- Meet Scolopendra hardwickei, the Indian Tiger Centipede, one of the most stunningly coloured centipedes on the planet. But there's more to this animal than its spectacular appearance; the species also has a rather shocking mating ritual!

Female hardwikei a true keeper. Her bf paralyses her with ❤, she wakes up wooed and smitten. This is the inspiration for our favourite Disney classics!
Well that’s certainly one way to put it. Now we need an animated Disney Pixar movie about centipedes…
Everyone talks about Australia having dangerous wildlife but India is no joke!
Oh India has much worse. Nothing in Australia can rival a tiger in terms of danger to humans.
Makes me wonder if some males get rejected if their venom isn't potent enough? Maybe it shows the lady just how strong he is and if she's impressed she goes ahead with it!
I always appreciate your centipede videos. Not alot of people care for them enough to make good, informative, content about them. Looking forward to more!
Centipedes… spin webs?? How did I not know this??
That’s one of the main ways to sex them, as the males possess a spinning organ. But yeah, I was pretty surprised first time I found out too.
Wait *wuh* (i did not reach this part of the video yet)
Another great video!!! This is a species I was already aware of but never knew anything of their bizarre mating behavior, that is absolutely fascinating!! Thanks for the insight on this subject :)
If you aren’t already aware, I’ve started a Discord server for the channel. Feel free to join!

Great vid as always. Beautiful centipede this Hardwickey
Woe their huge thanks for sharing 👍🏿 😀
Nice, this was pretty interesting. I've been waiting for this one too lol
As always I leave your channel feeling slightly more intelligent from the schooling I’ve received. Many thanks.
MALE CENTIPEDE GIGACHAD BASED
Haven't checked recently but about 10yrs ago these were fairly easy to find in the UK hobby. I've had two of these myself in the past and they were certainly feisty, even by centipede standards, but I still loved them.
maybe the female is resistant to the male's venom and she lets him inject it so she can determine how strong it is and if he's worth mating with?
as for the colors, most of them do look like black stripes, but in a couple of the ones shown, they do look more blue. maybe it's not black, but a more navy blue, which is almost black.
and the part where segments 7-8 are the same color. . i'm wondering why it evolved that way. That section betrays which end is the "front" end, which kinda cancels out the purpose of the back end looking like the front end.
A clever predator might be able to "learn" to look at that to determine which end is the front. Seems more like a disadvantage. . .
Why are these large centipedes restricted to tropical or sub-tropical regions?
Not entirely sure, but I’d say it’s mostly due to prey abundance and overall habitat suitability. There are big centipedes in more arid/temperate areas too, but nowhere near as many.
Excellent video as usual! What a fascinating creature. The fact both sexes have different components to their venom is interesting, correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that the same for the male and female Sydney Funnel Web spiders?
I was a little shocked when you said that in general, the courtship of centipedes is a gentle affair; I was expecting it to be a practice similar to the praying mantis with the poor male risking it all for a bit of nooki... for a chance to contribute to the next generation.
Scolopendra hardwickei is the gem of it's genus "ya fackin beauty"
Scolopendra paradoxa might give it a run for its money though
@@BugsandBiology yeh it might
Love these guys. Awesome video! I do wonder what the reason/cause of this strange difference is.
As I said in the video, I think the courtship ritual is the reason for the difference in venom.
@@BugsandBiology Oh I know I'm wondering why it's different in these centipedes
@@ScytherwolfYeah that is a bit of a mystery. Such a unique courtship process. Makes me wonder why such a thing would evolve.
May I ask what the verb used at 4:50 is? Something phonetically similar to "flouter"?
Flaunted
Thank you.
omg he ruffies the female!!
Centipede bites really hurt, I know. I can take bee & wasp stings but when bitten when camping for example I will pull apart the whole tent & gear to get the offender & mercy is not an option. Lol
I have a pet tarantula at my house, her name is Terra and she has white markings on her legs, what species is she?
Brazilian white knee or skeleton leg maybe
@@ethant6270 Brazilian white knee. I remember now.
is this why theyre like $1000
Thank you! Glad I'm not a female Scolopendra! 😆
Haha! At least females of other Scolopendra species have it easier in courtship.
Do these centipedes sometimes have more red segments or is that just how the colour came out on some of the photos? Great video by the way, really interesting!
I do believe that some have a deeper shade of orange than others. I think they’re the ones from rainforest habitats, while the lighter ones come from drier areas. But I could be wrong; perhaps it’s just random variation.
