Exotics Lair's Centipede Care is TERRIBLE

  • I'll be honest, I've been hesitant to react to Exotics Lair for a while, but many people have wanted me to respond to his centipede video, which shows some very poor husbandry, so I finally decided to go for it.

As expected, this video seems to have some mixed reception compared to my usual reaction videos. Of course, I anticipated that would be the case given the fact that my analytics show EL is the channel most viewed by my subscribers.
I want to clarify that this video is not intended to be hateful or vitriolic at all, but since his husbandry is objectively very poor, I felt the need to point it out so that none of his followers are misled. I've seen a couple comments about me sounding smug/rude, but honestly the manner in which I've responded to this video is no different from any other; perhaps it just seems more offensive when the video is from a channel you know and follow. I simply prefer to be blunt with my criticism, and I understand that doesn't appeal to everyone.
Of course, at the end of the day, anyone and everyone is wholly entitled to criticize this video however they like, as I made the decision to post it in a public domain. And the same applies to EL's video for those exact reasons.

I've only had my Scolopendra s. since mid-September, after purchasing him at an expo. He's is housed temporarily in a basic plastic shoebox setup with a bamboo hide, and five inches of damp substrate(he burrows all the time, I love it). I'm moving him into a ten gallon tank next week, and I'm so excited for his upgrade. They're such a beautiful species that demand respect.
I'm honestly very disappointed and ashamed with the "care" of his centipedes, especially since he has a large following, and people might mistake what he does as acceptable husbandry. It's like putting a leopard gecko in a paludarium.

Not going to lie, I did name one of my stromatopelma calceatum "Queen F**kface". Got her from someone who was too scared to deal with her anymore. Everything greatly upsets her, she eats males, she's extremely fast, will climb feeding tongs if allowed near her, and unlike my other highly defensive tarantulas she will charge out of her web. Still love having her, but you're not kidding on how scary they can be compared to some animals. XD

I think he tends to keep them a little dryer since he lives in a tropical rainforest/monsoon climate practically right on the equator. Giant centipedes just crawl into his house from outside sometimes. I'd imagine he'd have a tough time with mycosis on any desert species though.

I watched EL a lot more often before I actually got inverts myself. I wouldn't consider his channel to be fear mongering but I do think he has more of a focus on entertainment, and that (in my opinion) isn't the best idea for a subject like inverts- things most people don't know a lot about and are probably scared of already. I thought OW tarantulas were 10xs scarier than they really are thanks to EL lol. Turns out, they aren't scary- just demanding of respect.

It's not necessarily the amount that's a problem, especially since Scolopendra subspinipes are more of a semi-arboreal species, but that substrate is completely dry and can't hold a burrow either. Plus there's no hides, so the centipede can't really shelter anywhere at all.

What do you think centipedes evolved from? Do you think they are more closely related to or part of the Pancrustacea (Hexapods and crustaceans) or the Arachnomorpha (Chelicerates, trilobites and relatives)? As far as I can tell the most popular taxonomic grouping for myriapods is the Mandibulata hypothesis, uniting them with hexapods as descendants of crustaceans. But I have heard there is also a hypothesis based on DNA analysis that groups them with chelicerates, but that seems strange. They look to me kind of like armored onychophorans or lobopodian worms but as euarthropods, so maybe they descend from some kind of anomalocaridid descendant or whatever lineage out of the lobopodia that gave rise to actual arthropods, and they did come onto land a lot sooner than the insects, in the SIlurian at the latest, so I dunno, it seems to me like myriapods may be really basal in the arthropod evolutionary tree.

    • @BugsandBiology
      @BugsandBiology  Місяць тому +1

From what I recall, myriapods are mandibulates like insects and crustaceans. And they do possess the group’s characteristics, like mandibles and antennae. Might have to do a deeper dive into their evolutionary history at some point.

I have a friend who works with invertebrates (bio major too) and he says Centipedes are worse for handling than tarantulas. He says centipedes are untamable while tarantulas are somewhat tamable. Additionally, some centipedes eat tarantulas.
I do disagree with some things in his snake care. For one, says he doesn't thaw the rodents in hot or warm water because it can cook the rodent or grow bacteria. Well, lots of keepers that rodents in hot water and that has never had a problem and hot water from the tap is not hot enough to cook the rodent plus it helps if the rodent is warm since snakes can scense heat. Plus you could just seal the rodents in a plastic bag and thaw them in hot water if bacteria is that big of a deal, but snakes would not have much issue in ingesting bacteria as there's probably lots of it in the animals they would eat in the wild. Additioanlly, he also hand feeds his snakes (and while I know he's not the only pettuber who does it) that's still a huge no in snake keeping as that's just asking to get bit. Grabbing the rodent means the scent is now on your hand and since snakes rely heavily on scent and heat they would not be able to distinguish what is the rodent or your hand if your holding the rodent directly (due to heat signature), where's the tongs will not give off the heat signature and your hand will be out of the snake's strike range. I see he was tongs in this video so I wonder why he doesn't use them to feed the snakes. Because many look up to him, he should use safe practices by not hand feeding and setting an example for others.

