Honestly for me Fire emblem and Radiant Historia are the 3DS RPG games that changed my life. They're so touching, I couldn't tell you how many times they made me cry. They're games I would have regretted not having bought for a lifetime.
My first two Fire Emblem games were Sacred Stones (I got the game for free in the Ambassador Certificate) and Awakening. Literally those games and Smash made me a Fire Emblem addict.
A surprise hit I consider for the genre is Stella Glow. I love games with ensemble casts and it has a great hi-fantasy feel and voice acting, multiple endings and amazing music (which is good, since the story is very music centric.)
The 3DS is such an amazing gaming system and JRPG machine! I’ve had so many amazing hours with that little device! Thankfully still sitting on a nice collection of games to still play in my backlog. Hopefully a few of these franchises can move on to the Switch.
I love my 3ds, I wish some of the games that I wanna get cuz Ive never played or even heard of before they sore in prices. It's a shame, I get it but also like just sell it for me to $50 haha
I doubt they'll release them for the switch, those games are unique, I have most of them on my 3ds, it's a shame that people didn't give it more attention, but the console lasted the 8 years it needed, these games, they could have better graphics and there are many games that support them, for me to stay where they are, just get all the ones that are relevant to you and keep them safe and play them whenever you want.
The main reason I got a 3DS was due to the JRPGs that were available. I usually don’t do a lot of handheld gaming, but with games like Xenoblade, Dragon Quest and of course Persona…you can’t go wrong. Great video brother. Excellent picks!
Same here! I don't particularly like handheld gaming but there are so many great games on Nintendo handhelds I always get them anyway. It's a big reason I was so excited for the Switch when it was announced.

It's very chill and I love all the gathering and crafting stuff. Plus it's just nice, comfy, and positive so it's a good breather from something more serious or dark (nothing wrong with those! Just need something lighter sometimes)

Excellent video! I have so much to catch up on with the 3DS in terms of JRPGs. I am a big Pokemon fan, so obviously, I would recommend those and even Yokai Watch! Lots I still need to play!!!
You sir, just gave me a whole list of things to pickup for my 3DS. I was also a bit late to the party for the 3DS. I didn’t have mine til around 2015 and it mostly saw 1st party titles in its life span. In the last 2 years however I’ve really amped the collection. Love that you mentioned Dragon Quest 8 because as you l recently acquired that gem! Cannot wait to dive in! Never got the chance to play Radiant Historia, but I’ll try and make that my top priority to by for next jrpg on the system. Always take your opinions and recommendations to heart brother! Good taste! I love all the games in there that I've played, and also I'm fond of the ones I haven't played or finished too. I laughed pretty hard at the end where you talk about a time you bought a game on a whim on release, then as part of your next thought you say you can't afford to buy a game on a whim.
YES! Finally someone that understands the EPICNESS of Radiant Historia. I talk about that game on my channel constantly and always recommend it. Perfect characters, music and story. The combat is what really makes the game interesting, fun and not a chore. Kudos for that being your top pick!
Too bad they made the braindead choice to go with some irrelevant dubbing instead of the real deal, rendering the game unplayable for players outside of murica. Actually, they made that choice for a lot of games on 3DS, arguing about voice over taking considerable space on the cardridge, when it's something that's been debunked. Gamers not versed into gross ethnocentrism had either to turn off the voices, or endure the cringy and amateurish acting through the game. Not buying was often preferable, though. I still remember how they did SMT IV dirty. Criminals... Happy that Japanese editors got their head out of their ass for some time now, and understood that we're not all uncultured swines.
Great list! The 3DS is a JRPG machine, with it's DS backward compatibility it's THE greatest console for JRPGs. Here are a few very underrated 3DS RPGS: 7th Dragon III Code: VFD, The Alliance Alive, and Legend of Legacy. I guess Alliance Alive did well enough it was ported to Switch, but I feel the other two were low key releases that didn't garner much attention, but they're all excellent games. I hadn't heard of the 7th Dragon series before and bought it on a whim and it turned out to be one of the most fun JRPGs I played that year. Also surprised you didn't mention the Etrian Odyssey games, all of which were great.
Have you ever played the Etrian Odyssey series? They're first person dungeon crawlers similar to Strange Journey or the the Persona Q games but you draw your own map on the bottom screen as you explore. I am currently playing the newest game, Etrian Odyssey Nexus, and am loving every minute of it!
@@HallowedBeThyGame you have...a hell of a list ahead of you. There are FIVE of the Six "Main" series available on the 3DS, all physical and digital. Remakes of the first two games, IV, V, and Nexus. But, if you want, you can get a decent grasp of the series by playing the free demos. Everything except Nexus has a surprisingly good demo! There's also the Etrian Mystery Dungeon games...but they're pretty mediocre compared to other Mystery Dungeon games.
So many great games here! I didn't play redux (only the DS version) but I agree that Strange Journey is so so good. And SMT 4 is one of my favorite games of all time. I don't know if Fantasy Life counts as a JRPG or action-RPG but it hands down is one of the best games on the system. I've been looking into getting the Yokai Watch Games, Etrian Odyssey games and Fire Emblem games for 3DS

