I'm very introvert though I make quite a lot of public speaking, sometimes to large audiences (2-300 ppl). If I can give one tip it's to keep this in mind: they're not ennemies, they're not judges. They want you to be interesting and most of them are genuinely interested in what you have to say. Imagine you're talking to a group of friends. And know your subject. Practice, practice, practice. Full voice in front of a mirror and use a timer. The more you know your subject the more relax you will be. Think about your driving licence exam vs driving the kids at school 10 years later. Mix those two with the tips of this video and you'll be good. 😉

And also think about giving them a good show. Make them be attentive to you! Do not think they would judge you or laugh at you, even if they do, that's okay, other people might judge them for laughing. I've had years of public speaking and singing experience so i know the first time would always be scary, but the second and third time's, you will get used to it! If your having a presentation, i advise you not to add too many details like a essay, you won't be able to remember all those.

@will9491 will9491 It was the definition of akward. I was the only one that day who was presenting just by himself. Everyone else was in the group. I said maybe half what I knew. I could not properly express myself and I was visibly uncomfortable. I made them laugh once which was not even intentional. The only consolation is that a lot of other people were just as nervous and akward as me.

I do public speaking now and then. My advice, to avoid looking down at notes or lose your train of thought, is to know the subject matter and know it well. I do not use notes, because my outline power points are filed inside my brain. Make sure your voice is in good condition by refraining from dairy products and keep your throat conditioned. I use lemon water and salt water gargles. Take in a deepest breath possible and exhale a few times. My style is to make it seem like I'm having conversations with my best friends. Just some tips I use.

Whenever I have to speak publicly, I tell myself that no one wants to listen to a shy person who doesn't have any engaging body movement. People ADMIRE confidence and energetic speakers and that's how I do well: I want people to admire me because I know that if I'm shy, they won't have any admiration for me.

I want to thank all of people in the comments. I've learned and been encouraged by you, as well as been able to not be so hard on myself. I've spent years studying in seminary and the areas i serve in the community, I do with all my heart. I was recently ordained, definitely not my plan but I made myself available and answered yes. I get nervous when public speaking but for the most part, no one really notices. I am my biggest critic. I have gone through times of convincing myself that I am not walking in my calling, just because of the feelings of nervousness. I know that's not true no matter how strong the feelings, and how loud the insecurities may seem. Don't quit. Take the risks. Learn from the mistakes. Celebrate the little victories. Grow through the process. Your message to the listener is important. 💗💪

I completely agree on having pauses or as what I'd call "Pacing." It gives so much depth to your speech and it gives time for the audience to digest what you're telling them. I also have to work on being more organized and not going around everywhere giving as many examples as I can, most of the time i just confuses people.

Graduating tomorrow and my mentor wants me to give a 5 minute speech on stage.. my schooling definitely challenged me, but public speaking being one of my biggest fears feels like my final challenge.. I wrote out a speech and memorized all key points, I'm still bringing cards with the key points just in case I get lost in a crowd of judgmental eyes, just hoping I don't start stumbling over my words, that's when I usually start shaking.. man the tests of life are a bitch but god damn does it build character through humiliation. 37diamond, first step is to pay attention to your words. By saying "Im am shy" you are just adding fuel to the fire of your self believe of being shy.
Say out loud "I am more confident every day".
What you say out loud you create.
You are not shy with people you know.
You are most likely afraid of people's opinion of you.
Speak out loud this statement every time you catch yourself about to say "I am shy'.
Say "Other People's Opinion Is None Of My Business!"
With this statement you will become more confident in time.
Be the person you want to be before you are that person....

I'd add one somewhere, either as a stand alone or in support of one of the original points: Talk to what you know, don't try and sound knowledgeable about something you are not. E.g. Someone asks (challenges) something that you are weak on, or is somewhat outside the domain of the presentation, be honest, reply in credible fashion, don't try and fake it. Be confident and honest.

