  • This time we go over what is need to convert a Jeep TJ from an NSG 370 to an AX15. We also talk about what is need for the install like the Luk clutch kit amzn.to/33BQ4n5 and various other parts from advanced adapters. Swapping out the 5 speed in a 2004-2006 jeep TJ can be problematic because the CPS was relocated in 2004 and not many transmission have the correct mounting stop for this newer CPS location. The reasons someone would convert from the 6 speed transmission to a 5 speed are simply due to cost and reliability. The AX15 is know to be a more reliable transmission and much more cost effective than purchasing a new NSG 370 6 speed.
    Here is a list of part numbers from advanced adapters:
    26-AX15 - AX15 transmission
    712590L - 05-06 AX15 Bell housing
    716099A - Shift handle
    29-2341 - Red Line MTL 75w80
    I tried to find the part number for the expensive shift handle but could not. In my research though the handle is from Rockland Standard Gear and costs $177.36. It does need to be bent as well.

    I swapped the NSG 370 for a NV3550 on my 2005. I chose the 3550 over the AX15 for the gear ratios. Basically the same swap. I had to dress the mounting holes on the Advanced Adapter bell housing with a file for the crank position so it would trigger properly (apeared to be just a bit to far away). I had 175k on the 6 speed but I babied it. I miss its lower 1st gear but I dont miss all its quarks or wondering if it was going to die. I went with a B&M short throw shifter which I am very happy with.
    I enjoy your videos!

      Very nice. You are right that is pretty much the same exact swap. So far I have not had any issues with the progress I have made thus far. If I run into any issues I will be sure to update everyone. I can also see missing the lower first gear. But honestly, I would be happy to give up that gearing for a more pleasant transmission all together. Im glad you enjoy your swap. the B&M short throw shift sounds like a very nice upgrade. Thank you, I will try to keep them coming!

    Mark, wanted to mention this too. The vent on the ax 15 is on the shifter tower. I unbolted the tower and knocked out the press fit bushing. Then I tapped it and threaded in a barbed nipple, so we could run a breather hose up to the firewall. Other wise, you're gonna end up with water in it sooner or later.

    Thanks for the videos. Recently did the same swap in an 06 LJ. Went thru Novak. They sold me the ax15 with the straight shifter tower. I had no shifter boot issues. it literally came up in the exact same spot. Anyone considering this swap in a TJ or LJ I would make sure to get the ax with the straight shift tower. Bellhousing dowels can be found at summit racing.

      @EmbarkWithMark  2 роки тому

      I didn't there was anything other than a straight shifter tower. When I called I ordered this specifically for a swap and they sent me everything to complete the project. I did not need to mess with the bell housing dowels.
      So your transmission has a different style shift tower and it fits perfectly? Did your bell housing adaptor just bolt right up? Very Interested to hear how yours was to install vs mine. Thank you for sharing.

      @@EmbarkWithMark Yeah I noticed the hardware. Yeah Novak didn't send any hardware although they were helpful with bolt sizing thread pitch etc. The bellhousing was bolt in with accommodations for the crank sensor. My dowel pins were stuck in the old trans. Got tired of trying to beat em out.
      There is definitely two types of shift towers for these trans. where yours in video 3 does that s curve and comes up farther back. Mines completely straight no bend. The two boots fit over it like factory. Novak referenced their straight tower model as a "truck version" sales guy seemed to think it would fit better for my application, which it did. My first choice was Advanced but they were out of transmissions.

    05-06 uses a different flywheel than the 2004 and earlier. Advance Adapters sells both bell housings to properly locate the crank position sensor.

    Hi mark I am wondering what plate did you use between the bellhousing and engine block did you use the original 6 speed plate or find one for the ax15 and also what year If you did ?

  • @jimmyvalhalla1939

    I just put a new ax15 in my buddies 89yj. He had an ax5 with internal slave. His slave went out, so we pulled the trans and replaced it... lasted 4 days. We pulled it again and bought a junkyard bell housing from a 95 with an external slave. All of that conversion was good, except the ax 5 was on its last leg. We ended up with a brand new ax15 and install parts from advance adapter. Finally back on the road after 3 months of fight with it.

    What are your thoughts on the,
    4-Spd Automatic 42RLE vs the new manual trans
    I have an 06 tj rubicon, and wasn't sure to go auto or manual. After reading and seeing people talk about manual trans problems I went auto.
    I'm picking up my jeep (just bought) on Saturday. :)))

    Ok soooo
    Can you get these transmissions with a lower gear ratio??
    Will it bolt up with the transfer case without any problems?
    What will the RPMs be at highway speed?
    What gear ratio do you have in your Diffs?
    Will it be bullet proof when your done?

    • @EmbarkWithMark
      @EmbarkWithMark  3 роки тому +1

      Marlin crawlers used to have a lower first gear for these transmissions. I’m not sure who would install it though.
      Yes, it will bolt up without issues.
      RPMs will be depended on the axle ratio and tire size. I run 4.88 gears with 33” tires. I expect the rpms at highway speed to be a few hundred lower.
      The AX15 will surely be stronger than the nsg370.
      That’s all the info I have since I am still in the process of installing it.

    Seems to be a backward move from 6 to 5 speed. I can show you how to avoid your "crunchy shifting problem." It is easy. Just watch my video "Shift a 6 Speed Manual Like a Pro" and you'll never have this problem again, and your transmission will last the life of the car.

      You’d think. But I enjoy the 5 speed a whole lot better. And hopefully the reliability is better. The 6 speed in the TJs are plagued with reliability issues and are very expensive to repair.