Hi there, I'm new to this channel, really loved this video. I also adore JRPGs. As far as my collection is concerned, I would recommend the Bravely Series ( Bravely Default & Bravely Second ) and the Etrian Odyssey games ( If you love first person dungeon crawling AND map making ). I also have this game titled Stella Glow. Haven't started it but many JRPG lovers I know love it to bits. Great game but underrated...that's what many of them say to the point I personally see Stella Glow as a Cult Favorite. 👍❤

Im glad i was able to pick up all the smt games on sale on the 3ds. Also, I have had physical copy of PQ and never went through it so i picked up my 3ds and started playing the game. So far i really like it!
So many good games! An underrated game from the DS era I'd reccomend is Lost Magic. You play as a spellcaster and have to draw your runes! 3DS game I'd reccomend is Crimson Shroud which plays out like a tabletop D&D session!
A must own for me would be: -Liberation Maiden -Etrian Odyssey series -all SMT -Project X Zone series -Kid Icarus -Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate Edit.. My bad for not reading the "JRPG" label. Forgive my ignorance.
Well I’m sold. Just went and grabbed SMT4, Dragon Quest 8, and Radiant Historia digitally. Also ordered Tales of the Abyss (physical) as it was not available digitally. I’ve never played a mainline SMT game but adore the Persona series so I’ll give it a shot!
I like it better, bravely second, it seems more interesting to me, it has improvements in combat and an extensive post game, I also love the story with magnolia. and monster hunter stories. At first I didn't like it, its combat style, but seeing everything that game offers, the mounts, the story, everything is great, if they had left the combat style of the original MHs out the best game ever.

Man, Riadiant Historia looks so damn good. I had never really heard of it before now but the more I see, the more intriguing it is to pick it up before the shop closes.
The 3DS was a very impressive little piece of hardware. Being able to fit games like MH4 or MH3U which had entire underwater fighting areas. Xenoblade chronicles, an entire world where you actually walk everywhere. And Project X Zone getting some rep yo :))) that game is hella fun and it was nice to see so many different characters interact
Don't forget there is still publisher sales going on since 3ds eshop is closing. I just got all the megaten games all over 75% off. So far it's been capcom, Sega, square Enix, atlus, I'm sure them and others will continue to do so similar to that of how often they do on switch.

