Anti theft is true. I left my old diesel 6speed truck running at the gas station once and a guy jumped in saw the stick and got back out, leaving the door open. I watched the whole thing while standing in line checking out.
From the first car I bought and paid for myself to present day, I have only owned and driven manual high performance cars. Until a time comes that I am no longer physically or mentally able, I will continue on the path that has become second nature to me. Right now I am 65 years old and I own and drive a 2003 SVT Terminator Cobra Mustang...my 6th mustang...all sticks. And no, it is not a garage queen, trophy seeking contest car. Nor is it a track hardened race car. My cobra is just my dream... a high performance street machine. I drive my prize 2 or 3 times a week in the summer and I use all 621 wheel hp of my modified mineral grey monster to get every single smile per gallon out of it that I can!
Oddly enough the main reason the Cobra I have now went up for sale was due to a physical disability of the previous owner where driving a manual was not as much of an option anymore.
@@Lethal_Venom that makes a lot of sense! They don’t have the easiest clutch pedals either unless you get into some of the twin discs!
I just taught myself stick with the 01 TJ I bought this year. Love it
I definitely agree that it's more fun. I do some light wheeling on the trails here in Montana and it's really no issue using the 6 speed in my Rubicon. 1st gear in 4L is especially impressive; you don't have to use the throttle at all when crawling, just brake and a little clutch even on 33's. I guess if I was doing more gnarly stuff in Moab or somewhere where higher gear and more throttle is needed to force your way up something I'd want an auto, but for crawling it's perfect in 1st gear/4L.
bought my 03 tj about 8 months ago. still in high school so mods aren’t coming constantly, did some pre cat cutouts so i can make it loud or quiet, learned how to drive stick and being able to have complete control of my engine and it’s loudness is one of the best feelings ever
Like my manual but technical rocky uphill wheeling is much more of a challenge with a manual and those are the times auto would be best.
I absolutely love manuals, I've often posted pictures on FB of the shifter referring to it as my anti theft device lol. I've enjoyed manuals in everything Ive owned from the Mustangs to the Subaru's.
I love stick during the winters here in Canada having the ability to engine brake helps soooo much plus it’s fun having to switch gears while driving
Just bought my son a 5 speed MT TJ in August and he loves it!
Kudos for doing that! The earlier they start to drive manual the better driver they’ll be. My dad said it best when I was your sons age “if you could drive manual you can drive anything”. Cheers ✌🏽
97 tj for the win.. Love it
First stick was a 69 bug convertible. Black on red with a black interior. Loved that car.
Just bought an 03 tj with a black top, red exterior and black interior with the the i6 and 5 speed.
had a manual, 04 corolla for 12 y ears.... got me through some hard times, and it was slow, but still fun to drive. It also kinda forces you to think a couple steps ahead
I’ve been tempted to manual swap my XJ but I always decide not to but I think that’s for the best - a Wrangler with a stick is definitely something I’d be interested in, that or some sort of compact car. If I got a truck one day I’d want it to be a manual.
Rev matching is so fun.. Love banging gears
Love my manual TJ!
yayaya
Me to! So much fun to drive
My 08 JKU is a manual and I not only never plan on selling it, but also never driving an auto. Way too much fun driving a manual and someday we'll be one of the few individuals that will still know how.
It is difficult to work 3 pedals with two feet off-road especially on inclines, declines, and any off-camber situations. So, put a throttle lever on the stick shift knob so you only need to work 2 pedals with two feet.
manual tj gang wya
I hear you man, I drive an automatic and I gotta say it definitely gets boring sometimes. I do know how to drive stick but never owned one but thats gonna change this summer. I going to get a manual. As far as feeling connected to the vehicle I 100% agree on that. That's something in which I feel you don't get with a lot of vehicles nowadays with all those thousands of features they got. With that I feel less in control (some I'm terrified of). Lane assist, adaptive cruise control, some vehicles like tesla you can just let the car drive itself and I'm thinking where is the fun in that? I would rather have something like this where you actually drive instead of being lazy. As my awesome mother will say, and I quote, "automatics are for city folk".
Aye I love stick I learned how to on my 05 TJ and I’ve loved it ever since!! Speaking of wish my luck as I light have to do an engine swap so I’ll either go for another 4.0 or a big 5.7 V8😂😂😂🤞🤞
You're just more involved in the experience rather than being more 'along for the ride' with an automatic. I love my 5-speed TJ.
