Has Coyote Peterson KILLED This Centipede?

  • Brave Wilderness recently posted a video featuring two centipedes: Scolopendra dehaani and the undescribed Scolopendra sp. "white leg" (mislabelled as S. gigantea in the episode). And the latter of the two centipedes appeared to be in very poor health, which is what I'll be discussing in this video.

I haven't watched Peterson in years due to how he treats these animals but holy fuck I didn't realize he got this bad. That poor creature didn't deserve that. If they're gonna exploit these animals for their own fame and satisfaction, the least they can do is look after them properly. I only wish I could boycott them more than I already am.

I saw this video posted on reddit, and was a little skeptical of the initial claim as I have never raised centipedes, but something definitely felt off in the initial clip. Appreciate the analysis by an expert, I think you're right on the money on your diagnosis. I used to watch coyote years ago, but it always felt like he was sacraficing a more educational approach for videos that will get more clicks by the alogorithim. Don't think he should get "cancelled" over this, as I agree the husbandry likely was not his responsibility, but he needs to take this as a learning lesson. You can't bullshit all the scientists and nerds on the internet, he'll need to do better. If I see another example of mistreatment to wildlife, and in particular arthropods, then he's done in my eyes.

To everyone who sees this comment, the centipede belongs to @prestons_predators. You can see the condition of the centipede when he got vs to it's current condition. That thing has been suffering through this for a while now and honestly he really doesn't even care about the centipede. On his page he gets a lot of attention free handling it so the centipede is nothing more then just a meaningless object to get him attention. When this one dies, it'll only be replaced. The dude knows nothing about inverts and has poor reptile knowledge too..what a surprise.

I was willing to give Coyote the benefit of the doubt up until he responded by saying the animal was just fine. I do not know enough behind the scenes and it could be he himself is making that point or being told that he should say that to save face - but regardless, I think that is pretty appalling. You are an utterly massive UA-cam Channel, and the lack of accountability is disgusting.
I did watch him early on when he was recommended all the time, but quickly grew tired of "the bites" and realized it was more for attention than anything else. I did get the memo that he does care for nature and wants you to respect it, but I also thought there would be a break in "getting bitten" after the executioner wasp, but now, those get those sweet, sweet views though.
Great work as always. I am not a fan of reacting negatively to people or things but there are times where it's deserved.

I've had many giant speicies and a few that I tried to rescue from pet wholesalers, that they gave to me because they came in looking like that one, usually only survived a few days to a couple of weeks after bringing them home.
Once the antennae started to look like that, and they couldn't even crawl on something usually easy for them to hold onto like human skin unless they were directly on top of it and level, it was pretty much over for them. You shouldn't have to be a safety spotter for a centipede because it might fall by accident. You should only have to be ready to catch it if it jumps or rapidly drops off on purpose.

“Exotic pets” are extremely diverse, and you can’t tar the ethics of keeping them with one brush. Some exotics, like primates, are quite frankly something that shouldn’t be kept as a pet, period. While many invert pets are far safer and more ethical than most if not all more “conventional” pets. Many of the more popular pet inverts like tarantulas, scorpions and centipedes do very well in captivity and exhibit all of their natural behaviours. Their basic needs are incomparably easier to meet than those of a dog/cat, and they are on the whole, much more ethical. There’s no environmental issues (cats are a major concern here in Australia), they aren’t riddled with genetic problems from decades of inbreeding, they don’t require enrichment, and won’t keep your neighbours up at night with their incessant yapping.

That is why I don’t find any more reaction videos. Actually I enjoyed them more than the paleontology videos. Extinct animals are already long-dead, but the extant ones need our help to at least have some more time here before joining the other ones. I understand why reacting to stupid content is tiresome in the long term, but please keep this content going from time to time at least. Sadly ignorance on those animals still remains and my perception is that it is somewhat increasing. Also mycosis in centipedes is a terrifying disease once I learned about it. How can something survive without a functioning head for so long? Coyote Peterson seems to dial up shock value over time. I don’t think that he is directly responsible for the husbandry of the centipedes or knows necessarily what is wrong with it. However, there is a whole team of specialists around him, and someone should have noticed.

Reaction videos eventually became extremely tiresome and boring for me. There’s only so many “top 10 biggest spiders” videos I can watch without it becoming a chore.

@@BugsandBiology you can always brunch out to reptiles, monotremes and amphibians or semi aquatics. I am I’m awaiting for something snake related for example for so long, but it isn’t coming. They faced the same issues, prejudice and misconceptions as arthropods. Paleontology doesn’t have as much to do with the modern world. Yes, it informs us about the evolutionary relationships or changes in the ecosystem over time, but it doesn’t foster any appreciation for modern life. Or at least this is my opinion and I might be wrong. But many Paleo-fans are chronically online and aren’t so keen on modern diversity or even dismiss it. You don’t get outside for herping for example by reading something Paleo related.

I’m curious about ants Canada‘s husbandry. He does some very elaborate enclosures like simulating a rainforest.

I have no respect for anybody who doesn't care for their animals properly. I still resent myself for not better caring for my Oscar fish when I was 17. But esp a professional. I am not watching his channel anymore.

I am a subscriber to his channel, but aware of his problems. He's like Austin Stevens of the snake world who has been criticised for dramatising wild exploration by unnecessarily provoking the animals in the name of conservation.
I understand the need for entertainment since people seldom engage in intricate scientific documentaries, nor do they watch a decent zoological handling of dangerous creatures.
While I don't deny his passion for wildlife & absolutely admire his courage to take those toxins, his way is perhaps too far to be wildlife education.

I don't know the first thing about insects but this guy has always struck as somewhat of an attention-grabbing phony and his way of handling animals not the most humane. Poor, sick creature. RIP giant centipede.
At least he's not one of those mukbangers that eat live sea animals. 😕

Don’t worry, your beautiful drop of the F-bomb informed us about your opinion of Coyote and his pack.

I used to watch him and enjoy him a ton when I was around 10 years old. I loved animals so I liked how he showed them up close, but even then I didn't like how he would force animals to bite and sting him. He discomforts and provokes the animals in his videos just to make money. Instead of trying to educate his audience of primarily children, he just taunts the animal and provokes people to be afraid of certain creatures. Poor centipede.

It’s a good thing I lost interest in Coyote Peterson’s videos years ago.