Great list of jrpgs! Though for my personal recommendations to check out if you haven’t yet are any of the Etrian Odyssey games (preferably Nexus) and Fantasy Life! I have put literally hundreds of hours into Fantasy Life and never finished it to completion because there was so much you could do in the game not to mention you can jump online with friends to grind dungeons and farm for valuable resources. Also, instead of classes, it had the Life system, where you’d choose from many different jobs to level up, from knights, archers, mages, to even none combative jobs like miner, fisherman, or blacksmith, among others. Each Life also had there own main and side quests to raise their rank, so there was always something that needed to be done! End game dungeons though were brutal though.. like mmo levels brutal. Still though, Highly recommend!
It's my first time on the channel, great list buddy, i just got Dragon Quest VII and Dragon Quest VIII physical because of the impending 3DS eShop closure, my first Dragon Quest game (which i'm still playing right now) is Dragon Quest XI on Switch and i'm loving so i decided to pick up those other 2 can't wait to play them both :)
For those who prefer it on original hardware instead of the HD ports, there's also Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance - plus all of the older DS KH games. Personally, I would also throw in the Theatrhythm games (Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest) as a nice diversion with a boatload of music available to just enjoy.
Seems like you have similar taste to me, I've got everything on this list except for DQ8 - my SMT games for the 3DS are digital though, prices got crazy!

I always knew the 3DS was a great jRPG system, but I've not really indulged in these - even Xenoblade, I played it on Wii and eventually Switch. Awakening was my entry to Fire Emblem to be fair as well. The ones that seemed most interesting here are the SMT games and especially Radiant Historia - I've heard amazing things about it. [Edit: yeah, a shame the 3DS shop is going]

You should definitely give the Etrian Odyssey games a shot. Starting with Etrian Odyssey IV: Legends of the Titan, then the remakes of the ds games. Etrian Mystery Dungeon, Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate, and Code of Princess are also worth your time. My teenage kid has put 100s of hours into Fantasy Life and still picks it up infrequently, however, I have not tried it.
Radiant Historia Perfect Chronology is my favorite 3DS game of all time! I like the art style of the game and I picked up this game on the whim as well. I was lucky to get the special edition with the other physical goodies. The soundtrack is also amazing. Oh yeah, I also enjoyed Stella Glow. Great JRPG. Maybe cheesy to others but I don't care, best 40 hours well spent.
@@HallowedBeThyGame The funny thing is I both picked up radiant historia and stella glow special editions on the same day and I was lucky to get the last copy of Stella glow. My brother who doesn't play JRPG games watched me play both games and he got emotionally invested on the story too. You can tell the story of both games have emotional weight when someone who doesn't play JRPG game gets hooked on the story like it was an anime show. I hope you get to play Stella Glow. Such an amazing underrated game. I love both games equally.

Been playing my 3ds since launch (well that november, was waiting for the zelda 25th anniversary because I KNEW we'd get some special stuff, got the 25th anniversary glossy black with gold engraving console.) I've spent thousands of hours on jrpg's on my 3ds consoles.
I just started playing radiant historia & man it’s got me hooked! I really can’t wait to finish it so I can head back into DQ8 lol. I was feeling some type of way with how the 3ds only has solid rpg titles but so far I’m not disappointed.
Haven't tackled much of my 3ds library yet but you pretty much hit all of the ones I made sure to pick up already. I have heard stella glow is a solid title and honestly I adore bravely default's art style. That game definitely has some pacing issues but it's still a solid game that's exclusive to the 3ds to this day. Tales of the Abyss was also another port that was great on the 3DS. I can't understate how surprising it was that they managed to cram xenoblade chronicles into the 3ds. It ran great and looked good enough considering the platform. Even though I owned it on the Wii at the time, the 3DS is where I played it to completion. The switch remake has a lot of quality of life improvements along with that expanded epilogue but I missed the original art style like some others have. In the end any xenoblade chronicles is good xenoblade chronicles though. Good list! I'm looking forward to my playthrough of Radiant Historia one day.
i gotta say, your top 1 choice is the best choice i've ever seen, because i love radiant historia, i played it on nintendo ds first, and when the port came out, i played it again... the game is just so good, except the character portrait, i like the old one better!
Very interesting list, I don't really ever think of the 3DS as a place for JRPGs (though after giving away my PS2 version of DQ8 I immediately bought it when seeing it for the 3Ds and I'll probably get DQ7 soon). I agree with others who have commented on Tales of the Abyss. If you don't have access to a PS2 and a PS2 version of the game, play it on the 3DS to atleast experience the story. Cool video sir.

