tundra stock.
I'm very very happy with what i have.
Oh and I put a compensator on the end with a Vortex Crossfire 6-18x44 scope and it shoots just great.
Get em while they're there !
I've just ordered a Bergara B14-R pretty much on the strength of you video and comparing them to others at this price point here in the UK. My other consideration was the CZ LRP but i like the stock of the Bergara a little better, the cheek riser looks more solid.
Anyhow, i'm sure the CZ is a brilliant rifle also. The B14-R is £999 over here (Typical UK inflated prices) and there is an 8 week turn around (For whatever reason) but hey ho, can't wait to get it to the range.
Thanks for the very informative presentation.
Top man.
Thanks brother
Controlled feed. Cz. Never had a single fees issue with my varmint standard. Bolt is like butter. Best groups with gemtech. 42 gr. 1020. And norma tac 1100.
Come on , Even lowly Ruger 10/22 is controlled feed, Ruger precision rimfire , Ruger American
And many many other rimfire rifle
Great video! I have my XLR Chassis ordered. Now waiting on the left handed version barreled action steel to start showing up!
Yeah a lot of people waiting for the wrong hand version🤣
I threw mine into a KRG bravo chassis and it’s awesome. It’s so much fun to shoot. For the money, it’s hard to argue the B14r is a great trainer rifle.
Yeah they are a great trainer rifle for sure.
Thanks for the video. Been thinking about buying a new 22lr, leaning towards the B14.
Glad I saw this video. Been undecided if this or CZ457. Looks like I will be ordering the B14R.
Great video. Thanks!
Glad you found it useful! Cant go wrong with either rifle
I'm a new subscriber and this is my first comment. Love the videos. Please keep making these awesome long range rimfire videos! Great quality, producing and presenting! I'm in the market for a precision 22LR rifle and I'm leaning between this rifle and a CZ 457 MTR. Take care from the United Kingdom.
Thanks a lot. No worries I will be creating rimfirr content as long as I can
Didn't want to spend the money on the Vudoo. So I bought the Steel bergara action. Then dropped it into an MDT XL LSS chassis. Looks like a Vudoo to me now. Lol and the accuracy is right on par with it anyways.
Totally agree. I have the same rifle and I love it. Mine is not as picky on ammo as my 457MTR and shot the best 50yd group of my life, of .117 with the Bergara and sk semi auto. Best $900 plus I’ve spent in shooting fun. Keep the great content coming.
Thats an amazing group! Thanks for commenting
Wow, I have the same piece coming my way should be here in a week.
Great shooting love your site and I’m subscribed..
Well done video and I thank you for your time and effort.
I have two precision 22lr rifles
A T1X and a CZ 454
I have over 1k rounds through the T1X and about 300 through the CZ of everything from CCI SV, Wolf ME, RWS R50, Eley Match, RWS rifle match, SK Match Rifle, Tac-22 to name but a few
And I would NEVER even THINK of shooting any ammo for an accuracy evaluation or in a match without first firing at a minimum 20 shots to lay down that rounds lubricating wax to season the barrel to that particular ammo and do a basic barrel cleaning between ammo types
Without exception with every ammo I have ever shot the poi changes from the first to the 5th or 6th and by 10th my rifles poi with that ammo is established and its different for every ammo I have ever shot out of both rifles
Some ammo settles in with the first 8-10 shots others it took 15-18 shots to settle in and give me bug hole groups
But in my experience based on a years worth of atrending 22lr BR matches you simply will not get your best accuracy especially from high end match grade 22lr ammo until you've put enough rounds down the tube to let that ammo settle into how your rifle shoots it. This has been what I observed with all 22lr precision rifles Ive seen shoot in competition from sub $1k CZ's to $3k+ Vodoo's.
So impressed am I with the B14r I'm selling my CZ to fund buying the B14r.