The manual gearbox in the TJ doesn't feel good, it's very vague... If your a driver enthusiast you know what I'm talking about.... It's not a Honda or Porsche manual gearbox..... I never found the charm in manuals in off-road Vehicles or trucks like other folks.... Obviously a must in sportscars ... when your off-roading last thing you wanna do is deal with a manual especially when stuck. Don't most rock crawlers use Auto?
The 3 speed 32rh that came in these is a really good transmission. Pretty reliable, simple and it's 3 gears helps with the torque... The 4 speed with overdrive was actually trash that would come with the later Rubicon.......
Wow, you hit it out of the park... there is something nice about driving a old clunker with a manual gear box... I had a orange Mercury Bobcat with a 3 speed gear box. It was ugly as hell, but fun to drive and that car was laughed at, but it made me a better driver in my teens.
Thanks!
Manual is the way cars were made, mechanical and connecting the driver to be one with the car and I don’t think I can ever go back to an automatic, I’ve got a Jk rubicon 6 speed and I have a NA Miata 5 speed and I never had a time where I regret buying and driving either one. One of the reasons why I didn’t want to buy a newer car is because less and less manuals are being put into these newer cars because less and less people actually know how to drive them!
I’m 23, spent a bunch of time on clutch dirt bikes as a kid and motorcycles, my 2000 Jeep TJ which I’ve had for the past 5 years is the car I learned to drive stick on, frame is SHOT but I love it so much that I’m redoing the frame and the entire car now. But driving stick is my magic trick for a youngster 😎💯
@@jk-474 Same here. I'm 21 and learned to drive stick on my 2000 Jeep TJ 5 speed. I still have it now and can't bring myself to sell it and get a more practical car.
@@jackd2173 Even living in the NY suburbs (Long Island), it’s still a VERY practical car. Some places I’m stopping more than others since they’re more cramped, others I have more distance. But even controlling the RPMs to stay low once I settle on my speed, I’m burning less gas and putting less pressure on the motor. It SHREDS through snow with the 4 wheel drive, I’d say it’s practical regardless of what any detractors say 🤣👍🏻
With a Stick you can start the engine by rolling the car in neutral then popping the clutch in first gear...
You can't do that with an automatic transmission.
Also, Jeeps were originally made with the stick and it just adds to the nostalgia of the car and its way more fun to drive than a automatic. Stick drivers in my opinion, are better drivers because they are more engaged with the drive... as soon as you drive a car with a stick, you know its about the feel, the sound and the road your mind is connected to the car completely. This makes you more sharper as a driver and your skills improve over time. There is nothing I can say for a automatic jeep other than its not much fun and its more common for people who are use to the engine calling the shots. 😆
I have a 2.5 Auto. It’s slow but what’s the most annoying is no overdrive gear. Just 3 speeds running constantly at 3K RPMs. I’ve had a lot of sticks but off-road I really don’t mind the auto. It decreases things to focus on and helps me just focus on terrain and driving off-road.
Sounds like you have the 32rh gearbox which is as reliable or more then the manual. Only problem with Later autos with overdrive aren't as reliable and the computer dealing with the overdrive engagement is a pain in the ass.... And it's slow? Aren't all jeep slow? Lol.........
Hi there! This is excellent. I almost thought I should trade my Jeep in for a automatic 😢. You helped a lot. I want to know if I am on the highway and going 50 and then the traffic is coming to a stop and I shift into neutral thinking I have to stop. Let’s say the traffic starts moving and I need to go but now I am in neutral, let’s say I am going 20 mph, should I shift into 2nd? What if I stall on the highway?? I am in Chicago and people have zero patience. Appreciate your help! Thank you!!
Thanks! Glad I can help! Yes 2nd will be fine for that speed. You will not stall. Here are some videos that might help you out more!

Just ordered a 2024 jl 2 door manual rubicon
Goals for me is an automatic as my daily and stick shift for the toy
I went with auto (42rle). In my 2.4L 04 TJ. 4 speed with overdrive. I can shut overdrive off and rip around at 5000 rpm if I want to. Or when in OD I can drive hours to get to far away trails it's runs 2200 rpm at 65 mph. I get 19-21 mpg. I don't have deep pockets. I use my Jeep for overland stuff not rock crawler stuff.
The 32rh Auto is better. Simple 3 speed helps deliver the torque. And the 32rh is more reliable.