I agree with this list but... in my opinion i would fit in 7th Dragon, Etrian series and the bravely default and second. but as a SMT fan i cant fault you for loving the series ;) nice list!! your number 1 surprised me, didnt play Radiant Historia, i do own it so i should open it up and get to it i guess.

Another great list of suggestions! I might not have played the majority of them but they're all titles from beloved franchises so I've heard about them! I bought a brand new sealed copy of Radiant Historia on the 3ds about 3 months ago... it wasn't cheap but my friends kept telling me that if I had to play only 1 game on that system, then it should be that one! I was super late to the 3DS as I'm not a huge fan of the 3D aspect of the system but I also bought a New 2DS XL at the same time so that should bother me less! Great video and keep up the good work!

My choice is a game called Conception II Children of the Seven Stars....the characters are pretty generic, the story is bad....even bordering on obscene 😬, the battle combat is uninspired and the artstyle is okay. The music / soundtrack however is mmmmmmm.....too good 🎶🎶🎶 There's a main menu theme called 'Harvest Code' which will (very oddly, but soothingly) echo in your head for days🤣😅💖

Radiant historia is just an amazing game. Had it on the DS, if you are a rpg fan, not necessarily jrpg. You just want a good epic story you can't go wrong with that game
You are a big fan of SMT huh? Anyway, your experience with Radiant Historia is similar to mine with Utawarerumono Mask of Deception (for the Vita back then, now also available on PS3, PS4 and Steam): I picked it up on a whim, but boy am I glad I did. I even got the genre wrong back then, I thought it was an SRPG, but it's more of a visual novel with a some SRPG battles for a change of pace. But damn, the characters and story are soooo damn good. The only other story that can compete with it for me, across all types of media, is Ascendance of Bookworm, the light novels in particular.
So many times on so many people's lists, but so be it if it's number one. I have thankfully several of the already listed games. Took me forever to get shadows of valencia.
I really hope some of these games get remastered eventually especially the SMT games and Radiant Historia. It would suck if they were stuck on 3ds only. Most of them are already super expensive physically lol

I still cannot put my 3ds down… it’s CHOCK FULL of my favorite JRPGs, rpgs, farming/life sims and puzzle games… all the best handheld game types. It’s much much much more portable to me than my switch. Even though I play handheld or use my Lite more often, I still prefer to take my 3DS out. And it’s so easy to keep on my nightstand and play some relaxing puzzles before bed or kill time with a fun jrpg. I’m gonna miss the 3ds era. I sold most of my collection in a tough time financially and I really regret it. I’m trying to get even some of it back, I have one 3ds xl modded with tons of games but I’m looking for a “new” model but they’re criminally expensive.
There should be differentiation between download only and those with physical copies. I’ve only got 1 month left to buy everything I need and I got to narrow it down.
Etrian Odyssey 4 is a lovely game, great dungeon crawler very atmospheric with great music. I can also recommend SMT Soul hackers great port. SMT IV is a masterpiece. Radiant Historia perect chronology is amazing. SMT strange Journey awesome. Dragon Quest 8 is a must play masterpiece classic JRPG. Lot's of love for the 3ds is an amazing system for jrpg lovers. Also check out Tales of the Abyss awesome Tales game.
Great list. One thing I'd like to add, is if you already have Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright/Conquest, buy the Revelation DLC. It adds a whole new story route, that is not only (arguably) the best of the three, but it also recontextualizes the other two. The difficulty also strikes a great balance between not being too easy, but also not being too challenging
Yeah I made sure already ago I get all my favorite atlus 3ds games, in fact I pre-ordered strange journey redux in spring of '18 even though had my switch since year before was still playing my 3ds a good bit, I already has both devil survivor re-releases for 3ds and got radiant historia, think Alliance alive was my last 3ds release I picked up for 3ds. Awesome video
I LOVE Project X Zone and the sequel and am so happy they got a call out. They are just so much fun. And I am interested in Dragon Quest 8 but honestly, I never got into the series so pass for me. Strange Journey's is another good one.