I had the 14R carbon version for about a year. Had it mated with an Athlon MIDAS BTR GEN2 HD 4.5-27×50 scope and the trigger adjusted all the down. It was extremely accurate at 50 yards, sub .5 MOA any day. There were only two things that bothered me. First was the action. It was really rough which is typical of the rifle. Second, it only fed certain ammo reliably. SK Standard Plus and Eley Club fed and performed the best. I eventually sold it because shooting it wasn't much of a challenge.
Welp, I will eat my words man. I pulled the trigger on a Bergara b14r in steel barrel, and it out shoots my CZ 457 LRP....... It is far less ammo picky, groups better and is way more consistent @ both 50 and 100yd not took it past 100 yet. I got the HMR full b14r rifle in steel barrel topped it off with a area 419 improved base with a strike eagle 5-25 siting in Vortex PMR rings and an Atlas CAL QD Bipod. Man i just simply love it. One thing is for sure though my CZ wont be going anywhere though because I am just too attached to it. Probably going to give it to my niece if she continues to show interest in shooting.
Nice man. Yeah got to go with whatever gives you the most confidence.
Thank you Josh to share this information, I am planning to purchase a new 22 LR the one that I like the most is the CZ 457 but the last model price is over $1.600, after this video I am thinking to purchase the Bergara, thanks again
The bergaras are great rifles
Just found your channel a couple weeks ago, and I'm hooked on your videos - especially your gun reviews and head-to-head comparisons. If you can manage to find one, I would love to see a review of the new Bergara BMR (or a head-to-head between the BMR and the 457 MTR).
I will get one on the channel at some point im sure. Im almost 100% any good bolt gun would obliterate the bmr. The semi autos just cant match a good bolt guns consistency
@@jeffkingsley8964 oh nice i will have to get one and test it
Great review. Thank you. I may buy based on this video since I am not a tinker guy...😊
I also put a rear bag rider and 3" forend plate for the benchrest
How many points in a bench rest 50 in your cards ? I have a cz mtr for br 50 and shoots well , i shoot at 8 months .greats
@@albertoguerreiro7439 ara has 2500 points
I’ve got both the b14r and the Vudoo. Accuracy no different with the right ammo but have had much better feeding experience with the Vudoo. I was running the b14r barreled action in a chassis and would agree that the Bergara stock seems to behave better from other people that I’ve seen. Probably the bottom metal and mag catch are just right for the mags. Feed lips do wear quickly on the Bergara mags as well.
Awesome i appreciate the input
First off, I'd like to thank you for all of the hard work that you put in.
I should be getting on of these in a week or so. I'd like to know what recommendation(s) you have for cleaning procedures: Initial, between different ammunition, etc.
Being new to precision 22LR I felt that you'd be a good person to ask. Please let me know if you already have a place for FAQs or would rather field these types of questions through another medium.
Thanks,
Keith
Thanks Keith.
Cleaning: wet patches, nylon brush, dry patches. Dont pull the patch jig back past the crown; remove it then pull rod back through barrel.
Light cleaning when new. Then i only clean if i change ammos with different lubes; eley to sk etc.
If its same lube like sk and lapua no need to clean.
If your not changing ammo then no need to clean unless you see accuracy fall off
Nice review. And a lovely home range you have there. Making me jealous.🙂
Thanks 45
I’ve had mine for a while in a MDT ACC chassis and it hammers! It feels just like my Savage Elite Precision 6.5CM! I upgraded to the TriggerTech trigger as well, set at 8oz.
Nice. They are excellent rifles
Great shooting with a great rifle.
Thanks
I hope you keep making these videos, I really enjoy them. Lets see you hit 50k subscribers
Awesome, glad you like them. I will keep making them, not sure about getting to 50k subs though haha
I have the Bergara b14 r carbon fiber...I put a Timminy Custom Calvin Elite trigger set at 8 oz. It has an ATS tuner,a forward throw brake and a carbon fiber Bloop tube.
Shot 2220 on the ARA unlimited target yesterday. Mine likes Eley Match which I sort for rim and weight.