Good video! I drive a stick shift '06 Toyota Corolla. Definitely makes driving more fun even on a crappy old car. The only thing I find difficult sometimes about driving stick is that it's alot harder when you're barefoot. Any chance you could do a video demonstration on how to drive barefoot better? It would really help get me of- I mean help me out
Doesn't driving a terrible gearbox make driving more of a chore? I feel like a there's a placebo affect going on with people saying it's fun driving a crappy manual or a crappy chassis with a manual........
anything manual is fun. auto is so boring
@@KyleSVT not for myself and others with similar philosophy. There is such a Thing as a bad gearbox in terms of engagement and tactical feel; a good example of a good manual is any 911 or an s2000..... A terrible gearbox is very annoying and ruins the driving experience. Ask Mazda speed3 owners. And in the case of the TJ Wrangler or any offroader the manual usually doesn't ad anything to it's experience. In fact it becomes a nuisance especially when off-roading..... The logic of "all manuals are fun" is like saying "all pussy is great" when we all know that's not the case.......
lol what
@@MiguelGarcia-vj7oo I believe in your case you mean "not all dick is great"
that mic quality is crazy, nice video quality.
Thank you sir!
Love my JT especially more bc of Manny!!
All car here in the UK are stick shift apart from bigger luxury cars. I completely agree that driving is heavy stop go traffic it become a pain but like you I don’t have that problem.
I love my auto Jeep tj but sometimes I wish it was stick
for on road manual, for off road, the automatic is way easier and imo fun. my 2 cents
How am I supposed to smoke and drink and play with my phone while I’m shifting gears?
What kind of armrest is that. I been looking.
Its the stock center console
@@KyleSVT oooh, ok cool thank you. First time buying a 2000 Jeep Wrangler. No carpet or console so o I thought these are aftermarket or didn’t come with one. Thank you.
If you are new to driving a stick, please avoid San Francisco until you had many years under your belt.
wife has 2001 4.0 5 speed I have 2001 4.0 3 speed auto same gears both are 3.73 gears hers is a dog cant use 5th gear only on straight road my Jeep with blow hers away she can never keep up with me on a road with any kind of incline , I love 5 speeds to but iam now 61 and just got old driving a stick 5 speed jeeps need nothing less then 4.10 gears
Wish my tj was manual lol
…and, when your battery is dead, you can get it rolling downhill, pop the clutch and you’re on your way!
Is it harder to put it into 4H and 4L? I don't know stick yet but I plan to when I master my driving skills and move into a quieter place where I don't need to stop as often
Why do you think putting it into 4H or 4L is any different with a manual tranny? Putting into 4WD has to do with the transfer case which isn't any different. Sounds like you never drove a Jeep.
Stick shift allows you to be more engaged with the car. You know what RPM you want and that feeling when you downshift, rev match to pass someone. That’s something no automatic transmission can ever give you. I don’t care how great the DUAL CLUTCH or PDK is, it’s just boring to drive any sports car that is automatic.
I’ve always said this to people for years. A fast car that isn’t manual isn’t fun and you might as well just go ride a bullet train.
I already know why it’s the best but I’ll still click on a random video telling me why it’s the best because it’s the best.
Well thanks for clicking and watching
I dunno about the “focus on driving” reason…when I was growing up, I would have my cell in the left hand, holding the wheel with my right hand. When I would shift, I would quickly let go of the wheel, shift real fast and grab the wheel again. Hahaha.
My daily is a 13 Civic 5MT, and my weekend Jeep is a 2000 TJ with a 5 speed, either of these vehicles would lose their personality completely if they didn't have a manual transmission, I would not be able to daily a civic at all if it wasn't manual, I think it was a big mistake for Honda to scrap the manual in the base trims this generation.
I disagree on the jeep losing personality if it was auto. See with wranglers or anything that's not a driver's car.... It's not a big deal..... On a vintage BMW 2002, it's an absolute tragedy. The manual is one the most important aspects of the vintage drivers car experience.
The biggest factors what gives the TJ it's "character" is it's utility, design, daily usability, and annoyance for driving a tractor with a license plate....... The manual on these are not great... It's not a air-cooled 911 or lotus elan manual.... And for some folks dailying a TJ is already hard, the gearbox might make it a worse or better experience. Again from a certain perspective.
Now Honda makes a really good Manual gearbox. They feel great. So having it in a basic bitch civic will totally add to the experience if that's something someone values.......
The manuals in TJ are great
First car- 2010 auto mustang
Second car- 2002 lancer stick
Biggest mistake I’ve made changing auto for stick
Hate it so much
I was gonna learn stick with a beater car so I could buy a stick mustang and not fuck up the car
Not gonna happen
Once I destroy my 32rh I’m going ax15
Just your opinion.
great insight mark. what else do you have for us today? read the caption he literally says its his opinion.
Mark definitely wears ankleless socks with rolled up jeans and talks about the bachelorette with his friends
Meanwhile in Greece nobody knows how to drive an automatic even thiefs 🤣
U r wrong