I've never been into jrpgs, never played them as a kid. However Fire emblem is one of my favorite series, I've played since the GBA. Radiant historia: Perfect Chronology and Shin Megami Tensi: Strange Journey redux look absolutely incredible. if they were an anime i'd be all over them so i think i have to grab them both before the eshop closes. Physical copies for both are the most expensive on the system nearly.

Problem is more of "too long jrpg", there are rpg and jrpg around 10-20 hours worth every hour but bloated rpgs are the common case sadly.

Same here! I don't particularly like handheld gaming but there are so many great games on Nintendo handhelds I always get them anyway. It's a big reason I was so excited for the Switch when it was announced.

I loved Tales of the Abyss on the 3DS, it was the first game I bought for the console as I was a fan of Symphonia and Vesperia.

I don't have too many 3DS RPGs, but I absolutely love Fantasy Life! It's very chill and I love all the gathering and crafting stuff. Plus it's just nice, comfy, and positive so it's a good breather from something more serious or dark (nothing wrong with those! Just need something lighter sometimes)

You sir, just gave me a whole list of things to pickup for my 3DS. I was also a bit late to the party for the 3DS. I didn’t have mine til around 2015 and it mostly saw 1st party titles in its life span. In the last 2 years however I’ve really amped the collection. Love that you mentioned Dragon Quest 8 because as you l recently acquired that gem! Cannot wait to dive in! Never got the chance to play Radiant Historia, but I’ll try and make that my top priority to by for next jrpg on the system. Always take your opinions and recommendations to heart brother! YES! Finally someone that understands the EPICNESS of Radiant Historia. I talk about that game on my channel constantly and always recommend it. Perfect characters, music and story. The combat is what really makes the game interesting, fun and not a chore. Kudos for that being your top pick!

Too bad they made the braindead choice to go with some irrelevant dubbing instead of the real deal, rendering the game unplayable for players outside of murica.
Actually, they made that choice for a lot of games on 3DS, arguing about voice over taking considerable space on the cardridge, when it's something that's been debunked. Gamers not versed into gross ethnocentrism had either to turn off the voices, or endure the cringy and amateurish acting through the game. Not buying was often preferable, though.
I still remember how they did SMT IV dirty. Criminals...

Great list! The 3DS is a JRPG machine, with it's DS backward compatibility it's THE greatest console for JRPGs. Here are a few very underrated 3DS RPGS: 7th Dragon III Code: VFD, The Alliance Alive, and Legend of Legacy. I guess Alliance Alive did well enough it was ported to Switch, but I feel the other two were low key releases that didn't garner much attention, but they're all excellent games. I hadn't heard of the 7th Dragon series before and bought it on a whim and it turned out to be one of the most fun JRPGs I played that year. Also surprised you didn't mention the Etrian Odyssey games, all of which were great.

Have you ever played the Etrian Odyssey series? They're first person dungeon crawlers similar to Strange Journey or the the Persona Q games but you draw your own map on the bottom screen as you explore. I am currently playing the newest game, Etrian Odyssey Nexus, and am loving every minute of it!