Great video as always
You certainly have yours figured out and hammering. Its a great rifle for sure
Great Video review. I have one and it’s truly special for sure. This is Miguel by the way. 🇺🇸👍🏽
Hey Miguel!! Nice to see you on the channel
Damn good shooting & damn good video! Will be following your channel 👍👍
Thanks!
Great video I have the carbon fiber barrel model shoots lights out
Have one in carbon with Midas tac 5x25z56 that shoots amazing
Begara is hard to beat man, one of the best bench guns out , im waiting on the new bmr I think they are going to be a budget shooter.......
Yeah i agree. Until you hit vudoo money i think the bergara and 457 are unbeatable at their price point.
Awesome video as usual…maybe some of that good shooting will stick with the gun when it comes back home
Lol thanks
I’ve got B-14r and the RimX and I love both of them. However, the Bergara has one major flaw and that is the bolt close. It has a very harsh spot when closing that takes way more force than it should. It causes the rifle to roll to the right when you force the bolt handle down. It makes it harder to make a fast follow up shot when you have to re-level the gun every time you cycle the bolt. If they could fix this error, this rifle would be unbeatable
Yeah i have seen that before on them
Just got mine yesterday,
Great review, I have the carbon version and it shoots great with center-x and sk standard plus, wanting to find a steel barreled action
Keep your action and order an internationalbarrels.com/
@@billsweeney6831 have definitely considered that, would like to see some more reviews on them first though
@@mxj2311 yea , me too. I just need to work on my fundamentals more. then try a new barrel
Nice Shooting. Your rifle in this video looks to have a Trigger Tech Trigger in it. Also the Bergara also is a lot like the CZ in the sense that the bolt has to extractors and does prevent the round from touching anything while it enters the chamber. Bergara has another gun in production that is similiar but will take smaller magazines. It will also have a more sporting style stock. 700 footprint also. I've got a righty carbon and a lefty steel.
Good eye sir.
I have the carbon fiber, it shoots .2 to .3 ten round groups with centerx so I'm not sure where you are getting the "not as accurate" info. It's definitely the best 22lr I've ever owned.
Bergara themselves even admit the carbon barrel version has poi shift issues occassionally.
Look up xring and his videos on the bergara carbon he got. Bergara sent him a replacement steel barreled action as a result
I remember xring having trouble, his video came out while I was waiting on mine to come in. I remember thinking oh crap, I just screwed up. However I must have gotten lucky. I don't even have a cold bore shift, unlike like my CZ. Last time out I shot 50 rounds at one of those 100yd bench rest targets that has 5 targets on it, 10 rounds each target, it was so consistent that I cut the targets and stacked them up. All 50 rounds went into a .38 hole at the exact same spot on the targets. It's definitely a tack driver.
@@22sniper70 yeah i think its just a few of the carbon versions that have issues. Another buddy of mine had the carbon and it was also crazy good out the gate.
Even though i am a die hard cz guy, i admit it, i really like the bergara b14r for its price point.
Its a great rifle for its features and overall cost for sure.
@@22sniper70 by the way i love your name hahaha
@@PursuitofAccuracy thanks its definitely my favorite caliber.
hello, could you make a video of shooting with different ammunition like cci standard, eley, remington etz thanks greetings from spain
Great review and thx for sharing :)
Thanks Oddur
Awesome shooting.
Thanks Andy
See if you can get your hands on a bmr 22lr , 22 wmr, and a 17hmr and test them all for accuracy for me hahahahah, love the channel brother keep up the good work
Haha, i appreciate it
Really a great video you put together on this Begara B-14 R 22LR. It seems your 182 yard shooting skills are better than the 50 yard LOL. New to 22LR rifles but looking for an accurate longer range one. CZ 457 or Begara B 14 R ? Or cheap route with the Ruger RPR ?
Not a fan of the stock. The barreled action is where I would go, just wish they had a 20 inch model.
