- In this video Brad covers centipedes! Learn about their diet, habitat/maintenance, humidity, and heat requirements, as well as some general cautions for dealing with centipedes. While we mainly touch on Giant Vietnamese Centipedes, a lot of the care species to species is generalized within this video. I’d recommend a secure plastic tub with ventilation holes on the side. Metal screens can damage their appendages
Hey, I appreciate the caution as cocky beginners can put themselves in bad situations. However, pedes are less aggressive then you and most people make them seem. I've handled many in my time, they are my favorite invertebrate too. In my experience a centipede won't bite me unless they are in a vulnerable state or I'm actively bothering it with my hands, which makes sense as their venom is a precious resource. as long I make controlled, calm movements they seem to be fine crawling all over me, I don't know where you got the idea they bite you just cause you are "unstable" and "fleshy". having it crawl up your tongs does not have to be an extreme affair especially if you have practiced handling them. the typical response I have is to let it crawl up my arm, take my other arm and place it in the pede's path so that when it climbs on it is crawling towards my hand, and place my hand on the substrate of it's enclosure so that it crawls back in. I will say that there are individual centipedes who are especially problematic, asian pedes especially, but those are the minority. two important tips for dealing with centipedes: 1.DO NOT WEAR LONG SLEEVES or roll em up high when dealing with centipedes 2. watch the terminal legs of the centipede, raised terminal legs indicate defensiveness
Yeah my Scolopendra dehaani just bit and killed a cricket for no reason yesterday. It never scavenged it, just let it die in the enclosure. I am never, EVER recommending the general public to handle Scolopendra

I just ordered 2 species of centipede in my first import order. I am use to keeping tarantulas and scorpions and these will be my first centipedes. Thanks for making this video. It is quite helpful information for a newbie to pedes like myself. I'm super excited to have some in my collection. Along with them I ordered a camel spider, a giant vinegaroon and a couple Pac-man frogs (strawberry and patternless emerald.) I cant wait for this order to arrive!!!

Just get small ones, i have a small black centipede, when i handle him, he just cleans himself. He's a beautiful, but small specimen and the the pride of my life.
I found one outside so I was curious on taking it and keeping it for a while to see them do their stuff.

I love all the information you gave very informative. Also i caught a wild one but it’s only 1 inch irs red and black . Also got s another 1 inch long but it’s super tiny and skinny like a baby one got them together after I found them that way

How do you know if they’re actually eating? I have a Dehaani that I’ve literally never seen since putting it in the tank.
Centipedes if they bite can hospitalize a person; aside from this another danger is infection. I agree--NEVER handle them, and make sure they do not escape.

My centipede is 3 centimeters are ants a good food for that size?
Ants are really skinny and strong, so I don't think they'd make good feeders, too much danger for too little food. For small guys like him usually people use cut mealworms or maggots, pinhead crickets and baby roaches are also good

I've heard that centipedes can chew through a mesh screen, is there any truth to that?
if your tank has a mesh covering it should simply be a lot higher than the centipede is long. As stated in the video, they cannot climb glass, so there’s no reason to worry about whether they can chew it or not.

Are chinese red headed centipedes good as pets? Are there care relatively easy care? After seeing Tokyo ghoul i really want one
Wouldn’t recommend jumping into a pet due to seeing a show, centipedes are dangerous and need a lot of care. I’d recommend doing a lot of research and finding out how strong their bite is so you know how dangerous they are
@@Twistedsleep yeah I did do a lot of research Not many people have Chinese red headed centipedes so it's kinda difficult to get advice for them tho most centipedes aren't a good idea especially because I have no experience with venomous creatures experts worn other experts so it's probably a good idea I don't touch centipedes till I get sum experience
My experience consists of lizards dogs cats and birds lol
How often should you feed it
I feed mine about 2-3 crickets every 3-5 days. Make sure you clean up the leftovers to prevent illness.

I don't think that feeding any vertebrate is a good idea soley for the sake of the vertebrate. They basically register pain the same way we do, and you wouldn't put a dog through a torturous death would you? Invertebrates know that something bad is happening, but don't register pain the same way we do, so it's morals and ethics im talking about
If you think about it, there brains registering something bad is just a nicer way to say pain. They don’t enjoy that sensation and don’t have vertebrate pain to compare it to. Everything is relative so even if the pain is technically less or felt in a different way it will feel the same to the animal.
Not trying to argue I’ve just had that whole shpeel in my head for a while and never got an opportunity to use it, sorry for being that guy.
@@CentipedeGuy I get it. I mean it is true that we will never know what other animals feel, especially invertebrates like insects. However, have you ever seen some bugs after they're injured? They continue on living as if nothing happened. They do not stop moving out of pain, they do not rest, nothing. They can have their legs ripped off or their abdomen ripped open, but if they can continue living and functioning, they will. In nature if an invertebrate catches a vertebrate as prey, then it's fine cause it's nature. But in captivity it's torture. Again, if a centipede was big, you wouldn't be feeding it dogs and cats to be eaten alive would you?(Not necessarily asking you in particular, its a rhetorical question)
It’s the circle of life, not a big deal for something to eat a vertebrate
Use the brain you got some people shouldn't be allowed to even look at pictures of predatory or venomous animals being they're dumber then beach sand. I keep venomous ( currently only 2 western diamondbacks and a western hognose) and have seen first hand how stupid some people can be and the animal usually winds up paying for their mistake with its life