There are FIVE of the Six "Main" series available on the 3DS, all physical and digital. Remakes of the first two games, IV, V, and Nexus.
But, if you want, you can get a decent grasp of the series by playing the free demos. Everything except Nexus has a surprisingly good demo!
There's also the Etrian Mystery Dungeon games...but they're pretty mediocre compared to other Mystery Dungeon games.
So many great games here! I didn't play redux (only the DS version) but I agree that Strange Journey is so so good. And SMT 4 is one of my favorite games of all time. I don't know if Fantasy Life counts as a JRPG or action-RPG but it hands down is one of the best games on the system. I've been looking into getting the Yokai Watch Games, Etrian Odyssey games and Fire Emblem games for 3DS

Hi there, I'm new to this channel, really loved this video. I also adore JRPGs. As far as my collection is concerned, I would recommend the Bravely Series ( Bravely Default & Bravely Second ) and the Etrian Odyssey games ( If you love first person dungeon crawling AND map making ). I also have this game titled Stella Glow. Haven't started it but many JRPG lovers I know love it to bits. Great game but underrated...that's what many of them say to the point I personally see Stella Glow as a Cult Favorite. 👍❤

Im glad i was able to pick up all the smt games on sale on the 3ds. Also, I have had physical copy of PQ and never went through it so i picked up my 3ds and started playing the game. So far i really like it!

So many good games! An underrated game from the DS era I'd reccomend is Lost Magic. You play as a spellcaster and have to draw your runes!
3DS game I'd reccomend is Crimson Shroud which plays out like a tabletop D&D session!

Well I’m sold. Just went and grabbed SMT4, Dragon Quest 8, and Radiant Historia digitally. Also ordered Tales of the Abyss (physical) as it was not available digitally. I’ve never played a mainline SMT game but adore the Persona series so I’ll give it a shot!

I’d also say Bravely Default (despite it’s flaws) is one of the best games on the system. Also Monster Hunter Stories is pretty neat and overlooked.

I like it better, bravely second, it seems more interesting to me, it has improvements in combat and an extensive post game, I also love the story with magnolia. and monster hunter stories. At first I didn't like it, its combat style, but seeing everything that game offers, the mounts, the story, everything is great, if they had left the combat style of the original MHs out the best game ever.
Bravely default has flaws? Outside of the loop and needing a broken set up to beat the game, it was pretty great overall
What flaws? I dont think there is any bad design within that game.

Man, Riadiant Historia looks so damn good. I had never really heard of it before now but the more I see, the more intriguing it is to pick it up before the shop closes.
My favorite 3DS game.
The 3DS was a very impressive little piece of hardware. Being able to fit games like MH4 or MH3U which had entire underwater fighting areas. Xenoblade chronicles, an entire world where you actually walk everywhere. And Project X Zone getting some rep yo :))) that game is hella fun and it was nice to see so many different characters interact

Don't forget there is still publisher sales going on since 3ds eshop is closing. I just got all the megaten games all over 75% off. So far it's been capcom, Sega, square Enix, atlus, I'm sure them and others will continue to do so similar to that of how often they do on switch.

My favorite JRPG in 3ds is Braverly Default
Great list of jrpgs! Though for my personal recommendations to check out if you haven’t yet are any of the Etrian Odyssey games (preferably Nexus) and Fantasy Life! I have put literally hundreds of hours into Fantasy Life and never finished it to completion because there was so much you could do in the game not to mention you can jump online with friends to grind dungeons and farm for valuable resources. Also, instead of classes, it had the Life system, where you’d choose from many different jobs to level up, from knights, archers, mages, to even none combative jobs like miner, fisherman, or blacksmith, among others. Each Life also had there own main and side quests to raise their rank, so there was always something that needed to be done! End game dungeons though were brutal though.. like mmo levels brutal. Still though, Highly recommend!

It's my first time on the channel, great list buddy, i just got Dragon Quest VII and Dragon Quest VIII physical because of the impending 3DS eShop closure, my first Dragon Quest game (which i'm still playing right now) is Dragon Quest XI on Switch and i'm loving so i decided to pick up those other 2 can't wait to play them both :)
For those who prefer it on original hardware instead of the HD ports, there's also Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance - plus all of the older DS KH games.
Personally, I would also throw in the Theatrhythm games (Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest) as a nice diversion with a boatload of music available to just enjoy.