Great video. I think this is the rifle I'll get this summer. The mini chassis is a bonus, I had a nice CZ 453 with set trigger that was stolen a few years ago. Haven't replaced it yet
Any sub 1k optics that you would recommend?
Great video love it
Thanks
Would you go with the B14 or the CZ 457? I like both and leaning towards the CZ. Just want a very accurate. 22lr for the range. Thanks in advance!
If I had to have 1......cz
That rifle definitely hammers! It won quite a few rounds shooting in the chicken house.
Shoots pretty good
I wonder if a lapping compound applied to the lugs and worked a bunch, reapply compound every so often, etc... then cleaned and apply bolt grease would smooth it up?
Its possible. I know people that lap them to smooth them out
I would really love to shoot against you however I am not much when it comes to computers and I wouldn`t travel very far to shoot a 22. I have a bunch of squirrels I can practice on since I live in the middle of about 600 acres of pecan orchard. I still enjoy your shooting.
I thought you said the cz 457 mtr that is a little cheaper than the bergara was the best for that price
Remember Xring's range test of the carbon BR-14?... His shot lights out at 50 and 100.... BUT...not very good groups out past 250 yards. He blamed it on the carbon barrel. What has been your experience with the rifle past 200?
X ring's carbon barrel version didnt shoot well at any distance. He had trouble getting it to group and with a lot of poi shift while shooting it.
Bergara even admits the carbon barrels can suffer from poi shift and have his replaced his barreled action with a steel version as a result of his video.
The steel versions do very well at any distance within reason, they wont be as accurate as a vudoo at distance but certainly hold their own.
Awesome 👌
Thanks
Would the combination of bergara b14r and athlon argos make in the prs production class?
Where did you find out that the carbon fibre one is less accurate? The barrel is still steel only it has a carbon fibre wrap around it. It’s designed to make it more ridged and most importantly even heat dissipation which should I create accuracy if anything.
Nearly everyone i know with one has poi shift or just less accuracy on average than the steel
@@PursuitofAccuracyhmmm, well something to consider now lol, I was set on getting the carbon one. Everywhere else I’ve looked, they seem to be more than happy with and say their identical. Back to the drawing boards! Thanks!
@@killaklinck the other thing to consider is the steel will balance a lot better than the carbon version
Nice
Where did you get the red spikes for the atlas bipod on the rifle next to you?
Wouldn't mind a stiff bolt lock. Thats a plus. But the 60 degree is the way to go. I got many groups with my varmint standard.. That are 5/16. At 50. Plus. 3/4. At 100. Cz baby.
I love me a good CZ
@@PursuitofAccuracy 😅😅😅😅
heh what's the cost difference between Begara B14r and CZ457 MTR ?
that may help some people on here because if money is no object the Voodoo is the way to go right !
@@DLN-ix6vf cz 457 mtr is 700ish and the bergara 900ish.
Vudoo barreled action is around 1600-1800 i believe.
What is "price point"?
@Pursuit of Accuracy Great reveiw, I was wondering if you know what height the scope rings are? Thanks
Low height
I'll stick with my Marlin 781 130 bucks shoot dime-sized holes at 100 yards in bad weather with a six power Weaver scope. That is a cool rifle though just a salty price.
The rem700 platform compatibility is what made the bergara so attractive to me, besides the accuracy of course.
I started with b14r steel barrelled action and will be swapping in a vudoo very soon.
If I wasn't so hopelessly addicted to all things rimfire, the b14r would be more than accurate enough for what I (and many others) do.
Side note- I shot a cz mtr the other week, it's another one to add to the list 🤦♂️🤣
Yeah being 700sa compatible makes it a lot easier for sure.
Haha sounds like you have your rimfire money spent for a while
@@PursuitofAccuracy the guns are cheap, it's all the accessories, ammo and scopes haha.