This video helped me realize multiple things. One of them being the importance of being organized and give information, but only when it's important. If I ramble throughout the speech the impact and how meaningful the speech is will be reduced. Simplicity is also a very helpful tip when it comes to public speaking. If you make information easier to understand the likeliness of the audience following along will increase.

For me the most helpful tips, or the ones I need to work on most are a confident gesture, talking clear and not too fast, pausing every once in a while and making direct eye contact.
Last week I presented my thesis and for a 20 minute presentation I used about 60 slides. Almost like a pecha kucha, with only one core idea or image per slide. I think it worked pretty well because the teachers listening to my presentation had already read my thesis so they were up to date with my key points already. Normally I wouldn't do it with so many slides but I think it worked out pretty nice!

"One thought, One look" I've always thought that yes, eye contact with people are important and necessary in speaking , but whenever I'm speaking infront of alot of people, I tend to just look at the whole crowd. This one did made it more clearer to me that theres more to it than just staring at people. Thank you!!

As my channel name states, I would love to inspire. Tonnes of knowledge. But when it comes to public speaking or even talking into a mic alone... wooden is a perfect way to put it. Ive been gaining more and more confidence with each video created but still have to climb outta my rigid shell and relax a bit... just be natural. Thank you for the tips. Ill be rewatching this one until the points stick.

The tips to “simplified notes” and “confident posture and gesture “ are the most helpful to me as i always get nervous when i dont remember the the sentences that i was supposed to say and the more i fidget with my hand the more i get nervous thus i cannot deliver my point brilliantly and left the listener unable to comprehend what i’m trying to convey.

I think the most thing that can help me from these video is organized & concise. It is because based on my experienced giving a speech or presentation, my weakness is I frequently forget the main point of my speech and sometimes told an unecessary point,in other words rambling and too longwinded. Therefore with this method,I think it can prevent my weakness in giving speech and my speech will become more confident to hear than before.

For me personally, I think my presentations would benefit from being able to get straight to the point in an organized, concise message. I'm looking for an uncluttered conversational style speech. For my audience to appreciate my message I think it would help to create a speech outline that can point me to the smooth transitions in between the introduction, to the body to the conclusion. One thought, one look is also a great tip to know how to maintain eye contact.

As I was sharing at Church today I felt like my points was too jumpy and not clear.
I like the eye contact point as I feel like I totally was just jumping from face to face.
I'm trying not to be down with myself because it was my first time.
But I can ponder back and reflect on what not to do and what to do better.
    Thankyou

The “don’t overload your slides” would help me the most in this list as it show us how to talk more spontaneously rather than reading the slides. I know students don’t have confidence when they don’t have the script with them but as you practice more then you will better at it.

I am reminded of the line from "Planes, Trains and Automobiles", when Steve says to John - "when you're talking, at least have a point."
At work, you are usually communicating with people who are somewhat informed already.
Either re-inforce a known, or tell them something better and new.
Don't waste their time, they'll know it and resent it.

Confident and loud voices with pauses would probably help me the most because I believe when someone can talk with a confident and a louder voice, they can get the audience's attention. It doesn't matter what the content is about, but with confidence you can talk about anything without feeling nervous.

for me i completely agree that we have to make sure that our presentation is organised and concise so that we stay on the right track when we speak, so that people can get the information clearly. I also agree with clear and simple slides, it should not be too long, or else it could be confusing to listener and the lecturer.

Your point about being prepared is great and true. Unfortunately, me (this semester) and many other professors teach three classes (all different) and I only have 42 hours from my last class on Monday night to my first class on Wednesday. In that time I need to sleep two nights, eat, and do plenty of other things, not to mention my research job requirements and my service job requirements. Unfortunately, of all those things, paring down the prep time is the most viable so that I can fit everything in. No question here, but just a note that many of us just don't have lots of getting prepared time. I end up working on weekends to fit everything in.