Discovered Fire Emblem on the 3DS. Now have Awakening, Fates and Echoes. Honestly, it is worth owning a 3DS just for those games. Love it.

I always knew the 3DS was a great jRPG system, but I've not really indulged in these - even Xenoblade, I played it on Wii and eventually Switch. Awakening was my entry to Fire Emblem to be fair as well. The ones that seemed most interesting here are the SMT games and especially Radiant Historia - I've heard amazing things about it. [Edit: yeah, a shame the 3DS shop is going]

You should definitely give the Etrian Odyssey games a shot.
Starting with Etrian Odyssey IV: Legends of the Titan, then the remakes of the ds games.
Etrian Mystery Dungeon, Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate, and Code of Princess are also worth your time.
My teenage kid has put 100s of hours into Fantasy Life and still picks it up infrequently, however, I have not tried it.

Radiant Historia Perfect Chronology is my favorite 3DS game of all time! I like the art style of the game and I picked up this game on the whim as well. I was lucky to get the special edition with the other physical goodies. The soundtrack is also amazing. Oh yeah, I also enjoyed Stella Glow. Great JRPG. Maybe cheesy to others but I don't care, best 40 hours well spent.

My brother who doesn't play JRPG games watched me play both games and he got emotionally invested on the story too. You can tell the story of both games have emotional weight when someone who doesn't play JRPG game gets hooked on the story like it was an anime show.

Been playing my 3ds since launch (well that november, was waiting for the zelda 25th anniversary because I KNEW we'd get some special stuff, got the 25th anniversary glossy black with gold engraving console.) I've spent thousands of hours on jrpg's on my 3ds consoles.
Some of my all time favorite gaming memories have been made while playing the 3DS. It's just an incredible handheld.
I just started playing radiant historia & man it’s got me hooked! I really can’t wait to finish it so I can head back into DQ8 lol. I was feeling some type of way with how the 3ds only has solid rpg titles but so far I’m not disappointed.

Haven't tackled much of my 3ds library yet but you pretty much hit all of the ones I made sure to pick up already. I have heard stella glow is a solid title and honestly I adore bravely default's art style. That game definitely has some pacing issues but it's still a solid game that's exclusive to the 3ds to this day. Tales of the Abyss was also another port that was great on the 3DS.
I can't understate how surprising it was that they managed to cram xenoblade chronicles into the 3ds. It ran great and looked good enough considering the platform. Even though I owned it on the Wii at the time, the 3DS is where I played it to completion. The switch remake has a lot of quality of life improvements along with that expanded epilogue but I missed the original art style like some others have. In the end any xenoblade chronicles is good xenoblade chronicles though. Good list! I'm looking forward to my playthrough of Radiant Historia one day.
Yeah the fact they got Xenoblade on that cart is insane but I'd love to hear what you think of Radiant Historia once you get to it!
i gotta say, your top 1 choice is the best choice i've ever seen, because i love radiant historia, i played it on nintendo ds first, and when the port came out, i played it again... the game is just so good, except the character portrait, i like the old one better!

Very interesting list, I don't really ever think of the 3DS as a place for JRPGs (though after giving away my PS2 version of DQ8 I immediately bought it when seeing it for the 3Ds and I'll probably get DQ7 soon). I agree with others who have commented on Tales of the Abyss. If you don't have access to a PS2 and a PS2 version of the game, play it on the 3DS to atleast experience the story. Cool video sir.

Another great list of suggestions! I might not have played the majority of them but they're all titles from beloved franchises so I've heard about them! I bought a brand new sealed copy of Radiant Historia on the 3ds about 3 months ago... it wasn't cheap but my friends kept telling me that if I had to play only 1 game on that system, then it should be that one! I was super late to the 3DS as I'm not a huge fan of the 3D aspect of the system but I also bought a New 2DS XL at the same time so that should bother me less! Great video and keep up the good work!