Im trying to be a cheap skate while still having a usable scope, but I know there's a serious optic coming for the vudoo 🤣🤣

I'd love to see some comparisons and reviews on scopes, bipods, bags, all the different prs kit.

@@PursuitofAccuracy legend!!
I look forward to seeing what you come up with
I know its not the most relevant for this, but what scopes do you like to run your 22s and what recommendations do you have, if you have any?
I personally run Athlon optics. I am using the helos btr gen 2 and the cronus btr gen 2 on my competition gun
Does the BR14R come with the pic rail or was that added by you or the owner? All I find for sale seem to miss that.
Its been so long i honestly cant remember
@@PursuitofAccuracy Thank you!
How does the rimx compare to the b14 R ,cz457 and vudoo? Also has anyone tried the Jp super match?
Im hoping to have a rimx on the channel in the future. I would put the rimx in the same category as the vudoo
Love your videos! I do have a question. Why did you say the steel version is more accurate? I have the carbon fiber and it shoots .2-.3. consistently with one type of ammo if i do my part, can just get a hair under .2. I watched your video right after I purchased the Carbon Fiber version and got nervous lol. Does the Steel version do better than that? If so I want one..maybe that would be an excuse for me to get another.
Really for a prs rifle you want the steel for balance
@@PursuitofAccuracy ahh. That's why you are the man. Keep educating me. I've come away with a bunch from your videos. Keep up the great work and thanks for the reply.
@@benjaminhayes7846 I appreciate it. I learn as much from you guys
I have this rifle and I've put about 6-800 rounds downrange. What should I be expecting for group sizes at 100yds?
I have some sub MOA 5rd groups and some 10 round groups that are close but it seems I have 2 fliers. I'm using CCI SV and Norma match. I did shoot a .9" 10 round group with Eley Target which is my best 10 round group but haven't repeated due only having had 2 boxes and much of them went to testing. Should I expect sub MOA 10 round groups with 'regular" ammo?
With cci sv and other value ammo, no.
With match ammo, yes
@@PursuitofAccuracy so if I can consistently shoot 5 Rd groups sub MOA at 100yds with CCI I should be happy with my rifle?
i am debating between the Bergara and the 457 to compete it factory class 22lr matches, which of the 2 would you recommend for that purpose? love your videos btw.
What are the limitations of the factory class?
Rifle under $1000. Must be original action, barrel, and stock.
@@spades9145 really a toss up there. If you prefer the 700sa footprint the bergara is the obvious choice.
I got a question. Let’s say you hated actuating the bolt. What gun would you pick. Like I think someone makes a bolt that you push pull. But who makes a really smooth 22 bolt.
Honestly.....kidd 10/22
The push pull are as much effort really
Browning T Bolt
Could you do a comparison video between this rifle the vptmtr and a B14R ? For the price of this CZ around 1500 compared to the b14r around 900. Which one shoots the best? Thanks

At the top of the leader board its really about the shooter not the rifle. The vudoo is the better rifle for sure but it doesnt give you any sort of competitive edge in our games against an equally good shooter with a cz
I was a major CZ fanboy. I've owned seven, 455's & 457's in total, and always thought they were the best bang for the buck after walking away from the Rugers and Savages that I started out with when I entered the world of rimfire. I just bought my first Bergara B14R (steel) a few weeks ago. Right out of the box it shot better than any of my CZ's - past and present, and I've had a few that I thought shot pretty good. And I won't even waste my time or ammo shooting at 50 yards with the B14R because it shines at 100 yds. There's that old saying, you get what you pay for and the Bergara B14R is worth the price of admission.
@@scarbourgeoisie its definitely a great rifle. Maybe i have had good luck with my cz's. My cz's shoot as well as the bergara but the bergara offers a lot in the way of compatability with 700SA compinents. Hard to go wrong either way

Great Review Josh. I bought a barrelled action thanks to yours and other good reports. I wanted the Remington 700 footprint so I could set it up as a trainer for my full-bore PRS rig in MDT chassis etc.