While I will agree that, on average, giant centipedes are worse for handling than tarantulas, I’d probably say it’s the opposite as far as “taming” goes. Tarantulas don’t seem to show many signs of getting used to handling at all, while centipedes can exhibit rather shocking changes in temperament if worked with properly. It’s not a straightforward process admittedly, and some centipedes respond to it far better than others.

Not sure if u write a script. But I really really really love All of your spider vids!!!!! Ur raw and fresh! Great animals they are :-)
Honestly I’m a huuuggeeee snakes and spiders girl and not really into centipedes. No offense, just there not as fascinating to me. I love the way snakes eat, and also the diverse way spiders hunt and eat. You are the only person on this world though who has gotten me to really love THE SFB. So thank you and I have seeN MOST OF your vids on the “menacing” infamous spider. I assume ur in Oz, is it hard to own tarantulas here? I follow Tarantuala Kat, most of her animals are quite entertaining (and she did an incredible video on debunking the brown recluse apider- although relevant in US she has ALLLOOTTT OF SPOODS! I’ve also watched a few tarantula videos especially about the Goliath BE and Brazilian wondering spider. And yeah I’m not saying u have to get one but please DONT STOP DOING YOUR REACTION VIDEOS!!!🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂😂
I also love your handling of the gorgeous orb and I’m tempted to give it a cuddle too next time I see one! So precious!
Can you please point me to the videos where u were talking about seeing some old world Ts jumping! That would be cool!

Thanks! I only write a script for the informative videos where I cover scientific discoveries (such as my videos on prehistoric animals, and the newly discovered funnel-web), as there's often a lot of details to be mentioned, and I could miss something important if I just went off the top of my head. Otherwise, my content is unscripted.
I'm so glad I was able to change your perception on funnel-webs; they really aren't as scary as many people would have you believe. I am indeed located in Australia, and I wouldn't say it's hard to own tarantulas here as people have been breeding them for a while and they're fairly available. However, we don't have access to the wide variety of species available to overseas keepers due to this country's very strict import laws.

@@BugsandBiology That's true, the only video I found on youtube that shows centipedes being kept as pets was Exotics Lair and then yours, the rest are all just animal abuse videos of people pitting various animals against each other. I'd feel much more safe getting a tarantula or scorpion because there's extensive info about which ones are docile, which ones flick more/less hairs, which scorpion has the least dangerous sting etc. I cannot find the same amount of info about centipedes. The other thing I'd be worried about with them is escapes, I don't worry so much about myself being bitten but more about my cat being bitten and the video of exotics lair, with the centipedes escaping out of their habitats, didn't exactly make me feel safer with them. It's really their venom that freaks me out, I love millipedes for example as they're harmless detritivores - detritivores are my friends (I keep isopods). It's hard to find info and that makes me feel insecure and worried about keeping them. They are super cool to look at (and I do believe in desensitization, I beat my phobia of bees by exposing myself to them) but I feel like I'd be going into it blind, much like Exotics Lair probably did. I saw you have centipede playlists tho so I've got these opened and am making my way through them. I still think they're super cool pets but not for me right now.

Have you seen Bugs on camera?
He's not exactly of pension age...
Besides, if you put your knowledge/skills on UA-cam for the world to see you're going to attract criticism - constructive or otherwise.

@@pauln6803 yeah but still no one is perfect. Even teachers make mistakes. I feel that if people truly are concern about his ways they would instead contact him personally instead of ridiculing/expressing hate through a video. I think its kinda fucking retarded ngl

If we have two people who keep Centipedes in their enclosures, and one knows more than the other, then the logical step would be to exchange advice. I don't know if it's neccessary to be rude to one another. I fully understand that it's EXTREMELY tempting to call someone out for their incompetence, and REALLY pound them to the ground for it, but let's TRY to be in the Christmas spirit and be nice to each other.

If four centipedes can escape an enclosure setup within a single day or so, I think they’re objectively shit. Calling them that isn’t being disrespectful, it’s being honest.
Also by what metrics are you an “expert”?

Thank you, I just don't like that why did you bully him? He only learn now, so instead you can message him some tip to become better?