My choice is a game called Conception II Children of the Seven Stars....the characters are pretty generic, the story is bad....even bordering on obscene 😬, the battle combat is uninspired and the artstyle is okay.

There's a main menu theme called 'Harvest Code' which will (very oddly, but soothingly) echo in your head for days🤣😅💖

Radiant historia is just an amazing game. Had it on the DS, if you are a rpg fan, not necessarily jrpg. You just want a good epic story you can't go wrong with that game

Anyway, your experience with Radiant Historia is similar to mine with Utawarerumono Mask of Deception (for the Vita back then, now also available on PS3, PS4 and Steam): I picked it up on a whim, but boy am I glad I did. I even got the genre wrong back then, I thought it was an SRPG, but it's more of a visual novel with a some SRPG battles for a change of pace. But damn, the characters and story are soooo damn good. The only other story that can compete with it for me, across all types of media, is Ascendance of Bookworm, the light novels in particular.
I would highly reccomend the Mario & Luigi games. All of them are very good and you really should not miss out on them
The amount of RPG'S Atlus released on the 3DS is crazy! And some of them are top quality too

I was playing the DS version of Radiant Historia and saw the 3DS digital version on sale for $8 and had to jump on it.

I still cannot put my 3ds down… it’s CHOCK FULL of my favorite JRPGs, rpgs, farming/life sims and puzzle games… all the best handheld game types. It’s much much much more portable to me than my switch. Even though I play handheld or use my Lite more often, I still prefer to take my 3DS out. And it’s so easy to keep on my nightstand and play some relaxing puzzles before bed or kill time with a fun jrpg. I’m gonna miss the 3ds era. I sold most of my collection in a tough time financially and I really regret it. I’m trying to get even some of it back, I have one 3ds xl modded with tons of games but I’m looking for a “new” model but they’re criminally expensive.
There should be differentiation between download only and those with physical copies. I’ve only got 1 month left to buy everything I need and I got to narrow it down.
Stella Glow was also a really good srpg game for thd 3ds

Etrian Odyssey 4 is a lovely game, great dungeon crawler very atmospheric with great music. I can also recommend SMT Soul hackers great port. SMT IV is a masterpiece. Radiant Historia perect chronology is amazing. SMT strange Journey awesome. Dragon Quest 8 is a must play masterpiece classic JRPG. Lot's of love for the 3ds is an amazing system for jrpg lovers. Also check out Tales of the Abyss awesome Tales game.

Great list. One thing I'd like to add, is if you already have Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright/Conquest, buy the Revelation DLC. It adds a whole new story route, that is not only (arguably) the best of the three, but it also recontextualizes the other two. The difficulty also strikes a great balance between not being too easy, but also not being too challenging

Yeah I made sure already ago I get all my favorite atlus 3ds games, in fact I pre-ordered strange journey redux in spring of '18 even though had my switch since year before was still playing my 3ds a good bit, I already has both devil survivor re-releases for 3ds and got radiant historia, think Alliance alive was my last 3ds release I picked up for 3ds. Awesome video

Happy to see another fan of the Project X Zone games! But yeah Strange Journey is so good, I need to get into the Etrian Odyssey games since they are similar but I’ve never gotten around to them sadly.

I've never been into jrpgs, never played them as a kid. However Fire emblem is one of my favorite series, I've played since the GBA. Radiant historia: Perfect Chronology and Shin Megami Tensi: Strange Journey redux look absolutely incredible. if they were an anime i'd be all over them so i think i have to grab them both before the eshop closes. Physical copies for both are the most expensive on the system nearly.
I'm so late to the Fire Emblem party but yeah it's incredible! I'd love to hear what you think of the other games you pick up and yeah I'd be there day 1 if Radiant Historia got an anime lol
