  • You may recall a few prior videos that are centered on Renee's love for gardening. To date, we've just had a few raised beds next to the back of the house but there is little we could grow there due to the menace of deer that cross our property.
    A legit, grown up garden with a fence around it has been on our agenda well before even purchasing this particular property. This dream is finally realized and we are elated to share this milestone with you.
    We'll take you back to some highlights of the build out going as far back as April but the conclusion of the video was shot in early July so we could show you the garden in full swing. As I write this description in early August, stuff has grown and flourished even more! In short, we're thrilled with the results and can't wait to give you the grand tour and show a few bits of the build process.
    Thanks for watching!

    I did what you just did last year in 2022 and found it was SAD success in the garden. My husband was not on board and this year we tore it all up and started from scratch with in ground beds. One thing We were happy about is having the landscape fabric down all winter killed all the weeds and we were able to start with a clean slate. My husband torn up the landscape fabric. We brought in a truck load of compost from the organic local dairy farm. We planted everything directly in the ground and we are so amazed at the success. In addition to adding drip irrigation and some terrific fertilizer. We didn't toss the metal raised beds. We just added onto the garden and moved them over to the edge of the in ground garden. I found that some things grow better in raised bed. Everything has drip irrigation and that has been a game changer for sure. Good luck next year. Like you said it's a learning curve and as gardens of 30+ yrs. we try new things and learn something new all the time. We had a great successful growing year 2023. Canned over 80 quarts of tomatoes, over 100 onions, potatoes. ect.. still picking....

      I don’t think I mentioned it, but I added hardware cloth under the beds. It’s kept the moles out. They still burrow under the fabric, but they haven’t broken through… yet.

    I think you both did a wonderful job and the garden is amazing! Seeing that soil when David was auging, I wondered why you didn’t plant inground? It’s so beautiful compared to my dry clay soil. Raised beds do look nice, though, and probably a lot easier to tend. Congratulations! You can’t say you’re not really a gardener anymore. 😂

    • @hesaid-sheshed
      @hesaid-sheshed  11 місяців тому +1

      Hi Cynthia! I did use the soil he pulled up to add to my grow bags, so it did not go to waste. The soil is actually really hard clay and takes a lot of water to even get the grass to grow. And, the moles are terrible! I put hardware cloth under each galvanized bed to keep them out. It’s working well so far. I didn’t do that in my raised beds by the house and they are a constant issue.

    • @cynthiafisher9907
      @cynthiafisher9907 11 місяців тому

      @@hesaid-sheshed Oh, how interesting! We don’t have moles in SW Idaho, but we do have an occasional gopher to deal with. Right now I have hired a trapper to trap a marmot(like a groundhog). He ate all my green bean seeds-twice! Ergh! These critters! Glad you haven’t had to deal with any more moles.

    Nicely done! A classic example of "mission creep", as you said.
    Also, as you're aware, this is Garden 1.0. There will be Garden 1.0b, c, d, then Garden 2.0, 2.1b, etc, etc. That's the nature of this kind of project. By the time the growing season is drawing to a close, you'll already have developed a list of woulda, coulda, shoulda, and can ponder on implementing bits and pieces of the lessons learned before next Spring.

    I love it!! love that you put down mulch instead of gravel..so much nicer for the land, and heat transference. I love how green everything is too, I live in the desert and we have various shades of dead right now with it being so hot.(115F) we have just a ton of rocks too here...raised beds the way to go. Are you in Oregon or Washington?

    • @hesaid-sheshed
      @hesaid-sheshed  11 місяців тому

      Hi Elizabeth! I like the mulch too. And we found a local guy who gets it from an arborist. I didn’t care what type of mulch it was, so it was really reasonably priced. I thought about rock, but thought it might be too industrial looking with the galvanized beds. I think they add a warm, organic feel. We live in Washington. ❤

    • @hesaid-sheshed
      @hesaid-sheshed  11 місяців тому

      Hi Stella! I repurposed some of the fencing to trellis the tomatoes. I think it’s hard to see in the video. It’s made it so much easier to prune. Next year, I’ll likely only plant 2 in each bed. It got a bit jungle-like. And I may plant some pole beans too. My tomatoes are taking a long time to ripen.

      Hi tiffanykrievans! Most places just call it "horse fence". We chose 6' tall but thats not quite deer proof which is why we went with taller posts so we could add the single wire up high. We purchased the fence at Wilco but any sort of farm and garden or home improvement store.

      @@hesaid-sheshed Thank you for the info. I've seen deer fence and thought this was similar. Yes we have lots of deer so need to find something strong enough while in a decent price range. Loved the video - first time on your UA-cam!
